Yeah, but you can't do that. You either have to have JAWS in the system tray
or the taskbar.

No. I want to have it out of the sys tray, I know how to do this..
But if it's not in the sys tray then will it show when I alt tab around?
I want it not in the sys tray and I don't want to alt tab and find it there
either, but I do want it to start up at system bootup.
Is this clear?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws in System Tray

2007-10-07 Thread Chris Hallsworth
The benefit I can think of is that JAWS will not be in the alt tab list, so
if you have multiple applications open you can alt tab to them without alt
tabbing to JAWS. I like JAWS in my system tray, but some people prefer it in
the taskbar. It's just personal preference.

What would be the real benefit of having JAWS invisible both in the system

Don't know if I really caught what you are looking for, but by default
JAWS is actually shown in an application window when 'alttabbing' to that
window.

When being in the JAWS window, press the ALT key, when the Options menu
will appear, and then arrow once to the right to open the Options tree
view. The first option in the tree view should be 'Basics...'. Press Enter
and tab to 'Run JAWS from System Tray' and check it by pressing the Space
key. Then press Enter, close JAWS like other applications with ALT + F4
and restart it. Now JAWS shouldn't appear as an application window on your

Was it that what you were looking for?

[JAWS-Users] Misspelled Words, JAWS, Finnish and Smileys

2007-10-07 Thread Jyrki Voutilainen
Oh, I am *very* sorry about some misspelled words in my last message, but
I never proofread it. But they could 'look' quite funny when using JAWS
with any synthesizer. But Eloquence with JAWS or some other synthesizer is
a very good proofreader, but only if the language used is supported like
Finnish, for instance. But reading Finnish with American or Brittish
English checked could be too funny to cope with, and that happened me
while doing some Business English exercises for my present school, and I
had to stop working for a while because of un-controlled laughing!

And finally: Should smileys bee used on that list at all, or do they only
make the reading of messages more confusing? Or could they be replaced
with something like or be totally avoided? But perhaps reading
Finnish with English checked is too funny to describe with any smiley?

Regards,

Jyrki Voutilainen

[JAWS-Users] classic scheme with attribute

2007-10-07 Thread Tony Hernandez
Hi.

I wanted to see where I had bolded some words in a document I wrote a few days
ago, so I set the sound scheme to classic with attribute information. It says
which words are bolded if I navigate by word or do a say all, but not when I
navigate by line. I'm using JAWS 8 with windows xp home and office 2003. Can
anyone tell me if it's possible to get the say line commands to tell me the
atribute info too?

[JAWS-Users] PC Arrows and Skype Chat Messages

2007-10-07 Thread Jyrki Voutilainen
Hi there,

With vary great frustration I noticed, once again, that things may work
differently also when using the same JAWS (8.0) and Skype (3.5) versions:

One of my friends and I have exactly the same versions of the software
mentioned before, but still he is able to read the Skype Chat messages
also with the PC arrows, but I'm not. One possible reason could be
different display adapters?

My friend mentioned has a recently purchased laptop, and I tried the same
with my approximately three-year-old desktop, but exactly with the same
software than he, and we both run Windows XP Home SP 2 at the moment. But
my XP will very soon be updated to XP Professional, but for other reasons
than that.

the JAWS's behavior depends certainly on how the information is sent to
the screen, so the version and the model of the display adapter should
play some role there, shouldn't it? Why don't update the display adapter
at the same time than the os too, because it's a big update anyway?

Best regards,

Hi Siobhan,

What did you do on the site? Try searching for the artist "Carmen", and see
what results you come up with. Somebody else brought it up on another list,
and i went there to do that and wasn't impressed by what I found. It may be
that the person should have been more specific; introduced further

Hi Flore. I just went there and while the site isn't fantastic in terms of
links being labeled, I only really saw that as a problem. I wonder if
people's views of a website are so differing that you might not have many
agreeing with you. I'm trying to come across polite and so I hope you don't
take my criticism as anything other then I had no trouble with the site.
Thanks for the site though.

Now if only *all* lists would implement that sort of policy. I've heard of
people being requested to keep their auto-responders enabled while away from
work; so the ticket then is to unsubscribe from listservs, or have it

I've just added the following to the list guidelines.

No auto responders are to be used on this list! Those who use auto
responders for vacations and so forth must make sure that this list is not
included. Any person who sends an auto response message will be removed!

Re: [JAWS-Users] power point

2007-10-07 Thread Annette
If you are using JAWS 7.x or 8.x, I'm thinking that the tutorial listed on
that web page will not be very helpful. If my memory serves me correctly,
JAWS 7 and PowerPoint worked together very differently and much better then
earlier combinations. Hopefully, others on this list can provide more
details.

I have not come across any tutorials for PowerPoint, I'm self-taught.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 8 and blue screen of Death etc.

2007-10-07 Thread Jyrki Voutilainen
Very many thanks to you, David Griffith, for your very helpful information
below.

I can tell you all that the blue screen problem is solved by that time by
installing another display driver on the computer mentioned, but the
information you gave could be *very* helpful in a situation like that in
the future, and a also have plans to update my own laptop after
3-4-year-usage of my present one, and I still hav a well-working desktop
here in my home office.

I would -by the way - *never* use only a laptop, not even a good one, for
all my work, but have a desktop-laptop-network instead. I workd maby two
years having only a laptop in usage, but that became very frustrating a)
because of lacking peripheral connections, b) because of unusable
integrated audio hardware in that particular model etc. And then there is
the maintenance as a whole; in a desktop you can update almost every
single unit of the hardware if needed, but not in a laptop. But if having
a well customized desktop in usage all the time, the problematic issues in
your laptop aren't so hard to cope with, because you still have a
hopefully well-functioning computer in usage. But in the earlier days
having more than one computer in usage was more rare because of higher
hardware prices than nowadays. Today a well-funcioning basic desktop unit
can be set up by approcimately 400 euros, but using the cheapest hardware
parts. That unit could be used as a testing unit, for instance, and you
could still do your main work using your main unit built of better
components. Perhaps you still may prefer to use a separate soundcard or
display adapter instead of an integrated one etc. But why use any
expensive parts if the unit is beeing used for some test or server
purposes only?

Have any of you - by the way - noticed any difference in JAWS's behavior
when using integrated soundcards and display adapters compared to using
separate ones? My friend mentioned is an audiophile and deals with
professional audio software, and he usis, of course, a separate soundcard
like AVE64 or something like that, but I am not as much involved in that
than he is. But even I am using something else than basic loudspeakers and
headphones in my setup.

Best regards,

Jyrki Voutilainen

Re: [JAWS-Users] Finding the width of a cell in Excel 2002

2007-10-07 Thread Annette
In JAWS 8 the command is Insert+f+f. That is hold down the Insert or JAWS
key, and press the letter F twice. This will give you a virtual JAWS window
with all kinds of info about the cell. Unfortunately, using this command
will give you how many points wide and high the cell is, for example 48
points wide by 12 points high. When you obtain the column width from the
column submenu off of the menu bar, you will be told that the cell is 8.4
wide. I have no idea what type of measurement Microsoft is using.

Another thing to keep in mind is that there does not appear to be a way to
obtain the width of a range of cells that are merged. As best that I can
figure out, you can only obtain the width of the cell in the first column in
the range.

Let me know if this does not make any sense and I will try to explain it
differently.

On my Toshiba lap top the hotkey to turn off the mousepad is either
shift-f9 or control-f9--but I don't remember which. I can also do it
through the system tray.

[JAWS-Users] Regarding my last post

2007-10-07 Thread Siobhan
Hello again. Sorry for two messages back to back, but I just wanted to clarify
that there is no "problem" with how the keystroke is set up, and I do realize
that versions before nine have not had that. I just wanted to clear that up so
no one thought I was coming down on jaws whilst still in beta. My thinking
is: Say everything you want to, that way something might be done in this
release, or worked on for the next one. Thanks again,
Siobhan

[JAWS-Users] Is there a plan to fix this?

2007-10-07 Thread Siobhan
Hello list. I'm using jaws nine, and as I've stated previously I find it
pretty difficult to use right hand way at the top, insert, then way down with
the left, j to open the jaws menu. I know that the jaws key and insert are
interchangeable, or that's my understanding, I was wondering if anyone else on
here felt as I do about this keystroke? It's not impossible to use but the
left jaws key and j would make much more sense, in my opinion. If this make be
taken into consideration I would appreciate it. I'm not trying to make more
work for the jaws scripters or writers or anyone like that, just voicing a
suggestion. I'm interested to hear anyone else's thoughts on whether or not
this would be approved or not. Thanks in advance for taking the time to read
this,
Siobhan

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS Version 9.0.348U

2007-10-07 Thread AMTK161
Hi Richard,

Sometimes what has happened with me is a pop-up message has come up, telling
me that Windows has blocked access to the attachment. This happens to me
using Windows Vista and Windows Mail, although it has happened with earlier
versions of JAWS on Windows XP. What I usually did was hit control+f as
though I were going to forward the message to someone, tab over to the
attachments list view and open it from there.

I wish there was a way to disable this, as it usually only happens with .wma
and .mp3 files. (Admittedly, though, I haven't gotten an infected file to
see if Windows blocks it or not and don't plan on trying, ).

Ah, what a good idea. I seem to remember someone who kept sending me
autoresponders every time I posted to the list. If you're going away, for
goodness sake let the list server know please, and not just send out

I've just added the following to the list guidelines.

No auto responders are to be used on this list! Those who use auto
responders for vacations and so forth must make sure that this list is not
included. Any person who sends an auto response message will be removed!

Re: [JAWS-Users] hot key for device manager

2007-10-07 Thread Cathie J
My computer techy guy who hat re formatted my Acer laptop told me when went
to the site to find the info wich was apparently function key f8; however
this did seem to lock everything so I tried function key f7 & that works. So
sure check out the brand site then if no luck try a few near by keys.
Definely handy to be able to use.

All the versions of acrobat have pdf to text. It depends on the

Chris,
Feel free to email me off the list with an example of a mail message that gives
you trouble. Send it to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I guess the first thing I would try is to turn off Table Processing in the
INSERT V, Adjust JAWS Options dialog. Did you try this?

Eric--

I continue to be frustrated by Jaws 8.0 (plus updates) and the Jaws 9 Beta's
inability to read many e-mails in Outlook 2007. This appears to be
primarily a problem for html e-mails in table format. Jaws reads the table
row and column numbers but not the text; sometimes it will read the standard
"boilerplate" regarding how to request removal from a list but not the
substantive content. Also, I find that Jaws 9 does not read even the table
format information in "say all" mode. On my laptop. I am hoping these
problems can be addressed as they were not probles in Jaws 7.1. Thank
you.Chris Bell

Well, I guess I blew this one.

It has been a long week. This message was sent in error to the JAWS users
list instead of the Freedom Scientific Private Beta List. I apologize.
Please disregard and do not ask about the where the file is now or how to
get this update, we have removed them from these locations.

We will be getting a new public beta update out once we complete work and
testing on the next round of fixes over the next 10 days.

Hello Private Beta Testers,

JAWS Private Beta Build 9.0.356 is ready for testing. This one includes
quite a bit of change since the 353 build because we have been fixing items
that were held out of the public beta builds as we attempted to stabilize it
as best we could. The next update we do for the public will be in about 10
days or so I hope. Your attention to this list of fixes is greatly
appreciated.

The Known issues is empty today. Rosemary and Stephen are both off sipping
Margaritas somewhere so we are not as professional in the write up as we'd
like to be.

Special note: The Red Sox are going for game two tonight at 8:30 ET and the
Yankees will be going for their second loss on Saturday!

 Regards,

Eric

JAWS Private Beta Build 9.0.356 is ready for testing.

JAWS 9.0 Update

An update is provided for your convenience as well as to continue with some
level of testing of the update process during the beta cycle. Not all builds
provided during the beta cycle will have the update option. As the product
progresses, some builds will be new BASE BUILDS upon which subsequent
updates can be installed. The Automatic Update will update to JAWS 9.0.356
from the following prior builds:

* 9.0.353 Base Build or Update.

*   9.0.348 Base Build.

Attempts to update to 9.0.356 from any build other than what is listed will
fail by design. If in doubt or you have trouble, simply use the full install
instead. Updates are not yet available for Windows Vista, and are not
available for Windows 2000; you need to download and install the full
version.

* Update Patch:

1. Please enter 90909 into the special code dialog in the JAWS about
box dialog. Go to the Help Menu, About. TAB to the special access code
button and press ENTER. Type or paste 90909 into the edit field.
2. Select check for updates on the JAWS UI help menu. You will find
today's 9.0.356 in the list box.
3. TAB to your choice and proceed with installation.

* Update Tip: How do you check to see if a listed update will update my
installed version of JAWS?

If you navigate the list of updates and highlight one of the listed updates
you can TAB to the detail button and press spacebar to get a list of the
versions of JAWS which can be updated by that particular update.

* If the Update fails:

Either Repair or install the full build, if available: Check out the FAQ:
How do I perform Installation Maintenance procedures like Repair and Modify?

NOTES

*   JAWS 9.0 beta will expire December 1, 2007.
* For those who are testing the Outlook Calendar work: to test the
calendar, you need to disable the Task List option in View, To Do, menu.
ALT+V to drop the View menu, then select the To Do Bar sub menu,
then uncheck the Task List option.

This command is specific to brand and even model of laptop. I highly
recommend that a user read up on their particular brand and model of laptop

Erm, no, because standby turns off everything, including any connection

Re: [JAWS-Users] Antivirus Software and JAWS 8.0/9.0

2007-10-07 Thread Chris Hallsworth
I'm not David, but I'm sure that it's fully accessible like any other
version of AVG Anti-virus. Hope that helps.

Re: [JAWS-Users] hot key for device manager

2007-10-07 Thread Chris Hallsworth
Hi. This doesn't appear to work on my Toshiba laptop, so yes this must be
laptop-specific. I'd love to be able to turn off my mouse pad, but the only
way to do it as far as I can see is to actually disable the mouse pad
through device manager. Does anyone using a Synaptecs pointing device know
how to do this in a better way? Thanks in advance.

Hi, Here's a short cut for disabling/enabling the mouse pad on laptops
- at least mine. xp homefunction key f7
The function key is one key to the right of the left control key.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Antivirus Software and JAWS 8.0/9.0

2007-10-07 Thread Chris Hallsworth
Ah. That's the e-mail signature that AVG generates to inform the user that
the message has been scanned and whether any viruses were found in either
the incoming or outgoing message. This can be turned off through the AVG
control centre. Hope that helps.
