Re: Doing test restore with transaction logs...
We HAD to do this. Our C:/drive failed and we had to reinstall Win2000 and rebuild everything from backup (discovering that our backup program didn't really backup all needed Exchange files). Thank God our logs were stored on the D:/ drive and MS helped us reinstall Exchange2000 to our specs and copy the logs back overtook about 5 hours and all for less than 300 bucks...what a deal! RE: Moving mailboxes to another server
WE have set backups up on the laptops. But you know when you leave it up to the user they don't have the time to wait. So what we have done is asked them to copy their .pst file to a zip disk or when they are in the office to copy it to a share on the server. This works great because OWA loads fast if you keep the information store small. Take it from me your helpdesk calls will increase with laptop users calling saying that they can't load OWA. Keep their exchange box small let they pst grow. If they come in the office every now then you can set the outlook desktop client up to sync so even if they are on the road they can access their old mail. This is just a nut shell of what I have done with exchange remote users. I also included the Norton mobile client so there anti virus will be updated through e-mail. It go's on on. Instead of moving the users pst file to the exchange server, I imported them back into outlook let the pst file remain local on the pc. This solved several issues. 1) It kept the information store(users mailbox) small which in turn helps load outlook web faster. (If you import the users .pst file they are large .pst files it will take forever for the web client to load when they are on the road) 2) It gave our users a chance to keep all their old mail move the mail they wanted needed to view on the web to folders in the information store still have the web load fast. -Original Message- From: Chris Martin [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, February 07, 2002 3:53 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: Moving mailboxes to another server Quick overview: We have one domain controller and two member servers in the Forest; all are running Server 2000 with Service pack 2 and latest security patches. We run Antigen 6.2 on our Exchange 5.5 server. We were advised by Sybari support to include the filter, *.*.*, which they said are often viruses (e.g. annakournikova.jpg.vbs). We tried it for a while, but were quarantining too many valid user attachments, and they rebelled, so I compromised and removed that filter. We are filtering exe, bat, cmd, com, vbs, vb, js, shs, lnk, pif, scr, hta, htm, and *.*} (whatever that is). Also we are using three AV engines, and updating them frequently. As I understand it, the *.*.* filter would only come into play on a new virus for which we don't yet have the signature, and is some other scripting language that we are not filtering. I'd like to get feedback on the protection compromise of not filtering *.*.* attachments. How many of you are using that filter? Do you think it adds significant protection? Have we missed any valuable filters? TIA Bob Peitzke Information Systems Manager Sander A. Did the message originate outside the Exchange org? If so, how do you know that it wasn't BCC'd to the user? BCC won't show up in the headers, AFAIK. Does the incorrect recipient have a name close to the people that were supposed to get it? Re: Why how what can be done
I just did this on an XP Pro machine with my GPO that doesn't let people browse the network they still can't. Let me check my GPO exact settings for you. OK here it is in a nut shell!! 1) I have set up a GPO that specifies the users can't browse my network = (no computers near me no entire network) This worked great. I tested = this in no way was the user able to browse my network for computers or = users. 2)In the same GPO I also specified that the users My Documents are to be = redirected to a HIDDEN share on a server. 3) WE merged from SendMail to Exchange. Now they can browse the network = through outlook. Heres how how can I prevent this open outlook go to VIEW select Outlook Bar Folder List. On the Outlook Bar (Outlook shortcuts) click the Other short cuts tab. I see a folder with my logon name. If you do to click on it.=20 This shows all of your MY Documents. Now look at the Folder List scroll up down. I see all my users all = computers on my network.=20 Why is this how can I prevent this? RE: repair mailbox
One other thing that you may want to consider is that you are going to have to wait until your Directory has synchronized before you can add his mailbox back in. Conversely, you can also follow Q179065 and adjust that value in the registry. Forcing a directory update also won't hurt. Also, you have to be careful with Exmerge (not careful meaning you will mess up the file). Exmerge depends on the directory name to be successful. For the export, it doesn't matter - it creates the pst file with the format of directoryname.pst. However, in order to import successfully, the new directory name must either match exactly the old directory name (on the new mailbox I mean), OR, you can just rename the .pst file to match the new directory name. Either way should work fine. As a last comment, if you are at all unsure about what you are doing, it might be wise to call PSS (Microsoft Product Support Services). It costs $245, but they will be able to step you through the process and remove any doubts about what you are doing. Heck, they may even have a solution that doesn't require you to do this. We are using BE 8.5, and looking in to moving to BE8.6 to be able to backup to a file, for added recovery possibilities. We have done restores numerous times, and everything goes smoothly, but we haven't tried the restoring using just the logs. Working on seeing if I can replay a couple of days of mail, on a week old full backup, to see what happens. :) Will let you guys know if this actually works, or just causes problems. We have Exchange 5.5 sp4 installed on NT4SBS When I attempt to send mail via our Exchange Server to [EMAIL PROTECTED] my mail is bounced and the return message looks like it comes from Mail Delivery Subsystem [[EMAIL PROTECTED]] The bounce message is as follows he original message was received at Fri, 8 Feb 2002 16:28:25 GMT from esweeper.th.hiway.co.uk [195.12.4.201] - The following addresses had permanent fatal errors - [EMAIL PROTECTED] (reason: 554 5.0.0 rewrite: excessive recursion (max 50), ruleset 3) - Transcript of session follows - ... while talking to pop3.hiway.co.uk.: MAIL From:[EMAIL PROTECTED] SIZE=1016 RET=FULL 554 5.0.0 rewrite: excessive recursion (max 50), ruleset 3 554 5.0.0 [EMAIL PROTECTED]... They even get the message if from the outside a/c I send the mail to their office address and it is delivered to them as an alternative recipient (Under delivery options) It only looks like only mail that we try to send internally to these users but is being forwarded out to them is not going. I am really baffled I have coppied the headers from the returned email below. If anyone can decipher them and tell me whets going wrong I would be very grateful. Auto-Forward to Alternative Recipient Not working
Well, not 100%. I have a bunch of users that have email accounts on our systems but all their mail is being automatically forwarded to their other Internet accounts. I have their Internet accounts setup as Alternate Recipient and Deliver messages both to recipient and alternate recipient is NOT SELECTED so all messages that come into that mailbox get automatically forwarded to the Internet address specified in Alternate Recipient field and nothing gets accumulated in the Inbox. Well, messages do get forwarded without any problems but copies of these messages are still sitting in the Inbox. I can't figure out why.. Unchecking Deliver messages both to recipient and alternate recipient is the right thing to do when I only want the Alternate Recipient to get mail and not the local mailbox, right? Am I missing something? Thanks! P.S. Exchange5.5 SP4 + all hot fixes on WinNT4 SP6a + all hot fixes; OWA on the separate server, if it makes any difference. Moving an Exchange server
I have a complicated situation. We had a server with exchange on it die, so we brought exchange on another one. Since it was working we left it that way (with exchange on both) and looked at buying a new server to out exchange on. We have done so and now will move all of exchange onto our new server. Here is what I am going to do: 1. Move mailboxes to new server. 2. Re home public folders 3. Test by bringing down both of the existing servers. 4. Uninstall exchange on first one and then the other server. That will leave only the one (new and running W2K with Ex5.5; old ones were running NT w/ 5.5). What else do I need to do? -Roger Hanna [EMAIL PROTECTED] List Charter and FAQ at: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/exchange_list_charter.htm
