do you install vdr_xine (plugin for freevo), any error message at freevo

Personally, I can't help as I've never used VDR, but some one on the
list may be able to help. It seems to be working for Juha.

There are just messages about what event has been sent.

Hi Juha,

Does xine work as a media play for you?

Please test the xine command that the plugin is attempting to run...
I think you can get this by setting DEBUG=1 in local_conf.py.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the patch, and sorry it took a while, been away...

I've been playing with the patch but can't seem to get it to work...
When trying to watch tv with vdr through freevo menu, the screen flashes
briefly, and this is what I get on the console:

VDR_XINE: EVENT MENU_PROCESS_END
VDR_XINE: EVENT VIDEO_START
VDR_XINE: VIDEO_START
VDR_XINE: EVENT PLAY_END
VDR_XINE: PLAY_END
VDR_XINE: EVENT VIDEO_END
VDR_XINE: VIDEO_END
VDR_XINE: EVENT VIDEO_END
VDR_XINE: VIDEO_END
VDR_XINE: EVENT MENU_PROCESS_END

Seems I have something missing?

Yes, that was exactly how I used to use the old vdr plugin, until I
noticed at some Freevo version that it always ended up with freevo
(python) hogging the whole CPU when df_xine was running. Well, after a
while, neither df_xine or fbxine had a VDR OSD anymore when used with
vdr-xine, so I gave up.

Yes, and right now xineliboutput is also for me the only working video
output method for VDR in my living room's htpc, where I only have
DirectFB due to the Matrox G400 DH. And it's really working almost great
(well, there is an issue with OSD scaling, but I can live with it for
now. So I'm too very intersted in running both Freevo2 and VDR in a
similar way, so when you get some time, please share ;-)

Do you remember the VDR python libray and how we hooked it into the
Freevo TV guide, leeching EPG data from VDR and sticking it into
Freevo's EPG? Well, then I was calling xine using the vdr-xine plugin
to view the stream.

Someone on the list or IRC channel requested something a bit different a
while back, when you hit TV in the main menu, go right into vdr-xine for
live TV, forget about recording or EPG in Freevo. I whipped up a
plugin, vdrmain.py, and replaced the TV menu with it. Worked fine.

VDR-xine was a bit sketchy, and somone make xinelibout for VDR.
Xinelibout is great, adding another input method to xine, xvdr:// so you
could watch TV from client <- server. All I had to do to start using
this in vdrmain.py was to modify the args in my Freevo config. :) Until
Freevo 2 TV is stable I'm using this on both of my Freevo boxes in the
house and it's great.

BTW guys I am still actively using VDR w/ Freevo 2, although I haven't
SVN updated that machine since Dischi changed some menu properties
(which broke the vdrmain plugin). I am using xinelibout to remotely
access the VDR server and it works awesome.

I am about to get a new job so maybe I can justify spending some "free"

A friendly reminder... i'm (and probably others as well) still
interested in the patch if you find it

Here tis, in all it's glory..

local_conf excerpt:
---
#plugin.activate('vdr_interface')
plugin.activate('vdrtv', level=5)
VDR_VIEWER_PLUGIN = 'xine'
VDR_XINE_FIFO_PATH = 'vdr:/tmp/vdr-xine/stream#demux:mpeg_pes'
---

Note, vdr_interface no longer required.. this new version works on
vdr-xine only when installed to allow xine to issue commands to vdr.
Can't what compile option that is though... vdr_interface is the
reason why the other versions of the plugin no longer work..

Let me know how it goes... I'm happy to help you get it running.

For Freevo 2.0, when the underlying kaa module will finally support
xine-lib as a display engine also over DirectFB, this would enable a
really smooth VDR integration via the xineliboutput plugin, as
displaying the VDR interface would be almost just like rendering some
media type supported by xine-lib (in this case, "VDR"). I imagine that a
VDR skin tailored at Freevo's look & feel and a proper event handling
management when displaying VDR via this route, could integrate VDR in a
really transparent way, without having to duplicate and re-invent
everything VDR can do sooo well (DVB-* and ivtv, I'm not saying it does
good "normal" analogue TV, that's more a hack), in Python code (sorry
Freevo dev folks, it's just my opinion, maybe other users also not
centered only on one media project, but wanting to have the best of more
than one project might also think similar). That's why there still are
users who prefer using both VDR and Freevo, and I'm sorry I did not have
time myself to maintain the vdr plugin for freevo, it's not even useful
for me right now in any Freevo-1.x, as I'm no longer seeing VDR's OSD in
df_xine or fbxine over DFB and did not have time to try to fix that. As
I said, vdr-xineliboutput might be another good aproach, but for Freevo
2. I want to check if vdr-xineliboutput's DirectFB experience can reach
to that of vdr-softdevice on my G400. If that's the case, and kaa.xine
will soon work well under DirectFB, I might try again to get some time
for this.

Cheers,
Lucian

Not me, i can't say yet as i've only used vdr-xine. Xine is already
integrated into freevo. So vdr-xine integrates fairly easily. I
can't say about xinelibout as i have no experience with it.

How does is the event system handled? I use a remote so lirc is used.
with the vdr-xine pluging freevo catches the lirc events and manages
(through the exusting xine inteface) the events into vdr.

