[Audyssey] Eamon deluxe demo adventure available
Hi. if you go to http://eamon-guild.blogspot.com/2012/03/eamon-deluxe-50-demo-adventure.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+blogspot%2FVPAjM+%28Eamon+Adventurer%27s+Guild+Online%29 You'll find that the first of the new Eamon deluxe adventures has been released as a demo. This is a short hack through a dungeon fighting off some ogre smugglers (for a full review by yours truly see the above link), and is just meant to show off the system and give you an idea of what Eamon is like. You'll need a 32 bit windows system such as xp for this, sinse the Eamon deluxe is obviously a system written in basic, and thus uses the command window, so won't run on 64 bit machines without using dosbox which is inaccessible to screen readers. Unfortunately, though we've looked at several alternatives over the course of testing, we haven't found a way around this problem as yet. if however you can run it, it's certainly worth a play, and the demo adventure should give some idea about what else is on offer (albeit that it's a fairly simple outing compared to some Eamons). Lots of screen reader compatibility has been added, and it's been tested with hal, Jaws, window eyes and nvda, though you may need a review curser to read the screen. Get the demo adventure at http://eamonag.org/programs/EamonDX/EamonDeluxe01SA_VI_Win32.exe For those who don't know, Eamon was a system of textual rpgs mostly written in the 1980's (though there are still games written in it to this day), for the Apple Ii computers. They were different from standard interactive fiction in that the parza was far simpler and so lead to much less frustrating puzzles, with for instance one command for getting items rather than several, though some Eamon adventures certainly did! have their share of puzzles). The two big differences betwene Eamon and standard interactive fiction systems such as Zcode, are that Eamon features D&D like stats and turn based combat, with experience and weapon wielding, and the fact that you carry on the same character through multiple adventures. Even the treasure you find in your adventuring has a point, sinse after each adventure you sell your loot and return to the main hall of the Eamon guild of Free adventurers, where you can use your money to buy better weapons, armour, spells and stat upgrades for your character, thus making even fairly short dungeon treasure grabbing runs (such as the Demo adventure above), serve something more of a point. I must admit I rather enjoy the system myself, and though some adventures are dire, as indeed is the way with anything with multiple authors, some are truly fantastic, and indeed I'll confess to even quite enjoying the dungeon hacks! :D. Hope people like this one and are looking forward to the full Eamon deluxe release as much as I am.. Beware the Grue! Re: [Audyssey] Eamon deluxe
Yep, I did do that, and for the most part, Eamon works pretty darn well. I have never minded using the jaws cursor. The only little problem I had, and the reason I mentioned pressing alt+enter whenever you didn't hear speech, and the numbers sometimes going straight to other parts of the program, is that at one point, I would type a number, hear no speech, only to find that the screen had changed, and I went round and round in this maddening circle until I discovered what was happening. grin All in all though, with those modifications, and the little quirks, eamon is very usable, at least on this XP machine. I am going through each adventure, since I never played these on the Apple when I was younger. Very fun way to pass the time on a rainy day when work is slow. grin Jeremy - Original Message - From: "dark" To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Friday, December 11, 2009 4:27 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Eamon deluxe Hi jeremy. Only the first menue, the startup menue has numbers and moves in that way. For screen formatting and text sized issues, check the faq, sinse writing the character display to 80 instead of 40 is a good idea. The installation file .edx is a simple zip file. you can extract it using winrar, but then you'll have to go in to the game folder and change some .bas files to point to the new directory. Hello. I'm really sorry, Eamon has been under discussion for a while now on the list, but obviously having just joined you wouldn't have come across it, I should really have thought of that. No, eamon isn't a mud (I don't myself really know much about or play muds, but that's another topic). It's a text adventure and rpg system originally created in the 1980's for Aple computers, with literally hundreds (about 250 I think) of different adventures written for it over the years by many people. Eamon Delux is a pc port which comes with many, possibly all, the adventures. you can read about, and download it at at http://www.eamonag.org/pages/eamondx.htm As I said, I'm well impressed with the game thus far, however there are a few things you need to do to get it to run properly and interact with a dscreen reader ssmoothly: 1: unfortunately, Eamon delux starts of is in a dos style console window, and begins running fullscreen, at which point a screen reader can't interact with the window, so you'll need to press alt enter to get it back to a doss window again. You'll probably have to do this whenever you go back to the main hall or start an adventure, but the rest of the time things will be fine and it doesn't cause trouble as long as you know it's needed (you'll probably have to do this for the initial installing process as well). 2: The main hall, where you buy weapons and spells and from where your character can go on the various adventures, by default runs a graphical, and consequencially inaccessible version. You'll need to go to the utilities menue when you've installed the program (7th option on the main menue), and select the second option there which will use the text version of the main hall. 3: irritatingly, running in a window, some text will be chopped off the screen. Thanks to Steven for letting me know, this is however easily fixable. Open the eamondx.bas file with notepad and change the line: Screen 0width 40 cls colour 4.0 To read width 80 (I suggest just finding the word width with ctrl f and changing it to 80), and all text should appear fine. Then, just have fun! imho Eamon is a really nice mix of combat and interactive fiction style puzles, and has a rather interesting experience system. I also like the fact that you take the save character on multiple adventures and get experience with them in weaponry and such, as well as earning lots of gold. anyway, i hope this helps. Re: [Audyssey] Eamon deluxe great fun!
