Re: [LegacyUG] Donating Legacy research to library

2021-03-19 Thread Leo MacDonald
Hi Gary,
Contact Legacy, at one time many years ago, Legacy would provide it's program
free of charge to a library, not sure if it still does this, I'm talking about
the deluxe edition.

If this is still available than all you will need to do is buy a thum drive and
download your program information to the stick and upload it to the library
Legacy program.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Donating Legacy research to library

Hello all!

I'm in the process of making a donation of my 40+ year research to a major
regional library. I've already rounded up the supporting folders/files
collected over the years. I have Legacy research on my own line; maternal and
paternal lines, inlaws, etc. These are all separate databases. I need to know
how to prepare the actual Legacy database. I know making a GEDCOM is necessary.
What else needs to be included?

LEGACY is contained in a folder named GENEALOGY - Legacy Families. within that
folder are sub-folders 1) DATA; 2) iDrive; 3) Intel; 4) Legacy FS ; 5)
LegacyCharting; 6) Media. By including the entire folder and sub-folders and
the GEDCOMs for each database would the receiving institution be able to run
Legacy and have all the comments, attachments, etc available for their access
and review.

Gary

I think that I have been misunderstanding the meaning to the value we set
for relationships, partly because there seem to be no definition of what it
means that I can find in the help system.

I had assumed that it was the number of steps between people, so my father
is step 1, my grandfather is step 2 (F->G), my uncle is step 3 (F->G->U) and my
cousin in step 4 (F->G->U->C). Hence I would use a large number to be able to
locate my 3rd cousin 3 times removed - 11 steps.

Having been playing with the values and seeing what the effect was, I now
suspect that it is looking for multiple, different paths between people, of
which there are very few in my tree. They would generally be the descendants of
a marriage between cousins with two different routes back to a common ancestor.

My apologies if I have been misleading in the past.

Regards

Chris

The default is 5. That's fine for my file of about 20,000 people. I don't have
much pedigree collapse, no endogamy and I'm not back into royal genealogies.
In my friend's file where there are many aristocratic/royal lines entered, I
found I stopped getting more relationships between two people when it was set
to 30 so I wouldn't go any higher.
Whether it matters to set it higher depends on your computer. Unless your
computer has a heap of RAM, it takes much longer to set relationships if you
jump to 999. The number relates to the number of checks that are made for
alternative lines between the people in your database.

There is no point in upping the non-blood in set relationships from the default
2 as only the very closest non-blood - spouses and close in-laws are included.
There is a point to upping it in the Relationship Calculator.

Hi, before deleting the "Alt Marriage" event you should first go to View-Master
Lists-Event Definitions-Alt Marriage-Show List and if there is more than one
couple sharing this event than print the names. Go to each couple that has the
Alt Marriage event attached and change the event to "Marriage Event".
Once this is completed go back and follow the above steps, if there is no one
sharing the "Alt Marriage" event than click the options button on the left side
of screen and click delete.

I do not know how or when the Alt Marriage event was entered.

I have been trying to delete the “Alt Marriage” event, Leaving only the

I have tried numerous ways to delete the event, and cannot seem to find the

Can someone PLEASE explain the process for Deleting an erroneous event.

Re: [LegacyUG] ScreenShot?

2019-04-26 Thread Leo MacDonald
To do a screenshot press the keyboard key with the picture of 4 windows on it
than press to button on your keyboard with print screen on it. this will take
the screenshot and display it in your folder called Screenshots.

The best way that I use is to produce a descendant file including as many
generations as you wish and save it as a Rich text file, remember that the more
generations that you include results in a larger file, if the person that you
are sending it to has a small mailbox than they may now be able to receive it.

The good thing about the rich text file is that the person you send it to can
open it and copy and paste the information into their file, or simply add new
or missing information to your file, save it and send it back to you with the
corrections. When you produce the rich text file you can also have legacy
insert underlines for missing information.

You may have messed up the 3 digit file extension when you renamed it. Legacy
stores the files in Documents. The main executable file is shown with a blue
dot with a letter L in the middle. The file name is shown with no extension in
the list of files in the Data File but when the file is open on the desktop the
file is shown to have a .fdb extension.

If you left this file in the Legacy folder when it was renamed, you should be
able to rename it again correctly so that it will work. The place to look
would be in the Data file which is found in the Legacy folder. It is found in
Documents/Legacy Family Tree/Data.

This is not the first fight with this Error Number but it's the first one on
which all the Help menu suggestions fail to solve. The final resort and
ultimate "import to Gedcom" has not and likely, will not, be attempted due to
it's source alterations.

I have run the Check & Repair multiple times, even twice in one complete
Maintenance session. I have rebooted computer, tried again. Not sure if
reinstalling the Legacy program will work but that may be next.

The error message reads" Location 19152 not found (1009, 81) Error 3021" It
pops up every time I try to export a portion of my large database to smaller
Legacy family files. Running File Maintenance on the master or larger database
produces no errors; it only happens on the attempted extraction of portions of
the larger file - at least that's when I notice it always.

My questions:

Does "Location 19152" refer to a specific geographical location?

How or where can it be found?

Do the numbers in parentheses refer to individual ID numbers where the location
is missing?

I have the latest Legacy build but hope for a new update soon to see if that
will fix the problem. There seems to be a lot of glitches still floating around
in Version 9 as these error messages pop up quite often. Usually they can be

Yes maybe I do need to learn more about DNA and DNA tests but when they do not

second or third cousins several times removed. Just not what I had expected.

