Hi Richard,

I've been using my 5000A for a couple of years now with my XP core2duo from
Dell and I have it a fully automated system with an Alpha amp, antenna
switching, SteppIR antenna and rotor all being controlled by the flex and
DDUtil

So far I have had very few computer problems but, I know what you mean about
having second thoughts some times; like when I have to wait a couple of
minutes for the PC to boot up before I can run the radio  But after all
has been said and done it’s the best receiver I have ever used and DX
chasing is more fun now than ever before.

So, I have thought of going to one of the big box radios but no joy, none of
them have the real time panadapter and so on

Have fun with what ever you choose  buy the way I have a 6500 on
order

I'm in a quandary. I've been having trouble for some time now running my
flex5KA under windows on my iMac (under Boot Czmp). I've been unable over
the course of several weeks to fix the BSOD problem which came about
shortly after the upgrade to 2.4.4 So I have several choices and would like
your input.

1. Buy a new windows only computer - which off the shelf model are you
using successfully? I'm also considering one of Neal's.

2. Pay for tech support to try and remotely fix my problem and stick with
my iMac.

3. Get out of the SDR business all together and sell my flex as I've become
a bit jaded with radios that are computer dependent. On the other hand it's
established an expectation that will be hard to match.

What would you do? I'd be grateful for suggestions and computer
recommendations.

A friend and are now thoroughly confused on this whole antenna port
question….  In a recent email you say only one antenna to an SCU and in a
previous question I asked on the 24th you said I can have a receive antenna
connected as well as a main antenna ( I assume that means I can switch
between antennas  like on the 5000A)….  So which is it???

 

On this whole question regarding antenna inputs could someone at Flex PLEASE
draw a diagram!!

Hello Jeff,

I have noticed that too but I found in my case it was due to my serial ports
not always being connected when DDUtil was coming up or the serial ports not
being connected to the PC/or on when the PC was coming up...

Unless the ports are assigned the same each time you bring up your PC,
DDUtil will not know what to do and start assigning incorrect port addresses
for you.

Other than this issue I have never had DDUtil not remember the correct port.

I'm wondering if anyone else has had trouble with DDUtil not remembering the
settings after it's been shut down?  About 75% of the time when I start up
the program, at least one of the COM port settings has changed.  What I did
was put everything exactly like I want it, make notes in the space provided
as to programs and ports, and then save the profile.  That way I can easily
recall the profile after the program loads up to have the necessary configs
to operate.  It's an easy fix but a little annoying.  It works fine after
recalling the program.


In case it matters, here's my order of operations:  turn on PS, turn on
Flex5k, load DDUtil, load Minideluxe (in RCP2 as suggested and not RCP1),
load HRD Logger  I'm using what I believe to be the most current version
of DDUtil which is 2.0something.  I can't remember the exact number but I
did upgrade from 1.8 and it's a whole lot more stable now.  The computer is
Win7 Ultimate x64.  Maybe I just need to uninstall and re-install program? 
I know VSPmgr specifically says to run in WinXP compatibiltiy mode as
Admin.  Do I need to do that with this program, too?  Also I think I
remember the instructions for VSPmgr saying to save it to C:\ and not in
Program Files as windows typically wants to install it.  I couldn't find
anything specifically recommending these actions for this program.  Maybe
that would help?  I think maybe these programs are written my the same
person?


Also, one last question I haven't found addressed in the wiki is what
program should be used for RCP1?  I only ask because Minideluxe said not to
use it there, which is where I would've naturally thought to put it.  Is it
reserved for some specific program or just a conflict with that program for
whatever reason?  I'm really enjoying this learning process and playing
around with SDR.  All that can be done with software control using just a
computer and firewire cable totally amazes me! Thanks for the input or maybe
leading me in the direction to find out more.  Enjoy the holiday.

Dennis,

That certainly sounds like your FireWire driver is not keeping with the
higher loading presented by the second receiver.  Try different Mode
settings in the FlexRadio FireWire driver.  Also, try different audio buffer
sizes.  Make sure you have the Windows IEEE-1394 hotfix for XP.  You can
find the instructions in the Knowledge Center.

The shape factor degrades as you go up in sample rate.  This is on the to do
list but requires extensive code rewrite to make one shape factor for all
rates.

My radio is the 5000A and I notice the BW is too wide only on the main RX

[Flexradio] Transmit motorboating with 2nd receiver on during transmit!

