[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, After a quick trip outside I determined I do not need to carry more wood for the fireplace. Yes, it is July, but the temperature has been rather chilly. Without a fire it gets into the low fifties in the house. Thus I am burning wood in what should be the summer. There has been a steady rain for the last week in what should be our dry season. Very strange weather. I am used to burning a fire now and then in the summer to get rid of the chill but this is not normal. Twenty meters has not been very happy each of the last three mornings. I am curently listening to forty and find only a few folks on the band. I am not sure how well we will do tomorrow evening but I am going to try my best to check in as many of you as I can. Tom is off to Hawaii for a few weeks. I am not sure if he took a radio but he may check in from the beach :) If there is anyone willing to take his place in either the East or Midwest please give me a call. Otherwise I'll will work as far across the continent as I can under less than optimal conditions. Today I did some chores which took me out behind the pumphouse. As I was walking through the trees I was startled by three does looking at me like they owned the place. Maybe they do :) Later in the day I took a hike and found two does near the shed. They were gone by the time I got back. Just before dinner I stepped out on the porch only to have a single doe give me the eye from about ten feet away. I think they are up to something! Tomorrow: 1) Hail signs (first letter or two of the suffix of your call) 2) NCS help (as well as QSP/QNP help) Please join us: Sunday 2300z (Sunday 4 PM PDT) 14050 kHz Monday 0200z (Sunday 7 PM PDT) 7045 kHz 73, Kevin. Re: [Elecraft] K2 control board U3 'hot' question
Hi all, Just wanted to say thanks for the feedback on this, problem solved. Checking under some pins at U3 revealed a short. All is well now, and it's on to building the RF board, Part I. Thanks again, Will On Thu, 19 Jul 2007, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Just got myself a K2 (yay!) as it sure makes for a very nice rig and kit to build. I've just completed the control board, front panel and the minor assembly on the RF board. Upon power-up, there's NO smoke (yeah!) but... I did notice that the area of the control board where U3 is located seemed hot. At first I thought this was attributed to the regulators directly below it. Instead, I'm now feeling (and I mean feeling!) that U3 is pretty hot. I managed to just run the DISPLAY test to fetch the voltage and saw it show "E 17.8 i .68" Now, I did test the power supply, and it's happily putting out 13.8V all the way through the RF board. But it looks like a simmering U3 and the display are pointing to something wrong with the voltage and current sensing circuitry. Am I on the right track? ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] New K2 build...Missing R116, also
I sent Steve this answer off list...but it also answers Clark's missing R116 question...so I'm posting it to the full list. dk Steve...I ran into this same issue with mine a couple of weeks ago and when I checked with Scott at Elecraft parts, he said the small green/brown/green was R116 which goes across toroid L33 in the BFO section (pg58). I counted all my RF chokes and compared them to the parts list and found the parts count showed a regular sized brown/black/brown so I used that. I think they need to learn the difference between a miniature and sub-miniature! Also, I couldn't get up to 6V on page 61, the VCO alignment stage...I would max out at 3.8 volts...and I had the windings correct on T-5, the correct part at C72 and the correct value at L30...and when I asked and even sent a photo of the toriod, Gary said I should try to squeezing the windings closer together (rather than leaving them uniformly spread out to ensure 85% coverage of the toriod as they stress over and over)...I moved them (pinched) closer and it immediately solved the problemthat little tip would be nice to have show up somewhere in the book, also! David King KE7EKA Quoting [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Hello, I was wondering if anyone else has built a K2 lately. I am in build phase II and I am to install an RF Choke on the back of the board, it's item ID is RFC15. The manual says to expect a sub miniature with Brown-Black-Brown. RE: [Elecraft] dangerous software