Leo,
It seems you need to learn more about DNA and DNA tests.

Here's why you can't just enter your DNA results for an autosomal test into
Legacy - it's several MB even when zipped.
You can enter an Event to track who has taken a DNA test.
You can also use Events, Tags and Hashtags to track the research you do on your
DNA matches.
There are numerous webinars on DNA.
Here is the link to an article Michele Simmons Lewis wrote on using Legacy to
track your DNA match research.

DNA research is complicated. Autosomal tests are proving very useful.

only let you know possible matches that you may be related to. That is what I
was disappointed about. I took an Ancestry's Advanced Paternal Lineage Test
(Y-Chromoson 46) a few years ago and got the results from them which I entered
into my Legacy program, I had expected to get a more advanced DNA test from
MyHeritage, but I didn't get anything other than I may be related to several
second or third cousins several times removed.

Has anyone managed to add their results to Legacy and if so, how?

[LegacyUG] Restore in Legacy 9 did not include my media files

2017-09-29 Thread Leo MacDonald
Hi Roxanne, since no has offered any help to your problem here is what I'd try
doing.

If your old computer is still working and providing that you have been backing
up your media files on your old computer then just copy your old media files to
a USB stick or burn them to a disk or copy them to a portable hard drive than
transfer them into your new computer. If the hard drive has crashed than take
it to a computer repair shop and see if they can recover those media files,
sometimes they can retrieve files off a crashed drive. Make sure that the media
files that you transfer are the last updated media files.

Terry have you tried using the picture centre, in the "u picture filename"
select the current misspelled name, it should appear in the "attached Pics"

RE: [LegacyUG] pictures -- unlinking

2014-01-18 Thread Leo MacDonald
Hi Cheryl,

Go to the folder where the wrong attached photo is located, click on the wrong
photo, then select to move the photo into another folder on your computer.

Go to the person or event that the wrong photo was attached to and you will
noticed that the photo is now missing, click on the missing photo box, on the
next screen select to look for the file yourself, go the the folder where the
right photo is located and select the correct photo.

You can then return the wrong photo to the same folder if you wish.

RE: [LegacyUG] Scan a Picture

Hi Jenny,

I had already checked the help files and found the same as you did, not much
help in there. As I still have my Legacy 7 program installed, I can just go
there and scan a photo or document, then save it into my Legacy 8 Media files,
it's a "work around" for something that should have been included in Legacy 8.

[LegacyUG] Scan a Picture

2013-12-15 Thread Leo MacDonald
I have downloaded and installed Legacy 8 Deluxe with all the latest updates, I
also have the Legacy 7 Deluxe with the latest updates.

In the Legacy 8 program I noticed that when I wish to add a new photo to a
person that has to be scanned, there is no button to press to link to my
scanner. In Legacy 7 there was a "Scan a Picture" button that would allow me to
connect to the scanner.

Is there a new way to connect Legacy 8 to the scanner, that I have missed, if
so, where?

Is there a reason why the "Scan a Picture" feature was dropped in Legacy 8?

I believe this is a step backwards and I would like to see this feature
returned in a future update.

RE: [LegacyUG] Burial Location as a Cemetery Event

2013-11-25 Thread Leo MacDonald
Hi Colette,

I have been away from my computer for a few days and when I view all the
replies to your letter I had to spend quite a while going through all 44
replies.

Everyone who replied has brought up good points as to how you should enter your
cemetery locations, each method used satisfies the specific needs for each
individual. In short everyone is right. You should choose the method that works
for you and be consistent with it.

However, none of the 44 replies have answered your question (Is there any way I
can see everyone who is buried at a certain cemetery grouped together?).

I hope that this helps,

1) Click View at the top of your screen.

2) Click Master lists.

3) Click Location.

4) Click Options.

5) Untag all records.

6) Locate the cemetery or cemeteries you wish to do a report on.

7) Click the Tag box to the right of the cemetery.

7) Click Options again.

8) Click Print.

9) Click Location Report.

10) In the "Include tab" select under "Locations to print" click "Only tagged
locations".

11) In the "What to print" section choose whatever you want in your report.

12) In the "Options" tab select what you want in your report.

13) Click the "Preview" button.

If you are satisified with the preview than click the print button.

I know that those of you who use the "Tag" feature will not want to untag all
records but this is the only way that I can get it to print just the records
that I want included in this report.

Just to add my two cents to the 44 other replies mentioned above, I also enter
the cemetery name into the Location Field.

Example:

Vis-En-Atrois British Cemetery, Haucourt, Nor-Pas-De-Calais, France

Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States

Winsloe North United Church Cemetery, Winsloe North, Lot 33, Queens County,
Prince Edward Island, Canada

I enter all these in the following format:

Cemetery: Vis-En-Atrois, Haucourt, Nor-Pas-De-Calais, France

Cemetery: Wildwood, Wilmington, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States

Cemetery: Winsloe North United Church, Winsloe North, Lot 33, Queens County,
Prince Edward Island, Canada

As a general rule I have my Master Location list set up to sort from left to
right, entering my cemeteries as listed above keeps all my cemeteries in the
same place which makes it easier and faster for me to locate the proper
cemetery. They will still sort from right to left but not in the same order as
listed above.

Example: Country, Province/State, County, Etc.