Hello all,

I have been experiencing an unusual bug with my 5000A and the 2nd receiver
when I transmit in AM, or put out a steady carrier.  People on the other end
hear very loud motor-boating of my signal at around 400Hz.  Same happens
when I put a steady carrier out there.  The motor-boating stops when I shut
off the 2nd receiver.  I have a GAP vertical connected to the 2nd receiver
via a coax switch so I can disconnect the GAP if needed but that doesn't
stop the motor-boating, only shutting off the 2nd receiver does.

I'm running XP with core 2 Duo hardware, PSDR 2.0.22, and all the latest
firmware and software updates.  This also happens on any band from 80m to 6m
and I'm only running 25w.

By the way, the GAP is 70' from then main tower with the horizontal antennas
on it.  Also, when I look at my signal from the 5000A on a monitor scope I

will help isolate the RX2 and TX.

No, the RX2-IN is not shorted out, but the Gerald comment is dead on
applicable.  70' separation should be fine, particularly for the bands where
you are not in the near field.

Don't know about shorting the input, but it may not be necessary - back in
July 2009, Gerald gave us some specs to work with as far as tolerable input
RF levels to the receivers are concerned:

Well, the install from 1.18.5 to 2.0.22 went as easy as you-all said it
would. My 5000A is sounding better then ever especially after I realized I
had the font size set to large instead of normal  Now the screens all
look just great

Hello Dennis -

I found (On Win7) that if you have the font size greater that 100%, the 
display of the Flex is distorted, on startup.  Simply go to 
setup>appearance>Skins, and re-select the one you want.  That seems to bring

back the screen to normal.

 I have also noticed this issue. It surfaced with 1.18.1 and bug number 2240
was opened to address the issue on May 27, 2009. It is a significant setback
in the reception of AM signals. I would think it should have been addressed
by now or at least the status of the bug should have been updated as to what
Flex intends to do about it.

Anthony,

The NR goes through a short training process,  even with each change 
that you make to the settings in the DSP => Options tab..  The overall 
effect is dependent on the bandwidth of the receiver passband.   Try 
this,  lower the number of "Taps", (I've got mine right now to 39) ,  
then drop the "Delay" (try 30)  ,  and adjust the "Gain" (mine at 17)   
but you can adjust them where you like,   but try dropping the Delay 
first,  this will decrease the time before the changes take over.   Then 
adjust to match your conditions and taste..

Hello all,

I have a new Flex5000A and for some reason the external PTT stopped 
working??  I am using DDUtil to drive my steppir and 2800 rotor and using 
DX4WIN as my logging program.  I have everything working together very 
nicely in automatic mode.  I tried using the external PTT (pluged in the
back) and it doesn't work any more?  I tried the Flex by it self with the 
other programs off and still no joy.  I shutdown the flex and restarted 
everything and still no joy?  I verifyed the PTT switch was working.  At 
this point I could use a fresh idea?

[Flexradio] External PTT not working?

Hello all,

I have a new Flex5000A and for some reason the external PTT stopped 
working??  I am using DDUtil to drive my steppir and 2800 rotor and using 
DX4WIN as my logging program.  I have everything working together very 
nicely in automatic mode.  I tried using the external PTT (pluged in the 
back) and it doesn't work any more?  I tried the Flex by it self with the 
other programs off and still no joy.  I shutdown the flex and restarted 
everything and still no joy?  I verifyed the PTT switch was working.  At 
this point I could use a fresh idea?

If you look outside of your own personal needs you will see that the Flex 
5000 was Flex's first really serious entry into high performance 
transceivers.  As much as the SDR-1000 changed the world for me 
personally,  it was never meant to be a high end transceiver project. That 
it got as far as it did bespeaks of the tenacity and cleverness of its 
designer.


On the Flex 5000, though it is Flex's first major entry, it made it at the 
top of the list of entries in receiver performance on Sherwood Engineering 
and ARRL test sites and is still in the top two or three. The Flex 5000 
has extremely good performance for HF low bands.  Flex 5000 would not sell 
well if it had poor low band performance and there would be no 3000 if 
that were the case is my short version of my opinions on this matter.  The 
3000 does NOT equal the 5000 in receiver performance on the low bands.  I 
think most will agree that operating well on 160m-20m is more important to 
sales than 6m.


It takes a very inexpensive preamp for 6m to make it a top performer and 
it is a complete triviality to hook it into the loop provided on the back 
of the radio and adjust the operation to automatically use that preamp on 
6 and on 6 only.

I guess I just dont understand why the 5000 needs to have a preamp on 6

I have a very nice late model, 8 pin mike connector, SDR-1000 I would like 
to sell.  Its in like new condition and includes the FA-66 sound module with 
all audio cables including the parallel and firewire cables.  Nothing else 
to buy and you will be on the air with the new SDR technology.


