Re: [LegacyUG] Announcement from the staff

2020-02-03 Thread Michele Lewis
All is well. It had nothing to do with a Windows update per se. We updated our
Windows security certificates and that can cause antivirus programs to flag the
program as a problem because they don’t recognize the updated certificates
right away.

If you make sure that all Windows programs are shut down before you install,
and you RIGHT click the installation file and RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR chances are
your antivirus will let it pass the first time. If you are installing through
the program just make sure you have all other Windows programs shut down. This
avoids the DLL error that some were getting.

If your antivirus still gives you a warning simply add the Legacy installation
file as an exception to your antivirus.

Hi everyone

Just wondering how to update Legacy without issue. It seems there are a few
problems.

Does anyone know if Microsoft has done the update as mentioned in the email
below?

Do I need to run the update from the legacy tab. Close down anti virus and any
other windows open? Will this be ok or are there still issues.

I would appreciate guidance with this update.

Many thanks

Re: [LegacyUG] Announcement from the staff

2020-01-25 Thread CE WOOD
Firewalls and antivirus programs are not the issue when MSFT makes structural
changes.

Legacy paths are now in Documents, so it is vulnerable to changes to within
Microsoft, When Legacy was separate (version 7.5 and earlier) that was not the
case. Document paths are stored in the data drive, not the C drive, so Legacy
7.5 worked perfectly when my Documents path was recently compromised; all Ihad
to do was access backed up data, and I was good to go. Legacy versions 9 would
not open.

Michele Morrison,
When that happens and you know the program is OK, then simply reinstalling it
is often enough for the security program you use to leave it alone.

If not, here is an article from Legacy Support on the elements of Legacy that
you may need to make exclusions in your antivirus or firewall

If you cannot update from within Legacy you can always download the FREE
version of Legacy from the web site. This is the same program as the
Deluxe, it is your customer number which unlocks the deluxe features.

There is never a need to pay for the deluxe version a second time.

If you disable Data Protector in antivirus settings of
Norton, then install Legacy works just fine.  You can
then turn on Norton Data Protector after the install.

issues with anti-virus software (MS Defender?) or with connections to

Re: [LegacyUG] Announcement from the staff

2020-01-22 Thread irhocking
Tried to install on my desktop computer:

I disabled Norton but each time I attempted update/install it Blocked a .tmp
file which kept changing its name: GLB75A0, GLBD538 and GLBA55 etc.
"Suspicious process attempted to open a file protected by Data Protector -
target C:Windows\SysWOW64\GLBSINST.%$D"

This file is not on either Desktop or laptop - I have just carried out a
full virus scan - no issues.

Install Error: Could not load the DLL Library, C:\WINDOWS\USER32.DLL. The
specified module could not be found.

File is located at: C:\WINDOWS\System32

Downloaded latest Legacy free Version and had the same issue when trying to
install.

I am using Windows 10 64 bit, Updated to Windows 10 version 1909 and Legacy
Deluxe

Not good if I can't use Legacy after Jan 26, 2020.

Installed on Laptop.
Disabled Norton and tried updated on my laptop, which is also Windows 10 64
bit Updated to Windows 10 version 1809 and dll file is also located at:
C:\WINDOWS\System32 - installed no problem!!!
I have just installed Update Windows 10 version 1909 and Deluxe Legacy 9
V339 is working fine.

Spent all morning on this and still unable to install on my desktop.

Re: [LegacyUG] Announcement from the staff

2020-01-22 Thread Jack Earnshaw
Went to the Legacy web site and downloaded the update. Windows wouldn't run
it as was blocked by Windows Defender. Managed to override this by "run
anyway". Updated OK, but won't allow any access to the internet when
running. Presumably there is a setting in Windows Defender that needs to be
altered. Tried a couple of them but these haven't cured it.
Any ideas?

I can't "check for updates" as the program says I am not connected to the
internet. Same for Legacy News on the home page. I am connected and even
restarted my machine in case there was a glitch. Is there a problem at the
Legacy end?

Some anti-viruses are very aggressive when it comes to new
certificates. They won’t allow an install until a certain number of
downloads have already taken place. You will have to disable Norton just
long enough to get the download on your computer and then crank it right
 back up.

The information I read is that if you don’t update before 1/26, after that date
Legacy will not open until you do run the update.

