Hello,

I've just released a new version of PrivatePlayers (P2), my MetaMod plugin
that controls who can play on any Half-Life mod server !

Changes and additions in version 0.40 :
° fixed sometimes bad counting players (sv_timeout workaround for
connections refused by other Metamod plugins)
° fixed multiple MySQL connections when changing maps
° added p2_type 4 : refuse unknown players if there are at least
   (CVar)p2_min known players
° added CVar p2_forcenames, to ensure known players use their known name,
   and protect them (anti-fake)
° added WebMod 0.43 interfacing functions

More information download page :

there are plugins to disable these types of names. Check out clanmod, it
allows wildcards in the illegal names. Wont let a person with a bad name

admin_llama changes their name to llama and won't let thm change it back
unless they disconnect to do it. so adminmod must have functionality to
not allow changing names while connected. while they could disconnect
and change their name anyways, i think it would still be effective.
usually people that change their name do it when they are about to die,
or like arene said when they start to suck. it would make it a pain to
have to disconnect to change the name, and who's to say they wouldn't
start playing well again then hose their attempt. i would put in a
request in the adminmod sript forum.

Re: [hlds_linux] weapon restriction

2002-09-25 Thread Ryan McCullough

I coudnt have said it better. I too used to be an AWP-Hater calling people
who used it awp whores as the term goes. Then I started playing with it,
and learned to play with the weapon and grew to love it. I know at least 10
other people who were in the same boat as me. Hated the weapon until they
learned to use it. You know what I hated most about the awp? Getting killed
by it and not being able to kill the other guy even when I bought one. I
think this is why most people dislike the awp. I will tell you, some maps
just are not the same without the awp. What is to stop a sewer storm on
aztec without the awp?

I also agree that the awp takes some level of skill to use as opposed to
some peoples claims that its a n00b weapon. There is a reason almost all CAL
players use it as their primary weapon. Watch some cal demos, 90% of the
time the guy has a deagle and an awp.

I also agree that the problem is not the awp being too powerful of a weapon
for the game, it is the players not evening the skill. Like Unix here said,
a skilled player can own in any weapon. They just prefer the awp.

I would also like to point out that the awp gets harder and harder to use
with each version of CS. The accuracy gets less and less wiht each new
version. Remember when shooting the guy in the foot(I loved doing this on
the bridge on dust) would kill him, now you have to hit them in the chest or
head. The weapon has made some changes and I think right now it is a fairly
balanced between power and difficulty of use.

I would urge you to take Unix's challenge and play with the awp for a week.
Really play with it. I am sure you would come to love it.

Flavored UNIX [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote in message

in agreement... look at most top clan matches, it's all awp
 vs. awp.

Not really. Granted, the AWP is a huge factor in match-play, and
could possibly be considered the most important weapon in the
game. But you very rarely see a top clan buy 4 or 5 AWPs in a
round in a match. For one thing, the economics of the game
usually preclude everyone from being able to afford one (there's
a reason the AWP is so expensive), but even if the entire team
were rich it doesn't make tactical sense to have 5 snipers --
it's much more effective to have several assault rifles
 supporting your sniper(s).

The notable exception is on defense in de_aztec, which can be
controlled totally by a team of five good snipers. I seem to
remember old X3 using all AWPs as CTs on de_dust2 in a match
once, but again, it's much more usual to see one or two snipers
 per side.

i think the awp in it's current rendition is an important part
 of the game.
it means you don't just run around crazy in open spaces, you
 have to respect
open terrain, long hallways, etc just like real teams/soldiers
 do. but i
think that in the hands of an awp expert the weapon becomes
 unbalancing. i
have a couple of regulars on my server who can work absolute
 magic with that
thing. it makes it no fun for the others.

Totally agree it's an important part of the game, but I disagree
with the logic of how it unbalances the game. Yes, an AWP in the
hands of an expert will wreak havoc, but then again so will any
weapon in the hands of an expert. The real issue is balance of
skill, not balance of weapons: a CAL-i level player armed with a
glock will own a server of casual players. On the other hand, if
everyone on the server is on the same talent curve, then AWPs
should make for much more interesting games (as long as there's
room to improve, more on this later).

