That's not a very good long-term storage solution.

That is still to be decided.
I have a few files stored that way for easy access wherever I am.
Not much, only about 2 GB, but they're always there since 3 years now.

It's no replacement for a hard drive, it's an additional security layer.

And can your really trust big companies to maintain your data in the
cloud? T-Mobile Sidekick users recently discovered that you really
can't.

Correct.
That's why I have 3 copies up there.

Plus, I am wary of giving any more leverage to Google than they
already have with their search engine monopoly.

I don't think encrypted files on a few free mail accounts with
randomly chosen names will give them any clue about me. ;-)

Last of all, who wants to wait on the download? Even with high
bandwidth broadband, an external drive is going to be faster --
you'll long ago have finished running the installer before you've
even finished the download from the cloud.

If you have the drive with you.
And if it's not affected by the virus (crash, malfunction) that caused
the need for its use.

As I already said, it's a backup solution.
A hard drive is better for sure regarding access times an available
storage amount, but it has it's shortcomings (vulnerability to local
threats, to be kept up-to-date manually).

If, for any reason, you can't acces such drive, the GMail account can
be very helpful.

Not that this helps the situation much, but it doesn't

Oh, my Mac has given me a few worries, too! Like that whole font
thing, where you could have several different versions of a font
available at different levels, causing only certain characters to
show up as other characters in some Finale documents...

Installing Finale only as administrator turned out to be a good

You might consider burning it to a CD so that if you have a
meltdown of your harddrive you can install Fin2010 and then
run the update patch without having to download it again.
Or you can simply delete it. It's no longer needed once
you've installed it.

Delete it once you know everything is working, or if you are really
anal, burn it to a CD with the rest of your backups so you can get it
back if MakeMusic shuts its website, refuses to give out older
updates, or if you find you have to downgrade later on.

I delete them, myself.

I would not do that, myself, as you then end up having to re-download
it should you need to re-install Finale later.

I maintain a folder for software updates and keep all the patches and
updaters in there. I happen to now have a 1TB external firewire hard
drive where I store all this stuff, so I don't need to burn it to
CD/DVD any longer.

I'd recommend that anybody who has a spare $100 acquire a 1TB
external drive. They are just too cheap not to use any more!
Hopefully by the time those fill up, we'll be able to buy 20TB hard
drives for roughly the same price. ;)

That won't necessarily fix the problem -- it depends on whether or
not the registration process is performed by the Finale executable,
or is handed off to a different module. If the former, RUN AS
ADMINISTRATOR will do the job. If it's the latter, it won't, as the
other module will get the default user-level security token, not the
Finale executable's admin-level security token.

If that's the case, then it's a design error in Finale, perhaps
because the version in question predates the release of Vista.
