The Mid-Winter Meeting and classes were great! I got some really nifty
ideas for making pony-desensitizing-things from Heike Lewandowski and she says
we don't really have to hang around crime scenes to get that yellow
tape...Home Depot is quicker and safer! Bob Long's talk and demo on packing
with
Fjords into the gorgeous back-country places available to us in the USA and
Canada was really exciting. I don't know if Braveheart and I are ready to
meet our first bear though! JanetMc Nally's Farming with Fjords was really
interesting and the log skidding with Tyler proved that I'll need to practice
hopping back and forth over logs in motion a LOT before BH (or Bogie) and I
try hiring out to any logging operations. I was really impressed with the
care and caring involved in a good theraputic riding program...the horses and
the helpers have to be pretty special individuals!
Anyhow, as you've probably guessed, it was a wonderful weekend. After
getting home and retrieving my ponies and dog from their various hotels, the
first thing I did was to order a BUNCH of felting wool from HalcyonYarn.
Once it all arrives, I will use what we learned on Friday night to begin
felting my own herd of Fjords...it was really fun! I was sorry there wasn't
enough time to try everything because the people who chose to try rosmaling
seemed to be having a pretty good time too!
And, as you've already heard, we got some hints about stylish haircuts
from Joni and Jock so I'm eyeballing Bogie as a potential piano-key-haircut
candidate. I think he'd look quite fetching!
Stay warm everybody...spring has GOT to be showing up sometime soon!

Kay Van Natta
and Braveheart, who's heard about Cedar Rapids and can hardly wait
and Bogie, who would rather focus on shedding

I also wanted to add to Joni Griffin's GREAT write up, a HUGE thank you to
ALL Those that were part of putting on this meeting/clinic. I believe Joni
mentioned everyone. Joni and Wanda Hase were the committee heads, but we
sure had a lot of great members step up to the plate to help with the
clinic. I hope we didn't miss anyone's name, it is not on purpose if we did,
it was a group effort!! All were volunteers, all gave up their time ,
shared their knowledge and talent and I hope they all know it was much
appreciated. I also want to thank ALL the club members for coming and
supporting their club. As a board member we are often asked just what we do
for the club members. Well. I think part of what we try to do is educate our
members. These winter clinics are a great resource for many old and new
members. I'm sure some of our members, to them, the demos are old "hats".
They might not learn as much from them, as other, and this is mostly because
we have so many TALENTED members, but we had a LOT of new faces this year
and I know they all enjoyed it a lot.

MWFHC has a lot of changes underway this year, with the Fjord Breed Show
being moved to Cedar Rapids Iowa, that is a big change. We had been in one
place for 25 yrs., and change is never easy. It is just so nice when
members can keep supporting their club throughout all kinds of change.

WRITE DOWN JULY 16,17,18 Cedar Rapids Iowa. The place to be in July!!!

Again THANK YOU to all who helped with the Meeting/Clinic and all who came
to support the club.

Last Weekend was the MWFHC's Winter Meeting / Clinic. Was held in Orgeon WI,
very close to Madison WI. Was organized by Karen Hanson and Dawn Schlickman.
GREAT job they did !!! We had a GREAT line up of speakers, with a wide range
of topics from hands on basics, to understanding how to feed the Fjords, Vet
Care, Diseases, Dressage demo's, tips on trail riding and Ski Joering. That
was also hands on and WHAT A BLAST that was!!
The meal was great, the hotel was great, think there was around 65?? in
attenance and I had such a WONDERFUL time with all. I just love our club and
the Fjord horse. Thank you ALL for helping, for coming, for organizing,
really was another great time!

I had to fly out to N.D. for a funeral Tues/Wed or I would have written
sooner. Back home safe and sound. Lots of fog in our area, nervous last
night I wasn't gonna get back, but am home and working on the MWFHC's Breed
show in Blue Earth MN this July, Will be the Show's 25th Anniversary and we
are planning for a bigger and better Show !!! You will WANT TO BE THERE! We
have RETRO prices all classes will be $3 a class to celebrate our show and
this is what they were 25 yrs ago and a way to give back to our members!

