Hi Dark, Lol! Now, that is funny. I find it hard to believe anyone would name a clothing store Knockers. That takes the cake. As for your point about being a semi-marxist I completely understand. I remember when I took Political Science in college we had to study Carl Marx and how his ideas influenced the 20th century. I have to say I largely agreed with Carl Marx ideas of a communist ssociety, but unfortunately the way in which the Russians, Chinese, Cubans, etc went about building a communist society was not at all what Carl Marx had invisioned. Still his ideas have managed to work their way into some American polocies as well as into other governments around the world. Plus Carl Marx ideas live on in groups like the Free Software Foundation and other open source communities where they are actively trying to fight back against restrictive copyrights and restrictive licensing. you really should upgrade Hal though. net navigation, great links utilities, a lot more helpful stuff in virtual focus, and much cleaner window handling, java access and much better all round debugging in the latest version. In fact Hal is one of the few pieces of software I upgrade all the time myself. I don't imagine for instance that the smugglers games would play very well with hal v5, though they are fine with Hal 11, or indeed with any version of Hal post 7. Beware the Grue! Scanning wise while I used cissero for a while during my degree, i now am actually at a point in research where it's considderably easier to have a paid research assistant (I get a grant for this), sinse I now need to be able to use library search features (which are utterly inaccessible otherwise), and have someone with enough intelligence so that I can say "I'm looking for information on X, can you flick through this book and see if it's useful?" Interesting points tom, and btw this is why i'm a semi-marxist and believe in more strict controls on corporate enterprise. Needless to say, when I submit my first book for publication, I have every plan to make damb sure it's accessible to as many people as possible. Btw, to lighten the mood a litle, a rather amusing fact my brother told me is that the names and patents registry office in Britain has recieved lots of cryticism, sinse they are unfortunately based in Wales and thus view everything with Welsh accents. for instance, a pub chain apparently wanted to name themselves "A good Ferkin" Unfortunately, I'll let you imagine how this sounds when pronounced in a Welsh accent, so it was denied. then again, they did allow through several more , --- interestingly named patants just because they clearly didn't recognize the term, --- for instance a Women's clothing store titled "knockers" ;D. well one reason although slightly off topic is they buy the cheapest crappyest system possible you can get. it lasted me for a couple years before finally breaking. It would die during and before exams. every 2 weeks I reformatted the system just to keep it going. I think the longest time I had the system running was 6 months. They are also slack and sometimes slow. sometimes they don't communicate well. Case in point I was trying to service my brailler because it was broke and out of use for a bit. I was directed through several offices ending finally in an answerphone. luckily I knew the manufacturer of my unit on a personal basis so I can get out that way but if I didn't then hmmph. Re: [Audyssey] financial colaboration was: a drastic changeisneeded for audio games.
Hi Shaun, That's the way in which most users end up with Jaws. Freedom Scientific has a lot of pull with state agencies and rehab centers for the blind in which they promote only Freedom Scientific products. As a result whenever you show up for a job or something the state agency will only agree to buy Jaws, Openbook, or Magic for your job instead of what the end user wants regardless if you have Hal, Window-Eyes, or something else at home. That is a big reason why I no longer deal with state agencies and their so-called techs because they are bias towards other products out there. well the only reason I have jaws at all was it was funded for me because everyone here that works needs jaws aparently for some stupid crappy reason. myself jaws 6 has been ok for what I have used it for. Would I ever use it as a primary reader? not on your life. Sometimes it gives to much info and it can get buggy though its scripts for various instances work well as well as advanced ms office functionality. I like hal as my reader for primary use. my version is quite crappy and old but it does what I need it to do. right now its been the only reader I can esentually make go away without making it go away fully. Let's not forget Freedom Scientific's frivolous lawsuits against Serotek and then GW Micro, the former over the use of the word Freedom and the latter over a Placemarker. Hi Dark, It is pretty much like anything else in life. When you purchase anything it is yours to use so long as you follow the rules or guidelines the company or companies tell you via their license agreements. It is capitalism at its worst. The concept of copyright law may have started out with the intend to help rotect someones work, to see they got credit for it, but big industry has been able to turn copyright law into a weapon to use against any potential rivals. One of the most rediculous cases of this in living memory is Intel verses AMD. During the 1990's Intel and AMD were locked in a war to design the next generation processor for the PC. At the time the best processor around was the 486, and both Intel and AMD were working independantly on a 586 processor design. As it happens Intel created there 586 processor first and got a pattent for it before AMD. A few months later AMD profected their 586 processor and Intel screamed bloody murder over it, and right away took AMD to court over it. They said that the 586 processor was a patented design and AMD could not create a 586 processor under copyright law, and the 586 trademark was the soul property of Intel Corp. As it turned out the two trashed it out in court and it went all the way up to the U.S. Supreme Court before it got settled. As it turns out since AMD had designed there processor independantly, in that the technical specifications wer different from Intel's design, the two processors were legally two different products. As for the 586 trademark the Supreme Court issued a ruling that a number can not be trademarked by a company or individual. Only a unique name or specially identifying trademark could be trademarked. Soon after the ruling Intel renamed their 586 processor line the Pentium and AMD the K5. While these stupid rivalries over copyrights seam to be happening between the members of the upper class there is a major backlash going on in the lower classes who simply refuse to be aparty to that kind of legalistic abuse of copyright over software and everything else. The GNU Linux software movement is just a case in point of people who believe that software should be freely shared, distributed, and copied so much as long as the author or authors of the software get credit for their contribution to the work. I know of several independant musicians that are now licensing their music, some of it pretty good, under the Creative Commons license as they don't want to be a part of the RIAA and their strong arm appproach to music copyrights. There are plenty of people who are sick and tired of the existing restrictive copyright laws, but big business as usual is trying to stomp them flat in court. One case in particular is Microsoft verses Red Hat. Microsoft claimed that the term window was a trademark, and that the Gnome open source desktop was a copy of Microsoft windows. As it turned out Microsoft lost the case and Red Hat as well as other Linux distributions are still around. However, this only goes to prove the point that big business really doesn't want any kind of serious competition. They will use the copyright laws to try and stomp the competition flat if the courts will let them. What they really want is to have a monopoly which in of itself is illegal in the United States and past presidents like Theodore Roosevelt tried to break up trusts and monopolies in the early 1900's in order to have a more fair free market econemy. We really don't see our government doing that any more because they are getting paid big money by said companies to vote their way. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org.
