Re: Network Questions

2005-02-24 Thread Luis Sequeira
Hello Everyone, I will be staying in a home in Europe for several
weeks, where there is a Mac G3 hooked to a broad band connection. The
owner says that he has no active proxy and it is set up to work only
with his computer. He believes that he has a static connection, but is
not sure. He is not opposed to trying a router, or a wireless router,
to share the connection, but he doubts it will work with my PB G4. I
was also thinking that a switch and an Airport Express might work to
keep his Mac connected, and allow my AP Extreme PowerBook to connect
wirelessly. It would seem to me that it would have to work, but surely
some one out there can tell me with a bit more certainty. Any
suggestions?
Additionally, I am using a Belkin 54g WiFi router in my office.
Belkin claims that my 2.4 GHz is interfering with the wireless
connection. Are there wireless routers that are less susceptible to
this type of interference?
Any help appreciated.

It basically depends on what kind of modem is being used.
In some places, like in my country (Portugal) and other countries in
Europe, many adsl providers offer packages that include a modem with
USB connection (stupid though that is, of course).
If that is the case, the simplest option is to share the connection
(assuming the G3 is running Mac OS X) through ethernet. I suppose an
Airport Express might be connected directly to the G3 so that you can
connect wirelessly.
If the broadband connection uses an ethernet modem, then you may need
a router. Some modems may also act as routers (even if they have only
one ethernet port), so in that case a switch could be enough, mas I
wouldn't count on that.

Re: Network Questions

2005-02-24 Thread Luis Sequeira
From my experience, i don't think there is a need for such convolute scheme.
Most people, if they need to change the computer
that connects to a cable or dsl modem, just have
to turn the modem off so it can accept a
connection from a machine with a different MAC
address.

And changing the modem itself is no big deal at
all. Just put the new modem (say, if you decide
to replace an adsl usb modem with a wifi
modem/router), configure and go.

Luís Sequeira
The only option for you is to get router that enables you to change MAC
address. Most European operators register one MAC address for a location and
do not allow any other machines to connect/share the connection. If your
friend has Ethernet cable connected to the computer there is some hope.
The way to do change his setup is as follows:
1. When his Mac G3 is up open Terminal and run the ifconfig command. Then
note the MAC address of his connection (it is the long hex number next to
the word 'ether' for his network card - the one that has IP address - e.g.
has IP address next to the word inet).
2. Setup the router / wireless hub - in the setup of the WS hub change the
MAC address for the external interface to the MAC address you recorded in
step 1. Do not plug the network to the hub just yet.
3. Take the network cable from his Mac and plug it into the router, connect
other PCs to the network and everything should go fine.
Not sure if Belkin supports the custom MAC address, but keep in mind that
the crazy Europeans (I'm one of them) have different power source than US
(e.g. 220V/50Hz). Good luck.

I would suggest to disassemble the display as this procedure is not
difficult on the 190/5300/3400/3500 (they are more or less the same
thing).

The cable may be broken or simply the connector.
Welcome to the club! When you get a similar Mac for free you end up
with a bunch of stuff from e-bay.

Imagine that you find a dead 3400/3500 on the e-bay and so you can
fix the Kanga. Then you discover that the dead Kanga is actually okay
so you spend other nights to look for the stuff to fix this one... it
is a never ending story.

This is why I complained for the bad design of the Aliminium which
cannot be taken apart more than, say 4-5 times!

It took a long time to find someone to fix it since the printerman at

Re: Not a PowerBook after all...?

2005-02-24 Thread Dyna
On Feb 23, 2005, at 11:41 PM, Dyna wrote:
Perhaps I should clarify that I'm largely comparing hardware here-
So was he.
OK, so let's compare hardware... I work for America's 3rd
largest employer, the Postal Service. They've been sucked into the
Micro$oft vortex and the official laptop and desktop OS is Windoze,
while the official handheld OS is WinCe. Fortunately the serious
computing like reading addresses is done with Linux. Almost all the
handheld devices we use died a rapid death, there are a few laptops,
and desktops everywhere. The laptops and desktops are supplied by
HP/Compaq along with a very profitable service contract. Most of
these PCs are assigned to supervisors some of whom have so loaded
their hard drives with porn that they can barely do real work. We
even have a supervicor who has brought his game input devices to work
and plugged them in.

The demands on this computing machinery are pretty low-
word processing, e-mail, and accessing a web based truck tracking
system. The desktops are too new to justify replacing, so probably
the best solution for those users would be switching to Linux OS and
bringing the tech support in house. One of the advantages of Linux is
the ability to set up the porn surfers and game nuts displays for
text only...