I have downloaded the Deluxe update but it is not in my downloads folder.
Once downloaded, do I need to 'run' it? If I don't, is there anything
further I need to do.
Thank you.

Some anti-viruses are very aggressive when it comes to new certificates.
They won’t allow an install until a certain number of downloads have
already taken place. You will have to disable Norton just long enough to
get the download on your computer and then crank it right back up.

Re: [LegacyUG] Announcement from the staff

2019-05-16 Thread Gene Young

A quick search shows:
"Q: I use Gmail/Googlemail, but when I send a message to a list that I am
subscribed to I never get a copy back.

"A: There is a problem with gmail/googlemail - when you send a message to a mailing list,
any mailing list, gmail doesn't show you your own message as it comes back from the list.
Everybody else sees it, even other gmail users, but not you. And replies to your message will
be threaded with your post as you sent it, not as it came back (ie without list headers,
subject tags or footers). This is a "feature" of gmail, and there is nothing you or
the list administrator can do about it.

"If your list has archives that you can check, you can at least see whether or not
your message got posted to the list. "

Strictly a gmail issue when sending to mailing lists.

to check your options on your account. If you have not set the correct option,
you will not get an automatic copy for EVERY message you send. Check with your

If you only want a return form selected emails, try using the appropriate SMTP delivery
codes, usually "CC" (Carbon Copy).

If you send an email to this list that is "too large" the email will be
rejected and go into a holding queue. I am sent a notification and then
I go

in and clear it out. I don't read these I just delete them.

So what will cause an email to be too large?

1) If you are not sending your emails in plain text and your email has
too

much HTML coding it will be rejected
2) If you have included attachments or you have embedded images into
the

email (attachments and embedded images are a no no on the list

Why is this? We have people that are subscribed to this list that are
on
dial up (yes it still exists), limited plans/metered connections.
Keeping
the emails in plain text and with no attachments or embedded images
makes it

so that they can enjoy the mailing list without taking forever for the
emails to load or taking away from their limited connection. Also,
computer

viruses are commonly attached to image files sent via email.

If you sent a message and it never appears then I might have deleted it
because it got flagged.

If you want to have more flexibility then I invite you to join our
Facebook
Group. We have members there that don't use FB for anything else so
they
have their privacy settings ramped up and they accept no friend
requests.

Works like a charm. I know that there are some of you that say you will
never get on FB and that is fine. All I am saying is that we have to
keep
this email list on plain text with no attachments or embedded images so
that
those people who have no other choice have a forum to connect with
other

users and so that you don't inadvertently pick up a virus or malware.

If you send an email to this list that is "too large" the email will be
rejected and go into a holding queue. I am sent a notification and then I go
in and clear it out. I don't read these I just delete them.

So what will cause an email to be too large?

1) If you are not sending your emails in plain text and your email has too
much HTML coding it will be rejected
2) If you have included attachments or you have embedded images into the
email (attachments and embedded images are a no no on the list

Why is this? We have people that are subscribed to this list that are on
dial up (yes it still exists), limited plans/metered connections. Keeping
the emails in plain text and with no attachments or embedded images makes it
so that they can enjoy the mailing list without taking forever for the
emails to load or taking away from their limited connection. Also, computer
viruses are commonly attached to image files sent via email.

If you sent a message and it never appears then I might have deleted it
because it got flagged.

If you want to have more flexibility then I invite you to join our Facebook
Group. We have members there that don't use FB for anything else so they
have their privacy settings ramped up and they accept no friend requests.
Works like a charm. I know that there are some of you that say you will
never get on FB and that is fine. All I am saying is that we have to keep
this email list on plain text with no attachments or embedded images so that
those people who have no other choice have a forum to connect with other
users and so that you don't inadvertently pick up a virus or malware.

It doesn't matter which build of Legacy you are using. There error is coming

[LegacyUG] Announcement from the staff Part II

2018-06-12 Thread Michele Lewis
Here is a temporary fix you can do until we can fix it permanently. This
date error affects both Legacy FamilySearch and Legacy Charting (I only said
FamilySearch before).

Please close Legacy and delete these files and then run Legacy Family Search
again.

Legacy FamilySearch

File name:

legfsnews.txt

Located:

"C:\Users\\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Legacy FS"

Legacy Charting

file name:
