Every translation, be it UI, docs, websites, or screenshots, should go
through Damned Lies. This ensures quality and deduplication of work.
Remember that maintainers are not qualified to review the work of hundreds
of translators across tens of languages.

For screenshots specifically, Damned lies is not able to push directly to
the repo, but that doesn’t mean it should be bypassed. Instead, once the
proper process has been followed and the screenshot was approved, a team
coordinator can open the MR on Gitlab (and a message to remind the
maintainers that they are a coordinator, and DL cannot push this, is
welcome so the maintainer doesn’t get confused).

I forgot to notify yesterday, but `po-windows-installer` po files on GIMP
`master` repository will now also contain comments when regenerated.

I implemented this and it's now in gimp-help (both gimp-help-2-10 and
master branches). When you'll update the po files, they should now have the
comments on the 2 strings with % numbers.

I'll do the same on the GIMP repository soon too.

Sure.

* In " No suitable GIMP installations were found. %1 can only be installed
when GIMP %2 is already present.", %1 is replaced by the other localizable
string "GIMP Help", and %2 is the minimum version (which will be
major.minor, i.e. "2.10" for instance).

* In "Select all installs for which you want to install %1", %1 is replaced
by the localized version of "GIMP Help".

Letting us know here or at
https://gitlab.gnome.org/Infrastructure/damned-lies/-/issues is
enough. I added the new files to Damned Lies, and now translators can
get on it. :)

I have a question though, what is hiding under the variables (%1 and
%2)? Adding translator comments explaining those would make it easier
to translate, if it’s technically possible.

New po files in gimp-help repository (and release soonish)

Hi translators!

We added our scripts to create a Windows installer for the manual of GIMP
(project "gimp-help") directly in the repository. We also now have scripts
to extract the installer strings into po files before merging them back.
Therefore the strings for the installer are now localizable from the
`po-windows-installer/` directory (for now only in the `gimp-help-2-10`
branch, we'll port to `master` branch later):

So first a question: what is the process to add these po files to the
Damned Lies system so that it's translatable by GNOME translation teams?

Second, a small pre-announcement that we are planning to make a release of
the manual (`gimp-help-2-10` branch) soonish. It had been more or less
dormant these years but activity really restarted lately (thanks to Jacob,
new co-maintainer of gimp-help) and we want to make at least one more
release of the 2.10 manual; it might not be a perfect release, but better
than never. By the way, we also have a new testing website where changes on
the `gimp-2-10` branch are reflected: http://testing.docs.gimp.org/ (if not
mistaken, it is a daily re-build at midnight UTC)

Once we will have made this release, we will likely move on to work in
priority on the GIMP 3.0 documentation.

In any case, we will make a proper announcement a few weeks before, with a
string freeze of the docs, but I guess it's a good idea to tell you about
it a bit earlier.

Hi,

From Gtk inbuilt docs:

A `GtkRevealer` animates the transition of its child from invisible to 
visible.

`GtkStack` is a container which only shows one of its children at a time.

Help understanding two file chooser strings

I am kindly asking for help understanding and interpreting two English
strings in gtk 3.24
They are part of the GTK file chooser dialogue, if I am not entirely
mistaken.

"Browse Header Revealer"
"Browse Header Stack"


'Browse' is a verb, no doubt.
But what exactly is a header revealer and what is a header stack in the
file chooser dialogue?

I'm the committer. 2 weeks back there was no option of "submit to the repo"
in the menu. We will try to do it from the very beginning today, i.e.
upload the translation and see what options would be available in the menu.
If I'm able to submit it to the repo, all good, if not, i will ask for
further clarifications here as to what my options are in such scenarios.
Also, to kill 2 issues with one stone: I had an error while trying to
submit our Geary translation for Gnome-40 [1], I wrote to the maintainer
(Michael Gratton, m...@vee.net) but got no response. The state of the
translation at the moment is "to commit". What should I do to resolve the
issue? If it's not appropriate to discuss the issue in that thread, I'll
start a new one. TY (:

In help files, please do not mark untranslated images as translated

I am looking at https://l10n.gnome.org/module/release-notes/ and
clicking that link with an icon which looks like two small windows.