For those who wish to enter information about a certain Cemetery just edit a
Cemetery location in the Master Location List, there is a notes section
included there where you can enter whatever you wish.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Burial Location as a Cemetery Event
Date: Sat, 23 Nov 2013 13:11:51 -0600

Good Day All

Two weeks ago, I finally purchased Legacy Deluxe Edition (and about died
waiting for the password code to arrive so I could download it without the
CD!). I have had my tree on Ancestry for 13 years and did purchase Family Tree
Maker about 2 years ago so I could sync my tree but for whatever reason mine
wouldn't work after the first sync and they weren't able to resolve my problem
so I just gave up. I wanted so bad to create reports and have been on the
mailing list for Legacy for a long time, so I finally jumped in! I'm so glad I
did! Needless to say, I have lots of cleaning up to do - especially with
locations.

I have been able to answer many of my questions by searching through the
archives but I still have one issue that I haven't been able to resolve. I
would like a report of burial locations - show me everyone who is buried in
Cotton Valley Cemetery, Cotton Valley, Webster, Louisiana, USA. If I leave the
cemetery name in the buried field, then it shows up in the location report as I
want it - even if it is wrong because the location should be city,
parish/county, state, country.

I found Sherry's/Support message from 22 Nov 2010 that states she enters the
burial information as a Cemetery Event (and her words - and you can do so much
more with the Events Report). So when I changed 3 family members burial
location to a Cemetery Event and created the report, it shows up as Alpha Name
of the individuals and not grouped together by cemetery.

Is there any way I can see everyone who is buried at a certain cemetery grouped
together?

Thanks so much for any assistance you can provide to this newbie! I look
forward to many happy hours with Legacy!

RE: [LegacyUG] User's Remarks

2013-04-02 Thread leo macdonald
Hi Brian,

I have been following this tread and trying a few things to see if there may be
a work around since there is no way, at present, within Legacy to create the
document page or pages relating to the research into a family file.

I would suggest starting a word document, list everything you wish to include,
wording it to suit your desired outcome. Name your document and save it in
C:\Legacy. Now as you locate new information and wish to include it all you
need to do is edit the stored document.

When you wish to create a book report with this document information included
just go to the Start Button on your computer click My Computer>C:\Legacy>folder
(where you stored the document) highlight the stored text, click copy.

Go to the Individual that you wish to be the starting person in the report.
Click Reports>Publishing Centre>Special Text Entry>Add>Enter a Title, in the
box below the title paste the document data>save. Select the type of report you
want in the book, (I selected Descendant report)>Add.

Make sure that the Special Text Entry is at the top of the list.

Now click View before you print and see if this is what you want.

This will create a few extra steps but until Legacy adds a new feature to its
program this may help.

I run the "Test Multomedia Paths" option and get a "missing multimedia files"
list.
When I go to the person on the list, I can not find any request for the picture.
Where am I going wrong?
Thanks

Could it be possible that "supp" might be short for "supported by", I have an

RE: [LegacyUG] How to Clear the Clipboard

2011-10-14 Thread leo macdonald

Hi Betty,

When you click on the picture icon and it opens up select edit, at the bottom
of the next screen under the buttons "Crop" and "Trim" it will display where
this file is located. Example: C:\Legacy\Pictures\hdstn folder\Fred and Margret
Workman hdstn.docx

If this is where the corrected file is this is fine, if not than you may have
to redirect Legacy to the correct file. But before you attempt this make sure
that there is only one file in this folder with the same file name.

Close your Legacy program.

Go to your Start Button on your computer>click My Computer> click your C:
(drive)> click Legacy> click Pictures> click hdstn folder (or follow the path
that appeared for the file). Now scroll through your documents to find the file
"Fred and Margret Workman hdstn.docx". If there is only one by this name double
click on it to check the wording, if it does not contain the newly edited
version than the changes that you thought you had made did not take effect and
may have to be edited again.

If there are two files with the same file name than check the second file to
see if it contains the newly edited information. In this case just delete the
incorrect file and keep the correct file.

If the above does not work than you can try and locate the original file before
you changed the file name, open it up to see if it contains the the newly
edited version.

Assuming that you still have the original file with the newly edited
information and the file with the correct name but the incorrect information
than you will have to alter both. Provided that you do not have the orginal
file attached to other events.

If this is the case than make the following changes:
1) in your Fred and Margret Workman hdstn.docx rename it Frederick and Margret
Workman hdstn.docx
2) go to the original file with the correctly edited information and rename it
Fred and Margret Workman hdstn.docx

Now open your Legacy program and check to see if the correctly edited file
opens up.

If this works than you can go back in and delete the file renamed Frederick and
Margret Workman hdstn.docx,

I hope this is not too confusing and it helps.

Leo

Thanks Jenny and Bob,

They’re .docx
Re Tools, Customize Launch – not there in Legacy or Admin Tools for Windows.
Is there another step between the two?

I’ve use this same procedure to link a census page and a typed obit, no problem
– difference is that I didn’t make any changes to them. Also closed Legacy and
reopened to see if that made a diff.

Procedure to link ‘File’:

Click Pictures icon
Click File (hdstn folder opens in Word, the last place I used)
Click ‘Fred and Margret Workman hdstn.docx’
Click ‘Open’ in Word (to attach)
Legacy Description pg opens
Type ‘Headstone’ caption
Hit OK – icon labeled Headstone is in the Pic Gallery
Dbl click - didn’t close the .docx file, get ‘the hdstn file is in use, etc…’
uses the new and correct file name. Closed it
Dbl click again – got the old, unedited file that has been deleted.

Legacy has the facility to override the Windows defaults so the OP
should go to Tools>Customise>Launch and see if Wordpad is selected as
the default wordprocessor for Legacy and if so, change it to Word.

