yes, create an event called Census and then use one of the parents as head
of household then via shared events add all the others who were living in
the house at that time

But you cant expect the pc program to know who from the first or second
family was still living with the third family. , unless you create some new
rule like all children from a former marriage automatically get blended
into a new marriage would you want that as a global rule for your file
now???, I doubt it. ..

Re: [LegacyUG] Children View - Show ½ kids

2014-02-21 Thread Jay 1FamilyTree
Kathy, If you can explain how you would accomplish that logically in the
programming side, it might be doable.

But your are asking to see something that is technically almost impossible
considering the "real" genealogical links (via biology) and the "family
group" as a living unit. How is the program supposed to decide who belongs
where??

Legacy is already so versatile overall it can accommodate recording all the
variations into a database.

We all have different wishes, needs and desires. What works for one
does not necessarily work for another.

Why don't you make a suggestion to Legacy to provide that option?
There's a link for that on the Legacy Home page. :-)

Yes, common ancestors will cause endless loops. You should be able to
go into the report options and check a box to not repeat duplicate lines.

Your second question makes no sense. Can you elaborate on what you
mean, please?

Re: [LegacyUG] How to add children?

2014-02-21 Thread Wendy Howard
You don't have to put anything down for the father, if you don't want
to. You can have just the mother, and Legacy will put a 'placeholder'
father in to deal to the necessities of the database, but you won't have
an actual person to deal with.

When/if the time comes that you find out who the father is, add him as a
husband to that woman, and you'll see a checkbox asking if he should be
also added as the father of the children.

But if you do want to put a person in for the unknown father, if it were
my database I'd give him a first name only (no surname), and put it in
privacy brackets so it can be omitted from reports when desired.
Something along the lines of [[Husband of Elizabeth]].

My personal preference would be the first option - no father entered at
all. You may find out later that the kids have different fathers, and
it would be easier to update the data if they didn't already all have
the same phantom father.

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy

RE: [LegacyUG] Children View - Show ½ kids

2014-02-21 Thread CE WOOD
Inferring from your post, your couple married about 1879. Many times children
from separate marriages where not all living together in the new blended
family. Some were on their own, many were with the family of the former spouse,
et alia.

A genealogical program needs to account for all these possibilities, not just
your own particular ancestral circumstances. I, for one, have a surfeit of
mediaeval families in which children remained with the families of the former
spouse or elsewhere. "Home" was definitely not with the latest couple.

A genealogical database needs to be logical. If you want to create a report
that accommodates your special circumstance, that is quite easily accomplished.

Basically, I'd like to be able to see easily what kids of each marriage are a
similar age to each other, and therefore who is likely to still be at home at
any one time..

Having the 2 kids of the current marriage born 1880-1884 first is great, but
then having the 8 kids born between 1862 and 1877 from his first marriage and
then having 5 kids born between 1865 and 1879 from her first marriage - just

[LegacyUG] How to add children?

2014-02-21 Thread Richard Falzini
Hello group,
I have a cousin (now desceased) and she had a son and a
daughter.

I have all of the info on the mother and children, but nothing to tell me who
the father of the children are?

I can only say that the children use the mother's surname.

Can anyone please advise me on how to add the 2 children since the father is
unknown?

Thanks

Re: [LegacyUG] Children View - Show ½ kids

2014-02-21 Thread Kathy Thompson
yes - and that part is fine - but why should the half kids of each former /
subsequent marriage be separated?

Basically, I'd like to be able to see easily what kids of each marriage are
a similar age to each other, and therefore who is likely to still be at
home at any one time..

Having the 2 kids of the current marriage born 1880-1884 first is great,
but then having the 8 kids born between 1862 and 1877 from his first
marriage and then having 5 kids born between 1865 and 1879 from her first
marriage - just looks messy - especially when it's very likely that all the
kids born between 1869 and 1884 are living at home at the same time.

Well, the Family View which you are using, is a view of one man and one woman.
Their children are listed first.
If you switch to the other set of parents in the Family View, their children
are shown first.

This is how it should be.

they do not show up in date order.

I understand and agree that any children of the current marriage should show

his kids shown first, then all of her kids.

I personally think it would be nice if the children could actually display in

I used to have them in a series of sub folders so not sure why some were 'lost'.

I perhaps will now try and move some into sub folders then let the program find
them again with another run of Media Relinker.

I can imagine nothing worse than having all my media files in one folder.

I suppose the 321 plus the media from the Sample family file wouldn't be too
bad.  But then there are the 856 Baptism images, 246 Burial images,
4,911 Census images !

No, the picture location is hard-coded in and can't be changed.

However... if you create a book report to RTF, in your Word Processing program,
you can move the photos where ever you'd like - as well as resize them.

Re: [LegacyUG] Just getting back to Legacy

2014-02-21 Thread J.M. "Jay" Ingalls
Before you install version 8, make a backup file of your database on
another hard drive or on a CD, just in case something goes wrong!

I did not follow the steps in the install procedure, but have it
working. Version 8 installs in a different area if you follow the
standard install steps. Quite easy. Version 7 will still run, but do not
use it!

Just install version 8 then go through the normal operations. The menus
are much different, and I dislike many of those changes, but can adapt.

At your direction, it can search for and find existing Legacy files on
your computer and convert them to version 8, and will also find gedcom
files. Be sure you select your latest files if you have more than one. I
have many databases and that has caused me some problems in the past.

