start bind-9.2.0 using uid named

2001-12-31 Thread Chang

I was following the SxS to reocmpile my bind 9 to start as user named.
I got this error:

Jan 1 14:40:40 server named[11022]: Jan 01 14:40:40.073general:
critical: couldn't open pid file '/var/run/named.pid': Permission denied
Jan 1 14:40:40 server named[11022]: Jan 01 14:40:40.073general:
critical: exiting (due to early fatal error)

what should be the permission and owners of /var/run?

You should be okay to use --force followed by "make install", but
just make sure that "make install" puts things where the rpm you

AMD CPUs are a bit hot. The top-of-the-line ones don't have the
protective circuit like P4. Chipsets that support AMD CPU contantly had
driver problem (notably VIA). Intel periodically cut prices of her CPU
(ok, it's evil, but I am a consumer).

It's better to stick with her unless you are in a hurry to get good
performance out of your hardware NOW. :) Then I may recommnd you to try
SiS 745 chipset + AMD CPU. Hope Nvidia nForce could work out like
i440BX... the 440BX is such a legendary chipset!

For you python types,

elx has a fairly ancient version (python 1.5) linked as python; you need
to reference python2 to get version 2.

I noticed this when a script failed to recognize builtin string methods.

I'm sure things like this will be better documented as the distro matures.

I think they mean that root is the main user in that it is the user that
shall control other users and what the other users have access to. Not that
you should use the system mainly as root. I think they do not mean
'main' as 'primary'. In other words, I think you lost something in their

As I understand it, in the /usr hierarchy like any other program. I know,
I know, that sucks, but that's the current drift. It does make it a
little more difficult (impossible?) to run multiple kde/gnome releases,
although the latest gnome claims to be installible and usable alongside
the previous gnome.

The version used to build the linux-kernel-binary RPM is in
/usr/src/linux-2.4.2/arch/i386/defconfig. Copy that to
/usr/src/linux/.config then run ``make oldconfig''.

If you really want to see how Caldera builds the kernel, grab the
SRPMS for it from their ftp site, then do an ``rpm -i xxx'' and
``rpm -bp /usr/src/OpenLinux/SPECS/linux.spec'' which will put
the buildable source tree under /usr/src/OpenLinux/BUILD.

Here's something for the fun holiday pastimes file. If you're feeling
proactive take a peek at some of the anti-Microsoft settlement petitions
that are swirling around the Internet, one of which is this grassroots
effort ( http://stephenadler.org/petition ).

Why should you bother? Well, as one reader observes, there's this little
legacy of Richard Nixon's administration called the Tunney Act of 1974.
It's designed to open up antitrust cases for public comment on the basis
of determining whether the corporation and the Justice Department's
proposed settlement is in the public interest. We're now inside the
60-day comment period that started on Nov. 28.

So, do you agree with the settlement? Join in the holiday fun and send an

If David can't figure it out (postfix configuration, that is), I feel
much better and less the idiot.

Yup..., likely due to its being a TP (beta). Hopefully when the 6.0 final
is released for linux, this problem will have been dealt with. Mike

Re: Netscape 6.2 Composer

2001-12-31 Thread Joel Hammer

I am using the latest version. I suspect that a lot of such crashes are due
to java, which may not be working quite right, although, I don't have such
problems with netscape 6.2. Often, a repeat attempt at such a site with
opera is successful, so, this is a sporadic but common problem for me when
I use opera.

TUSL is another Asus board that uses Intel i815e b-step for Tualatin
CPUs. The Asus' 440BX boards are very reliable and have great
performance. It was an excellent choice for building home servers.

The latest offering is the i845D chipset (forgot the model no.)
I have high expection for it and may upgrade to it when
P4 becomes cheaper. Right now, P4 is dam expensive.

Agreed, but I couldn't figure out how to configure the relaying stuff
so I could still get email. It built and installed without incident.
It is more a difficulty understanding relaying (or anti-relaying,
rather) configuration directives, which denseness on my part also
afflicts me vis-a-vis sendmail. I looked at the docs, looked at
examples, my eyes glazed over, so I returned to the evil I know

Yes, I know they have gone away from the Red Hat way of starting X, for
example. I was on crashtesters and got it even worse. I believe they have
better intentions now. I got off the list after being on for 1.5 releases
without ever getting a single cd from them to test. They sent them to the
states to post them by surface mail to Ireland because it was cheaper. All I
ever got was promises. I did get xtart out of them (intro below). They have
civilised it, but I have the old version. To get that out of them, I copied
and pasted their 'welcome' notice back to the list and really twisted a
particular arm. They tell me it's quite popular in the distro. Here it is

You're most likely right. I haven't kept up with Mandrake since the 8.0
(???) Beta which I liked better than the final product. They wouldn't
really explain much to me, even when I was on the 'cooker' list.

I have been running Mandrake for a while now, and allow me to add that IMHO,
Red Hat and Mandrake are no longer fully compatible, just alike. Elx has
probably done what Mandrake did - started with a basic Red Hat file
arrangement and then added their own work. They have differed widely in
areas, and Mandrake has added loads of 'drakes (Harddrake, diskdrake(out
yet?), drakfont, rpmdrake, XFdrake,) mainly dodges so they don't have to
explain anything. Thay have you testing for them (e.g. crashtester, 'cooker')
before they will do that.