Ultimately these PCs will need replacing and for the desktops
the Mac Mini looks attractive. However, it's reliability is still an
unknown and it costs twice as much as a PC running Linux. There is
however potential for expanding the mobile computing into the trucks.
However, given management's view that drivers are too stupid to
operate a computer and would abuse them if they could, this is not
likely to happen anytime soon. Basicly management sees computers as a
control device and a spy in the cab rather than an enabling device
for drivers.

Thusly the only computers in the truck are unauthorized, like
mine. For 3 years I shagged my Pismo to work and it was a wonderful
tool, making Postal manuals, union contracts, etc. instantly
available in the cab. Unfortunately management was jealous of the
Mac's abilities and scared of the potential of a computer enabled
employee. In fact, they became so paranoid that they seemed to be
looking for justification to subpeona my hard drive.

That Pismo is now so unreliable that I don't bring it to work
anyway. Now if Apple's premium laptop only lasted 3 years in the
truck 40 hours a week when I babied it, how long will an iBook last
living in a truck 168 hours a week with sometimes indifferent users?
Maybe a year at best I suspect that after the first round of
repairs Apple would label the mass failures abuse and refuse to
repair them even under AppleCare. Our techs would then be overwhelmed
by stacks of dead Mac laptops, waiting forever for overpriced
proprietary parts from Apple. I doubt there would be a repeat order...

Clearly my employer would need something like a Panasonic
ToughBook for their trucks, and even after Windoze was evicted and
replaced with Linux it would be far more reliable than any current
Mac portable and thusly have a lower lifetime cost. I found an even
more elegant solution, a Sharp Zaurus 6000 handheld running Linux OS.
It has built in Wi-Fi, does basic word processing, is hardened to
the point it is rated for a 1 meter drop, has no hard drive to
subpeona, and because it fits in my pocket management doesn't know it
exists anyway.

None the less, there is still a small market for Apple at one
of the world's largest computer buyers- one of our most disliked
middle managers has used his discretionary purchasing authority to
decorate his top floor corner office with 3 G4 towers and giant LCD
displays. He does nothing with them that I can't do on my handheld,
and is giving Apple a bad rep amongst his subordinates, who now see
Apple as the big bad boss's toy...

holding a tiny Linux light in the pitch darkness of Windoze,
Dyna

Re: Not a PowerBook after all...?

2005-02-24 Thread Larry le Mac
From: Marcin Wichary [EMAIL PROTECTED]

People buy Macs for a single reason - it is the tool that works for them.
And you know that because you asked every one of them?
Personally, there were many reasons why I bought my first Mac, and the one
you mentioned wasn't among them.
I am one of the unfortunate people than cannot buy a computer,
settle with that and use it for say three years, I am plaigued with a
need to buy something else, at least once a month, and I regularly
look at buying a PC for various reasons; games, my wifes studies etc.
but I always come back to a Mac, because:
1. They always work better, smoother, MUCH less admin
2. Pride! Pride to be differemt, pride to have something that
looks better, pride to have something that works better.
When I moved back to Sweden from England five years ago and
took the job to establish a documentation role in a machine tool
manufacturer I was faced with the decision whether to go with the
PC they provided me with (which I hated) or to go it alone and
get a Mac (IT support knew nothing about Mac).
I spoke to Steve Wozniak and we discussed the issue. He came
with an answer, not THE answer but enough for me tyo make my
mind up and something which will stay with me for as long as
Apple's products provide a viable solution;
It's a bit like religion, if you believe in something you sometimes
have to sacrifice things to go with what you believe in
and for me, first and foremost I use a Mac because I WANT TO.
Price and feature comparisons don't come into it.

Working in the industry I have to say I agree with Larry's assessment of why
people use Mac. I think that's why we published the Mac Bible. :)

First it's 'subpoena', and if your employer is doing that to your
laptop, you've got more problems than whether you're using Windows,
Linux or Mac OS.

Second, it's a vast leap from speccing a ruggedized system designed for
vehicular use to saying 'PCs are always cheaper than Apples', which is
your statement that people are taking issue with.

Your entire post was irrelevant to the point that if you compare
available laptops, feature for feature you will find that, in fact,
Macs ARE largely the same cost as PC's.

Welcome to the club! When you get a similar Mac for free you end up
with a bunch of stuff from e-bay.

Imagine that you find a dead 3400/3500 on the e-bay and so you can
fix the Kanga. Then you discover that the dead Kanga is actually
okay so you spend other nights to look for the stuff to fix this
one... it is a never ending story.
Or you buy a 3400 cheap and then spend more than that to buy the
drive sled and cable. The one I bought was from a lot that had been
scrapped by some company who removed the harddrive (and sled and
cable) to protect the data.

