[Elecraft] K3 Setting Up digital modes on K3 KS3
Have decided to play with PSK and FT4 or FT8 (if I can figure what they are) However, I am having trouble setting up all of the various Menu and Config settings to accept the CAT input and the CW or PTT from either HRD or Mix W. I have got the rig to turn on when I start a transmission on MizW, BUT all I hear is a whistle, single tone) on the monitor. Can someone give me som starting settings to get this working. A few years ago it worked on PSK, however I must have made some incorrect settings when I got a Heil Headset with mike. Original K3, then added the sub receiver so it is sort of a KS3 -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

What is the status of any firmware change to allow digital mode per VFO on the K3? Not likely due to the synthesizer design. Meantime are there any workarounds? Re: [Elecraft] K3 SO2V in digital modes
The simplest workaround is to use AFSK. If you are capable of configuring your equipment so as to generate a clean PSK63 signal, it is within your ability to use AFSK to create a clean RTTY signal that is every bit as good as (or better than) an FSK RTTY signal. 73, Rich VE3KI G3WGN wrote: It seems the current firmware will not allow me to use FSK on VFO A and PSK63 on VFO \ B. eric norris wrote: Is there a way to get more than 4 KHz rx bandwidth in USB or digital mode on my K3/ XV-144? I have the 6KHz, 2.8KHz, and 400z filters installed. No. I have the 13KHz FM filter but the receive bandwidth is still limited to 4KHz. I can appreciate that for use with PSK Browser software that decodes everything in the entire passband a wide bandwidth could be useful - just for monitoring. However, if you can receive digital signals within a wide spectrum and can see them on the waterfall then the implication is that you can click on the trace and reply to them. On transmit, the audio still goes through the regular SSB filter. Therefore it is better to limit the bandwidth to 2.8KHz and limit the waterfall to about 400Hz - 2.4KHz within which the K3 properly set up in DATA A will give the full selected output. Then you won't be tempted to reply to stations that are actually outside the transmit passband. - Julian, G4ILO. On a slightly different note, if you have problems with different levels with different audio cards for different programs, take a look at this program: http://www.romacsoftware.com/SoundManagement.htm Very clever. It detects what program you are using and what audio card is requested and resets audio levels to where you want them. I can't tell you how many times my sound cards have been hijacked by some other program, and I have to go back and reset the Windows level set. If the program works for you, he only is asking a $ 10 donation. tom K8TB ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 and the digital modes
Thanks, For the many who responded to my question on hook-up for the K3 using the digital modes, THANKS. It works with MixW using the two cables from the in/out of the K3 to the mic/speaker on the computer along with a serial cable for rig control. Once I figured out that 'line in' had a gain control automatically selected when 'main/mic sel' was in the 'line in' position! It's where we normally adjust the mic gain control. Neat. I placed this in PF-1 memory which makes it easily to select when moving back and forth from digital to CW/SSB. And using the K3 at about 2.5 watts into a THP SS amp at 10/12 watts on the digital modes, everything runs very cool. It's a learning process but with good help here on the reflector, it was possible and again thanks for the thoughtful help. Side bar: The dual PB feature for CW is great and thanks to Ralph, K1ZZI/4 for calling that to my attention. I still can't believe all the goodies this rig has. See http://audiosystemsgroup.com/HamInterfacing.pdf and http://audiosystemsgroup.com/RFI-Ham.pdf for detailed advice that is very inexpensive. All you need to buy are a few connectors and/or cables. If you have extra money laying around, you can buy a dedicated ham interface box. 73, Jim Brown K9YC ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 and the digital modes
Pardon for a dumb question, but I've hit that wall... again! I talked to Dale at Elecraft and he suggested some of you may know the answer as he had no experience with hooking up and making K3 work with a computer so it will work using the sound card to have a full array of modes, etc. Guess I misunderstood how the K3 did this and purchased the serial to USB cable at the time the K3 was ordered and it does the trick relative to downloading the firmware and very well. I expected this same cable to give me all the audio in and out plus key the rig. It doesn't at this QTH and Dale suggested I use a serial to serial cable which I tried and it doesn't work either. So that is where I'm at tonight.. dead in the water, hi. Has anyone done this and if so PLEASE share it with me? If I'm missing something I should know please tell me too -- I can handle it, but I've got the book memorized! I use MixW and FLdigi on other rigs and they work fine, but the K3 is where I'd like to do the digital modes. It passes frequency commands and so forth if you use it with a program like Ham Radio Deluxe. You also need two standard 3.5mm stereo patch cables to go between your computer's sound card LINE IN and LINE OUT and the K3's connectors. LINE OUT of the computer to LINE IN on the K3, and LINE IN to the computer from LINE OUT from the K3. Using two audio cables like this, a serial cable, and Ham Radio Deluxe I can operate the digital modes, including transmit and receive, from my computer. 73, Lyle KK7P PS - I would expect FLdigi and MixW to work as well, but have not tried them so cannot speak from experience. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3 and the digital modes
Lynn, Connect the computer *soundcard* input to the K3 rear panel Line Out, and the computer Line out to the K3 Line IN jack. Use two stereo cables with a 3.5mm stereo plug on each end (the plugs must be stereo even if the signal is in only one channel - typically the left channel). You can use VOX with no other connection to the computer, but if you do have a serial cable batween the K3 and computer only, you can use the PTT signal generated by the computer on the RS-232 interface. Set the K3 menu for PTT on either DTR or RTS depending on which one your digital application uses. Set the K3 data mode to DATA A and you should be in business for soundcard generated data modes. The K3 can do other forms of data mode operation, some through the serial cable, but the copmuter applications you mentioned only produce soundcard based data modes (DATA A in K3 terms). See the manual pages 31 and 32 for additional information. 73, Don W3FPR Lynn Lamb, W4NL wrote: Pardon for a dumb question, but I've hit that wall... again!