You say the AWP makes it no fun for the others, but that's
placing a premium on the fun of the unskilled. This is your
choice, of course. But remember that for skilled players, the
fun comes in the perfection and execution of their skill. I
guess some feel they have to sacrifice the fun of the skilled for
the fun of the unskilled, and it seems to me that the servers
which restrict the AWP are making that claim.

But consider this: while some players may not care about
improving at CS in any way, I think many (if not most) of your
regs actually try to become better. With a little wise prodding,
you may be surprised to find that your regs come to love the AWP.

I speak from experience here. I had a strong community on my
16-player pub for two years, with about 200 regulars. Back then
I wasn't aware of the beauty of competitive CS, so we ran a free
money, AWP-restricted server. In our minds the scout was more
manly since it wasn't a one-kill weapon, and whenever newcomers
would protest we'd call them AWP pussies and such.

Then I started playing in and following the competitive CS scene,
and realized how important the AWP is (and, equally as
enlightening, how *difficult* the AWP is to use). Suddenly our
ban on the AWP seemed silly; our ignorance of the economics of CS
 (since we always had

Ok, running I might have been exagerating, but frequently you'll watch
people hiding behind a wall.. They sidestep out with their awp zoomed,
and are able to fire and get an accurate shot without pausing to steady
the weapon, crouching, etc. My entire point was that the awp is lacking
any sort of random movement such as you would expect in a realistic
 sniper rifle.

This is a talent learned. You sidestep and press the other way. If you fire
at the right time you get a true 100% accurate shot but this is hard to do
and takes lots of practice and skill. I am learning, slowly.

SNIP

This was remedied before, and apparently someone has figured a way
around it again because it's something I see fairly often.

I have seen this in the last couple weeks too and while it sucks, its no
reason to attack the weapon itself. A hack is just as deadly and maddening
on any other weapon.

Yes, this was my point. It's not realistic, and while I agree that
nothing in CS is, I personally think the awp is disproportionately
 unrealistic compared to other weapons.

so was the rail gun in Q3 an unfair weapon as well? There will always be the
TOP, most powerful weapon. Taking that away, takes away the reward of the
good player. My reward for killing 5 peopel in the pistol round is that I
get to buy an awp the next round and actually have some fun.

I think Ryan's point was, at the moment there is no official place to

perhaps if the users started deluging the upper echelons of Valve

yeah, maybe I was wrong in posting that info but as Dave said I was
suggesting that if you put the problem in front of the big dogs then maybe
they will be encouraged to kick some ass on the problem. I know how
development works and if a manager gets pissed because he suddenly starts
getting complaints from users(and alot of them no less) in his personal
email address it makes magical things happen overnight.

some commands with your banned.cfg need to be in autoexec rather than

Sorry this may be a double post, I email the 1st time from the wrong
account. So I am seeing all these posts about what var's should be in
what configs. I am a little confused as I have never see any sort of
guide or Bosworth's book of Etiquette on the matter. It appears that
log on in multiple config's causes issues. If it does, it does,
although I can't see why turning on something that is already on would
hose it. But that's not my question here. When I saw the log on in
statsme.cfg, I did disable it simply because I know it doesn't need to
be run twice. So I guess I stayed out of trouble without knowing it. I
have also seen posts on this list and in other forums regarding where
stuff should be. Why is this? This is my cstrike startup:

 ./hlds -game cstrike +maxplayers 12 -noipx +map de_dust2

Everything else is in my server.cfg file. I have never had an
autoexec.cfg file although I have always been aware of it and how it
works. I guess I just felt it was redundant and not needed, and I
preferred to keep all my settings in one file. I also try to make sure
I don't have duplicate settings in other cfg's that come along w/ mods I
use. Am I missing out on something by doing this? What are the reasons
if any for having an autoexec.cfg or putting certain var's in certain
 cfg's?

wondering if anyone else is noticing higher than normal memory usage. I run

server isn't running tip-top. The same server listed below, with the
exception that I removed the democracy plugin and updated StatsMe to 2.5.6
was just showing the following:

cstrike -port 27015 -pingboost 2

I just restarted the server + halfd since I was getting reports of pings
skyrocketing. My other 32 player server is currently showing the following,
and will probably need to be restarted soon as well.

