Hello All,

I did a little research, but didn't find anything...I remember reading that
there is a process that removes permission's to pub folders periodically
based on account status (ie deleted, removed). Was I dreaming?? (hopefully
not about exchange). What I have are a bunch of left over admin names listed
in the permission's for pub folders. Not a big deal, just annoying...

This
is definitely a documented issue.  We worked with Dell on this.
The reason other people aren't having this problem is because it only shows

  Hello
all,I've got what may be a unique problem. It appears that the
Dell PERC RAIDcontroller  (various revisions, versions, etc) is
crashing Exchange 5.5 SP4on a fairly regular basis. Exchange is left
in a corrupt state and must berestored from a backup. This is our
  platform:Win2k Server SP1Dell 4400 PowerEdge ServerPerc
3/3Di RAID controller with writeback caching turned *OFF*Exchange 5.5
SP4About 120 users  and an IS of 23 GB.2 Containers on the
RAID, one RAID 5 (holds the priv and pub.ebd) and theother a simple
1-disk container (hold the logfiles)This is the root Exchange site
for our company; each office (about 60) has alocal Exchange 5.5
installation. For about a year, we've had problems with the RAID
and Exchange. On multipleoccasions we've experienced a failure in the
RAID which caused the RAID tofail-out a disk drive (although
subsequent diag shows no disk problems).Exchange has become corrupt
consistently when this happened. Also, when theRAID controller issues
a "Battery Charge OK" message (it is a trickle-chargecache battery),
Exchange often hiccups with a trashed log file or
corruptdatabase. We've reported this problem to Dell tech support
repeatedly. Over the year,we've been given new RAID cards, SCSI
controllers, disk drives, motherboards, as well as a totally new
server. The problem keeps occurring, and now we're looking at mirroring
software in order to recover morequickly. But we have no real
solution.Question #1: is this a unique situation, or are others
experiencing problemssuch as this?Questrion #2: is the size of
our IS a problem (23 GB), since the start ofthese problems seems to
have followed on the heels of the growth of IS?Any feedback on
this would be much appreciated, as it is driving us batty.[EMAIL PROTECTED]

  Hi

  Question 1 : I have 2 DCs with Ex 2k on a 3rd server (member)
When using AD User and Computer on the 2 DC's and looking at the user
properties, we don't see the exchange options (tabs) or Exchange Task
When using AD user and computer on the Ex2K server, the user properties
  has
the Exchange tabs, and Exchange Task (righ clicking on the user) is
  there
  Why ?
  Question 2 :
Why does my exchange 2000 server (Member server) was having problem when my
2nd DC died ? In the Event viewer, the exchange server was trying to talk the
the second dc everytime I was trying to address an eMail to someone. I was
expecting him to talk to the 1st DC that was still there.
  QUESTION 3 :
My second DC just died and Ex 2k server seem to try to talk to DC 2..
  When
creating user, the smtp address [EMAIL PROTECTED] does not appear...IS it
beacause of lack of communication between the ex2k server and the second
  DC
he is trying to reach (event viewer error on trying to contact the dead
DC. That was the second DC in the AD )
I have reinstalled a W2K machine as a server, did a DC promo and made it
again the 2nd DC's. Is it ok ? I have been told by MS that when adding a 2nd
DC to an AD that the SchemaMaster role is beeing magically transfered to the
2nd DC. Then if my 2DC died, and was replace with a brand new 2nd DC' then the
ScheMaster role is may be not anywhere ?

You are not going to install it into the
Exchange. Blackberry server should be different box with Exchange

This fix should be applied to Blackberry box,
not to Exchange server.
Blackberry box will use just one mailbox for

on one of my machines and in reading the docs I had a quick
question.  They mention that we need to update the CDO.dll according
to Q289606.  I have downloaded the file but I want to be sure if it
goes on the exchange server or the blackberry server?
If on exchange has anyone had a problem with it?  I
hate installing into exchange.  Gives me a cold sweat just to think
  about it.
  Thanks

It's
running all by itself on a dual processor P II 300 with 1 GB RAM. The annoying
part isn't having to reboot, it's having someone call saying they aren't getting
messages. (Like the CEO)

  good
to know - exact opposite of what I heard from a buddy running a law firm -
server isn't really doing that much so a weekly reboot doesn't scare me to
much - I get to beta it for our site then roll it out if it works.  Will
  add users v-e-r-y gradually.

We
have it on it's own box and it's not very robust; i.e. we have to re-boot
every two weeks or so because it craps out.

Trying to shut down the service hangs and you have to re-boot
anyways. RIM needs better software that doesn't crash so
often.

Jim,
You are not going to install it into the
Exchange. Blackberry server should be different box with Exchange
Administrator software. This is not Exchange server.
This fix should be applied to Blackberry
box, not to Exchange server.
Blackberry box will use just one mailbox
for sending messages to wireless network.

  If it's
any consolation Lance, it's banging the hell out of me also. Seems to
replicate richad20.dll and *.eml files on servers. I'm talking hundreds of
thousands of the suckers. Worst is, CAI claims the virus pattern files I
updated this morning before the attack takes care of it! Another load of horse
manure form an already suspect company. If anyone knows exactly how this
works, and I mean exactly, I'd sure like to know. Even with all workstations
shut down, it still replicates itself on my PDC as fast as I can delete the
dll and eml files. On infected workstations, repairing the sys.ini file and
deleting load.exe from the \\windows\system directory does not help.
On reboot, the sys.ini is modified again and the load.exe is back in place.
Making the system.ini file read only seems to help. Good
  luck.