I'm happy with the status quo but an not upset if no-one chooses to use it.

I'll look for the patch though...

Hi there. I haven't made any progress yet, haven't found the patches,
and am not much of a coder myself unfortunately... are you sure you sent
the patches? I've searched through the gmane archives and can't seem to
find them. The closest match is this, where you state that you'll send
them to the list hopefully 'tonight' :)

I just added to local_conf.py:

plugin.activate('command.CommandMainMenuItem', args=('/_config/freevo/vdr.fxd',
), level=5)

the vdr.fxd:

 vdr-sxfe --fullscreen xvdr://localhost

 VDR

In my distri there is a little bit more behind that, because I use
alternatively xawtv when a
full-featured DVB Card is used, but the above code should work for the
xineliboutput plugin.
You could also use it as a network client by replacing localhost with your
server name.

Hi. How did you go?

I have the vdr plugin working locally. I submitted patches but they
were never accepted as they need to go through sourceforge and I don't
have an account. They should be on the list though if you can find
them...

I'm interested in this other plugin.. Does vdr still run in the

Very interesting. This could be massaged directly for freevo 2.0
support. I chose vdr-xine as i wanted vdr to record while I wa not
connected to it..

Ok, great. So there's a patch against freevo or vdr or xineliboutput for
sure then somewhere to enable this... and I'll try to find it. Might
become a bit challenging though since my german ist nicht gut :)

switching distributions for this... ;)

Hmm, interesting. Didn't know of xineliboutput plugin before. Have you
used it on a client-only machine over network?

Anyhow, back to the case at hand. What I'm thinking is that there are
two programs (vdr and freevo) waiting for user input (ie. remote events)
and so they do have to know of each other so that either one understands
to ignore the events when the other one's active. And I think this is
what freevo-vdr plugin takes care of. But maybe there's the same
functionality provided by your distribution, don't know. Is it version
1.7 of freevo that your using? Or maybe I'm totally lost with my logic,
that is also always a possibilty ;)

Need to do some research on that, if I can't get this freevo-vdr plugin
working...

Thanks for the input Helmut!

In my distri ( Gen2VDR ) I have FreeVo and VDR.
In my eyes there is no need for a VDR plugin, just install vdr with the
xineliboutput plugin and
start the application vdr-sxfe as a command from FreeVo.

Hi,

Found this thread while fighting to get freevo 1.7 with vdr plugin
going. It seems the current vdr plugin isn't working for anyone with 1.7
(below is the traceback from my trial). In the above mail thread Mike
indicated that he might have a working version of it. Has anybody got it
or another solution? Are you Mike reading this?

Thanks in advance and a happy easter to everybody,

I don't know, do they? All while I'm watching a stream? As much as I
use xine for a vdr head end, vdr still does controls the channels and
pasues live tv etc. xine is just a thin client in that perspective.
Ubuntu's build of xine is flaky and so far I havn't been able to get
it to even tune to the card. So I went with what I knew.. That vdr
does DVB well ;-).

I'll check it out. Sometime ;-).

Yes I agree. But until we get the basics working it's going to be a
slow migration from other systems to the *great* freevo.

What I want right now (my mrs uses this box, and we use unencrypted
DVB-T only) is something that can:
i) record based on timers.
ii) pause live TV
iii) change channel's based on timer priorities.

VDR does this well, which is why I use it. But if freevo is nearly
there I'm happy to help with things like testing and *simple* fixes.
But I'm much of a coder..

kaa.record in svn should be able to do the same in the future. But we
need more developers to support all features vdr has.

vsdrp was a bad hack anyway. You want a real automatic control
interface to vdr or it is useless in the freevo 2.0 scenario. Maybe
some people could start a rip parts of vdr they like for freevo
2.0. We still miss CAM support.

Can't the ivtv_xine_tv plugin work with DVB (or be made to work) for
live pause? Also doesn't the upsoon plugin do what you want for forcing
recordings?

I got a "uber" cutdown version of the vdr plugin working last night.
I think I can get tvtime and xine working in the plugin again. Until
freevo can do stuff like pause live tv and force a channel switch
while I'm wathcing TV to force a recording to start; I think vdr or
something similar is the way to go..

So, Once I've cleaned up the code I'll submit a patch to devel.
Hopefully tonight sometime.

What you can do:
Use xine to view and control vdr.
Maybe use tvtime to view and control vdr (but I can't get tvtime to
work with dvb?? any pointers??

What you can't do:
vsdrp support has been removed. This really not needed for the two
scenario's above. It would be needed to have freevo control vdr for
things like recordings. But the svdrpylib stuff seems to have died
over the last year or so.

Coolio!

I gave up on it and re-wrote mplayer.py to use the streamdev-server
interface.

This is in my TV section:

('west.bbc1.bbc.co.uk', 'BBC 1', '1',0,3),

Which sends channel 1 to mplayer.py with dvb_box 3 (which doesn't
exist). If mplayer.py finds this it executes

mplayer (normal_freevo_arguemnts) http://vdrserver:3000/CHANNELNUMBER.

I wrote a record script which essentially does the same thing with mencoder.
