Re: [Elecraft] Alpha Antenna/KX3.

2019-06-04 Thread Ian Kahn, NV4C

Gene,

I've had a lot of fun on vacations with my KX2 and a BuddiStick by
BuddiPole:

http://www.buddipole.com/

The price, for the Deluxe kit, is probably comparable to what you'd pay
for an AlexLoop. I just clamp mine to the arm of the chair, the table,
whatever, with the included clamp, string out the included radial, and
have fun. It tunes great with the combination of tapped loading coil and
the built-in tuner on my KX2. I also have the tripod BuddiPole sells,
but don't like it as much as the clamp. It's a very small tripod, and
the way the antenna and mount plate are designed, it is very easy to get
heavy to one side and tip the antenna over.

Hope this helps.

Re: [Elecraft] Some K4 updates from the engineering department

2020-04-20 Thread Ian Kahn, NV4C

Wayne,

Thank you for this update. I am eagerly awaiting information on the K4
kits and when they will be available (I know, not for a while yet ;-)).

My only regret with my K3, s/n 261, is that I bought it, and its
accompanying P3, used. Consequently, I didn't get the joy of building
them myself. I built my KPA500 and KAT500. Aside from dropping the tiny
fasteners into the deep pile carpet in the dining room, I loved every
minute of it. I've thoroughly enjoyed my K-Line, and look forward to
upgrading to the K4 (and maybe the KPA1500, if the funds hold out).

Greetings from locked-down California I hope everyone, near and far, is

I thought I'd take a break from playing with the K4 and tweaking firmware to
give everyone a status report from the engineering side. (Eric has been keeping
everyone informed about how Elecraft has been affected by the pandemic more
generally.)

These musings are in no particular order. I hope they help satisfy those who
recently posted with questions, info-cravings, etc.

* * *

Reference Oscillator

The K4 includes a stable internal TXCO, standard, as well as the ability to
lock to an external 10 MHz reference. We just completed a round of testing on
this feature.

The internal TCXO is accurate to within +/- .28 ppm with no calibration and no
external reference connected. There's a menu entry for dialing this in as tight
as +/- .02 PPM (+/- 1 Hz at 50 MHz). Connecting an external reference will hold
it even closer, and of course keep it there over an even wider temperature
range.

Panadapter Controls

Thanks to the efforts of our [working-at-home] software team, the panadapter
controls just keep getting better. When you tap DISPLAY, you're presented with
14 easy to use display functions. But we took things a step further by allowing
you to specify whether to adjust the current parameter on LCD, EXT, or both
(when an external monitor is attached), and on main, sub, or both (when in
dual-display mode). You can independently specify single or dual-pan for LCD
and external monitor. For example, you could have dual-Pan on a large HDMI
monitor, while setting the LCD to monitor just main or sub RX.

Stereo Audio

Receive audio provides independent left and right channels for both headphones and
external speakers. When used in single-receive mode, this allows you to use simulated
stereo or "pitch mapping"-- both very effective at relieving listening fatigue.
I've been using this a lot in DXing and QRP work. Full stereo also comes into play in
diversity mode, when listening to pileups, or just monitoring two separate bands. Even
with a basic K4, the two receivers can be set to any two bands, and you can operate
cross-band split. The K4D adds a second set of band-pass filters and a second A-to-D
converter to greatly improve out-of-band rejection when monitoring different bands.

Receive Antenna Controls

We recently made some improvements in this area. In addition to main RX ant and sub RX ant
selection switches, there are now separate icons showing which antennas are in use: one for main
RX, one for sub RX, and one for TX antenna. Main and sub receivers default to the TX antenna, but
you can select any of the antenna jacks for assignment to each receiver independently. This updates
the icons accordingly. You can also assign names to antenna ports using a pop-up alphanumeric
keyboard. On my K4, I have names for the three antennas connected to my KAT4 ATU, as well as
"SIG GEN" for the RX ANT IN 1 jack and "LOOP" for RX ANT IN 2.