Exactly! You can have the best components in the world, but if they are
used in a poorly designed unit, it all amounts to a pile of expensive
parts which is probably not worth the asking price. With a good design,
you wind up with a whole which is actually worth more than the sum of
it's parts.
And speaking of being not worth the asking price, has anybody seen this
yet?:

Dirty deeds on dirt-cheap Dells?
Dell has been systematically deceiving its customers by advertising
low-priced computers that aren't actually available for purchase and
changing its financing packages for the worse without notifying
customers. That's according to a California law firm that's filed a
class-action lawsuit against the PC giant, accusing it of bait and
switch, false advertising, and fraud.

Yes, but when that processor is going to have to spend a lot of time
dealing with spyware and virii, it's going to be much less efficient
than in some lab.

As for build quality, many Macs are now built by the same

Have you ever worked in manufacturing? Have any experience at all with
contract work? suppliers? design?

In software Macs are clearly far superior to Micro$oft's attempts,
but Linux is reasonably user friendly

and will meet most peoples needs. Given the bugs in OSX, I sometimes
wonder why I pay good money for upgrades when I could be having just
as much fun tearing my hair out at 3 am trying to make it work
running Linux for free...
That's hilarious. Linux is still a playground for people who have more
time than money. I like that even your own words indicate that you
would be assured of tearing your hair out, but it would be free.

So how much cost premium is a Mac worth? For the user on a tight
budget with basic needs an old PC running Linux will do the job for
less than the cost of a Mac.
Correction: For the user on a tight budget with plenty of copious free
time and a very high comfort level with computers and a willingness to
dig under the hood of their computers.

For me I figure a 20% premium over PCs is the most I'll pay extra for
a Mac. For some, a Mac is a status symbol like a luxury car and they
will pay any amount to obtain one...
I've had my Mac for almost a year, and it has paid for itself in the
time that I have spent using it rather than fixing it.

Re: Not a PowerBook after all...?

2005-02-24 Thread Dyna
If you compare a VW and a Mercedes you will see tires, a steering
wheel, seats... does that make them equal?
Which VW and Daimler-Chrysler products are you comparing- VW
makes cars from the low priced subcompacts up to the Phaeton,
Touraeg/Cayanne, Audi, and Bentley and light and medium trucks.
Daimler Chrysler competes with VW in every market segment from the A
class subcompacts and Neon through several SUVs wearing Dodge, Jeep,
and Mercedes badging as well as the traditional Mercedes and Chrysler
midrange and luxury cars. Daimler-Chrysler also produces Setra buses,
Freightliner, Sterling, and Western Star trucks, Detroit Diesel
engines, and owns half of MTM industrial engines. So just what
Mercedes and VW were you comparing?

Yes, but when that processor is going to have to spend a lot of time
dealing with spyware and virii, it's going to be much less efficient
than in some lab.
And if that processor is running under Linux it will have no
more problems with such vermin that a Mac running OSX.

That's hilarious. Linux is still a playground for people who have
more time than money. I like that even your own words indicate that
you would be assured of tearing your hair out, but it would be free.
That was partly true 5 years ago. In 1998 I installed Redhat
5.2 on a Mitsubushi AMiTY mini laptop and it was a challenge. A
couple months back I installed Suse on a couple year old PC for a
friend and it was much easier, taking less than an hour.

Correction: For the user on a tight budget with plenty of copious
free time and a very high comfort level with computers and a
willingness to dig under the hood of their computers.
Again, having done a Linux installation recently I know
otherwise. Getting complex applications like a screen reader for a
blind user can entail some work, but that's an application Apple
doesn't offer at any price.

I've had my Mac for almost a year, and it has paid for itself in the
time that I have spent using it rather than fixing it.
That was true of my first Mac, the 333 mhz iMac I'm typing
this on. Since then I've probably spent more time trying to make my
Pismo work than it took to get Linux running.

Your average user is a complete myth.
Not entirely- in any mass market product like computers the
majority will make similar uses of them. In the case of computers
these uses tend to be stuff like web surfing, e-mail, etc. For those
purposes any Mac or Linux running PC will do the job. But for some
users that do stuff like video production, etc. the fastest Mac
available is entirely justified. My loathed manager at work would be
better off with just one terminal so he would be less distracted from
doing his job.

problem mounting CDs

2005-02-24 Thread John Roberts
I have a Titanium Mercury (G4/400MHz). I'm now on my third CD/DVD
drive. The first one stopped mounting discs after a year or so, the
second one another year or two. I just bought and installed a
refurbished one a couple of weeks ago and almost immediately started
having trouble mounting discs.

The same thing always happens. I insert the CD, it gets sucked in, it
spins for a second or two, then stops. Then nothing happens. There
doesn't seem to be any way to tell OSX that there's a disc in there. I
then restart and try again.

I have an external firewire CDRW that has no problems. I'm wondering if
the problem isn't with the drives but with the Powerbook itself.
