Sonnet Aria on Lombard 400/10.2.8

2005-12-30 Thread Caleb Cupples

Hi,
I'm looking at getting a wireless card in my Lombard, but I was
wondering if anyone has used a Sonnet Aria. I'm going to get the rest
of the network this weekend and get the laptop wireless sometime next
week, when I get my battery. :-)

I've worked with an iBook 600 and a later model and both worked fine
with 10.2.8. Are you sure about the 10.2.7 version. I thought that
was a short lived version (an "oops").

It's possible it's something else. You might try resetting Open
Firmware. There are certainly things in OF that affect video.

Only thing I can toss in is that I use a iBook G3/600 under 10.2.8
and have no video problem. You may need to do an Archive and
Install then the upgrade. It's possible something got corrupted in
10.2 which didn't have any effect until the 10.2.8 upgrade.

It sounds a little bit like something has been corrupted in your OS X
installation. If it is possible and if the OS X installation is on its own
partition, I would format that partition and reinstall.

Many will work but I'd suggest getting an 802.11g card with the

Recent problems with Help Viewer (10.2.8)

2004-07-10 Thread James Rohde
I had been using Help Viewer fine until about a week or so ago, when I
found that when I tried to start Help Viewer (at first, from within an
app to see its docs), Help Viewer would appear to start up but then
'unexpectedly quit'... The window for Help Viewer would get about where
the barber shop pole (striped progress bar) was going, and
'Retrieving...' would appear, but then it just quits.

I've tried searching Apple's Knowledge Base, but no luck there. I've
found apparently 1 or 2 others in the Discussion forums had the same
trouble under Jaguar, but their suggestions didn't help (trash the
Preference file - com.apple.helpviewer.plist). With some further testing,
BTW, I found that Help Viewer won't start up under *anything* - under
Finder, under other apps, nada(!).

Has anyone else run across this problem, and if so, how'd you solve it?

TIA,

Jim Rohde

Can OS X 10.2.8 force ext. VGA without hardware [pismo] ?

2004-05-24 Thread Peter Stein
I know the subject line may have most of it wrapped up but I am hoping someone can
help me find a way to control the external VGA from terminal or an applescript or even
a preference panel?

I KNOW that there is the system preferences display control that works nicely. I just
can't get it to 'sense' a certain monitor and I know it works because I've had it
working times before - I'm just trying to eliminate all the hassle. The VGA port is
working nicely - it isn't broken and picks up the firmware data and supported modes
from other computer monitors.

The monitor: A gorgeous 33" Mitsubishi professional RGB/NTSC monitor. It has BNC, TTL,
and 2 composite video. Yeah, ok, it is 10 years old and I got it at rock bottom
surplus price, but it still is a superb VGA image on that huge screen. I hook my Pismo
500 up to the 33" with a top quality VGA to 5-BNC cable and I have been able to have
it detect the display and show a long list of generic vga and SVGA modes with various
refresh rates. I know this monitor only supports VGA i.e. 640x480 60hz - point being
is that when I have been able to get the Monitor recognized, - it works. Most of time
it seems I have to give up - it ain't gonna find it. I can use a crappy old 14" SVGA
monitor to get the vga port active, then swap the VGA cables with the 33" but this is
the crudest solution I can think of and hope for something better.

The goal: Software activation of the VGA port without requiring any external hardware
or cabling in Mac OS X 10.2.8 on a Pismo 500, 1 gig ram, stock 20gb HD, CDRW-DVD. I
want to be able to turn the VGA port on and set the resolution to 640x480 @ 60hz with
one click or two of the mouse. Possible?

Thanks to all G-Bookers,

stein

Re: Clamshell iBook and 10.2.8? : UPDATE

2003-10-09 Thread Andrew Kershaw
So, I merely tapped the back of the display and the picture
returned. Any clues?
That sounds like a loose LCD cable. You could try taking it apart
and securing the connection, but these cables are extremely fragile.
If it's not the connector that's loose, you probably have a slight
(microscopic, even) crack or break in your cable that will positively
get worse if you try to "fix" it

Peace,
Drew

Clamshell iBook and 10.2.8? : UPDATE

2003-10-09 Thread Kyle Lee
Believe it or not. I booted the iBook and let it finish the boot
sequence. I could tell it was finished because the CD in the tray spun
up and I heard it mount. I then adjusted the brightness of the monitor
using the keys on the keyboard. The screen would go totally black and
extremely white, still no picture. So, I merely tapped the back of the
display and the picture returned. Any clues? I have taken many iBooks
apart completely but never the LCD.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Clamshell iBook and 10.2.8?

2003-10-09 Thread Kyle Lee
Hello all,

This Blueberry iBook was running 10.2.8, the original release, sinc the
original installation. It went to sleep tonight about an hour ago. Now
it will not boot from the HD, the Jaguar Disk or OS9.1 Disk. The screen
lights up at boot, the HD spins, the CD constantly spins up then down
over and over. If I press the start button and let go after letting the
computer sit running for a moment, I hear the familiar tone that you
would get under normal boot, the one you get when the dialog box
appears asking if you really want to shut down. If I hit enter/return,
as if to say OK, it shuts down. Any clues on how to get around this? I
have attempted booting with the option key down,

Thanks

Kyle

Re: 10.2.8

I was an early adopter of 10.2.8 and have not suffered any effects on my

battery life has not diminished or increased after the upgrade, it has
remained the same. I do not have a temperature control, but the ibook feels
the same temp (which is hot).

Re: 10.2.8

2003-10-04 Thread Shane Wolfe
My iBook's battery meter reading averaged about 3.5 hours, full LCD
brightness, Airport Card, etc. It is the newest iBook with a 60 Gb
hdd, 384 Mb of RAM, and the 900 MHz PPC750.

With 10.2.8, I've seen little change in battery life. I've gained
between 10 and 20 minutes from the full charge right after the
installation.

Re: 10.2.8

2003-10-03 Thread Steve Fuller
I installed the original 10.2.8 update. My battery meter went from 3 -
3.5 hours down to around 2.5. After today's 10.2.8 update (580K or
so), the meter reads between 3.45 and 4.25 hours. This was done with
the screen and everything at the same level, and with the Energy Saver
settings at the same level on my 17" PowerBook. I'm going to give it
an actual timed test tomorrow and see where things are at.
Quick report since I didn't feel like going to bed early. Powerbook
17", LCD set to lowest setting that's lit, processor on reduced
performance, Airport on and being used. Unplugged, the battery meter
oscillated someand then settled in around 4 hours. It's been about 2
hours and 20 minutes and my meter says I have 1 hour and 43 minutes
remaining (41%). This is slightly better than I was getting before Rev
1 of the 10.2.8 update. I'm quite happy with the battery life now.

Re: Mac OS X 10.2.8 update pulled

2003-09-23 Thread Krevnik
Wow... I only remember Apple pulling a software update once so far,
when iTunes 3 ruined users with multiple HDs or partitions. They must
have raised the bar a little on their QA department... Anyways, I would
be happy to see a patched update released in the near future. A couple
apps are causing reproducible crashes (thank goodness I enabled
journaling) for me right now... but everything is speedy enough (on a
clean install) that I am not going to bother downgrading. I will just
patch when the proper update is released.

Re: Mac OS X 10.2.8 update

2003-09-23 Thread Richard Smykla
Antony,

Just sent you a copy of my email to Mike Breeden at xlr8yourmac.com,
just to let you know you're not alone with this hardware/OS combo
video problem. "Color mental" is an excellent description of the
problem, BTW. Hope this gets resolved soon - in the meantime, try a
shutdown followed by a PRAM reset - my system hasn't gone 'mental'
since doing this, so I'm hopeful . . .

Rick

Lombard G3 333MHz
512MB RAM, Orinoco Silver PCMCIA

Apple released in software updates Mac OS X 10.2.8. I downloaded
it last night. Boy does it make a difference.
Yes, made a real difference on my machine : total @#$%ed it!

Machine : Lombard 333, 320Mb Ram, external monitor, USB keyboard & mouse

Install, restart, OK so far. Finder back up - monitor arrangement is
around the wrong way. Revert it. Soon there's all sorts of messages
in the console, the external CRT monitor suddenly receives no signal
and the LCD (built-in) goes colour mental with bands and stripes
everywhere!

Restart, similar problems. I notice there a crash log for OBEX. I
have disabled all my login items and the problem seems to have
vanished.

I'll have to investigate further tomorrow - when I'm feeling brave again!

PS - It killed all my Stickies too!

Cheers, Antony.

Well, it should make a difference on the G3 series of laptops... they
are using the video drivers they have in development for Panther if my
version numbers are accurate. Also compiling with gcc 3.3 probably has
made a difference. Video is now MUCH smoother and creates less overhead
on my Lombard compared to 10.2.4/10.2.6
