Re: [Audyssey] Old Titles Removed
Hi Hayden and all, I think there is more to it than that. For a developer its not so cut and dry. There are other issues to consider besides just throwing it up there and letting people download game x with or without support. For example, it costs us money to purchase extra drive space on a web server, it costs us money for the bandwidth we use, and every download of game x goes right on our bill even if it might be pennies on the dollar. So just because you might want to download the Savage Gambit or some other old game, but you aren't exactly paying the bills either. So its not really up to you what a developer does and does not choose to host on his/her website. I myself have a number of old abandoned games on my website with more being added this weekend. However, let's not forget that is a service I'm doing for the community because I happen to have enough drive space and bandwidth to do it free of charge. If my financial situation changes, have to end up getting a different hosting plan, etc that's going to be the first thing I cut out of my budget. It has nothing to do with weather I should or should not offer these games, but weather I personally can afford to maintain the service without charging you guys for it. Now, imagine let's say bandwidth and drive space was an issue for Damien and you guys started complaining that Self-Destruct, Savage Gambit, and Danger City, weren't available for download. Let's say he offers to host them if you pay him a yearly subscription fee of $10.00 which would go towards buying extra drive space, bandwidth, and any other website upkeep fees. Would you personally go for it, or would you turn around and say its too expensive and not worry about the games? See, that's were the rubber meets the road for me. You are all willing to ask for this kind of service as long as it is free, but if it has to come out of your own wallet then its a different tune. I think it is high time you stop thinking about only what you want, and think about us, the developers, and what we need. See why we might not choose to continue supporting or offering a certain product for download instead of complaining about it as we generally have valid reasons for doing what we do. Cheers! I have also made superbonuses slightly more even, since they seemed to be issuing out quite a vast number of monster super madnesses. Since this will obviously affect scoring I have reset the scoreboards in order to balance it out and give everybody an equal chance. Hi Ken, Yeah, I don't quite get that part either. Even though I'm hosting the DanZ Games, PB Games, etc I don't exactly have a polacy of nobody else can redistribute them. Re: [Audyssey] jim kitchen's nfl football
Hi Kevin, I sometimes get that error too with NFL. The error is caused by a mismatched variable and value. I.E. If you have an integer type variable and pass it a floting point value like 1.5 VB 6 will display that error. However, as I know Jim Kitchen doesn't use explicit type coding, has Option Explicit off, the VB Runtime should do the type conversions automatically, but doesn't appear to in this case. In short it is a bug in the game, and only happens once and a while at least for me. Anyway, this kind of runtime error is hard to track down if you are not type coding your code, and why not using explicit datatyping is bad. were the program properly datatyped with Option Explicit enabled the compiler would have flagged this error when compiling, or at least it should since it would send up a read flag. Hi Thomas, I just don't feel like they are games worth hosting. All I have had since I have retained the rights to these games are complaints and flames and I feel like they are more trouble than they are worth. Re: [Audyssey] Entombed
1: magic never misses. this makes all magical characters necros and mages rather powerful, though remember you need to heal them. 2: remember targiting, it helps a lot. 3: Most things in the game are offensive, ie, they hurt your opponents, thus anything you can do to stop your opponents from doing things to hurt you is invaluable. This includes for instance hiding with thieves or assassins, using spells like chalm or curse, and knocking your opponents down. This also makes bards pretty awsome, as well as a major use for spells like paralize, destract or mistify. the amount of times on the entombed mailing list I've seen people say I can't beat the drake simply because they concentrated on trying to damage it rather than trying to stop it from damaging them is ridiculous. 4: Use characters' turns effectively. In some battles (especially against bosses), it's more valuable to have a member of your party on healing potion and scroll duty, than trying to damage an enemy. Bards or tricksters can't chalm or sleep the drake sinse it's so resistant to magic effects, but when not using abilities like mending song or heal on your own party, have them as a pair of hands to use your consumables. 5: speed matters. There are lots of fights where if your enemies go before you, you'll end up in real trouble and possibly dead. therefore don't be tempted to equip melee characters with large, strong and damaging weapons which are slow. Myself, i try to stick to one handed weapons for this reason. Also, be aware that the more special abilities like flurry or sneak attack you use, the longer the cool down time afterwards. your fighter assassin might do a huge amount of damage with that sneak attack flurry, but afterwards they're going to be a big fat targit for the next few turns, so be careful especially when combining attacks. 6: For anyone using melee weapons or fighting unarmed, assassin is the single best secondary class, simply because of the crytical hits and sneak attack skills. I've just finished a game with a very awsome brawler assassin myself. in fact imho the ultimate melee monster class is halforc monk assassin raising iron skin, combo, unarmed and crytical hit. 7:think about your team and what abilities go well together. the assassinate abilitiy for instance is very powerful indeed, but only when a targit is in a helpless state such as sleeping, and usually it's better to put the targit to sleep on a previous turn. if you've got a druid, bare in mind that once one of your opponents drops lightning is risky sinse it might create a zombi, so you'll need to give them something else to do, eg, make them a necro and ice blast people. if your full on offense, considder a bard or a healer, and remember necro always means a skeletal extra character in the party even if you don't plan on using necromancer abilities. So, always think about what classes may complement each other. One of my best recent parties was a brawler assassin, an adventurer bard, and a healer necro. These are probably the best general tips I can give. If you get stuck specifically on any jobs or wonder what some abilities are, let me know. Btw, apparently Jason would like to rebalance the game, which may or may not make some of this invalid, for instance it'd be rather more fair if magic spells could miss occasionally ;D. Hi Pitermach, Thanks for bringing the pause issue to my attention. I do not seem to have these issues on my end, although it does take about five seconds to accept input after the game is unpaused. Re: [Audyssey] Old Titles Removed
Hi Damien, Yeah, I actually do see your point. It is for that very reason, interesting enough, why I had never put up all of the PB Games, etc. I personally feel something like Snowball War is simply not worth hosting, but I've been asked time and time again to host it for one reason or another so I put it up. However, I have a disclaimer on my website that USA Games does not support those games in any way, shape, or form. If people ask their questions will go unanswered simply because I don't really see any need to keep some games like Snowball War around. If you want it then use it at your own risk. So far no one has really asked for help on any of the games I host so I don't have an issue with hosting them. However, if I was getting flamed, bombarded with questions, etc like you are with the abandoned games then they'd be taken off my website faster than you can say pronto Tonto. One thing you can be assured of I'm not going to cry over Danger City, Self-Destruct, etc because the games certainly are not worth it. Jason, I think it was who ran XL Studios, was not a very skilled programmer to be frank about it. I remember back when we still had the ag-dev wiki and mailing list Jason released the source for a couple of his games as tutorials, and it was terrible. I suppose I'm a bit bias since I was trained professionally, therefore I try to program using professional standards, but all the same I didn't think it was tutorial quality. I felt that for beginners it would teach them some extremely bad habits, and do to Jason's inexperience I could see mistakes he would be passing on to the next generation developer. So I understand exactly why you don't want to simply upgrade the code, and would have to rewrite it from scratch. In fact, the only game on your list of games I might consider updating would be the Savage Gambit. I think if it was rewritten, given some better keyboard asignments, etc it could be a decent game. However, it is pretty difficult to play in its current state. Cheers! Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] jim kitchen's nfl football
Hi Shaun, That's not going to resolve the problem. I've got the latest VB 6 libs, and still get a runtime error 13. I've already explained what causes that error. It is caused by passing a value to a variable when it is the wrong datatype. My guess here is since Jim doesn't use datatyping himself what he did is passed a value to a variable such as an integer like 5, and then later tried to pass an incompatible datatype like a float, double, string, etc to that variable later on and the program blows up. The variable in question currently is asigned an integer value or something like that, and has only reserved enough memory for an integer value, and he tried to reasign it after it was asigned a different datatype and the runtime basically comes back saying Ummm...This ain't legal code dude! Cheers! The amount of emails I have had complaining about the bug in level 1 in Danger City, or the bug in level 10 of Self Destruct, or the bug in this or the bug in that, and when I explained to them calmly that because these games had been transferred to me they turned around and basically told me to forget it, I figured that neither me nor anybody else should be treated that way and held responsible for these bugs without good cause, whether as a host or a developer. I feel that since I am trying to offer good quality products now, if someone was to redistribute, or host, these games with my name attached to them, they would hold me responsible for the bugs, and it would put them off my next titles, if that makes sense. [Audyssey] USA Blackjack
Hi Everyone, Over the last two/three days I have taken a little break from Mysteries of the Ancients to update/revise some of my small cross-platform games such as USA Blackjack. I've successfully converted the code from Python to C++, added some end user feature suggestions, but there is one question I have left before I release this bad boy to the public. Basically, as it stands now USA Blackjack is just a text-based game. I was wondering if you guys want me to do something like what Jim Kitchen did by adding sounds such as shuffling cards, dealing cards, intro music, etc. It would be fairly easy to do using something like FMOD Ex which is Mac, Linux, and Windows compatible. Re: [Audyssey] USA Blackjack