Ron,

That works great for photos attached to a person, birth, baptism, death,
funeral, marriages and events, however, for some reason the photo path attached
to sources and source detail will not set the new path unless the new path was
changed through the Picture Centre.

I have reported this to Legacy staff.

Leo,

Agreed, but since no mention was made of any file-name change, I took it that
either the file had become ‘lost’, or moved at some time, in which case finding
the location of one will apply the new path to all.

Ron and James,

When a picture that was attached to a source has been altered, (name changed -
John Smith to John Adam Smith) (File type - BMP to JPEG) or (Location -
c/leg/pic to c/mydoc/pic), by any means other then in the Legacy Picture
Center, then clicking on the question mark indicating that picture is missing,
will not renew all the links where that source was used. Each place will have
to be relinked manually.

RE: [LegacyUG] Sort Problem in Chronological View

2011-07-08 Thread leo macdonald

Hi Charles,

I never tried closing Legacy and opening it up again.

There is only one other thing that I can suggest for you to try, I have tried
it and it will work, however it may not appeal to you.

When entering your event name use the following:

A) Marriage License
B) Marriage Ceremony
C) Marriage

Hi Charles,

When you are on the marriage screen have you tried using the "set order"
buttons to move the events up or down to the order in which you want them to
appear. In my program I entered the events in the order that you gave first,
tried the Chronological view. I then used the "set order" buttons to place them
in the order that you wanted and checked the Chronological view and they were
in the proper order that you wanted.

RE: [LegacyUG] Multiple marriages each with a child and also invisible on reports

2011-07-07 Thread leo macdonald

When you are producing your report (Descendant) do you have the third husband
highlighted, if so then his wife's previous marriages will not show with their
biological children listed.

Try highlighting the wife, then run the report (Descendant), this should show
her first marriage and their biological child; her second marriage and their
biological child; her third marriage and their biological child plus the two
children from her two previous marriages, providing that you have them linked
to the third marriage, and you have them listed as biological to their mother
and adopted to her third husband. You can also change the order of the children
according to their birth dates or by her previous marriage dates when they are
listed under the third marriage.

reports

I have a family in which the wife was married 3 times and had a child by each
husband. The last husband formally adopted the 1st two children. I have them
all entered showing invisible since they are all still alive and I have the 1st
and 2nd children showing as 1/2 for the third husband. But they show up under
both the 1st and 2nd husband as well. I think I remember long ago that Legacy
had a real problem trying to handle this correctly. Did they ever figure out a
way to show this properly?

What I would like to see on reports is a correct listing of the appropriate
children under each husband/wife combination but that isn't what I am getting.
Husband 1 and wife and the 1 child; husband 2 and wife and the 2 children;
husband 3 and wife and all 3 children with the 1st two marked as adopted.

Also, when I tried to run a report to see what this mess would look like and
even thought I checked to allow all invisible to show on the report, I didn't
get anything other then the particular person I was set on.

Can anyone tell me (1) how to set up the screens so that only the appropriate
children show with that particular husband (2) if all are marked invisible,
what do I have to do to get a report using them even if I have ticked the box
for show invisible?

RE: [LegacyUG] Archived Messages

2011-06-27 Thread leo macdonald

Hi Howland,

I have noticed that all the responces to your post addressed the problems with
the archives although I think that you also wanted to learn more about the
renaming of Pictures/Files attached to sources.

The only way that I have found to change the name of a Photo or File and have
it correctly attached to all places including sources is to make the change in
picture centre.

If you were to go directly to the file folder where the photo/File is located
and make the name change, then go to the person or event where the original
photo/file was attached the origional photo/file will be missing, you can now
use the legacy locator screen to locate the new name yourself which you can
then attach to the person or event, this seems to work but, if you have the
same photo/file attached to a source you will find out later that the
photo/file is still missing from the source. You will then have to locate each
place where you used that source and reattach the photo/file, one at a time.

I hope this is not too confusing.

While taking a very successful genealogical trip, I missed some of the
responses to the topic "Renaming Pictures/Files Attached To Sources." When I
went to the archives (post Nov 21 2009) and put Renaming Pictures/Files into
the search box, I was told that there were no messages with those words. Did I
do something wrong?

[LegacyUG] Given or Alt Name

2011-05-11 Thread leo macdonald

This may have already been answered and if so I do apologize.

I have a few women in my database who have chosen later in life to become a
Sister in the church (Roman Catholic), one person whose name at birth was Mary
Ann Smith (made up). She was given by the church the title, Rev. Mother St.
Mauritius, of the Congregation de Notre Dame.

I was wondering what would be the correct was to enter this information, would
it be as follows?

Given Name: Mary Ann
Surname: Smith
Title Pre: Rev. Mother Sister Saint Mauritius (Rev. Sr. St. Mauritius)
Title Suf: C.N.D.

Or should I create an Alternate Name for her religious title?

I would like to see how others enter this type of information.

What I would suggest is to go to View > Master Lists > Location > Options > (I
untag all records) select the cemeteries you want to include and then tag them
> Print > Location Report > (there will be a pop up screen) on the Include Tab
select only tagged locations and Master Locations and who uses them, on the
Options Tab select everything that you want to include. Click the preview to

I, too would like that type of report, I've generated a report using the
Search/Find/Burial Place/name of Cemetery, it's helpful, has Surname, Given
names then 2nd column with male or female., but I'd really like to have the
dates of birth & death. I've used it to manually check to see if I have the
tombstone photo, if so I place a check mark there. I have mine listed with
spouses so this helps.

Hello All,

I have a question about generating lists, outside of the reports, from Legacy
Family Tree software.