On another note, the club has produced another DVD, "how to fit tack to your
fjord horse" and I'm VERY proud of it. It really is full of great
information. It has how to fit your saddle, both english and western, bits,
bridles, pads, girth/cinch, halters, and splint boots. (hope I didn't forget
anything). Michelle from Horsey Habit was our speaker on the DVD and she is
VERY knowledgeable. You may order it online, if it's not online at
www.mwfhc.org contact me, I'll mail it out to you. It's $15 includes
postage. Or if you want the mane trimming one you can get both for $20
includes shipping.

MWFHC WINER MEETING & CLINIC

Dan Nauman summed it up when he said"I have one word to say about the
MWFHC clinics and auctions.WOW" Dan also said," The Fjord Horse
has had a terrific effect on you folks and though small, the MWFHC has thus
far proven to be an extra special organization." Dan is correct, we have a
wonderful organization made up of caring individuals, who loves their
fjords,
share their knowledge and skills and are always eager to learn more.

Friday nights social hour was a great time to renew old friendship and meet
many new members. Very nice blueT-shirts, logo designed by Pat Holland,
were sold for the Blue Earth 20th year celebration.

Saturday morning started with our business meeting and Karin Peterson
proceeded in her friendly efficient manner to get all agenda items
covered in record time. The Blue Earth Show and the La Crosse Evaluation
both seem very organized and ready to go. Check out details on
http://mwfhc.org

We them proceeded to the MN Equestrian Center(more details about center
below). Our clinicians, Wes Licht and John Gurtner, did an excellent job
of
starting their programs with the basics and continuing to higher levels -
there was something for every one to see and learn. A big thank you to those
who brought horses for demonstration and hands on participation --- Bob &
Therine Gudknecht and family brought Ashwood Birger & SCF Reinhart; Michael
Jehlicka and Helen Schadler with Wood's Lola; Linda Syverson-Kerr with
Spruce Hill Marcus and Odden's Norske Wood Sunniva; and Phillip Odden and
Else Bigton with Smedsmo Graen, Odden's Bjarne and two youngsters. Many
thanks to these owners who provided hands on experience for so many people.
Wes started the driving portion of the clinic with the arena filled with
many obstacles and the horses just in halters. He wanted to allow the
horses a time to acclimate to the new surroundings and the audience. The
horses were soon all walking over ground poles, blue water-looking tarps,
thru L's and cones, around barrels, putting letters in the mailbox, etc.
Wes reminded the participants to stand and lead their horses with a loose
line-
holding tight makes the horse want to pull against you. As the morning
progressed
the horses were in driving harness and were ground driven through the
obstacles.
This soon turned to competition and the obstacles were assigned points and a
ground driven gamblers choice was in full action. It was fun to watch and
cheer
them on as Linda won with the most points. During lunch several had the
opportunity to try the hands on grounddriven courses. After lunch as
Marcus
and the pair of Birger and Reinhart were harnessed and put to the carts the
audience was invited into the arena for an up close and personal look at
harnessing and questions were answered. -- What a great learning
experience!
Wes showed the steps he takes to introduce the horse to the cart. When a
horse is
first put to the cart a header should walk alongside the horse with a long
line
to assure a safe and successful learning experience. The rest of the
afternoon
was spent learning and improving driving techniques. Cones and Gamblers
Choice
were again part of the competition. The competition at Blue Earth will
really be
tough this year if we can put all this information to use! Thanks Wes!

Sunday morning, with 6 inches of snow on the ground in Winona,
John Gurtner started the program with a Showmanship Class.
Many were interested in the fine details of standing the horse properly and
moving so as to not interfere with the judges view. Once again there was
lots of
hands on participation and competition will be tough at Blue Earth.

Bob Gudknecht and family supervised the many trying their hand at the log
skid
thru cones. They not only did singles but pairs as well and the majority
were women.
Several husbands were shocked to see their wives out there competing. They
were
preparing for the first ever women's only Blue Earth Log Skid Class.

