[Elecraft] Win4 KX3

2013-09-13 Thread Tom Blahovici
Hi,

Due to numerous requests for a Win4K3Suite for the Elecraft KX3 and some
independent testing that looks very encouraging, I have decided to provide
Win4K3 for the KX3.
All of the features of Win4K3Suite will be there with the exception of no P3
interface. It will support the KPA500 if you wish, as well as the KAT500. of
course it will support full remote operation as well.

I will need to purchase a KX3. So I have a few questions for the group.
Are there any options that would need to be available which if not, could
influence development work? I plan on just the basic radio. I have no need for
the tuner since Win4K3Suite already supports it and the code is transportable.
Same thing for the filters etc. Is there anything I am missing?

I will probably sell the KX3 after the release.

Thanks for your input.

Tom

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 CW Key Options

2013-09-13 Thread Jimk8mr
There are many very functional radios out there that use a mono key jack.
In my case, the IC-746.

Most keyers have their output as a mono RCA jack. The K1EL USB WinKey and
the W9XT Unified Microsystems XT-4 are two such examples. A readily
available mono RCA to 1/8" cable is exactly what is needed for such, with no
extra
unused dangling ends of a stereo cable. And a mono plug is easier to wire
up - more room without the second circuit to deal with.

The suggested firmware change would be pretty simple to implement. We
aren't talking a major DSP redo.

I suspect many other firmware changes have been made to satisfy even fewer
people.

IMHO, modifying software to satisfy the wants of a few
of us isn't warranted. In your case, "doing it right" is just
a simple plug change and the key would still work in "older"
radios.

mono 1/4" key plug. Even with an adaptor to 1/8", it wouldn't work because
the shell on the mono plug keyed the ring on the KX3 KEY2 input.

While at it, allowing independent selection of "TIP=DOT" on CQ KEY1 and

Jim,

Yes, the lowest transverter IF is 7-MHz. Of course you can operate
the K3 in low power transceive on any frequency from 490-KHz to
32-MHz if in the TEST mode. Only issue is VFO readout is the IF and
not the operating frequency of a converter or transverter.

But say you use 3.472-3.478 MHz as your IF? Your LO would be 3.000
MHz. This could even be a DDS oscillator locked to a 10-MHz
reference. A simple mixer and LO without filters would work 0-500 KHz
(maybe).

The wider issue if using other ham transceivers that only operate in
the ham bands.

My K3 has the EXREF board for referencing to an external 10-MHz
source. This enables 0.1 ppm accuracy. A 10-MHz LO is 1-Hz stabile.

14.3035 is a less than great choice of frequency. The maritime nets on
14.300 [there's more than one] firmly believe they own the frequency and
are there daily. They're billed as "maritime emergency nets," although
99% of the checkins are definitely not afloat, and all that I've heard
in several years that are afloat are tied up to a dock somewhere [I
suppose it's possible to sink at a dock]. I sometimes leave 14300 on
when I'm working in the shack.

There was traffic up at 14.305 something.. so I know the antenna was
working.. just not catching Atanta...(I was probably where he was

I haven't ever checked into the SSB net, maybe I will try this Sunday.
I do get into Kevin's CW net on 40 on occasion, but with the untimely
departure of N0SS [SK], Kevin is just too close for 20 and by the 40m
netI'm usually at dinner.

It is common on many nets to call for QRP, Mobiles, etc. I've sort of
equated it to the 2 Silent Periods each hour when maritime comm was CW
[well ... MCW]. I'll see what happens Sun.

[Elecraft] KBPF3 and KPA500

2013-09-13 Thread Jim Leder (Hotmail)
 I installed a KBPF3 option, and it works OK, mostly. I also have a PR6, so I
am trying to use the BYPASS connector of the PR6. I have pulled the jumper in
the PR6, so the BYPASS would would work. And it does, as long as my KPA500
cable is disconnected. When I connect the KPA500 control cable, it seems power
is ALWAYS applied to the PR6, rendering the BYPASS not connected. DIGIOUT1 is
off on all bands, except 6. When I disconnect the KPA500 control cable, all
works as it should (except the KPA500). What am I missing?

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results, September 8

2013-09-13 Thread Lewis Phelps
Two Sundays ago, net control DID create a "quiet time" and asked for QRP
stations only to call.

I have great difficulty checking into the net from my location in Pasadena, CA,
partly because I have a very tall mountain range just out the window, and
between me and Oregon, and partly because my K3-10 is drowned out by stations
with amplifiers.