Many entries show:
  "Translated, but uses original one"
though the original images contain English strings.
So they are not translated.
Keeping them as fuzzy would be welcome.

Out-of-date GDM help files

Hi there.

GDM's help files are available for translation in Damned Lies.
However, the last documentation update was in version 2.26.0, and GDM
changed a lot in GDM 3. I feel it is a waste of effort translating it.

Does it make sense keeping GDM help files for translation in Damned Lies?

Looking at your team page and your personal activity, I see your started 
contributing less than a week ago. Take into account that coordinators 
are volunteers and cannot always react immediately.
So please, have a bit patience. If Russell doesn't react within a month,

branch the gimp-help module into `origin/gimp-help-2-10` within 2 weeks (so
likely around the June 5/6 weekend):

Documentation and translation for GIMP 2.10 will continue inside this new
branch. The `master` branch will move on to be about future GIMP 3.0 from
this point onward.

As I am guessing it will require some action on Damned Lies website to

The original English string is "Friulian".

$ grep -B 3 Friulian /usr/share/xml/iso-codes/iso_639.xml


If your display language is Friulian, it will be shown as "Furlan" only 
if there is a Friulian translation of the language name. That seems not

That's correct, new language codes should be committed along with the 
respective po files, not independently.


Damned Lies is able to add new help files at the condition the help 
directory contains a LINGUAS file (on the same model as for UI po files).

Could someone help us improving/fixing missing features in Damned Lies, so
we will not need to directly commit into git?

Adding a new language for help files should be directly resolved thought DL
and being able to upload/commit a bunch of translations would ease our work
a lot (think about 20+ PO files to be commited manually...)

We only want some useful tools to do our work, don't want to bother nor
interfere in other's tasks, but we don't have enough tools to do it.

Again, sorry for the mistake, but please hear our requests to improve our
translation tasks.

Michael reverted it. To avoid wasting time, could someone indicate us how
to proceed?

I don't mind to do it again (even adding the PO files in the commit) but I
think that's not the proper way to do things.

Maybe someone could review DL's way to add new languages for help or, at
least, grant team coordinators commit access to be able to solve this
issues without breaking anything (nor depend on other people)

Hello, I think this problem is well known for Documentation translation. If
a language has not been translated, required directory help/language-code
will not be there, and DL can not automatically create it. Then in turn, DL
will not present "submit to repository" on pull down options.

should be able to add your translations (and also reuse the 3.38 PO file in
master to save some time).

It seems that DL it not taking this change and trying to manually update
branches page gives a Timeout.

I guess the issue is due to using the "Inform of submission" action
instead of the "Submit to repository" action. The former is for those
having committed the file by an other mean that DL itself (e.g. by
command line).

However, it may be that DL didn't proposed the action because adding new
translations for modules help without LINGUAS files have to be done "by
hand", as machine-editing Makefiles is too brittle to be automated.

I'm sure someone with GNOME Gitlab commit rights will do the action for
you soon!

Most likely you were not given push permission on this repository, which is

Instead you must create a merge request at:

but when i try to push using git push it is giving error.

Hi Milo,

I would say it is not uncommon to have to wait some weeks before a
coordinator has the time to handle translations. Life makes us sometimes
very busy.
Goran, if at some point you don't have time left for your coordination
task in the longer term, feel free to report the situation so as we are
aware of a possible vacancy of the role.

Please help a translator

Dear coordinators,

please help me to become a „Commiter” for the croatian language, or tell me how 
my translations can get commited. A month ago I’ve tried to commit my GIMP 
translations via GitLab (!83 
<https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/merge_requests/83>), which wasn’t 
possible, so I subscribed at Gnomes translation project. Until now, I’m only a 
croatian „Translator”. 

