My dear Goans,

Goa is celebrating the 64th. Goa Revolution Day on 18th. June, 2010  and our 
good wishes goes to each and every Goan  with just a thought to ponder on. 
It took a  rank outsider in  Shri. Ram Manohar Lohia to instilled the spirit 
of REVOLUTION into the bloodstream of Goans in the year 1946, even prior to 
the gaining of Independence for India from the British rule. Thereafter, it 
took 15 years for this revolutionary mind-set of Goans to have India help 
Goa to get rid of the Portuguese because Portugal was contemptuous towards 
handing-over the reins of Goa in the hands of Goans, leave,  to maintain 
friendly relations with Goa and Goans which it has ultimately done through 
the back-door, as it were, after having been humiliated to no extent by the 
invading Indian Armed Forces. The transition of Goa into the hands of Goans 
would be no great deal,  as Goans were handling every aspect of governance 
in this territory, anyway. Besides, this very act would deprive Pandit 
Jawaharlal Nehru of the excuse to march into Goa to resurrect the political 
fortunes of his close friend Shri. Vengalil Krishnan  Krishna Menon, 
especially suffering after the 1948 'Jeeps scandal',  even at the expense of 
a barrage of world criticism and even  having to go against the root 
Non-Aligned stand against 'aggression' and 'non-violence'. Probably this 
inner guilt feeling and a veritable slap in the face from the international 
community hastened his death in 1964 at the age of 75.


49 years down the line, what Goa was promised by him, that Goa will be 
treated as a special case with 'special status' etc.  is yet to be realized. 
In the meantime Goa's demography is being actively sought to be diluted by 
his very own party, the Indian National Congress for vote-bank politics when 
in time "special Status'  for Goa will hold no meaning at all.


1967 saw the tumultuous Goa's 'Opinion Poll' where the sheer determination 
of Goans saved Goa from being merged with the neibouring Maharashtra. In all 
probability, if Mr. Pandit  Jawaharlal Nehru had in his heart any special 
consideration for Goa and Goans, he would have outright denied the demand of 
the  mergerists, leave alone sanctioning of the "Opinion Poll"  where the 
very being of Goa and Goans was threatened and came very close to being 
lost,  if not for the above mentioned sheer determination to survive and 
keep their Goanness very much alive.


The mergerists, having lost their grip on their dear dreams of decimating 
Goa and Goanness, have been, all through the years since 1967, nursing the 
feelings of bringing death to Goa and Goans. This has been evident during 
the 17 long years of misrule  and the beginning of the destruction and 
devastation of  Goa by the erstwhile Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP). 
The same MGP stalwarts resurfaced through  re-incarnation as Congressmen to 
rule Goa ever since, with a brief spell of the equally destructive rule by 
the communal RSS-BJP with the insider help of the mergerists. Luckily, their 
bluff has been called and Goa remains in a vice like grip of the erstwhile 
mergerist masquerading as Congressmen and getting away with it, fooling 
Goans. Their hatred for Goa and Goanness is manifest in the way the Official 
Language Act (1987) has been implemented by inserting "Only Devanagiri" as 
the script for 'Konkani' when the 'script' itself should not have been 
mentioned, giving equal rights to 'Roman' as well as 'Devanagiri' scripts.


That Goans are not happy with the prevalent state of affairs with Goa going 
down by the day with the destruction of its hills and forests, its water 
resources and agricultural fields, its rivers and beautiful God given golden 
beach fronts, with no sanitation to call by its name and garbage flowing 
onto the streets; roads and market places with impunity; with the dilution 
of the Goan demography through illegal promotion of surreptitious 
in-migration  in the name of development; the lack of rule of law where the 
esteemed citizens of this land are left unprotected; corruption at every 
level and political insanity galore. It is very clear that Goans are 
thinking in terms of liberating Goa for the second time, this time to give 
their Goa the much needed and much promised 'Special Status', even at the 
cost of instituting the 2nd Opinion Poll to stop the massive sale of Goa 
through the backdoor.



On this 64th. Goa Revolution Day, let us tell Shri. Ram Manohar Lohia that 
his efforts to liberate Goa from the Portuguese yolk  has been successful to 
the effect that a more deleterious home-grown yolk has been harnessed on the 
backs of Goans today to see that they lose everything dear to them, even to 
the extent of losing their Goa itself.  The agenda being that if Goa was not 
merged into the heartland of Maharashtra, Goa will be taken away from Goan 
by diluting its demography in such a manner that Goa does not remain Goa 
that was,  in a few more years.  Let us t

Our brother VIANNEY (husband of Yulette) expired suddenly in Singapore this
morning (June 16th) shocking all of us. It was God's providence that Mildred
(daughter of Anand/Mila) was there in his last moments in the Hotel room
where they were staying. As the investigation process is on and may take a
day or two, the body will be brought to Mumbai only on Friday night
earliest. We will keep you informed of the details of the funeral.

Vianney was the son of Sabino(& late Irene) and brother of Anand (& Mila),
Anna (& Vally), Sr. Aruna, Gabriel (&Jeanette) , Cecilia (& Venantius) and
late Esther (& late Sunil). He is the father of Olayinka & Alaric.

Kindly keep all our family in prayer and pray for Vianney to merit the
rewards of eternal life.

Sometimes we have to examine the usage of the word 'Eco' with a bit more 
insight.


People may try eating a few traditional things on a coconut shell for 
that function only; after they go back home, they will carry on eating 
on plastic or glass ware regardless. Can't really blame anyone, it is 
just too impractical to use coconut shells for eating.


Also, if everyone ate their meals on banana leaves, a simple maths 
exercise would easily prove this to be an unsustainable practise and 
that there would be no banana trees left in India in no time. And with 
less photosynthesis, I wonder where on earth the bananas would get their 
nutrients


What would make 'Eco' sense would be to recreate the old practises of 
packing food into simple, non plastic packaging. If people would take 
jars/cloth bags to the local shops to get them refilled with grains, 
rice, veggies, etc. then it would make more sense. A step further, once 
could grow own vegetables on back gardens, reuse rain water, compost, 
insulate houses sensibly, use more solar/wind energy and turn kitchen 
bottles upside down for that 'last drop' when they are nearly finished!
Even designed my Porvorim flat so that the breeze alone with just two 
windows open, ventilates the whole area without any need of any fans.


I would call al this a proper usage of the word 'Eco'.

Tiatr Academy Goa (TAG) has organized a meeting of writers/directors of 
tiatr on Sunday, 20th June 2010, at 10:30 am at TAG’s Conference Hall, 
Campal Trade Centre, Campal, Panaji Goa.


TAG has observed that numerous tiatrs staged in recent times are not 
written, directed and staged as per the original format of the tiatr. 
TAG is of the view that the standard of tiatr must be developed, but 
this should not alter the original format which makes tiatr a unique 
form of drama in the country.


Therefore, TAG will explain the writers and directors about the exact 
format of tiatr and the types and nature of songs (kantaram) which also 
form an integral part of tiatr.


The need of having this meeting is to bring the exact nature of tiatr to 
the notice of writers/directors. Those writers and directors who produce 
their tiatr in the correct format only will be permitted to participate 
in the ‘Second Popular Tiatr Festival’ organized by TAG in this 
financial year.

After the Nadia’s incident May 15, there were at atleast 3 more 
Ratol-suicide cases reported.
Latest one being a newly married woman at her mother house Quelossim.
 
The deceased, Minguelina Lucas was married a Margao resident 
last year. She consumed Ratol on the 11th June and died  on  
17th at Hospicio. She was staying with her mother for last 2 months
 
3-4  Ratol cases in less than a month, sounds alarming.
There are other reported  cases of suicide too e.g. by hanging etc  
during the same period

Dr. Nandkumar has done the best thing in taking on all his critics head on. 
There seems to be 2 yardsticks for defining conflict of interests. When real 
estate designers, engineers also appear on social action platforms, it is 
fine. When social activists take sponsorships and scholarships from mining 
barons, politicians, real estate.. it is fine. Exposing them becomes 
slander and against the Goan cause.
Dr. Nandkumar is not God and may have his limitations but that to just 
disregard his contributions to Goan society is not fair. What about the 
environmentalists who recieved the Gerra Awards? Why were they not hauled up 
for conflict of interest? Seems that people who have enjoyed both sides of 
the fence take the moral high ground to condemn others.

After showering me with faint praise, you claim that Narayan Desai is

I am well aware of your personal contribution to the Nylon 6,6 debate in the
goan papers.You characterised those of us who were fighting against Thapar
Dupont and their Goan agents, as Brahmins who wanted to put down
non-brahmins. You did not like the fact that Kashinath Jalmi who was a
leading supporter of this plant and your comrade in arms had lost his
support in my constituency. Environmental degradation and serious
contamination of Zuari from massive inflow of untreated waste from this

that does not mean you can join the same league as Augusto and hurl

Absolutely right Freddy, when will our so called overseas goans learn that 
mingling with alibaba and his thugs is not a matter of honour. I think if 
possible they would have Invited Micky too. And since they are Inviting the 
"EDUCATION SINISTER" they should involve him in some sort of intellectual 
debate to test his ability to speak.