Hi Casey, As BGT uses a scripting language, Angelscript, similar to C/C++ I suppose it is always possible someone can look at my source code and convert it over to BGT if they desired. However, as I'm mainly writing USA Blackjack, for myself to help increase the number of accessible games for the Linux platform I'd have no interest in using a Windows specific language and tool like BGT. My purpose of creating USA Blackjack and a few other open source games is to provide some very common/basic games like Blackjack, Monopoly, Poker, etc for Linux users for myself who don't have a Kitchens Inc or Spoonbill Software for Linux and Mac to provide us with such games. So I'm going to be off and on releasing free games of the Kitchens Inc variety for Windows, Mac, and Linux to help fill that gap over the next coming months in between commercial game releases like MOTA. Obviously, if my soul intent was to target Windows users only I wouldn't need to bother since there is Kitchens Inc, Games for the Blind, Spoonbill Software, etc who have already been there and done that. However, for Mac OS and Linux users it is something that is needed. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] USA Blackjack
Hi, I simply rewrote the game from scratch. Its a small game so it didn't actually take that long to do. I just looked at what I did in Python and used it as a sort of template for the rewrite in C++. Obviously, I didn't just convert the code directly from one to the other. As for being open source the game is still open source. You still will get the source code along with the binary. If you install the Windows version you'll get the Windows version of the source code. If you install the Linux version you'll get the Linux source code as well. I haven't yet started looking for someone to do the Mac port, but I don't think it will be difficult to recompile it on Mac using the Linux source since they are fairly cross-platform compatible. Re: [Audyssey] Old Titles Removed
I'm not a developer, but I think there is a reason why a developer would choose not to allow older programs to be redistributed. As Damien has previously mentioned, these older titles were written in a deprecated language by amateur developers. The code is difficult to read, update, compile and run. I believe there is probably a reputation issue. Developers don't want buggy and useless code floating around the net that they wrote. True, Damien didn't write these games, but by purchasing them, the code is now his responsibility. Another reason I've heard for developers refusing to redistribute abandonware is that, even if they don't support it, people will still contact them expecting help. If Damien did allow the games to be distributed, I have no doubt that someone would download a copy somewhere, encounter a problem, and send Damien an email saying, Game X won't run! Help! Even if he emphasizes in the game documentation that the games are abandonware, we've all seen first-hand that many people in the blind community do not bother reading documentation or other information that's right in front of them. On 4/16/11, The Addictor kenwdow...@neo.rr.com wrote: Hey Tom, While I agree a hundred per cent, I still don't see why he's asking that no one else distribute the games. I have them all, as well as other games like Shell Shock. They are certainly not all that great, but to demand that nobody else distribute them seems a bit odd. I know they're his games, that he purchased them, but I don't see a reason for that. Hi yes please that would make it sound more realistic and make it feel like a real card game. it is kind of like in the game 127 miles or what ever that card game is cald. hth. from Mich. - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward thomasward1...@gmail.com To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Saturday, April 16, 2011 11:25 PM Subject: [Audyssey] USA Blackjack Hi Everyone, Over the last two/three days I have taken a little break from Mysteries of the Ancients to update/revise some of my small cross-platform games such as USA Blackjack. Re: [Audyssey] what is the best usb controler to use with audio games on a pc running windows xp 32 bit?
Hi Mich, My personal recommendation right now is the Logitech F510. That's probably the best USB controller on the market for the $25 to $50 price range. I guess it all depends on how much you are willing to spend. Dark says the X-Arcade sticks are good, but those are in the $120 price range. So I guess we kind of need to know more what you are looking for in terms of buttons, number of sticks, POV hats, price range, etc. On 4/12/11, Mich mi...@eastlink.ca wrote: Hi all. all this talk about game pads and controllers and the like promps me to ask the following. what is the best audio game usb controller or game pad to use with a pc running windows xp 32 bit? Re: [Audyssey] USA Blackjack
HI, That's it, some kind of keys for a volume control of the sounds. Since most have only 1 sound card which cannot be adjusted independently of other sounds. Thus some might not be able to hear the text for whatever reason. But since it cannot be done without a whole lot of work, I totally understand. Thanks for addressing my request. Rich - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward thomasward1...@gmail.com Sent: Saturday, April 16, 2011 10:53 PM Hi Rich, What do you mean by adjust the sounds? I generally balance all that out pretty well before releasing any game. If you are talking about a volume control like page up or page down I wouldn't be able to do that given the fact I'm not using OS specific scan codes for the keys and am handling input via cross-platform ascii key codes. Writing custom keyboard events and scan codes to grab the arrow keys, page up, page down, f1 through f12, etc is a major nightmare. Therefore if we wanted to go that advanced I'd have to rewrite the game to use SDL or something like that instead. Re: [Audyssey] USA Blackjack
Hi Mich, Yeah, I know what you mean. Although, the Windows 7 card games, I.E. the ones that ship with Windows are accessible, I actually prefer the Jim Kitchen games simply for the audio and ambience they provide. Plus it never hurts to have player comments like that sucks or piece of cake whenplaying just for the added bit of realism. thats the point we could put packs more importantly I could use my pro sounds just for myself or whatever.