The new options for media re-linking and copying the media files to one
location in the Legacy folder is a good idea, but not working correctly
for me yet.

[LegacyUG] Problem viewing .pdf files

2014-02-21 Thread Ed Ladendorf
When I try to view a .pdf file I have in the media center, I get the message
"There is currently no default media player set up for your computer." If I
double click on a .pdf file anywhere else but Legacy, it opens in Adobe Reader.

I went to "Options", "Customize", "Launch", and set the .pdf file to launch in
Adobe Reader. I then have the option to launch the file I want. The file opens
correctly, but if I'm trying to open the file from the media center, I get the
same message again. Am I doing something wrong, or is this a known bug?

Greetings,
When in the chronology view for only one person (female), the events for birth,
death, and census events are listed. The events that do not show up are
marriage, birth of children, death of spouse. I have all items checked in the
display options. As I noted, this is only occurring with one person. Is there a
box I need to check or uncheck for her? She is not a private individual. I am
not sure if this matters, but some of her censuses that do show up are shared
from her husband.
Thanks for any assistance!

Version 8 will install quite separately to 7, so you can keep both if
you want to. STRONGLY recommend that you allow Legacy 8 to install to
its default location. It will put your data, media etc into a folder
within My Documents.

Once you've installed, tell it to open an existing file and navigate to
your current family file. Legacy 8 will offer to copy (copy, not move)
this to the new location and then convert it. This is also the
recommended method.

You cannot open the Legacy 8 family file in Legacy 7, but you will have
your old version of the program and the file if you want to keep them.

I would enter his name as, for an example Antonio "Tony". This clearly shows
his given name and the name he was commonly known by. The name in quotes will
be the name used in reports if you select that option.

Thanks very much for the suggestions. Your time is appreciated. The story will

Jenny,
If you use the Gather Media tool it will put the documents/images in whatever
folder you want (doesn't have to be the Media folder) but it will only gather
to one folder.

But I presume the Gather Media tool would not keep all the separate folders
within Media - or am I wrong?

All my Source documents are in folders (or folders within folders) according to
type and everything under one main genealogy folder on my
C: drive because that is how they were before I ever started with Legacy.
Photographs attached to people, events or locations within Legacy are in
folders in Legacy's media folder and are smaller-sized JPGs of pictures
(usually TIFFs) stored in my genealogy folder.

No, the picture location is hard-coded in and can't be changed.

However... if you create a book report to RTF, in your Word Processing

RE: [LegacyUG] Edit in family tab

2014-02-21 Thread Michele/Support
Richard,

Click on the Medical Notes tab on your cousin’s Individual’s Information
screen. There you will see the field for the cause of death as well as space
to write any additional notes.

I would record your grandfather’s birth name (that which was recorded on his
birth certificate or baptismal/christening certificate) as his main name and
then I would add his Americanized name as an AKA. I might also write a little
note explaining that he preferred his Americanized name. Another thing you can
do is use a name in quotes in the given field. If you go to the Help file and
type in quoted names you will see how to do this AND when it is appropriate to
do this instead of using the AKA field.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Edit in family tab

Hello Group,

I have my legacy opened to "family Tab" and I'm viewing a
cousin and in the section for "Dth Cau" I want to add her cause as Ventricular
Heart Failure.

How to I add the change?

Also, if my grand father had an Italian first name, but he went by an American
name how would I make note of that?

Thank you

RE: [LegacyUG] Re: Gathering media files in Legacy 8

2014-02-21 Thread Michele/Support
Jenny,
I have ALL my media in the Media file but I have folders for the different
types of documents. This has worked very well for me. Legacy likes that I
have everything in the Media folder and I like having my documents separated by
type.

I can imagine nothing worse than having all my media files in one folder.

I suppose the 321 plus the media from the Sample family file wouldn't be too
bad. But then there are the 856 Baptism images, 246 Burial images,
4,911 Census images !

RE: [LegacyUG] Edit in family tab

2014-02-21 Thread Alex MacPhee
I think you need to click on the Notes icon and enter it under Medical. For
'also known as' names, click on the AKA icon that's about four icons to the
right of Notes.

[LegacyUG] Lengthy notes in Legacy 8

2014-02-21 Thread Ed Ladendorf
While online, I met a man who had been studying the Civil War for years. He
wrote a rather lengthy story that was likely to be a very interesting true
story of my great grandfather's experiences in the Civil War.

It seems to me this story should be placed in the general notes section, but I
want to be sure I'm not mistaken about this. Or maybe it really has no place at
all being there?? It is possible that the man he wrote about is not my great
grandfather (because of spelling variations), but has a high percentage of
being him. If it should not go in the general notes, where should it go? Thanks
for any suggestions.

Ed

[LegacyUG] Photo Printing in Reports

2014-02-21 Thread June Chan
I have looked through the help menu but either can't find or have overlooked
the information I am looking for.

I am printing various reports and I note that all the photos are printing on
the right hand side of the page. Is there any way to place the photos at
random while still keeping them within the event they relate to.

Thank you.

June

[LegacyUG] Re: Gathering media files in Legacy 8

2014-02-21 Thread JMB

I managed to sort out this problem, I have many files archived on various
external US drives so I plugged in one of these and set off the Media Relinker
it found all except for about half a dozen so I printed out the list then let
it Gather all these files and the ones scattered around my internal drives.  I
now have all the files in one folder.

I will go back some time and find the missing files as I will have copies
somewhere.