I do understand our people in goa giving importance to these thugs as they 
would require their assistance sometime or the other but why on earth would our 
people settled abroad play up to these guys? Show some solidarity and boycot 
all goans  that tarnish the image of goa and its people

The Bicholim fire personnel were kept on its toes on Wednesday, as incidents
of uprooting of trees were reported in several parts of the taluka.
According to reports, three trees were uprooted at Mayem, two at Chodan, one
each at Pilgao, Advalpal, Karapur-Sanquelim and Mulgao. In most of these
areas, roads were blocked for vehicular traffic.
At Mulgao, a tree fell on electricity pole leading to failure of power
failure in the area. At Lamgao, a compound wall collapsed on the house
belonging to one Balaji Prabhugaonkar.

interesting comment...

cite a second case: our research project that supports research on Micro

Deaths due to Power Dept negligence and the level of  Compensation  paid
 
It appears that Electricity Dept goes by it’s rules which may have 
been framed many years ago.
The level of Compensation it pays i.e. Rs. 2 lakhs for the loss of 
life seems too low or outdated.
It simply does not make sense when young people keep dying due to 
the department’s fault or negligence  and the paltry amount paid 
as compensation. 
 
Deaths due to natural calamity etc , the victims/ next of kin get upto to 
Rs.2 lakhs compensation by the Govt.
Deaths due to Govt. or Electricity Dept’s own fault get the same level 
of compensation?
(I am sure, if this is fought in the court of law,  Dept would be made to 
pay lot more)

It also appears that the Dept just pays  the Std/ fixed amount 
of compensation  and close the book once for all without even 
taking  preventive measures so as to avoid  such deaths in future.
 
No amount of compensation can bring the dead back  but  there 
should be some  moral obligations or ethics to be followed  when it 
comes to payment of compensation  particularly when a death occurs  
due dept’s own negligence etc
 
Looking all around,  I would say the Electricity Dept should raise it 
present level of compensation by at least 2.5 fold i.e. 5 lakhs per death
 
What about compensation from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund ?
I think I remember, CM announced (on retuning back to Goa  early Sept 
last year) some compensation from his (CMRF) to the next of kin of 
Morjim twin deaths in the family.
I somehow even remember CM announcing Rs. 1 lakh each 
(I could be wrong )
But I am told they never got anything from CMRF
However, they did receive the std  paltry compensation from power 
Dept in  about two months time.
 
We have personally visited Mandren yesterday  where 30 years 
old woman died of electrocution.
It took us long tine to get there (we never been Mandrem  before), 
we were almost lost somewhere near Palotti House. 
Eventually we were there using some internal/hilly roads to reach 
Pernem Road, Mandren and then Sawantwaddo.
(hope our efforts bear some fruits)
 
We saw the situation there.
Loose/hanging overhead wires still needs ‘guard loops’ in many areas.
As seen in the pics supplied yesterday – see links below
 
Hoping someone out there (including Chief Electrical Engineer, 
Braganza, see cc) will take up this matter  so as to bring in some 
changes (including revision of compensation levels) and
 improvements thus avoiding future incidents of loss of innocent lives etc.
 
We have a right to live, please don’t take it away from us.

Note:
The newly replaced wires are  passing over the roof  of the house
 (almost touching the roof tiles)  next to the accident spot, to the left of 
the well  (with new roof tiles).
Don’t know how this was allowed/done by the power dept.

“This will be a unique platform to offer young performers an opportunity 
to sing, dance, play live traditional music and also learn cooking Goan 
dishes,” Mario Fernandes, an volunteer said.


It will be fun for young and old alike, with no formal function, 
speeches, chief guest but an event to be held in the open. A number of 
games, including breaking of coconuts, housie with a difference will 
enliven the proceedings.


Wind blown instruments, which are part of our culture are under a threat 
of fading out due to dwindling interest among the younger generation in 
these instruments. But hopes of a revival are bright as some old 
maestros have sacrificed their time and energies in drawing some youth 
to the art. One of the maestros, Joao Carmino Braganza has painstakingly 
trained a few youngsters. Having picked up some skills under his 
tutelage, they will perform at this festival on wind instruments and 
drums. The occasion will serve to launch"THE GOAN YOUTH BRASS BAND" 
formed by the group.