I haven't been following the list very much lately, so I'm wondering if anyone can give me some tips on installing Eamon deluxe. I hit alt-enter as suggested, and that made it possible for me to read the screen, but how do I choose where I want to install eamon? I see that I can install to the c drive, install to another drive, or quit, but how do I choose the option I want? Any assistance would be appreciated. I've been using the "eamondx.bat" file instead of the "eamon.bat" file. Re: [Audyssey] Eamon Deluxe, Successful On Windows Vista!
Hello dark, The installer does work with the instructions I gave out earlier, and as I said, they worked successfully, however at least on my vista machine, the installer for some reason will not read for my sake. Window-eyes and NVDA will not read it, neither will system access do to the graphic on the screen I think. I wonder if there is a way to "bypass" the screen, and just have it automattically install. -- From: "dark" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Saturday, November 15, 2008 11:31 AM To: "Gamers Discussion list" Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Eamon Deluxe, Successful On Windows Vista! All it does, is it will reset your display settings back to 800 by 600, however you can jump back to the settings you wish by visiting the "control panel." And sadly, this has to be done for any older DOS program that uses the "command.com" service. The only other option besides that one, is using "DosBox" from: http://www.dosbox.com/-- which by the way, I have "never" used. Hope this clears up everything. This is "method 2" of 3 from the article: "Workaround to This System Does Not Support Full Screen Mode in Windows Vista" Find the full article at: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/06/27/workaround-to-this-system-does-not-support-full-screen-mode-in-windows-vista/ My own findings will follow: *Text from article starts here* "The following steps guide you on how to install the Standard VGA Graphics Adapter in Vista. 1. Right-click on the Windows desktop and then choose Personalize from the pop up contextual menu. 2. Click on Display Settings link from the Personalization dialog window. 3. On the Monitor tab of Display Settings window, click on Advanced Settings. button. 4. If you're not already on the Adapter tab, click on Adapter tab to activate it. Then click on the Properties button under the Adapter Type section. Allow UAC permission request. Properties of Video Adapter 5. On the Display Adapter Properties window, click on Driver tab. 6. Click on Update Driver. button. Then select "Browse My Computer for Driver Software" option. Browse for Vista driver 7. Click on "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer" option. Pick from a list of device drivers 8. Select and highlight Standard VGA Graphics Adapter from the list when prompted to select a device driver you want to install for this hardware, then click on Next. Standard VGA Graphics Adapter 9. Windows Vista will install the new standard VGA video driver to replace the original driver for your graphics accelerator. If your monitor goes blank (no signal), wait five minutes, then power down your computer and restart it normally. If your monitor does not go blank, wait while the driver is installed. 10. Click on Close or OK button on all dialog boxes repetitively until you're back to the desktop or your computer restarted. 11. Restart your computer if you're not prompted and have not already done so. Once computer rebooted, you should be able to open programs or command prompt shell in full screen window. You may need to set the resolution again, as everything related to display settings is likely to be reset. If you want to reverse this procedure and install back the video display card's manufacturer driver, follow the same instructions again, but choose the option to let Windows automatically install the appropriate software for your system instead of browsing your computer for driver software. If you unable to do so by clicking on Properties button on Adapter tab, go to Device Manager and directly select Update Driver Software on right click context menu." *text from article ends here* Once I started my vista machine, It "beeped" at me! No worries however... Just power off your machine, then press enter "twice," and you'll get back to your Windows Environment. I'll be sending this info off to the developer of Eamon Deluxe, and will also be adding this info to the "Eamon V I P" web site (still in beta,) and will be working on that for most of the day. Re: [Audyssey] Eamon Deluxe
I got it installed and configured for text mode. But it's so slow . I waited a half hour for it to read the intro screen and it still didn't finish. Is there any way to speed it up? I had better luck with PC eamon. - Original Message - From: "shaun everiss" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Friday, November 14, 2008 11:59 AM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Eamon Deluxe I didn't get anything, I put the install and the edx files in the root run install, then push c then push enter wait. push enter. then go to task manager and end the ntvdm process. [Audyssey] Eamon Deluxe For Vista Users
Hello all: For you folks that run on vista, including myself, here's an article I've found that describes the procceedure: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/06/27/workaround-to-this-system-does-not-support-full-screen-mode-in-windows-vista/ http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/06/27/workaround-to-this-system-does-not-support-full-screen-mode-in-windows-vista/ To be safe on my part, I'm staying the "orinal" ms dos version of the eamon adventures until another vista user can successfully get the deluxe series to work. And yes folks, this of course is a "microsoft problem" obviously. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can make changes or update your subscription via the web, at http://audyssey.org/mailman/listinfo/gamers_audyssey.org.