nobody 32516 22.3 42.5 359100 218612 ? SMay31 930:33 ./hlds -game
cstrike -port 27015 -pingboost 2

This box is identically configured, the only difference being a faster
processor (Athlon XP 1800+) and a lower version of RH (7.2 as opposed to
7.3). Both boxes have everything stripped of what they don't need, all RPMS
patched up to date, and low-fat kernels compiled from the latest source
(2.4.18). Just wondering if anyone else is noticing skyrocketing memory
usage, and if so, what steps they've taken to troubleshoot/fix. Thanks
again.

Hello hlds_l gods,

I've seen it before and though that I saved it. I was mistaken on the
saved it part. Does anyone know the calculation you can use to
determine the approximate amount of players a given amount of bandwidth
can sustain. For instance, if you wanted to figure out how many
players a 1.5/384 ADSL line could handle; or a 768/768. Also, is it
dependent
upon the MOD ? For instance, would Counter Strike require more
bandwidth than plain vanilla Death Match ?

Thanks all,

well to start I would make sure you have stuff in your mapcycle.txt. If this
is not the problem then set the mapcycle perms to 777 and see if it works.
If this works, play with the perms to get a level you like and that works.
If it doesn't work tell us your results.

It seems that I know what the problem is, but I don't know the solution.

After the map is about to change, it freezes up. Normally after a few
seconds you see the Loading in the screen, and then it changes map.

When I manually change the map, it loads the map as usual and players can
connect again. When you open the console and type listmaps nothing
happens ! So I think that that might be the problem. It doesn't know which
map to load next.

On the server the chmod for the mapcycle.txt is 644, and for some weird
reason the server doesn't see it. I run two CS servers on the same
machine, with different start-up lines, motd's and server.cfg's.

Do I need to put the mapcycle.txt in the server.cfg somewhere or in the
startupline ? Or do I need to make the mapcycle.txt executable ?

If someone knows, please reply ;)

Kind regards,

Marcel Beringer

 Subject: Round start ???

 Hi all,

I installed a Hl CS server for a friend of mine the same way I already
installed a couple of other servers.

The problem with the new server is, that when people connect they can only
spectate. So they enter the server, and cannot pick a team.

I have used exactly the same server.cfg as I have used for the other
servers ( the ones that DO work :) ) but still it doesn't seem to work
 correctly.

The server IP is 195.64.68.54:27015 and 195.64.68.54:27025

Doesn anyone know what could be the problem here ?

 Grtz,

 Marcel

http://quakest.xmission.com/banned.txt /some guys banned list, not proven
HERE IS THE ONE
http://guest:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/ban/
Simon garner posted this a while ago. Maybe with his guidance/help we could
get something like this going in the states and other countries. It uses
mysql and php. He offered at the time to provide the source. If I can get
one of my extra computers back, I would not mind running this. I only have
cable, but this is not really that bandwidth intensive.

The way they solved the trust issue was that when you submitted an ID you
had to give a reason with it for why they were banned. They could also apeal
to it looks like and get unbanned, but they were on probation meaning if
they screwed around again they were banned. What happens is when ID's are
submitted you give a reason such as PB detected OpenGL, Intentional Team
Killing/Team Hurting, abusive towards players and myself, this person is
[ :) ]Creed, was caught wusing wallHax by PB(gameplanet servers). This site
also stored who submitted the cheater. Since it is in mysql, I am sure there
is a way to also filter by cheat they were using. For instance if you want
to ban haxors, but not TKers if you do not run a FF server you could just
search for that. It is a pretty sweet way of doing this.

Comments simon? What do you guys think of simon's site? Interested in using
that system?

The latest Linux release was the best so far too.

Ya except that you CANNOT run the linux version in required mode cuase it
kicks everyone for No PB Client violations even though everyone is
running
an up-to-date and valid PB client.

Works fine for me in required mode.

Anyway, it's a real shame, now we get to welcome back all the cheaters.
Woohoo.

This leads me onto a new idea, however.