… during the past months I’ve translated several open source software into 
croatian (Inksape, Scribus, Gramps, Poedit, Gnucash, Gnucash for Andorid, many 
qt-files, wxWidgets, etc.) most of which where in poor state, commiting them 
through github, gitlab, transifex … currently I'm helping out at LibreOffice …

MY PROBLEM:
The croatian commiter of the Gnome translation project isn’t commiting my 
translations. Allthough I’ve asked him two weeks ago about the status, I’m 
getting no answer, and the statuses of the files are still „Translated”. As 
there is no croatian „Reviewer”, nothing is happening with the files.

I’ve translated the complete GIMPs stable package into croatian, as well as 
some other latex files and have sent them to the appropriate GNOME destination 
of the croatian team. Please check: https://l10n.gnome.org/users/milotype/ 
<https://l10n.gnome.org/users/milotype/> and compare the percentages.

The state of my GIMP translations are appr. as follows:
•   97% => gimp
•   96% => gimp-plug-ins
•   100% => gimp-libgimp, gimp-python, gimp-script-fu, gimp-tags, 
gimp-tips, gimp-windows-installer

Most of the missing stuff is „explanatory” – strings which would be 
nice-to-have, but are not essential for the general usage in croatian language.

Other files:
•   100% => gedit-latex - gnome-3-20
•   100% => gedit-plugins - gnome-3-32 (just some corrections)
•   100% => gnome-latex - gnome-3-30
•   100% => gnome-font-viewer - master (just some corrections)


Any help/advice/information is welcome! Thank you. And sorry if this is the 
wrong place to ask for help.

thus marked as 0% translated. We checked if the existing files are
corrupt, but the msgfmt checks are looking good and we can generate the
html-files without problems.

Help needed for user manual translation

Hi,

For localization of GIMP User-Manual we clone gimp user manual repository
into folder on /home/snehalata/SBS/gimp-help-2.
Modified configure.ac file added mr and added files paths in AC_CONFIG_FILES
Then created a new folder named mr in po folder of GIMP repository
We put then all translated .po files into mr folder
We run ./autogen.sh command
We referred the link
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp-help/blob/master/TRANSLATING
Then we are running make html-mr command to see user manual of local
machine in translated form that is in marathi
But we are getting error like this:

Hello Snehalata,
For testing of translation for the User interface I sometimes use the
deckard tool... (but it seems it does not have the GIMP module) or you
could install GIMP on your favorite distro and replace the files .mo
files that are used for localization.
For example on Debian/Ubuntu you could use the command "dpkg -L gimp"
to find out where gimp stores its files, but they usually are stored in
/usr/share/locale/ro/LC_MESSAGES/ (replace "ro" with your own
langcode).

For testing of the User Manual you can compile the new translation into
a new manual as described here:

(Please read the whole "Testing" section and you will find useful tips
on how to test the user interface and documentation.)

In the first case you're using the anonymous git:// protocol, so it didn't
use your account at all. In the second you're using ssh, and your key isn't
recognised.

On https://gitlab.gnome.org/users/sign_in I can only sign in using the

LDAP tab. When I go to Standard I cannot sign in (not with my git.gnome

If this is working, I suggest you push using https. Just use

git clone https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gthumb.git

And when pushing, you'll be asked for your username and password. It may be
annoying that you have to enter your password every time you push, but if
you aren't pushing often, it shouldn't be a problem.

Both commands 'ssh -v myn...@git.gnome.org'

and 'ssh -v myn...@gitlab.gnome.org' give me terminal output Permission

When pushing with ssh, everybody pushes as the git user, you don't need
your username.

"Fingerprint has already been taken" means another account has your
SSH keys. Could you have already created a Standard account and added
SSH keys to it? If yes, logging in as Standard account and removing
your keys from Standard account would solve this issue.

So, yes, there is something wrong, but there may be a hundred reasons 
for this Permission denied. Both commands 'ssh -v myn...@git.gnome.org'

gitlab and in my public key. Changing my user name in my gitlab User

I notice I mentioned "Profile", but the correct is "User Settings". So
the correct instruction is to click in your picture to expand a menu,
select "Settings" (for User Settings) and finally "SSH keys" in the
left sidebar menu.

See the attached picture for how it is for my account -- you should
see the same, I assume.

Ha, here we get to the core. I signed in with ldap name/password on 
gitlab.gnome.org. I opened my profile, so far so good ;) But on

committing gthumb-3-6 ui+help failed

Hello,

Following instructions on [1], I did the following:
1. git clone git://git.gnome.org/gthumb
2. git checkout gthumb-3-6
3. cd gthumb
In gthumb/help I created a new folder /nl after which I copied nl.po 
(the help file) here. I also made some changes to gtumb/po/nl.po
4. After commands add and commit I got stuck when trying to push. The 
message is:

fatal: Could not read from remote repository.

Please make sure you have the correct access rights
and the repository exists.

Before doing all the above, I had signed in in gitlab with my ldap 
username and password.


Have I overlooked something?

FYI: gnome-terminal help pages

Dear Translators,

This is just a friendly heads-up:

gnome-terminal's help pages received lots of changes about a month
ago. The pages were updated against the new merged preferences window,
plus they received many one-off fixes as well.

There are several languages where these pages were 100% translated in
3.26, but are at 72% now. In case you have time, it would be awesome
if you could update them so that they don't regress. These languages
are: ca cs de el es fr hu ko pt_BR sv. Also in quite good shape,
probably worth completing are: fi ru.

Special thanks go out to Piotr Drąg for his continuous effort on
fixing the source strings, and the completeness of the Polish
translation!

Help with the content rating strings in GNOME Software

Genius release coming + help files change

So 1) new release is coming in the next week or so (if I can make the
current infrastructure change work well.)

2) The help files are no longer installed as docbook, and no longer
use the gnome help files infrastructure.  Things are done far more
manually and then I have a script that runs xml2po and xmlto to
generate HTML files for all languages which are then installed (I have
the html files in git so that it's not required for build).  This
makes links (e.g. help on function) actually work again and makes
things work outside of the gnome world.  Plus gnome-common is going
away, so something had to be done.  Anyway, to update a po file, there
is a script in the help dir such that "./update-po.sh LANG" updates
the po file for you.  Anyway, things should be "similar" for
translators.  For translating, if you just update the .po file that
will work I will run the xml2po and xmlto stuff to update the xml and
html.

Help needed with fixing an i18n bug in control-center

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for someone interested in localization who also knows a
bit or two about programming. We have a bug in gnome-control-center
that causes a drop-down menu in the Network panel to be always in
English:

Basically, someone needs to fix patches in
https://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-control-center/tree/panels/network/wireless-security
to apply again. I can’t do it and g-c-c maintainers are
(understandably) too busy.

Hi Peter,

The problem is that Damned-Lies is running on pure static sources, to 
read configurations and to extract strings.


I tried to make the variable reading code a little bit smarter to be 
able to read included variables. Now it still fails as the code returns 
after finding the first occurrence of the variable in the file (which is 
empty).
It's still a bit hackish, but what about inverting the "if 
BUILD_WITH_SPELL_CHECKER" condition in your file?

Not the most useful error. I didn't know how to solve it at first and
could only do it thanks to the help of Shaun on #gnome-hackers

Lacking a way to prevent or detect those errors earlier, can we at
least have a way to understand what's wrong?

I'm not sure what the best way to handle such cases would be, and I'm
not sure either that doing the revert/revert-the-revert dance is a

committing to gimp-help

I would like to commit a number of translations to GIMP help.

Clone and pull from git://git.gnome.org/gimp-help-2 works without
trouble.  However on attempting to push, it says "fatal: Could not
read from remote repository."

I could understand if it cannot *write* to it, but reading was
obviously not a problem just before.

(We are talking about a case which is not supported by damned lies
because the file was previously untranslated.)

Does anyone know if, say, the procedure is different?

It took me a minute to understand what you are referring to.
It is not related to localisation (translation), changing product to baobab.

For reference, this is probably the strings the reporter is talking about:


src/baobab-window.c:_tmp2_ = _ ("Could not scan folder \"%s\" or some
of the folders it contains.");

src/baobab-window.vala:var primary = _("Could not scan
some of the folders contained in \"%s\"").printf
(scanner.directory.get_parse_name ());



Looks to me like nothing is wrong and this is on purpose.
