about the Sony CRX820E?

Works great. And most (if not all) CRX820E's come set as Master,
which makes it perfect for the Pismo.

It is the UJ/UJDA-8xx (where xx is 10, 20, 30, etcetera, but *not* 45)

Don't know about what's been discontinued or not, but the drives are
easy to find on ebay. The important thing, as I mentioned, is to get
a TRAY-loading model. The UJ-845 is a slot-loader, which does work
fine in the Pismo, but obviously you can't use the original bezel
At least, not without cutting a slot in it! Though it should be noted
further that some online stores (MCE, Wegener Media, etc.) do sell
slot-loading drives for the Pismo with a Pismo bezel on them.
Probably custom-made, custom-cut solutions.

The Sims on WSII

2005-09-02 Thread Mike K
I installed the Sims on OS9.2.2 (the original Sims) and I'm trying to play
it. It starts up, asks for a resolution, I click play and immediately get
"Error code = 17". I installed the latest update, restarted, tried 1024x768
and 800x600, etc. Anyone gotten "The Sims" to run on OS9.2.2 before? It
installs fine so it must be compatible. Thanks!

Re: Hard drive for Pismo

2005-09-02 Thread PeterH5322

>I just purchased and installed an 80Gb Travelstar from Newegg.com for a
>total price of $112 including shippi;ng.

Lombard and Pismo machines have issues with their EIDE/UATA controller
chips which mandate that the attached drives be fully able to negotiate
down from ATA-6.

The Samsungs, some Toshibas and perhaps the new Hitachi/IBMs will not
properly negotiate.

Certain old Toshibas (up to about 10 GB) and the 5K80 series of
Hitachi/IBMs will properly negotiate.

There are better deals on Hitachi/IBMs than Newegg.com (I have bought
several Samsungs for my Wallstreets from them, and one 5K80 Hitachi/IBM
from them, too).

BestBuyPC, for example, *may* substitute a later series for the 5K80, at
their whim.

Two orders placed with BestBuyPC a few days apart resulted in the first
one being a newer Hitachi/IBM, as a substitute *without notice*, and
defective to boot, and the second one being a 5K80.

The "sweet spot" on 2.5" drives is at 60 GB right now, and those wanting
less than 60 GB, or more than 60 GB, may be paying a premium price per GB
for their drives.

I have actually encountered situations where a 20 GB drive cost more than
a 30 GB drive from the same drive series and from the same retail seller.

Newegg.com is good in that their shipping in certain select items is very
low priced.

The same is true of BestBuyPC.

Incidentally, BestBuyPC is one source of replacement optical drives for
Lombards and Pismos (and for the MCE optical drive bays for the
Wallstreets). There are others. Depending upon availability, $105 could
get you a +/-, read/write/rewrite, CD/DVD drive with two-layer support.
Alas, the laptop's EIDE/UATA controller chips seem not to be up to the
job of successfully burning DVDs on a consistent basis.

Re: scrubbing my oldhard drive

2005-09-02 Thread Robert Eye
OS 9 has the ability to write zeros to the disk. Doing
this several times would be sufficient for most cases
of transferring ownership of a computer (or individual
HD) to a new user.

I believe there is an option on Norton Utilities for
pre-X systems that does a secure erasure.

For *all* cases, incineration of the HD is the best
option. :-)

Perhaps the BBB might be of assistance.

Perhaps the BBB in combination with the manager of your local Apple

I've had a Kensington cable for 4 years and have had no problems (I
don't know that anyone has ever tried to tamper with it). It has a

I don't know whether the cable lock has the same vulnerability.

Bear in mind that laptaps are frequently stolen from vehicles. It's

When my original pismo CD/DVD drive died, we replaced it with the Sony
CRX820E. There are instructions to do this on the web, but I can't
remember where. You'll need to keep your original tray, and install the
Sony onto it, this was tricky, IIRC the hassle was more removing the
old drive from the tray. We weren't able to put the Pismo faceplate on
it, although theoretically it can be done. It works fine, and I have a
CD burner onboard for the price of a replacement read only drive.

I've replaced both with up-to-date writeable and rewriteable

good success, except for cosmetics.

One way to solve that would be to make an RTV mold of the Apple bezel,
and then graft a cast piece onto the replacement drive's door.

There's enough room to do this as the replacement drive sits slightly
inside the Lombard/Pismo case.

Many Matshita tray-loading DVD-R burners from the UJ-810/811/etc.
series can use the original Matshita bezel from the DVD read only
drive. Both have 3 small screws and 2 line up perfetcly; you can
either leave the 3rd screw out (the tray still works fine) or, as
some people have done, drill a 3rd hold in the plastic (far away from
the mechanism, so not TOO risky) that lines up with the 3rd screw.
I've done this on a Pismo with a UJ-810 and a UJ-811, and it looks
great.
