I take back all the bad things I said about Hugin..I tried it again, and it created a great panorama from my photos. I blame it all on pilot error the first time through.that's my story and I am sticking to it!;-) Thanks for everyone's great tips and suggestoins! I installed Hugin from the Debian respositories (v 2010.0.0.5045) and out of the box I got the error message about the non-free point calculating module. I then installed another debian package - the new all free c version, and that did not work. I kept getting error 250. So then I tried running panorama-c-sift and panorama-c-complete from the command line and got lots of output and no errors. I then imported the resulting projects into Hugin and clicked on create panorama in the assistant and I got an image that was all distorted and bore little resemblance to my original images. I tried to put the pictures together manually, and I couldn't get the 'quick panorama' button to generate a useable image. Very frustrating. I laughed when I found this article - https://panospace.wordpress.com/2010/09/26/the-quest-is-over/..I guess I will have to wait until next year for cpfind to try it again. [Gimp-user] Questions About Creating Panoramas From Several Images
I followed the instructions for creating a panorama from 4 pictures in the Beginning Gimp book (Apres - AkkanaPeck) and it looks great except I have a dark vertical shadow where two of the images meet. How do I get rid of it? I am working on Linux Debian testing with Gimp 2.6.10. Briefly, this is what I did: 1. Make an new image a little larger than 4 X the width of one picture 2. Add first picture as a layer. 3. Add the second as another layer 4. Overlap image two over image one until they line up. 5. Add layer mask to image 2 6. Add gradient to layer mask - black to white from edge of second image to 3/4 of the way to edge of image 1 7. Repeat as needed for each new image By looking at the image, I would say the vertical band of darkness is the area of the gradient/overlap of the two images. I am a complete novice at this Thanks! Mark P.S. I have also tried Hugin, which I could not get to work, and the gimp panorama plugin, which produce the same problem as above. ___ Gimp-user mailing list Gimp-user@lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU https://lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user

The image size from the bad camera was 5,184 × 3,456 and the thumbnail was 160 X 120. I think this warning is referring to aspect ratio. [Gimp-user] OT - Having Problems Displaying Image Thumbnails
My apologies for this OT post, but I need some help from an "image expert", and I thought the Gimp list might have one or two. When I upload images from a friend's digital camera, a Java web app is not able to create thumbnails (they appear black with the title of the image in the image area). However, clicking on the missing thumbnail renders the full image. When I upload images from a different camera, the same app generates the thumbnail and also renders the full image. Is there a special setting that camera's have to have set to allow thumbnails to be created? Both file types are jpeg. I am not seeing any error messages from the app. I have the same problem with a Python based web app that displays thumbnails of images - all the thumbnails from the one digital camera are not rendered (ie white), but the full image is displayed when I click on the thumb nail. Images from other digital camera's display both thumbnails and full images. The only reason I mention this is that the Python app (obviously) does not use the same image rendering code to generate the thumbnails, so this leads me to believe the problem is with the image itself as opposed to the Java software. I am not an "image expert", but I hope there is someone on the list who might be able to enlighten me as to why some images do not render a thumbnail and what I can do about it. Is there some JPEG setting that prevents an app from generating a thumbnail? Thanks! MathMap 1.3.5 = The MathMap GIMP plug-in is an image processing tool that works on several levels: * Without any prerequisite knowledge about image processing, one can use any of the more than one hundred filters that come bundled with MathMap. * More advanced users can combine filters intuitively in the Composer, a graphical user interface similar to Yahoo Pipes! and the Quartz Composer. * For expert users MathMap provides a simple but very efficient programming language. This is the core of MathMap and the language that almost all MathMap filters are implemented in. MathMap allows the generation of still images and of animations. The MathMap homepage is http://www.complang.tuwien.ac.at/schani/mathmap/ It provides links for downloading MathMap binaries for several Linux distributions and for Windows, as well as the source tarball. UNIX filenames can have pipes, greater-than signs, dollar signs, etc; the only two byte values that aren't allowed in a UNIX filename are zero and '/'. It's only the shell that adds special meaning to those other characters, and the shell is not involved with Gimp's saving of an image. > Once I have Gimp::Image, I would love get the binary data that is the > image and do with it as I please. Well, the binary image data doesn't exist in gimp's memory in that form; it's created by the save handler for the particular file format. The comma isn't the problem; there's nothing special about commas in Scheme strings. Re: [Gimp-user] I don't understand how GIMP treat pasted selection -- something with a floating anchor
