Could this just be a Foxit problem?

Possible but not entirely likely. Can you load a doc into LyX and then
use File->Export->PDF (pdflatex) to generate a PDF output file (in the
same directory)? If so, does it load into Foxit (or Acrobat Reader)?

Yes, this works just fine. And since I did that it
is working if I do the same from the View menu and is
calling up Acrobat even if I have not set it as the
default yet the file icon inidates Foxit and if I
click on the icon in the folder it opens in Foxit.
Very strange indeed but at least I am getting some

fast PDF's now.

If you have acroread32 set as the viewer for PDF (pdflatex), that would
explain why View->PDF (pdflatex) now calls Acrobat Reader. Otherwise,
it's probably the same phenomenon that causes your car to do strange
things until you get a mechanic to look at it, at which point it
abruptly sobers up and drives straight.

Several things can cause this (all curable). If you have MikTeX set to
automatically download packages as needed, try setting it to deny
downloads. Then delete whatever LyX installed in your user directory
(which will be C:\Documents and Settings\\Application
Data\LyX1.4.x unless your home is somewhere else) and start LyX again.

If that doesn't work, open a DOS prompt in the parent of you home
directory (C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data for most
people) and run

\python\python.exe \Resources\python.py

then try to start LyX. If that doesn't work either, post whatever
output you got in the DOS window.

If you're not sure where your home directory is, open a DOS window and
run 'set h'; the settings for HOMEDRIVE and HOMEPATH provide the answer.

Hi,

I have also had problems with "LyXTextClassList::Read: no textclasses found!"

Try 1.4.3-4 or 1.4.2 instead.

just noticed the xkeyval download in
http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/xkeyval/

will try that,

Good idea.

I got powerdot-example.lyx from the zip version v1.3
and installed it in /usr/share/lyx/templates
after texhash (local and as superuser) and configure new
this powerdot-example.lyx
gives:
Package xkeyval error 'method' undefined in families glslide, slide
and more errors probably related to that.

apt-cache search xkeyval
says
texlive-latex-recommended - TeX Live:Latex recommended packages.

does that mean I have to get and install the package xkeyval via apt-get in my
Debian distribution?

Thanks for your help, Les, and if you could give me a further advice

Does the sample presentation installed with Powerdot (powerdot-example.lyx)
work properly? If it doesn't, you probably don't have the required versions
of some packages (look carefully at the documentation). The versions of
several prerequisites distributed with even the latest versions of many Linux
distributions are too old.

If the example does work, start with that example building your presentation.
I've found it is quite easy to do things in Lyx that Powerdot does not like.
But it can priduce outstanding results.

For comparison with yours, here is the preamble from a recent presentation I
made with Powerdot:

\usepackage{listings}
\pdsetup{%
  lf=INT3.3,
  rf=Estimating Hydrocarbon Content from Amplitudes,
  logohook=c,
  logopos={.08\slidewidth,.92\slideheight},
  logocmd={\includegraphics[scale=.16]{nola76_simple.ps}}
}

As you can see, almost everything is specific to the layour of my
presentation.

You can always "roll your own". If you look at the beamer theme style
files, they mainly just load specific inner and outer themes, color
themes etc. So you could take one that's a bit gaudier than what you
have in mind and remove elements, or mix and match elements (with some
experimentation) to concoct a new one. Or, of course, you could just
make a template out of what I sent you, if in fact it's entirely to your
liking. (I'm never one to rule out the path of least resistance.)

That is a good idea, Paul. I will try to implement it.