Would anyone be interested in taking part in a universal blacklist system?
Whereby trusted people on servers can submit wonid's to a list on a web page
somewhere. You then run a small daemon on your server that contacts this
page and grabs the wonid's and sticks them in the banlist. The only problem
with this system is that you have to trust the people submitting ids for
banning. Actually proving a cheat is difficult but maybe possible by
watching the first person perspective in the new spectator mode. Perhaps a
screenshot or demo from this would be required before accepting an id..

If anyone is interested in taking part in a coordinated blacklist like this,
I'd be happy to organise it. I know there are blacklists out there already,
but I'd like to think this would be better coordinated and automated..

Comments anyone?

Ever since the 1016 to 1100 fiasco, it hasn't gotten better or redeemed
itself. What are you basing this on that it's the best one yet?

can you believe owning a game for almost 3 years and still getting free

I love the valve team and the CS team... and would definitely pay for CS 1
 time per year
 for great add-ons/updates.

Try turning adminmod off and see if it makes a difference.

Correct RE: Dll's, that's why I just remove it from my liblist.gam. My
servers were upgrade w/ a full 1.1.0.8, and CS 1.3. Got the latest 2.50.07
adminmod and metamod. Still not ok. All servers have been idle here for
about 6 hours and they're all up. As soon as I get some peeps, I'll be
watching them go down. :*(

Hey there, I don't think the Linux server uses mp.dll. I don't think the
file even exists in the Linux install. Not only that, if it was a problem
loading a DLL or SO, the server would not run at all.

This is how I upgrade mine. I untar the full install package in a temporary
area. Then I delete all the files I don't want to overwrite, like:
liblist.gam, server.cfg, etc. After that I cp -R * /path/to/dir

If you are running admin mod, you need the latest version and you should
also check metamod.org for an update and replace metamod_i386.so.

Start over with the full install packages and you should be ok.

Hey man. .. I was having the same problem with my servers. They'd run for
some period of time (ALWAYS less than 1 map) and then crash with no
explanation. After talking with some other epople I fund out that if you
edit the file:
liblist.gam
you'll see the following line:
gamedll dlls\mp.dll
Obviously that is not correct. Since it is a LINUX server it should be:
gamedll dlls/mp.dll
So I changed that and started the server up .. Everything seemed to be
running smoothly ... I got through 3 maps and then the server crashed. But
it was a different type of crash this time We were playing ... all the
sudden things go weird .. The you saw Warning: Connection Problem .. then
you got Server connection timed out. I went to the logs and found this:
L 09/21/2001 - 00:11:16: Server cvar sv_wateraccelerate = 6
L 09/21/2001 - 00:11:16: Server say Server now running STANDARD config
file.
L 09/21/2001 - 00:11:16: Server say get your stats and other srever info
at:
L 09/21/2001 - 00:11:16: Server say http://eka.bluegrass.net;
L 09/21/2001 - 00:11:16: Server shutdown
L 09/21/2001 - 00:11:16: Log file closed

Notice the L 09/21/2001 - 00:11:16: Server shutdown line. I don't know
what caused that. Anyway, I started the server back up a minute ago and am
waiting to see if it happens again. That is all the info I have gathered
on
this problem. Please if you find out ANYTHING at all about this, please
please please let me. It is driving me nuts cause it doesn't seem to be
happeneing to alot of people.

I've got 3 linux servers running, upgraded to 1.1.0.8 and CS
 1.3. 2 (#1 and
#2)run on the same machine w/ symlinks for everything but the
 config files
and are on the same pipe. The third (#3) is on another
 machine different
pipe. #1 can't get past a 30 minute map of dust. Sometimes
 crashing in 4
minutes, sometimes 29 minutes into the map. No errors are
 given. And peeps
have to be on. It can sit idle for hours w/o a problem. #2
 seems to get
through several maps w/o crashing. #3 too. All are running
 the latest
metamod, adminmod 2.50.07. (Tried it w/o those too).

This is driving me and the players NUTS! I'll provide
 whatever info more is
needed. Valve if you need telnet access to the server just
 ask. Anything
 to get this bug fixed.