At the other end of the arena, John Gurtner was explaining proper techniques
for lunging
a horse and giving details on bending a horse, turning on the forehand and
haunches. He
had lots of helpful comments for the riders. Thanks John!

We finished at 12:30 with everyone agreeing they learned lots and loved the
hands on.
We are looking for your suggestions for the 2006 winter clinic. What would
you like to see
and any suggestions for clinicians?

Saturday evenings auction, organized by Dan Nauman, Toni Farrell and
committee,
was a hugh success. Approximately 35 members donated over 80 fabulous items
from note cards, oil paintings, hand forged rose, hand carved stall name
plate, sleigh bells.
There was something for everyone in every price range. Rich Hotovy
sure can talk fast and keep every on their toes and laughing.
We truly have a talented membership and thank you to the bidders too.

MWFHC WINTER MEETING/CLINIC

2001-02-25 Thread Dave Walter
This message is from: "Dave Walter" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I wanted to write about the MWFHC winter's meeting/clinic that was held this
last weekend in Galena IL. We just got home, got the horse settled in and
everything else unpacked as well. I had to write and since I am going in
for knee surgery tomorrow morning(have to be there at 4:30AM, surgery
7:30AM-why 3 hrs who knows?) I didn't want to put off writing this incase I
could not get to the computer for a few days. The weekend was just
wonderful. The weather was iffy, but for the most part the bad stuff was
not bad or we got it at night. I think Gayle and Anne would disagree, they
thought it was pretty cold and nasty. Heard they had asked to hold the
meeting in Hawaii but the club was just too cheap!!! (kidding) I was
fortunate enough to be asked to bring our gelding, OH Silas to ride the
introductory eval. english test with Anne Appleby commenting. She is
wonderful! I can not say enough good about her, she is honest, sweet,
knowledgeable, humble, great with horse and people, very nice to be around,
just makes you feel so comfortable. I felt like I had private lessons with
her all weekend, what an honor. I rode the test and then Anne cut it down
and showed the people what some of the things Judges are looking for, steady
tempos, smooth transitions, distinct gaits, bend, on the bit and the people
seemed to really like that. They were able to see the difference as she
would ask me to show them a good trot, then a slow or fast trot, one that
was slow, fast, slow, fast, etc. Having a visual helps so much. Nancy
Hotovy rode the western introductory and the advance with Gayle Ware
commenting. Another woman with incredible knowledge. I did not know how
funny Gayle is, she keeps you in stitches all the time. These two woman are
just incredible, you people out west you are very very blessed I was
just trying to soak in everything they had to say. I know our club was
very glad they came to share and help us learn how we can show our Fjords to
the best of their ability. Rich Hotovy had Bob Gudknecht driving his mare
in the draft test as Rich told what was to be done. Hotovy's used the same
mare for riding as for draft and she is wonderful! Smooth, steady and
totally willing and obedient. Rich has trained her right, when she hears
him start to talk to other people, I think she knows she better take a nap
as it could be awhile, cause she never moves until told to, and if you know
Rich it could be a while! They just did a outstanding job. Believe we had
around 70 in attendance. Those that came out inspite of the weather were
sure glad they did. The MWFHC is a progressive and active group. One that
works well together and yet is very diverse, it's a great club. A big Thank
you to Green Valley Farms in Galena IL, Pat Holland, Sophie and Howard
Fielder plus staff all work so hard to put on a great meeting/clinic. On
Sunday GVF had an Open House to show off their new stallion plus their other
studs. I know everyone was impressed with their stock. They truly are
looking to keep the breed pure with great quality. They should be very
proud. Not only do they have great stock they have a great facility where
they can train them the way they need to be, so they will be great quality
working Fjords. Thank you again, Anne and Gayle for surviving our Midwest
winter, I'll try and work on the executive committee to move it to Hawaii
next year, actually that sounds good to me!! Any Fjords in Hawaii
though