RF Gain Controls

The ATTN switch brings up a selection tool that allows you to turn the
attenuator on/off and select attenuation from 0 to 21 dB in 3-dB steps. (As
with all receive and transmit controls, these settings are stored per-band and
per-receiver.) You can also dial in per-receiver RF GAIN (0 to -60 dB, with
digital readout) and preamp setting (off/pre1/pre2). All gain settings are now
taken into account when calculating S-meter and panadapter reference levels.

Miscellaneous Controls

Compared the the K3S, the K4 has numerous additional controls, resulting in a lot
less use of the menu. Each receiver has a collection of per-mode settings (tap MAIN
RX or SUB RX, respectively), as does the transmitter (tap the TX button). There are
dedicated switches for TUNE LP (user-specified low-power TUNE setting), REM ANT (for
future control of remote antenna switches, rotators, etc.), VFO B>A (in addition
to the usual A>B), AUTO spot (in addition to SPOT), PF1-PF4 (plus another 14 user
functions, Fn 1-14, via a touch function), and a separate audio BALance knob
function, the behavior of which could be adapted to various operator needs in the
future.

Touch Controls

We're sure you'll find, as we have, that the K4's touch screen interface is
fast and convenient to use. To capitalize on this, we've been adding new touch
features. To

Re: [Elecraft] Availability

2020-05-16 Thread Ian Kahn, NV4C

Tommy,

Please understand something about the K4 and availability - this is a
rig that was announced this time last year (at Dayton Hamvention), that
was still under design and development. At that time, I believe they
anticipated the ship date to be in time for the 2019 holidays. Then, the
testers found some things that needed correcting, which pushed the ship
date out a couple of months. Then, COVID-19 hit, we all went into
shelter-in-place, Elecraft had issues getting parts, and the work slowed
down. And Eric and Wayne have been up front about explaining all this to
us. But, the key here is that this transceiver is ground-breaking new
technology. It is a brand-new product still under development, a process
that was delayed largely due to world events beyond anyone's control.

There were similar delays (save for the global pandemic :-) ) and
similar complaints when the KX3 was released several years ago. A new
product will not always meet the time lines the developers initially
anticipate and announce. But, Eric and Wayne have said repeatedly in
this forum, and in the newsletter, that they have product in their other
lines available to ship. If you are concerned about your order, please
email sa...@elecraft.com. The wonderful sales team will tell you what's
in stock and what isn't. While I haven't ordered anything during the
current pandemic, I have never had a problem with product I ordered
being out of stock or back-ordered.

But, the long and the short here is that I wouldn't be concerned about
product availability. Pay attention to the K4 conversation, but take it
with a grain of salt, especially in these unique times.

As someone else posted here earlier, I'm waiting for the K4 kit to come
out before I order mine (probably a K4-HD). I also know it will probably
be at least another year before the kit versions become available. But,
I can wait. In the meantime, I finally have some time to really get to
know the KX2 I've had for nearly 18 months, and I will continue enjoying
my K3-based K-Line (K3, P3, KAT500, KPA500).

Good Morning

I’ve been studying how to establish a ham station and asking around what is
available to do that with these days. A month or so of research brought me to
Elecraft - best bang for the buck receivers. This narrowed my search down to
just a couple radios. Now thank you to this forum's members I’ve decided what
Elecraft has listed for sale I would like to use in a newly established ham
station.

I sent a wish list to Elecraft to see what is actually in stock knowing the
present pandemic could cause shortages of supplies and labor because of the
social distancing requirements.

Now I read on this forum many questions about when customers will actually
receive the radios they plunked down $4K to buy when first announced some time
ago. One customer mentioned that he was in an older age bracket and wondered
if he’d get his in time to use it - I’m five years older than what he said was
his age.

I’m wondering if I should consider another company’s products - find a company
if any that might have equipment in stock.

To end on a good note I need to say there has been plenty of time to leisurely
accumulate parts and design and erect a by the book optimum height inverted V
antenna out in my several acre front yard. All needed now is to hook a radio
onto the lead running down the pole and to under a small tree that will shade
me and a radio relaxed in a lawn chair.

Guess where I will not develop as much anxiety as others over delayed shipment
of equipment is because I did not send money with my wish list - or maybe I
should to actually get my name on the list to get my choice of equipment?

Any thoughts ?