The layer you get get when you paste is only temporary, and automatically anchors as soon as you do something layer-related. If you want a pasted image segment to become a new permanent layer, select Layer->New Layer while there's a floating selection. Note that the new layer will still only be as big as the selection you converted. And this behavior is hinted at in various places in the manual (with text like "convert the floating layer to a permanent layer"), but the only place I've seen actual instructions on how to do it is in the glossary entry for floating selection: http://www.linuxtopia.org/online_books/graphics_tools/gimp_user_manual/en/glossary.html#glossary-floatingselection On Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 5:30 PM, Cristian Secară wrote: > I am doing this: > - I open an ordinary .jpg file > - I choose a selection tool (say, rectangle) > - I select some small region > - copy (from menu) > - paste (from menu) > - the pasted selection appears as a "Floating Selection / (Pasted > Layer)" > - I choose the move tool > - I move the pasted layer to my desired location > - I choose a selection tool (say, elipse) > - I try to select some small region on the base layer (the original > image) > - while hovering the mouse over the image, the cursor shows an anchor > - while clicking to make the new selection, the existing layers are > combined into one single layer > > I don't understand what is this. [Gimp-user] Looking for Tutorials to Remove "Hat Shadows" on faces
I am a total beginner with Gimp. I have a digital photograph with what I would call "hat shadow". The two people are wearing hats which cast a dark shadows over their faces. [Gimp-user] Scrolling with the keyboard broken? (2.6.3 on OS X 10.5.6)
I did a cursory search to see if anyone else has this problem; apologies if I'm repeating a known bug. I've just installed 2.6.3 (I was previously running 2.4.x) using the Gimp on OS X prebuilt package. For some reason I can no longer scroll with the arrow keys. I tried resetting keyboard shortcuts; then I tried manually mapping the scroll functions to the arrow keys. Neither step helped. Nothing at all happens when I press the arrow keys. This is really slowing me down when I have to reach for the mouse to pan around a zoomed-in image. Has anyone else seen this behavior, on any platform? Any suggestions? -- Mark J. On Linux/X11/DWM, for example, it does.. precisely nothing. Gnome includes that keybinding you mention, so it will work if you are running Gnome, but not KDE. Also-- does a Mac keyboard even HAVE a PrintScreen key? Google saith: no, it doesn't :) My experience has been completely the opposite. I run KDE on openSuse 10.2 with Gimp v. 2.2.13. Using the Print Screen key, I saved the image as .png, cropped it, saved that, and re-opened in Gimp. Ksnapshot took the screen capture almost immediately. I use Thunderbird, and in replying to this list, it put "gimp-user@lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU" in the "To:" field without including any others in the "CC:" fields. Shawn Willden wrote: Well, if you're a non-gui fool, I'd suggest a non-gui tool. I'd use imagemagick, something like: convert infile.bmp -resize 500x500 -quality 75 outfile.jpg ImageMagick uses the file extension on the output to decide what type of image compression to use, so it will save as a JPEG. The -resize option by default will not stretch your image so the above will resize your image to be at most 500 pixels on each side. Finally the -quality is used by the JPEG compressor and takes a number between 0 and 100. Smaller numbers give you worse images, but 75 is a good tradeoff which gives you good image quality and good compression. You can easily play with the numbers to get larger or smaller image sizes. awesome If you do want to use the GIMP (certainly not a bad choice), you should use Image->Scale Image to shrink the resolution down, then Save As and enter a file name with a .jpg extension. The GIMP will then prompt you for a quality level and if you click the "Show Preview in image window" you can see the effects of dragging it back and forth, and you can also see the file size right undernath the quality slider. even more awesome Have fun, I most certainly did. Uninstalling the Gimp is totally unnecessary just to try to correct a problem which is not really a problem. In Windows Explorer, you can simply click on "Tools" "Folder Options" and then "File Types" to look for the file extensions that you wish to re-associate with a different program. Secondly, even if you do uninstall the Gimp, you will not lose any of your images. Not even the ones you may have created with the Gimp. After all, they are just images, not an integral part of the program software itself. The uninstaller would not know of their existence. [Gimp-user] Problems Editing a Scanned Image
I need some help getting a scanned image into an OpenOffice document without the black speckled background. This is what I did: 1. Cut the signature out of the scanned image and pasted it into a new Gimp document (so it would not be full page but just a small block). 5. Saved the document as a jpg 6. Inserted the jpg into my OpenOffice 2.0 document. 