Re: [LegacyUG] What is the best way to do this?
Michelle, I agree with Laird that Legacy pictures and documents belong under Legacy. My Documents is a relative folder (or Directory if using XP) and is unique to a computer. -- Richard Van Wasshnova On Sun, May 27, 2012 at 12:01 PM, Michele Lewis wrote: > Right now I have all of my genealogy photos and documents in the Legacy > Folder PICTURES (I had subfolders in there). RE: [LegacyUG] Ancestor book
Are you sure you are doing an Ancestor Book Report and not an Ancester Chart? If you click on the Ancestor tab, you are getting a chart. Click on Books/Other, then on Ancestor, and you will get the options. [LegacyUG] How to show adopted son
Thanks for the advice. For the record, I did the following, which seems to work. 1. Add the wife to the husband (since I already had the husband). 2. Add the son as an unlinked individual. 3. Add a mother to this child, linked to the existing "wife". This produces a second "marriage" for the wife with an "unknown" "husband". 4. Focus on the husband and wife and add a child, linking to the adopted son. This gives an "He already has parents" which I ignored. 5. Still focussed on the husband and wife, change the "relationship to father" to adopted and "to mother" to biological. 6. Add notes to say this is speculation and needs more research. It is possible that the adopted son was the legitimate child of the wife's brother (who has died, moved abroad etc.) so I really need to work in this later. Once more unto the to-do list I go. Re: [LegacyUG] What is the best way to do this?
Actually its just a lot easier to find a picture in one of the main folders - don't have to change anything else or go through all those machinations. I have close to 600 photos and images connected and i usually only have to find seven or eight of them and everything is connected again and with the new pathways. Takes me perhaps five minutes - ten if I'm not thinking. It's one of those little things about Legacy I really like. Nichele, I would like to discourage you making this change: Someday you will have to buy a new computer. It will NOT have a folder called "My Documents" like you have with XP now. The new computer will have a different operating system, in the near future it will be "Windows 8". At that time you will have to do this process all over again. That is one of the reasons Legacy puts everything in C:\Legacy\. You will have to locate/find at least one photo from each folder\sub-folder\etc. Laird On 5/27/2012 2:01 PM, Michele Lewis wrote: > > Right now I have all of my genealogy photos and documents in the Legacy Folder > PICTURES (I had subfolders in there). [LegacyUG] Citation issue
I asked this question yesterday but got no response so I thought I would try again today :) :) I just added a bunch of markers to my file from a cemetery I visited yesterday. I formatted the citation but I made an unforeseen error. My citation looked like this.. Red Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery (174 Red Oak Grove Road, Edgefield County, South Carolina), L. Foster and Bertha P. Morgan [double marker] marker, personally read, 2012. I put in [double marker] so that you would know that is what it was but the word marker already appears because that is how the source is set up. So I did a search and replace with this Search:[double marker] marker Replace: double marker The search and replace found all of the occurrences no problem and I replaced all of them. HOWEVER, when I went back to take a look they hadn't really been replaced. They looked exactly as written above. I pulled up the search and replace again and ran it with the exact same criteria but it said there were no matches (like they really had been already replaced). So now I am stuck. The program thinks these have been replaced but they haven't been. Any ideas? [LegacyUG] Name Tags - report style
Hello Two years ago while using Legacy 6, I created a .pdf file that I called Address List. I am currently using Legacy 7 and can’t create this same list in the format I want. I am creating this list by : Reports/All Reports/Name Tags/Customize/I have selected the 5 fields in the order I want/I have selected “Printing in a report Format” What I get is the fields in a format that you would use on an envelop for mailing. I want the fields to go across the page as one line per record. The pdg file I created in 2010 made the report look like a table. How can I adjust the layout/format of my file? RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Chart of All Individuals
Family Chartmasters has done a couple of charts for me and I was very happy with their work. She did a webinar for Legacy a few months ago. Check out their website at https://familychartmasters.com/php/index.php. I definitely remember her saying that they do all kinds of custom charts. Re: [LegacyUG] How to show adopted son
I missed one point in your e-mail (about adding an unknown spouse). What I put in my original e-mail would be done for the "assumed adoptive father". (In other words, while the wife/adopting-husband are in focus.) You would also add an "unknown" "husband" to the woman. (different people do different things for "unknown" names - you'll have to pick your own "poison" for what names you put in the unknown husband's name fields.) And then with this other wife/husband in focus, you would add this child, and then change the "relationship to xxx" settings for both of those parents. I have a "biological" as one of my options. I don't remember if that's how Legacy came or if I added that one. Note that if the adopted child is your focus, you can NOT add a FATHER to it if it already has one father. Instead you have to work with the wife as a focus (give her 2 "husbands" (one with "was not married"?) and then add the child to each wife/husband relationship). I have these options in my "Child-Parent" relationships. Again, not sure if legacy came with these or if I added some. I have gotten into the habit now of putting a "period" in front of an event-name that I create myself (or that come in via an import) - I should probably do the same for relationships I create myself. Lets me know I need to check any results a little closer to make sure it shows up correct in reports. Anyway, here's what options are available in my setup: Adopted Biological Challenged Disproved Foster Guardian Sealing Step Just a thought - it is possible that the child IS biological for both parents. They may have had the child before they got married. So be sure you put something in your NOTES stating that the UNKNOWN HUSBAND and that the BIOLOGICAL/ADOPTED settings for the child are assumed and further research is needed. Concerning what names you do (or do not put) into the UNKNOWN HUSBAND's name fields, I'm following someone else's suggestion, with a few tweaks: [---?--] unknown first name [~--?--] unknown last name Above is usually followed with [[child of xxx]] or [[husband of xxx]] For example: [---?--][[child of Uriah Patton]] This allows me to make sense of the unknown in the NAME LISTS. It is a bit more typing, but I find it helpful. By using the double brackets, I can tell reports to NOT include that info in reports. And the text in single brackets looks OK in reports (in my opinion) and prompts folks to "fill in the blanks". Other folks leave the name fields blank in UNKNOWN individuals. Leaving the fields blanks is kinda the "normal/suggested" method, but I don't like it. That's one of the beauties of Legacy - it is very flexible. Re: [LegacyUG] How to show adopted son
Bob, To be clear, the default of "Blank" for a child - parent relationship is read by Legacy as "Biological". This means, of course, that normally the option to use this facility would only be chosen when the C-P relationship is not biological. * Add the child to both parents. * right click on that child (or any child of the parents for that matter) * Click on Children's settings in the pop-up menu * Make sure the correct child is highlighted in the resulting pop-up window * Change the "Relationship to father" to ADOPTED * NOTE - you normally would NOT use the "Child status" to show adopted (I did this originally). Instead, use the "Relationship to xxx" fields to indicate it individually for each parent. * I wish there was an option for this field to pop up automatically when a child was added (just like when we add a marriage the marriage detail screen shows up). That way we would remember to set this stuff. By default, the relationship is set to BLANK (i.e. - to NOTHING). I say the auto-pop-up would be an OPTIONAL setting because some folks might consider setting these fields as a pain, but some of us would find it helpful. (Yes, I have put in a formal suggestion for this.) Bob On 05/27/2012 02:21, Tony Rolfe wrote: > I have just discovered a census image with a couple who have been > married for 3 years.