Thank you Tommy Judson

Re: [Elecraft] Seeking comments on Ham Expo from participants

2020-08-23 Thread Ian Kahn, NV4C
While I enjoyed the Virtual Ham Expo, there were some aspects I thought
could be improved. I sent this feedback to Eric Guth via the feedback
survey I received not long after the Expo closed.

 * Like everyone else who has responded so far, I enjoyed Eric's demo
of the K4. I am eagerly awaiting the availability of the K4 kits so
I can order and build mine. I'm even getting my work area prepared
already, for something I know is still probably 6-8 months out.
 * I really liked Wayne's presentation on the architecture of the KX3.
It was really neat to have the chief designer of the product show
us, component-by-component, how it was designed.
 * The gamification of the door prizes needs to go away. As has been
said here before, and I'm sure to Eric G., ad nauseum - it penalizes
those who actually want to enjoy the presentations and those who
can't spend all 48 hours of the Expo going to the vendors' booths
and the on-line lounge. And, it only encourages bad behavior, as the
   Expo organizers quickly discovered.
 * Users should be able to enter the presentations a few minutes early.
By only allowing us to enter at the exact moment the forum started,
it was possible to miss part of the presentation due to latency or
   other technical issues.
 * Since all the initial presentations were prerecorded, they should be
available for viewing any time after the initial presentation is
given. Nobody is good enough to be in multiple places at once, even
virtually. And, some very good presentations overlapped with each other.
 * Check the videos for quality well before the Expo begins. I attended
the Carole Perry Youth Forum, because two of the presenters belong
to my radio club. Carole's intro was well worth the time, but she
was so animated in her speaking style that her web cam kept trying
to refocus. I was getting motion sick from it.
 * The vendor area should be more than just links to the vendors' web
sites. If that's all you're giving me, aside from the chat, why
should I bother using the vendor area? I can just go to the web
   sites myself.
 * The vendor area needs to be easier to navigate. The button to exit
each booth to the "hallway" outside the booth was not prominent
enough. I didn't even know it was there until the end of the day
Saturday. I kept ending up back at the "front door" to the vendor arena.

All this being said, I think it was a good first run for a new concept
in hamfests. The presentations I did attend were informative, even if
some of the videos weren't of the highest quality. This may be a good
option to add to traditional hamfests, when the pandemic clears and we
can go back to doing things in person. I don't see this as a replacement
for traditional hamfests, but it would be nice if I could see one or two
forums from Dayton, say, even if I don't have the money or time to go to
Ohio for the fun and games myself.

It was, shall we say, unique...I'd love to hear about your experiences, good,

[Elecraft] K4 Books

2020-06-29 Thread Ian Kahn, NV4C

All,

I have a question that is probably best answered by Eric, Wayne, or one
of the K4 testers. Since Fred Cady, KE7X (sk), is no longer with us to
write a K4 book, are the UI and firmware close enough to that of the
K3/K3S that we can use those books to learn it? Or, is Elecraft working
with another author (hopefully of Fred's skill and stature, but that
would be very hard to find) to write a supplemental K4 book? Or, are we
all just out of look in that department?

While the impact for end-users isn't as life-or-death, it is still
unreasonable to think that every time our systems get patched/updated,
we have to reconfigure them. This is amplified by the fact that
Microsoft no longer gives the home user any advance notice of when their
system will be patched, nor way to disable automated patching.

Since Microsoft does not know of every piece of software, on every

an update.    I view that this is no fault of Windows, it is just the
way they handle updates.    Unless one is very familiar with the
in-depth operation of Windows,  it is wise for anyone to make notes of
values, locations and they way one access certain application settings.

Hi Buck

What did I do to fix it?

Well I left the K3S disconnected for an hour or so while I read the

"trouble
shooting" sections in the owners manuals. I decided to change the
power

supply & use a different PC & a different USB cable.

To my surprise the K3S then started normally & with the new PC I was

able to

download a new copy of the Utility program & the latest firmware. This
connected immediately to the K3S.

So, what was wrong & why did it not work before?

I have absolutely no idea!

Mike,

If you contact Elecraft support (supp...@elecraft.com), they should be
able to provide you a manufacture date for your rig.