Absolutely! I have used AVG Anti-Virus by Grisoft for over four years on several machines without a single issue. In my experience it is far more stable and reliable than either of the two highly-advertised brands that often come pre-loaded on new machines, and it has a much, much smaller memory 'footprint'. My version is the paid one since I use my computers in my business. IIRC it's costing me about a buck a month on each machine. Downloads take only a few seconds. The paid version (at least) updates automatically. IIRC the free version simply requires a click on a radio button. They offer 24X7 support for the paid version as well, but I can't say how well it works because I've never needed it. I deal with hundreds of e-mails each day. AVG just keeps working and working. The only evidence it's there is when it grabs an infected file and quarantines it. I lean on Windows Firewall and deal with SPAM by identifying the dozens (hundreds?) of people - friends and clients alike - who I expect to hear from and have Outlook shunt their mail into specific folders. That leaves almost nothing but SPAM in the in-box. I can quickly scan it for anything I want to save and then dump the lot in one move. I prefer doing that after having a SPAM filter accidentally grab and trash a few important e-mails from clients. Re: [Elecraft] Need help with K2 #6196
Larry, RFC15 will not cure the problem, but it is not likely missing. Direct him to the errata page and he should see that the choke is now one with a large body - he should install it. If RFC15 is truly missing, he can temporarily replace it with a short bit of wire. On the VCO problem, it should oscillate at some frequency. First have him check the counter probe by checking for the proper reading (near 12080 kHz) at TP3 and near 4915 kHz at TP2. If he finds a reading on those two points, the probe is working. Back to the VCO problem - the most usual cause of failure to oscillate is T5 - the leads should be well tinned (a bit of tinned lead should be visible on top of the board), the turns must be correct. He should obtain some kind of frequency reading at TP1 before being concerned about the R30 voltage - yes, it will be at 8 volts if the VCO is not oscillating. 73, Don W3FPR Larry wrote: Hello All, I'm helping someone who is building K2 #6196, we are talking over the phone so I haven't been able to actually see or touch the kit. [Elecraft] Re:K2:Where Is R116?
Thanks to all of you who responded, I rechecked the chokes installed to date and found the little critter (the Good News) had been installed in the wrong place: namely, RFC15 which calls out a tiny brown body choke. I only had one such critter and didn't verify the color bands. The Bad News is the leads are too short to use. I obviously don't have the tiny RFC15 either. Parts order to Elecraft done this afternoon. Perhaps I'll be able to do the smoke test next weekend. Re: [Elecraft] K2: Where is R116?
Clark, R116 is normally in the bag with the BFO inductor. It sometimes gets stuck in the bag, look carefully. If you have to use a replacement, be certain it has a resistance of at least 2 megohms (it is really used electrically as an insulator), and it must be the 1/8 watt size because a larger one will not fit down inside the toroid. The purpose of R116 is to physically secure the inductor and provide convenient leads that the very fine wire can be easily soldered to. It serves no electrical purpose in the circuit at all (it is not even shown on the schematic). 73, Don W3FPR Clark Macaulay wrote: I'm at the last part of Part II and was really looking forward to the "smoke test" today but cannot find R116 for use with the BFO coil. When I did my parts inventory, I didn't check the resistor tape thinking that since it was produced by a machine, SURELY it didn't need verifying. Is R116 packed separately in one of the RF parts bag? If so, I don't have it (at least now I don't have it). I've checked the boards thinking I might have put it in place of another component but haven't found it. At 1/8w tht would mean a size similar to the diodes. How critical is the value if I want to find a local supplier? ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Hey Guys, Thanks everyone for your help, you guys are quick. I found out that I didn't get an errata sheet with my K2 and Elecraft has replaced the sub miniature Chokes with larger ones. I guess some people were having problems with how fragile the minis were. So, I was actually looking at R116, the only sub mini left, it wasn't a choke at all. Re: [Elecraft] New K2 build...