On this occasion, I was able to check in very easily. So, I concur with those
who have suggested a "low power' segment of the net. Even better, two such
periods would be desirable, the first about five minutes after the net opens,
and about 15 minutes later, to give a second chance for anyone who could't make
it the first time. (Band conditions DO change.)

More active relaying by net participants would also help. On some nets,
stations seem to relay only if asked. On others, they step in to relay if it's
clear that a particular station isn't getting through to NC. It would be nice
if the Elecraft net adopted the latter approach.

One more thingif NC has a beam antenna, he might announce " beaming east,
calls from northeast and northern midwest stations only," etc.

And let's all give three cheers for Phil for the great job he does as NC!

Dave we need to listen better. Also better band conditions would help. I also

Seriously we need to relay those we hear that are not being heard by net

2013-09-13 Thread Esquer Dave
Might I suggest (like I think was done in the past) that a few minutes (defined
clearly) are set aside for us QRP KX3 folks to check in?

I am temporarily located in Waikoloa, HI (BK29CW). I can hear the relay from
N6JW in Riverside, CA. and sometimes can directly hear NS7P from Elmira,
Oregon. When net control transfers to Georgia, no way I can do anything from
here.

I am in a condo complex with antenna police chasing me … putting up a tower …
ain't going to happen. My attic is accessible, but the roof above it is
concrete tile. My simple EARC endfed 6-40 half wave dipole
(http://www.earchi.org/92011endfedfiles/Endfed6_40.pdf) running inverted v in a
palm tree tied to my lanai is my present setup.

Respectfully and hopefully, it would be a "challenge" for those running much
more power than I to pull out the "small fry" from the noise during the Sunday
net.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results, September 8

2013-09-13 Thread Edward R Cole

N7SP etal:

If I may make a suggestion that might make KX3 checkin easier. On
other nets that I often check into, the first stations invited to
checkin are portable, mobile, and low power stations. That gives
those stations a better chance of avoiding being covered up by
stronger stations. Not sure if this could be incorporated to the
Elecraft-SSB net protocol?

I have checked in with my KX3 sn475 several times and usually I wait
till the near the end of the net when the "dust settles" a bit. I do
have the advantage of a yagi at 50-feet. I also checked in with my
K3/10 sn4340 barefoot many times before I had an amplifier (I have
both 120w and 250w amps).

I will try checking in this Sunday with 250w. Past couple weeks prop
has not been nice.

How can we as a group increase the results of the Sunday SSB net for
those of us who have KX3s running barefoot? Only 2 of the 34 checkins
on Sunday were KX3s.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 CW Key Options

2013-09-13 Thread bill conkling
Get a 1/8 stereo name to 2 X 1/8 mono ( L/R) adapter and you're in business.
You can plug your key/bug into one jack and the computer in the other.

Much simpler than doing it in the radio, which would only provide one of the
options.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results, September 8

2013-09-13 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Only a "short" while ago (the early 1950's) few Hams had mobile rigs.
Virtually everyone on the air was working from a fixed station.

One of the games mobile operators played was to drive over to another Ham's
QTH and shock him with a call from the curb in front of the house,
completely swamping their receiver with a gadzillion dB over S-9 signal.

Of course it only worked once, but was good for a laugh followed by a cup of
coffee or an '807' or two.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 CW Key Options

2013-09-13 Thread Ken G Kopp
Hi Jim !

It's generally accepted convention today that virtually
all key plugs/jacks are "three-circuit" ... tip, ring and
sleeve ... in both "1/8" and "1/4" diameters.

IMHO, modifying software to satisfy the wants of a few
of us isn't warranted. In your case, "doing it right" is just
a simple plug change and the key would still work in "older"
radios.

Re: [Elecraft] Limited mail

2013-09-13 Thread Peter Eijlander (PA0PJE)

John,

What you ask is not possible on the reflector. It is either all or
nothing. Participants are asked to always put the type of Elecraft
equipment, the mail is about, in the subject line but unfortunately
frequently this is ignored.

I use an off-line reader (Thunderbird in my case) and have filters set
up to move mails that have a type in the message's subject to move to a
specific folder. Those mails that are of no interest to me are simple to
delete. I do not use on line services like Nabble.

If you want to stop receiving mails form the reflector you need to go to
the home page listed under all mails to unsubscribe, as in most, if not
all reflectors.
