Re: [JAWS-Users] Opinion wanted, should I upgrade my jaws?
I am using JAWS8.0 successfully, as are many others on the list here. JAWS8 has the extra RealSpeak Solo Synth voices included on its CD, which offer a nice alternative (if one wants one) in say-all. For Internet Explorer 7 (with its enhanced access to RSS newsfeeds and podcasts) you're best with JAWS8 for now. I think the Skim Reading feature was also enhanced slightly. - Original Message - From: Lisa [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Wednesday, August 22, 2007 5:11 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Opinion wanted, should I upgrade my jaws? Re: [JAWS-Users] Using MS Word Thesaurus with Office 2003
Hi Lennie, When I hit shift+f7, the word becomes highlighted and when I get to synonym, I choose insert and the word that is highlighted is replaced by the synonym. Most of the time, anyway... You are right; the Jaws cursor has to be routed to PC cursor when you are on the synonym. When I put the Jaws cursor on the synonym and hit the right mouse key, I get the insert, copy and lookup screen. Also, if the PC cursor is at the beginning of the word in the document for which I am looking for the synonym, the insert put the result in the document in front of the word , thus not replacing it. However, if the PC cursor is in the word itself, the insert will replace the word in the document. I guess that this is normal? Thanks for your help. Re: [JAWS-Users] Opinion wanted, should I upgrade my jaws?
Lisa, The first question you (and the sales person I think) should ask, is about your current computer situation and what will you be doing in the future with respect to computing. If you are on windows XP today, and plan to be using the computer in the future, you will probably be upgrading to IE 7 at the very least. For that reason, staying current with your Screen Reader will be important. If you plan to buy a new computer in the next year or two, you will probably be getting Vista and in that case, I suggest you buy JAWS 8 now and get the SMA. That would give you all the features in JAWS 7 and 8 your are missing out on now and set you up to begin using Vista as soon as you can. Purchasing before JAWS 9 releases this Fall will say you money as well in the long run. If on the other hand you are using Windows 98 with IE 6 today, and your not planning to change anytime soon, then I would suggest you only get upgraded to JAWS 6.2 (available for free to JAWS 6 license holders, from the Downloads page at FS). A couple of the highlights worth considering include: * Support for Vista Operating System. * All the DAISY Training material and the DAISY Player now installed with JAWS 7 and 8 versions. * The RealSpeak Synthesizer that is included with JAWS 8, mentioned by others. * The new Alternative Say All option so you can use Eloquence for navigating but have RealSpeak or other SAPI Synthesizer kick in when you start a Say All. * The FS Clipboard so you can append to clipboard rather than over writing it. This is great on Web pages I think. * The Check for Updates feature in the Help Menu. * Navigation Quick Keys for Microsoft Word, like you have available in IE. * The JAWS Find feature now retains the history of the searches you perform to make it easier to recall. * AOL, MSN, and Yahoo instant messenger programs are all improved. Well, you get the idea. If you install the Demo version of JAWS 8, you can review all the What's New write ups, try out the DAISY Training material, and give it a test drive at least. Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws 8 doesn't focus where i want it to
Hi Joanne, Please check the version of JAWS 8 you are using. 8.0.2173 is the latest and you can get that via the Check for Updates feature in the Help Menu. What you are describing I have seen as well but I'm sure this is corrected and I just checked in the latest 8.0 and did not experience it. What I think is happening for you is that when you ALT TAB, it is not flushing each program that you hear as you go. So after pressing it ALT TAB a few times quickly, you are hearing the items in the order you went by them rather than the current one you'll get if you release ALT. It is because you had actually ALT TABBED right by the item you want but speech had not gotten interrupted so you got fooled. Hope this makes sense. Please try to update if your not on the latest JAWS 8 and see if that is not cleared up. I also encourage you to call support if you can recreate the scenario for them over the phone. Or even in Messenger itself the focus will often land in another tab instead of right at the typing window where it's supposed to land. I don't know if I'm making sense or if there's a fix, because even though I actually think Jaws 7 works better for most things I do think 8 works better with forms mode on websites. (Now if someone has a fix for 7 working better with forms mode I won't have to worry about 8, I guess--smile.) But I am concerned that version 8 seems to let go of focus and won't stay still. Eric is correct in that I am alt-tabbing okay through most things, but when a message comes to Windows Messenger that's when it acts up and either won't stay in that particular window or it goes to a tool tip place instead of the typing window part of Messenger's window. That's amazing because I think I had more focus issues with JAWS 7 than I do now with JAWS 8, which is behaving quite nicely these days. Also welcome to the 20 plus members who have joined us in the past couple of weeks. Chris, thanks, I will try it again. I used it once--I think with an earlier Jaws version--and had some trouble finding things easily because of the tree view layout. Eric is correct in that I am alt-tabbing okay through most things, but when a message comes to Windows Messenger that's when it acts up and either won't stay in that particular window or it goes to a tool tip place instead of the typing window part of Messenger's window. I don't know if anyone recommends a specific version of Messenger that works best with Jaws and maybe mine is an older one. I'm considering replacing some of the links up on the site converting them to pop up sub pages in a new browser window. The purpose of that would be so that when a person closes a sub page, IE reading a documentation file or what ever the case may be they would land pretty much in the exact same spot from where they started. If I do this the way to get around the issue of a pop up blocker preventing you from accessing a given link is instead of just hitting enter by itself you would need to hold down one of your shift keys and then hit enter. Re: [JAWS-Users] Opinion wanted, should I upgrade my jaws?
Hi Eric, thank you for that bit of information. How long do I have to get jaws 8? I'm really considering upgrading because I have Microsoft office student and home edition 2007 on my computer, and I'm having a hard time using it with my jaws 6. Re: [JAWS-Users] Opinion wanted, should I upgrade my jaws?
Lisa, Once JAWS 9 is released, you would then have to purchase version 9 when you upgrade. If you order 8 now with and SMA (that means you'll also receive 9 and version 10), you end up paying the same price and will ultimately get version 10 as well. So your question is, how long before 9 is released... We have been targeting a release date in late September but that has slipped a bit already. We are completing some significant changes with respect to Microsoft Office including the calendar and getting this all wrapped up is taking longer than I had hoped. Since this is delaying JAWS 9 a bit, you will have more time to delay the purchase but I would not let it go past September in order to take advantage of the savings. Re: [JAWS-Users] importan announcement
I do for a fact screen members before they are allowed to post. You don't see any Spam on the list, at least not so far any way. So far as any of those free services are concerned this list is no longer using any of them at all. It in fact is being hosted by my web space provider actually and as such is independent of Yahoo or google. Carlene, I always use the forms mode so that part is understood. Steve's idea of alt plus down arrow doesn't work. So I think I will have to take Flore's suggestion and add the jaws 7.01 patch. [JAWS-Users] Jaws problem
Below you will see a problem with Jaws and a program, from my Friend Gary, in Florida. Just wondering if there is an answer for this? Gary noted: I recently loaded version 8 of jaws in the demo version. I find it works as expected if I use IE6 for a browser. My problem is that I use an AOL look alike program and that whenever I browse a website with it and using JAWS 8 all it reads on every prompt or line (using arrows or tab), all I get is the message opening Parent Directory. I called Freedom Scientific about this and they said they had heard of this but had no fixes they could offer. Geesh, does every AOL user have problems with JAWS 8 and I wonder if its through all the sureleases of version 8. Can anyone offer a solution to this annoying problem?