Steve, Look more closely at the bands - I would bet it has a green body and you are confusing the color code bands with the body color. A green - black - green RF choke would have a value of 5,,000 uH, and I don't believe that large an inductance would be practical in a choke of the size you have in hand. 73, Don W3FPR [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hello, I was wondering if anyone else has built a K2 lately. RE: [Elecraft] dangerous software
If it's really happening in response to your sending each e-mail (try sending a message to yourself and see if it happens) it sounds like your computer already has a virus. If the misspelling (pc-calling instead of pc-cillin) is really how it appears in the message, the message itself is part of the problem too. As Fred said, don't open the attachments. IF the misspelling is yours and you're running Trend on the system, contact them. It sounds as if Trend on your system is catching an attempt by a virus on your system to pass the infected file onto others. If you are not running Trend on your system, contact whoever you got your anti-virus program from. It's slightly possible you're being bombarded by some server dumping those e-mails on you from outside your system, but if you send yourself a test message twice in quick order, it's very unlikely an external system would slip in the phishing message between them. If you continue to get the message in response to every "send" command, it's a good sign it's your system that is generating the messages and that you do have a virus. When I first received my K3, I tuned thru the bands specifically looking for birdies which I felt might cause reception problems... e.g. birdies which I COULD find with NO ANTENNA connected and which were still present when an antenna for that band was connected, and still strong enough to be a potential problem. For 10M, I found two spurs: 29.085.55 MHz Moderate 29.661.70 MHz Strong I reported them to Wayne and the other Field testers. Wayne immediately responded, suggesting that I double-check the physical (mechanical) grounding of the shield immediately behind the front panel "sandwich" of PC boards to its attachment point on the top-left side of the radio frame. Sure enough, the screw at that point had not been securely tightened by the assemblers. I snugged down the screw at that point and re-checked for birdies on 10M... GONE! The only birdies I could then hear (no antenna connected) were completely covered when my 10M yagi was attached (note: the band was DEAD, and there was no QRM nor QRN present). NOW... the ONLY birdie which I've found, and which I would classify as even a possible problem appears around 1.855MHz, and it's not all that bad. I think you'll be happy. 73, Tom N0SS ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] 6m FAQ
If you are starting out on 6m, then I would recommend you look at this FAQ. http://www.qsl.net/w4sat/sixmeter.htm The UKSMG is another good source of information. http://www.uksmg.org I use a K2 and XV50 on 6m - an excellent combination. But looking forward to getting my K3 and trying this on 6m. 73 Peter G3ZSS Editor, UKSMG Six News ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 question to field testers - 10M birdies??
All, Can one of the testers please comment My main interest in the K3 is for transverter driving from 10m Can someone provide info on what birdies if any they find around the 10m band receiver My K2 was less than acceptable in this hence the reason it got sold Is the K3 10m section free ?? Anyone comment? 73 Simon DL4PLM Simon Lewis GM4PLM/DL4PLM http://www.dl4plm.net -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Don Rasmussen Sent: Samstag, 21. Juli 2007 00:14 To: Elecraft Subject: [Elecraft] K3 Preliminary Specifications So you don't want ANY phone calls or e-mails about specs bacause you're busy with the rollout? Just say so if that's it! ;-) [Elecraft] K3 Preliminary Specifications On our K3 page, you'll now find a link to a .pdf version of the K3's preliminary specs. We'll add an HTML version, too, probably next week. Any of these specs may change pending further testing or design changes. PLEASE don't call or e-mail with questions about the specs. We'll add or update specs as time permits. Discussion about the specs is fine, of course and we'll be diligently reading the reflector. But I'd like to ask in advance that any *arguments* about specs be taken off-line, so Eric (our reflector cop) doesn't have to put the hammer down :) Comment about RX specs: Receive dynamic range (IMDDR3) is shown for 5 to 20 kHz offsets at present, with the 400-Hz INRAD filter. We're trying to be conservative, because testing organizations may get slightly different results due to variations in equipment and procedures. Our own tests, conducted at three separate locations, consistently show 102 to 105 dB at 5 kHz. We also didn't list 2 kHz offset performance yet, because we're carefully characterizing all filters. Typically, we're seeing low to mid 90's on all filters. (Measuring the K3's dynamic range has been a challenge because it's higher than anything we've dealt with before. We've had to beef up our test gear to handle it.) Again, please, NO phone calls or e-mails about specs -- this will just slow down the engineering and support staff. We're dealing with many details right about now, as you can imagine. 6 meters is not allowed in Thailand. In fact a 6m transmitter is illegal here.