LOL...it's ok, I don't even know what your current employer does, so we're
even. (Of course now I'm at the website)

No they aren't aware, but my manager has a feeling this was coming. He
understands that I'm young and not-too-experienced in the field and that I
won't get too far working where I am. If I make the switch, I'll be joining
a team of 100+ networking guys/gals for Alaska's largest Credit Union which
strives to be the technological leader. I had the opportunity to tour their
operations and it was quite impressive. The educational experience alone is
worth the move.

Second, yes - export into PST, if small enough, send to floppy, otherwise,

Subject: Archive to PST?

Hey folks,

I may be accepting a job with another company in the next month or so. I'd
like to be able to archive/save certain email folders full of emails so that
I can save them for reference. I've got an Compaq IPAQ which stores all of
my contacts/notes/tasks (of course the task list I don't need) but it only
syncs with the Inbox/deleted/outbox/sent folders and I don't think it would
hold all of the emails I'd like to keep. Can I archive subfolders to a PST
and them transfer them to another machine and import them back into another
mailbox on a different exchange server?

I've probably made it sound more complicated then it is. Can anyone shed
some light on this?

Secondly, we have been able to fix all the problems we've had. In a pervious

have any idea how hard that is to sell to management with the talent we

Frankly, I don't understand it either but that's just the attitude where I
work. I do ask for help when I need it, which is why I use this and other

Yes, this list can be considered a tool, much like tech support.

Would I accuse you of not being able to do your job participating here?
Probably not.

I don't care if your company has ALL the MCSE's. Very few of them wrote the
friggin' products. The diversity of Microsoft's products alone does not
allow for knowing everything. Or even remotely close.

Mine, and I sure as h*ll don't like it. See the answer to Jamie Arnold's

To be quite honest with all of you, the first time I saw Exchange was 10
months ago when the company moving into the building hired me to run their
corporate network. I did Notes before. That's one of the many reasons this
list, and others, is so valuable.

What kind of job description holds the title "must know everything"?

I'm not sure what high tech companies you're talking about, but wasting time
figuring out something that a tech phone call could have solved hours ago is
bad practice. Vendor Tech support is one of the tools at your disposal for
troubleshooting, especially when it comes to software.

Software has bugs. Generally most bugs aren't even discovered until after
release. Often they are communicated to the software vendor through tech
support calls.

I want to make sure I'm doing this right, as we need to "reclaim" our old
Exchange server and commit it to new use.

Step 5 states to make "replicas of the public folders on the new server." Is
there a good way to do this for ALL public folders? Or do I simply go into
each public folder on the list and set up a replication scheme and schedule?
I'm a little slow on the uptake of public folder replication between servers
in the same site - any info would be appreciated. I don't want to strand
any public folders.

Exchange 5.5 for both servers, old is running SP3, new is SP4, both on
Windows NT Server 4.0 SP6.

Thanks, Sean

Nothing yet, the AIAG has a program where they embed them in tires so
when a car rolls off the line it passes in front of the reader which
captures the VIN and the serial numbers of the tires.  Then, when
there's a recall, they can easily figure out where the bad tires went.
We're considering doing the same thing in our transmissions and other key
components we produce.  No concrete plan yet, just a lot of
ideas.

Public folders are replicated to all servers by default. Make sure they are
all rehomed to th new server as per Q152959.

These servers should be on the same sp, too.

Just a quick question. Is it posible to setup directory replication one way
between sites. I have a site that has a new Exchange2k box running the
OWA2 and another test server. So far all testing has went fine. At this
point we are wanting to populate the directory on the non-exchange2000

main organization doesnt know about the testing site, but the testing site
can see all of the organization.

RE: One way Directory Replication

2001-10-02 Thread Greg Page

Opps!

Assuming that the non-exchange 2000 server is a DC, which is the only way to
get the AD on a computer is for it to be a catalogue server. I can't get to
my AD domain right now, but I don't remember seeing anything about one-way
replication in the settings. The concept of AD and Catalog Servers is that
changes can be made anywhere in the domain without having to connect to the
Operations Master.

Why do you want to hide replication?

Did you run the EXCHANGE optimizer after you installed the additional RAM?

Subject: E2K's memory usage

Hello,

We have 1 E2K server w/SP1, on top of a W2K server w/SP2. It runs on an IBM
Netfinity 5100 w/933 PIII processor. At first, it had 512MB of RAM. And
there was plenty memory left. But the size of the memory used by the
STORE.EXE process kept on increasing. Pretty soon, all the server's memory
was being used (or commited). Recently, I decided to buy 512MB more. The
server is now running w/1024MB of RAM. Again, the first weeks, there was
memory left, about 350MB. But now, the "freakin'" STORE.EXE uses almost
600MB of RAM and the server's memory is "maxed" once again. I would be
surprised if we had A LOT of users, but right now, we are about 20 users. No
OWA. Straight mail and a small Public store (about 150MB).

What on earth is happening??? Is this normal? What ca I do to improve the
situation?

Thank you,

Eric

Once again, with no E2K running, I miss those subtle little hints in the
subject.

There is no Exchange Optimizer in Exchange 2000 (see subject).