Another highlight of the show will be singing of cantarams by new and 
young singers, who also include a few award-winning singers in tiatro 
competition, assisted by budding young musician, Ashley Fernandes and 
his Amigos.


Earlier on the festival eve on Saturday, a curtain raiser event, 
community kitchen will bring together under the guidance of Mrs.Juliet 
Fernandes ,from the Quitla waddo and her friends to pick up rudiments of 
cooking traditional Goan dishes. In a bid to inculcate a sense of 
importance of old practices and tradition, eco friendly materials, 
healthy foods and other customary facets of our culture will be on 
display."Sanna and Kanji or rice gruel will be served in coconut shells 
and food on banana leaves,” Fernandes said.


Another Volanteer Anselm Fernandes adds that "besides promoting 
community spirit the festival hopes to empower the young and old to 
safeguard our traditions for posterity and invest in our childern so 
future generations may reap the benefits".

I am keenly following the direction and dynamics of the 'mining agent'
discussion. I have seen in 33 years of my active public life how well
settled people suddenly wake up, choose an issue and take a high moral
position. Now an intensity scale is being prescribed for environmental
issues.
I am pleased to inform all the discussants that I would be publishing
as a  booklet ( with Konkani and Marathi translations later) without
editing all the critical comments about me and put them before the
people, including obviously people in mining areas. It would be useful
also after my death ( it may come sooner than any one of you expect,
this is not a joke but take it is a serious statement) as an excellent
peer review of a scientist-activist's life. Please be very liberal in
your criticism. Cyberspace words don't hurt me. In fact, it would help
me to review my own decisions, my own life and considerably improve me
spiritually. Besides such shock treatment also kicks up my literary
spirit.
More critical comments are welcome. Also please dig as much as
possible from my personal life. Get the records from Panaji and
Ribandar/Old Goa police and the JMFC courts about my arrests , time
spent in jail and attending the courts etc. I also wish to  post
details about my assets and liabilities and income and expenditure and
my lavish lifestyle voluntarily as the interesting discussion
proceeds. it would prove my corrupt nature. Any punishment from
cybercourt is acceptable.
We need more critical discussion. Inflate the archives. My four and

 I am also thinking in writing about these comments in vernacular
media so that people come to know about my real face, mistakes, crimes

I would show the most critical comments when delegations from mining
affected areas, farmers, horticulturists seeking advice for public

I would also ask my close colleagues-Rajendra Kerkar and Ramesh Ganwas
whether they approve this interesting inquisition and consult them
about future course of action. I would also discuss this matter with
ex student leader and journalist Mr. sandesh prabhudessai of Prudent
Media (funded by a Mining group, no conflict of interest there?) and
former student leader, engineer and vice president of Goa Bacahao
Abhiyan, Ravindra Bhavan,, Margao and CEO of Fomento's Margao Sonsodo
project (no conflict of interest there?) lyricist Mr. Shridhar Kamat.
I wish to also consult Dr. Bikram Patel of Sangath whether their
collaboration with Dempo mining co. amounts to 'conflict of interests"
and whether Indian NGOs and activists are comfortable with pharma
giant Wellcome Trust's sponsorships.
 I have my own critical assessment of the 'mining agent' debate.
Actually it has little to do with Arundhati Roy related postings. I am
a thorn in the way of many people.  Details of this politics in my
free and frank memoirs
Interestingly, I would have been spared of "mining agent" label  if I
were to be on the same level as Dr. Ligia Noronha. With excellent
local, national and international  contacts/connections , including
those with NGOs and activists and policy makers whatever she does as a
paid job/ employee of TERI  would never be seen as 'conflict of
interests'. As an environmental economist she knows much more and in
detail about legal and illegal mining in Goa. She is definitely in a
position to satisfy the expectations people keep from me.

For those who are unaware-dr. Noronha is also a member of Western
ghats expert panel chaired by Dr. Madhav Gadgil. We met in Bangalore
on March 30 th.

I had mentioned in the Bangalore meeting the pressure brought on me.
My assessment of this environmental politics and its' clandestine
international angle would be sent in a report to MOEF and the Home
ministry.
I would now like to see what improved yardstick is applied to Dr. Noronha.
Although my ideology has been questioned the ideological architect of
mineral foundation of Goa is non other than Dr. Ligia Noronha who was
fellow of TERI. A separate yardstick has been applied to her and her
NGO. The proof is directly from TERI website as below:-