I am planning a trip back to my hometown in about a week, 4/16/2011. I am
planning to visit several cemeteries where I have relatives buried. I want to
get pictures of their tombstones.

Here is my question. Is there a way to generate a list by town/cemetery of
anyone associated with that cemetery. My list should contain the following
information:
City/Town name
Cemetery name
Person's First Name
Person's Last name (Maiden name for the ladies)
Female's Married Last name (Husband's Last name)
Birth date
Death date

This will make it easy to visit all of the cemeteries, for each city/town, on my

list and find all inhabitants. I have sometimes overlooked markers because a
female relative will not have her maiden name listed. This is also true of
children of female relatives since the children will have the husbands last
name.

I know that Legacy Family Tree uses an MS Access database or Access style DB. I

have looked over the DB but the field names are not coded so they can easily be
identified.

Has anyone done this before and have a solution? If so, would you mind sharing
your info. For me, it is crunch time.

Thanks a million everyone.

RE: [LegacyUG] Is there a status page to see what Enhancement/suggestions have been made

2011-03-21 Thread leo macdonald

Hi Sherry,

In one way I do agree with you that the Legacy techs and Legacy staff would not
want the competition to know what they are working on for new updates or a new
version of Legacy.

However, a status page for suggested enhancements and reported bugs could be
made available to Legacy owners to access by entering their customer number,
either through their Legacy program or through the Legacy home page.

Each enhancement or bug could be listed by their reported date and not by their
priority as determined by the Legacy staff or Techs.

If the status page would allow each customer the ability to cast one vote for
each enhancement or bug then the Legacy staff and Tech's would know just how
important that enhancement or bug is to their customers. The number of votes
cast would be known only to the Legacy staff.

Once an enhancement or a bug has been made or fixed, then that item would be
removed from the list.

This status page would inform us customers of what proposed enhancements have
been made and which bugs have been reported, but would not tell us or the
competition which items the Legacy staff are presently working on.

Hi Ron,

Go to File> Backup Family File> click on Select Name and Location for data
backup> click on the down arrow in the Save in window and choose the drive that
you want.

You can also go your C:\Legacy\Data select the data file that you have just
backed up, highlight it> select copy to> select the drive F.

Hope this helps.

Hi,
Is it possible to store the .fdb file, which is in C:\Legacy\Data, to a 2nd
hard drive automatically using the Locations tab under Customize?
I want to store my main data file into 2 separate hard drives in the computer
(c and f) so that I won't lose data in the event of a c drive failure. This
needs to be done automatically without having to make a separate backup.

RE: [LegacyUG] Source Citation Glitch?

Hi Ron and Kirsten,

I was having the same problems for the past few weeks, when using a source (a
book) and the souce clipboard to document the pages in the book. When I
attached the source to the person's name it would be attached, however if I
happened to attach it a second time to the same name then I would have two
duplicate sources for the persons name.

I reported this and have received the following reply:

Are you using the Source Clipboard? If so this problem has already been
reported to us by other users and was logged for the programmers’ attention as
issue 3377: “SourceWriter sources duplicate when added repeatedly to same Event

Hi Scott,

You can go to View > Master Lists > Location > Options > Untag > All records >
not tag each cemetery address in your location screen that you want in your
report > Options > Print > Location Report > select only tagged locations and
whatever else you want to include > you can now view a preview or print the

By highlighting I meant for you to just click on each of the 25 incorrect
sources so that you can remove them (one at a time) and replace each one with
the correct source that you have edited and saved to your clipboard.

You could also copy one of those 25 to your clipboard, edit the clipboard, then
just highlight each of the 25 incorrect sources, click remove, than add the
revised clipboard.

This has greatly influenced my approach on how to record infomation also. If
you copy/paste a clipboard source to 5 events for each of 5 individuals, you
have 25 records in the database now. Fixing a typo or adding some additional
information becomes a huge task. You have to go to each event for each
individual and change the source detail.

The best way to reduce this extra work, of course, is to get the source right
the first time, and that requires discipline. However, for those who are
evolving their sourcing skills or who are new to Legacy, revisiting sources and
making updates is a way of life. I wish there was an easier way to make updates
of this nature. I wish the Legacy developers could come up with a way to make
this easier.

It is easy to copy the MSource and Detail to multiple people, BUT,
once you do, the details all become separate "items" in the data
base...there is no way to edit them all at once if you make even a
typo. A lot of work hunting down the individual details and no one
place to see where they were used. This has greatly influenced how I
record the census and other info., and how I approach
splitting/lumping. Eg., I put the census info. in an event.

On the top of your screen click View> Master Lists> Source> scroll to the
source that you want to attach a photo to and highlight it(click on it), on the
bottom of this screen you will see 4 tabs, click on the pictures tab, you will
see a square button on the far right that has pictures on it, just click on it.

A new screen will open up called Picture gallery for source> click picture in
the next screen select the correct drive, folder and picture, highlight it and

RE: [LegacyUG] Re: Legacy Database in the Cloud

2010-08-21 Thread leo macdonald

Hi Roy,

As this subject may be considered by some as off topic, it (SkyDrive) has been
discussed before.
I use it as a way to save my data files as well as my Photos and documents.
This is a good backup way to store your research away from your computer or
home.

The last Data file that I uploaded was 42.9 MB, It does take quite a while to
get it uploaded and the program does appear to freeze near the end but if you
have patience and wait it will finish uploading.

As my multimedia zip file is way too large to upload, I must upload my photo's
and documents as I attach them to my program.

I have no experence with iCloud, sorry.

Please send your questions in plain text.

I hope that this helps.

Has anyone successfully used a cloud service, like SkyDrive or iCloud, to store
their Legacy fdb? My fdb file is 36 MB and on at least three occasions I have
attempted to upload the file and I almost complete but the upload freezes when
I have only five seconds left.

Using WebDAV you can make iCloud appear as the A: drive on your computer.
Therefore, I see no reason why Legacy couldn't access the fdb file on it. That
way you should be able to run Legacy from several computers updating a single
database.

Associated question: I use Verizon MiFi2200 for access to the Internet and am
limited to 5 GB a month in combined up and download data throughput. If I
successfully got the iCloud scheme to work, would I use 36 MB each time I
accessed my Legacy database and the same amount each time I saved the database?

Thanks,

RE: [LegacyUG] Individual Report Printout Is Not Consistent How Data Is Printed

2010-07-06 Thread leo macdonald

I have checked this out using the Individual report for a deceased person and
you are correct, what happens is that if the location is longer than what can
be placed on one line then the date is placed on the first line followed by the
location on the second line.

I have also noticed that when the location is quite long and you are printing a
report on 8.5 by 11 paper and using the Portrait setting in the printer options
then part of the location will be cut off, instead of getting Prince Edward
Island, Canada, you will get Prince~, the rest is placed in "La La Land", never
to found again.

I have checked to see if there is a place in the report options, or in the main
options, to see if there is a function that I could clck that would allow me to
include word wrap, but none was available.

I will also point out that you can change the printer setup from Portrait to
Landscape which may print the full location, I would assume that this would
also depend on the length of the location.

RE: [LegacyUG] Power outage now errors and other issues

2010-05-06 Thread leo macdonald

Hi Scott and Charles,

I agree with Charles, you need to backup frequently and not just to your
computer, use DVD's, USP's, external harddrives, unline websites, whatever you
have at hand because a power surge could destroy your computer's hard drive.

What I have done to help avoid the kind of problem that you are having Scott is
that I invested in a battery powered backup, I use APC PowerChute which will
give me about 30 plus minutes of power which will allow me plenty of time to
back up my data and multimedia files and then exit my program properly.

Hi Ron and John,

I'm just thankful that it is now working and going through the process, I have
noticed and reported back to Jim at Technical Support that there is a
difference in the number of pathways which are now detected as compaired to the
number detected prior to the April 25th update.

Using my perferred starting person with the same settings that I always use, 10
closest relationships and 0 closest pathways, the program now goes through
10,000 less than before, so something has changed.

RE: [LegacyUG] v7.4.0.38 - New General Release Build - 25 April 2010

2010-04-27 Thread leo macdonald

Hi Brian,

I sent in a bug report last evening but have not heard anything so far.

Prior to the latest update, when I ran the set relationships it worked fine.

I have nearly 69,000 people in my program, I have the set selationships set at
10 Closest relationships and 0 closest paths, this will result in over 100,000
checked paths. The counter would increase by 500 at a time and this process
would take approximately 5 minutes.

I have run the set relationships several times since the update was installed
yesterday, each time the program works properly until it reaches 3500, then it
stops, hangs or freezes, whatever yuo want to call it.

I just tried it again, it went to 3500 and stopped, I waited 20 minutes and it
was still at 3500, I clicked cancel and waited 2 minutes, nothing changed, I
clicked cancel again, this time I noticed at the top of the set relationships
window the following: (Not Responding).
I waited another 2 minutes then clicked cancel, after waiting another 2 minutes
I clicked the X box on the upper right side of the set relationships window.

A new popup window with End Program came up and I clicked the End now, this
closed my Legacy program.

Thanks Ron,

That is probably what happened, when the Legacy program was hanging at 3500, I
waited for quite a while before trying to close, as the program was not
responding I had to use ctrl>alt>delete in order to close the program, then
when I reopened the Legacy program I had to resize the screen.

After update to new build the Set Relationships hangs. Tried first with Closest
Direct-line and then tried with Closest Relationship. Both times it hangs at
27500 count.

RE: [LegacyUG] Surname Case Problem

2010-04-20 Thread leo macdonald

Hi Laura,

Have you tried going to Customize>Colors, in the colors screen about half way
down on the right side you will see three buttons labeled Male, Female and
Unknown, have you tried changing the colors until you find a color that will
show up clearer when the bold type is used.

I'm using a light shade of dark blue for Male, a light shade of red for Female
and a light shade of green for Unknown. The bold type is quite a bit darker.

This works for me.

It seems that for the men only, I have this problem: It says John Smith married
someone Ann Jones…
I don’t see anywhere to change the sentence to delete that term “someone”. This
doesn’t happen if the first person mentioned is a woman.
I am doing this book on a deadline and would appreciate any help!
Thanks,

RE: [LegacyUG] Photos

2010-04-08 Thread leo macdonald

You can keep your photos in any folder, sub-folder on your computer's C drive
or any other internal hard drive as long as Legacy knows the pathway to locate
them.

You can also save them on a disk, external hard drive or USB, the only drawback
with this method might be that the device would have to be plugged into the
computed for Legacy to locate the pictures.

I like to keep my Legacy attached photo's in a separate folder from my personal
photos that are not attached to Legacy.

I used to have my pictures in different folders but decided that since Legacy
already has a folder called Photos, (and I had nothing in it),that I would copy
all my Legacy Photos there. I'm not saying that everyone should use this folder.

RE: [LegacyUG] Photos

2010-04-06 Thread leo macdonald

Hi Herman,

I do not have any experience with Vmware, Parallel or Bootcamp and I have never
used Iphoto.

I think that your problem is with Iphoto. On my computer I have a photo program
called Kodak EasyShare. When I tried to attach a photo to Legacy that was
stored in the Kodak EasyShare folder, I could not locate the folder.

I had to open my Kodak program, then copy the photo to the folder that I used
for storing my Legacy photos. Then I had no problems attaching the photo to a
person or an event.

Here is one more thing that you may want to try instead of copying your photos.

Open your Iphoto program, select the tools, select preference, (preference may
be listed under File or Edit so look around), look through the tabs, there may
be a file path listed that shows the path where your photos are located, I
located my pathway under the transfer tab. I was able to go to a person in my
Legacy program and locate the photo of him in my Kodak program.

RE: [LegacyUG] Photos

2010-04-05 Thread leo macdonald

Hi Herman,

I'm assuming that that you have Legacy installed on the C Drive on your
computer.

I would suggest that you go to your Iphotos directory, select the photo that
you want to attach to your Legacy program and copy the photo to your C
Drive>Legacy>pictures folder. If you have more than 1 photo, copy all the
photo's that you are planning to attach in Legacy.

Open your Legacy program, go the the person or event that you want to attach a
photo to, click on the photo icon to open the picture gallery, click the
picture icon, at the bottom of the next screen click the little down arrow
button and select the C Drive, in the window above this select Legacy>Pictures,
then select the photo that you want to attach, highlight it and click the OK
button. The photo will now be attached.

If your are just starting to attach photo, I would suggust that you read up on
the different photo types and sizes that will work best in legacy and also the
best form of naming your photo's in case you intend on posting your work to the
web.

I hope that this helps.

RE: [LegacyUG] Unlinking Unknown Parent(s)

2010-03-22 Thread leo macdonald

Hi Stan,

You will likely get lots of different replies to this problem, when I have
unknow parents I use a ? for the given name and also for the surname, a lot of
researchers do not like this, but its what I choose to use.

As there is no immediate fix in the works, you will have to try to come up with
a compromise that will work for you and that you are happy with.

If you have two known brothers, Frank and Robert Smith, but you do not know
their parents names, you are quite safe in deducing that their father's surname
is Smith.

Have you considered entering their father's name as (given name (Mr.) and
surname (Smith); now enter Mr. Smith's wife as give name (Mrs.) and surname
(Smith), without the ( ).

You can also give Mrs. Smith an AKA as Unknown, Unknown or ? ?, at least until
you learn their correct names.

You can play with your own combination until you find a solution that will
satisfy you.

Myself I would not unlink, if you do unlink make sure that you do a backup
first just incase there are siblings that may become disconnected.

RE: [LegacyUG] family file location problem

2010-02-25 Thread leo macdonald

Hi Judy,

The most likely place where your saved backup files are stored is in your
C/Legacy/Data.

In order to confirm if this is where you are saving them you can do the
following, with legacy open go to the top left corner of the page and click
File>backup family file>on the popup screen click on select name and location
for data backup, at the top of the next popup screen you will see that it is
saved in, with a window that will porbably say "Data" in it, on the right side
of this window is a down arrow, click on the arrow and you should be able to
see the path for your backups.

You can also check where the path of your multimedia files are located while
your in this screen.

I am having difficulty with locating my family files that have been saved. I
believe I did something incorrectly when I first installed my Legacy program
and started using it or when I made changes in trying to find my family files.
I’ve read through all of the Help menu items as well as the Legacy Users Guide
and nothing seems to address my problem. I am hoping that someone who is
somewhat of an expert in how and where the family files created with Legacy
should be stored on my computer might be able to help me out of my difficulty.
If you could tell me what your file path reads in the following instances, I
think I might be able to figure out what I’ve done wrong.

Under Help menu-General Information, Family File Information,
What does your file information read for – Family File Path?
What does your file information read for – Legacy Path?

Under Customize-Locations
What does your default location of family files read?
What does your default location for picture files read? ___

Thank you in advance for any assistance you might be able to provide.

RE: [LegacyUG] Questionable children

2010-02-23 Thread leo macdonald

I have a suggestion, attach the questionable children to the family that they
grew up living with, using the family surname if that is what they used. They
may have been adopted, a grandchild raised as their own child, who knows.

At the end of the surname use privacy brackets with a brief note like: Smith
[[may not be their biological child]], this will show up in your legacy screen,
your surname list, and when printing reports you can choose to print or not
print privacy items.

In the person's general notes under the Research tab, you could note the need
for more research or as Ron stated list it in the ToDo list.

RE: [LegacyUG] AKA on Cemeteries, Hospitals, etc.

2010-02-14 Thread leo macdonald

Hi,

Welcome to the list.

First I would enter the name of the cemetery as it was called when the person
was buried.

Second I would click on the show master location list, highlight the name of
the cemetery, click on the Edit button, in the next screen under the short
location there is a section for notes, this is where I would enter a brief
history of the cemetery like: from 1835 until 1957 this cemetery was called
Cherry ..., from 1957 until the present day the name was changed to Uniontown
Cemetery because ..., I would enter this information under both cemetery names.
By entering it here you now can see that the one cemetery has two names.

To do a report on the one cemetery with two different names, highlight the
first name of the cemetery in the location list, select options (on the right)
then tag>Highlighted records, select the second cemetery name, select
options, then tag>Highlighted records. Go to options again and select
print>Location report> choose the options you want for this report and choose
either the preview or print.

Third, you could also enter this cemetery information in the notes section
listed under the + sign to the right of the location, but you would have to add
this information for each person who was burried in the cemetery.

I hope this helps,
Leo

2010-01-26 Thread leo macdonald

Marilyn,

The picture of your mother and father, I would place in their marriage events.

If the seven sisters are your sisters then I would also place them in the
marriage events of your mother and father.

As for naming the file, everyone will probably use a different style.

For the first picture I would use John Smith and Mary (Brown) Smith.
For the second picture I would use John Smith and Mary (Brown) Smith (1).
I know that Ron will not like the spaces but I will not be posting my files to
the web.

I would enter all their names into the notes section of the events, going from
left to right.

I can click on the words "Show content", and it will now open without the pink

The message is still showing.

I do not have any attachments, pictures or links attached to the post.
I sent my post in plain text.

Does anyone else have this problem opening their own post from this site or am

[LegacyUG] Posting problems

2009-12-25 Thread leo macdonald

Once again I do apologize for the extra two posts (Christmas Wishes), this was
the first post that I have sent to the list since the site went down for a
couple of weeks.

Prior to that when I sent a reply or a new post, I would receive my reply, I
could then click on my reply and it would open.

Now that the list is working again and I have sent my first post, I went to
open it, only to find out that it would not open up. It treated my own email
post like it was junk email. I could open up all other posts and replies sent
to the list.

In my first two posts I have used copy and past to include the poem, in the
third post I transcribed the poem myself thinking that the copy & paste was
creating the problem.

I'm still not sure why I'm having this problem now because I had no problems
before the site went down. I use Hotmail, I have High Speed, Windows XP,
Internet Explorer 8. Other then the usual computer updates the only new thing
that I have done was I upgraded my Norton Internet security, maybe that is the
problem.

Has anyone else noticed a problem opening up their own post to this list since
the list went down, if not then the problem is on my end.

Thanks, Leo

[LegacyUG] Christmas Wishes

2009-12-24 Thread leo macdonald

I'm sorry about the last two posts, I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, I copied
and paste a poem, maybe that is where I went wrong. I hope that by typing the
whole letter it will work better.

I found this wonderful poem a while back and thought I'd share it with everyone
on this list. This may be a bit off "Legacy Topic", but I wanted to wish
everyone a "Merry Christmas" and a joyous holiday season.

Leo

Genealogist's Christmas Eve

'Twas the night before Christmas
When all through the house
Not a creature was stirring,
Not even my spouse.

The dining room table with clutter was spread
With pedigree charts and with letters which said...
"Too bad about the data for which you wrote;
Sank in a storm on an ill-fated boat."

Stacks of old copies of wills and such
Were proof that my work had become too much.
Our children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugarplums danced in their heads.

And I at my table was ready to drop
>From work on my album with photos to crop.
Christmas was here, and such was my lot
That presents and goodies and toys I'd forgot.

Had I not been busy with grandparents' wills,
I'd not have forgotten to shop for such thrills,
While others brought gifts to bring christmas cheers,
I'd spent time researching those birth dates and years.

While I was thus musing about my sad plight,
A strange noise on the lawn gave me such a great fright.
Away to the window I flew in a flash,
Tore open the drapes and yanked up the sash.

When what with my wondering eyes should appear,
But an overstuffed sleigh and eight small reindeer.
Up to the house top the reindeer they flew,
With a sleigh full of toys and 'ole Santa Claus, too.

And then in a twinkle, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of thirty-two hoofs.
As I drew in my head, and bumped it on the sash,
Down the cold chimney fell Santa--ker-rash!

"Dear" Santa had come from the roof in a wreck,
And tracked soot on the carpet, (I could wring his short neck!)
Spotting my face, good 'ole Santa could see
I had no Christmas spirit you'd have to agree.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work
And filled all the stockings, (I felt like a jerk).
Here was Santa, who'd brought us such gladness and joy:
When I'd been too busy for even one toy.

He spied my research on the table all spread
"A genealogist!" He cried! (My face was all red!)
"Tonight I've met many like you," Santa grinned,
As he pulled from his sack a large book he had penned.

I gazed with amusement--the cover it read
Genealogy Lines for Which You Have Plead.
"I know what it's like as a genealogy bug."
He said as he gave me a great Santa hug.

"While the elves make the sleighful of toys I now carry,
I do some research in the North Pole Library!
A special treat I am thus able to bring,
To genealogy folk who can't find a thing."

"Now off you go to your bed for a rest,
I'll clean up the house from this genealogy mess."
As I climbed up the stairs full of gladness and glee,
I looked back at Santa who'd brought much to me.

While settling in bed, I heard Santa's clear whistle,
To his team, which then rose like the down of a thistle.
And I heard him exclaim as he flew out of sight,
"Family history is fun! Merry Christmas! Goodnight!"

Goodnight!"

I found this wonderful poem a while back and thought I'd share it with everyone
on the list, this is a bit off Legacy topic, but I wanted to send my wishes to
everyone for a merry Christmas and a joyous holiday season.

Genealogist's Christmas Eve

'Twas the night before Christmas
When all through the house
Not a creature was stirring,
Not even my spouse.

The dining room table with clutter was spread
With pedigree charts and with letters which said...
"Too bad about the data for which you wrote;

Had I not been busy with grandparents' wills,
I'd not have forgotten to shop for such thrills,
While others bought gifts to bring Christmas cheers,
I'd spent time researching those birth dates and years.

Goodnight!"