7. Printed the page with the signature on the G95 and the signature has black speckles around it. I tried setting the background to white in the saved signature file (step 5) but I still get the black speckles. They do not show up on the screen. Its a experiment to "enhance" pictures taken for a panorama of populated areas. Any pointers on where to look for a solution? Well...for strcit "subtraction of an image" - the GIMP provides layer modes taht do that. Just open both your images as different layers on teh same gimp image, and change the one on the layer above to "subtract" or "difference" - that will do a subtraction on the RGB pixel value of each pixel. That is not your intended final result. But from the "difference" layer mode you should get everything that is fixed in place (ground + benchs + billboards) in black or near black (with outlines since it is little likely that the images will match exactly at pixel level), with negative or otherwise color distorted sillouetes of the moving objects (e.g. persons + dogs + vehicles) . You can then copy this "silloueted" view with "copy visible" and paste it as another layer. Then yoiu can try different ways of getting this "sillouete layer" to the layer mask of the top image, to trying to let only the parts where people appear transparent. You will need to work a lot to find good combinations of operations to do on the layer masks (you will have to blur + play with curves or levels on them) I think what you desire would be easier with three instead of two photos from the same place - or your sillouete layer will contain data of people on both photos. With three photos you have to further generate a second sillouete layer, and then combine both sillouetes to generate a suitable mask for one of your layers. It will requiere quite some experimenting - and I know this I am writing must be sounding confuse. I just downloaded and compiled gsumi and it has the same issue with reading the pen when not on the tablet as gimp does. Although it is not as bad. As soon as the pen is lifted out of range, it returns to normal until it is used to draw again. So now I'm thinking the problem isn't necessarily directly related to gimp, but maybe something both programs use for pressure sensitivity (like the wacom driver?). Re: [Gimp-user] Graphire3 flakiness in gimp (1.2.5 and 2.0.4)
> > > i think we are having some problems because i dont really understand how > gentoo works. > hehe. Basically, it uses a package tree system (similar to debian I believe). When you tell it to install a package, it downloads the source and specified patches from the gentoo archives and compiles the program. When the maintainers for the specified package in the tree (for instance gimp), deem a package to be properly stable on gentoo, they set it stable. Packages that are not quite deemed stable are masked, but you can easily tell the system to try to install it anyway. This is what I did to go from 2.0.4 to 2.0.6. A package that is in the tree, but not deemed stable enough to even try to install (probably very new or has not been tested yet or depends on something funny) will be hard masked (set to masked in a file). To install these you need to unmask the package in the mask file and then tell it to install. Gimp 2.2.0 is currently hard masked. As I dug around (and tried compiling gimp2 from the stock source), I discovered that gimp 2.2.x require freetype 2.1.7 or greater. The current stable version in gentoo is 2.1.5-r1. 2.1.7 is not in portage. 2.1.9 is masked in portage because of problems with it and Mozilla and Firefox being compiled with older versions. To install 2.1.9, you must first uninstall Mozilla and Firefox. For me, however, they would not recompile afterwards (I'll have to try again later and see if it was just a fluke). So the current state of gimp 2.2.x on gentoo seems to depend on the freetype/Mozilla issue. If you can get freetype to upgrade and Mozilla/Firefox to recompile afterwards (don't want to lose those obviously), you could then try to install gimp 2.2.x and see what happens. > sorry for the lack of understanding of your distribution on my part and > if all this work does not lead to getting your tablet working. on the > other hand, many people do have their tablets working with that gimp you > have and with the current stable gimp, so perhaps the best approach for > you right now is to provide more information. > Yeah. [Gimp-user] Graphire3 flakiness in gimp (1.2.5 and 2.0.4)
I just got a new Graphire3 tablet (yay!) and have been trying to get it to work properly in gimp. It works fine in X normally. And works fine in Windows and in Photoshop Elements in Windows. However, in gimp under linux (I haven't tried in gimp for win), it does some odd things. First, after switching to the pen, it will seemingly lock the input device. The pen will only work within the drawing window (except for movement, it will move wherever). When it does this, my normal mouse cannot do anything other than move the cursor around. After much running around with the cursor in and out of the drawing window, the input is eventually released back to the system and I can switch devices (other end of pen - which will end up with same results, or my normal mouse - which will work normally, I don't use the mouse from the tablet.) or use the current end of pen as a normally (until I start drawing with it again anyhow). Second, after drawing with the pen for a short time, gimp starts reading the motion of the pen when not actually on the tablet as tool input. Basically, where I should be able to lift the pen off the tablet and use it at just a cursor to move or whatever, gimp continues to draw with it as if I was using very light pressure until the pen is out of the tablet's reading range (about 1/2 inch). Needless to say, this is rather annoying. I'm using gimp 1.2.5 and 2.0.4 on gentoo with kernel 2.6.10-gentoo-r4, xorg-x11 6.8.0-r3, and linuxwacom 0.6.6 (including the wacom X driver). I'm fairely novice at this and this is interesting. Is this right "GAP = Gimp Animation Package". Also could briefly describe how to import multiple images into gimp with the _00X.jpg sequential filenames? Lastly how would you apply gap to change a property for all the layers, 1 expample is probably enough to get me started. I would like to use GIMP to tweak astrophotography images. These are usually faint images of DSO (Deep Space Objects). Anyone have links to a tutorial or hints. I'm sure someone has done something with GIMP and astrophotography. Thanks, mark...
Re: [Gimp-user] flat image bg color change
I would use the path tool to trace the outline of the bottle, then change the path to a selection. Then you can float the selection and put the layer on a different background. The path tool takes a bit of practice but I think it will produce the best results in this situation. Tom wrote: Thanks Eric. Here it is. Re: [Gimp-user] script-fu text
Ok, turns out, I need to do both hinting and kerning (the letter spacing was off too). So, some searching found that I need to use plug-in-freetype, which takes care of all of this, and produces *perfect* text for me, at least in interactive mode. I seem unable to specify the font_file correctly to be able to call it in non-interactive mode though. The font file name is actually "wmb_.pfm". I've tried that, with and without the full path ("c:\Windows\fonts\wmb_.pfm"), and I've tried the font name by itself ("Myriad Bold"). I am able to select the font correctly in interactive mode. [Gimp-user] script-fu text
I've got some script's I'm porting over from 1.2 to 2.0. (I'm using the windows version, if it makes a difference.) There have been some changes, but I've gotten the scripts working again. I had to add an alpha channel to my layers so I could raise/lower them, add gimp-edit-fill after gimp-edit-clear because of the alpha layer. I also had to change how I created my text layers, using gimp-text-fontname instead of gimp-text: (tLayer (car (gimp-text myImage -1 0 0 inText -1 TRUE 110 1 "*" "Myriad Roman" "bold" "roman" "normal" "*" "*" "*"))) Changed to: (tLayer (car (gimp-text-fontname myImage -1 0 0 inText -1 TRUE 13 1 "Myriad Bold"))) Calling it is easier (no foundry or anything to remember), and the text is close, but not close enough. I can actually get it right if I disable Hinting in the text tool options if I manually create the image, but there doesn't appear to be any way to control the hinting via script-fu. Is there some way I can set it to disabled globally so it will be disabled in script-fu too? I have to create a *lot* of these images, so help would be much appreciated! -- Mark R. For me, the most important feature of filmgimp/cinepaint is the support for greater than 8 bits per color component (16 bit integer and 32 bit floating point). > The cinepaint developers clearly expressed that they are not > interested in such a merge. Last week I attended a public meeting chaired by the cinepaint project lead. I know very little about the reasons behind the cinepaint/gimp split. [Gimp-user] Paste into mask works manually but not in script
I searched the archives for this, but can't find an answer. I have a script which needs to make a layer mask in the shape of some antialiased text. I've tried many different ways, and now have something that works except for one crucial step. The step works if done manually in the GIMP, but not if done via the script. After the successful part of the script runs, I have the following layers: text layer middle layer background The middle layer is active, and its mask is active. At this point the script has copied the text layer using gimp-edit- copy. If I manually do Edit->Paste in the image window and click the anchor icon in the Layers dialog it does what I want: It copies the antialised text into the middle layer's mask. However, if I try to do the same thing in the script using gimp-edit- paste and gimp-floating-sel-anchor, the text always goes into the middle layer's image (not its mask). It even does this if I do the gimp-edit-paste in the script and the anchor manually. Am I doing something wrong, or is this a bug? I'm using Gimp-Python (pygimp-1.2) for scripting, so a bug could be there or in the GIMP (gimp-1.2.3) itself. Any suggestions welcome. = -- MARK [EMAIL PROTECTED] __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