This was my starter SDR radio.  For the price its a great way to get your 
feet wet in SDR techmology while your having fun working DX and enjoying the 
REAL TIME RADIO world of brick wall filters and Panadapters that give you a 
190KHz view of the band.  The SDR-1000 has dual watch, you can listen to two 
frequencies in the window at the same time; great for working cross band or 
outside the pileup.  In the few short months I had this radio I have doubled 
my country count on 40 and 80 meters.   So, I'm selling because I need to 
make room for my next Flex radio not because I'm getting our of SDR or ham 
radio.  I will send pictures on request.  Would like $850 bucks for the 
package plus shipping

I worked about 6 SSB stations and one CW station in the NE states and VE2 
and VE3 with my SDR-1000 at 500mw and 4ele at 75'.  No rx amp either. 
Signals were s9+ at times.  I checked the sensitivity of my SDR-1k on 6m and 
it was around -108dBm.  I could easily ear a 2microV at the input.  Not as 
bad as I thought it would be

My neighbor had a bad computer supply that wiped out 40 and 20m  Took me 
over a year to figure it out.  When I got him to shut it off all was better. 
He replaced the supply at his own expense and appologized for causing me the 
noise problem.   It pays to talk to your neighbors.

Wow is right.  It is hard to understand just how impressive 40F really is. 
40G sounds the most impressive but to the trained ear and tools, 40 F is 
amazing.  The Flex 5000 is utterly coherent through the oscillators.  It 
is two different DDS's that are synchronized by a built in system which 
Gerald made sure was supported.  As soon as we made the software 
oscillators coherent (identical in fact) and then applied a phase and 
amplitude modification (scalar) to one of them for phasing,  we get a 
phase stable system.


I was expecting it to work but I had no idea it would be this impressive.

More things like this are to follow.

Frank mentioned one person who had done some phasing experiments.  I would 
also like to mention Alex Shovkoplyas, VE3NEA who has done a really neat 
version.  I intend to steal his user interface idea completely.  It makes 
both mathematical and user sense.

[Flexradio] PowerSDR 1.14.0 question

Hello guys,

I just love the new scope and "Panascope" feature!!!   The display looks 
just like a monitor scope  My question is, how can I turn the scope 
vertical gain down without effecting the receivers gain???  The vertical 
gain is so much it goes off the screen or in Panascope mode it covers up the 
panadapter display.  The AGC-T control will lower the scope gain but it cuts 
the receiver gain too much.  So what am I missing??

able to download your latest MMTTY code with the VAC support I needed.  Got 
it working with Ham Scope and was able to do RTTY for the first time with my 
SDR1k & Ham Scope.

I have one ongoing request. I wish your code guru's would spend some time to
develop a mode specific AM noise blanker/noise reduction system.

I'm not only an avid short wave broadcast listener like many of you but I
also use the AM mode daily. Every time I switch to sideband and click on the
noise blanker I'm green with envy.

Please consider my request in the near future. I'm sure I speak for many
others that would enjoy AM much more if it had less noise. Thanks in
advance.

[Flexradio] HamScope and TTY with VAC

Dear Abby,

I'm not hearing voices anymore when monitoring PSK31 thanks to you-alls 
comments yesterday.  But I have one more problem I'll need you-alls help to 
solve

I'm using HamScope with MMTTY's RTTY engine and when I select RTTY in HamScope 
the signal goes away (the tace in the Hamscope window goes flat-line).  Looks 
like the Virtual Audio Cable connection gets broken every time I select RTTY.  
If I select any other mode everything works just fine...so what am I doing 
wrong?  

I noticed HamScope software allows you to make VAC connections but the MMTTY 
engine I saw doesn't?  Hope this isn't one of those catch 22's?

[Flexradio] I'm hearing voices in my PSK31 monitor mode???

Hello all,

You guys won't believe this but I'm hearing a voice when I'm in PSK31 mode 
using he Hamscope software with my SDR-1000/FA-66 combo...  I'm using the vCOM 
to PTT the rig and VAC to get the audio to/from the SDR.  Everything seems to 
be working just great in receive and all other modes!!

I couldn't believe it my self.  I hear what sounds like a female voice 
saying "five" every 5 seconds or so when I'm transmitting.   I discovered it 
when I decided I wanted to see of "Monitor" mode would allow me to hear my 
PSK31 transmission and it does but I hear the "VOICE"  I shut off the

Hello Ray,

Thanks for this very informative response to my question.  As it turns out I 
already had installed vCOM but I just didn't know how to use it so it was 
just sitting there  So after yours and Kirks emails it took me all of 2 
seconds to get my Flex keying up in PSK31
