New To The List

2009-10-28 Thread Daniel Rowe

Hi all.

I'm sereously considering switching over to the mac and also will be
getting an iPhone when it becomes available on my network. I've been
following Apple's progress with voice-over since the beta of Tiger.
Apple are an amazing company for putting all this effort into making
their products so accessible. admittedly I believe the prices are a bit
steep, but you certainly get what you pay for I think.

I'll be getting an iMac as I'll want to use a better soundcard for music
production. I will also run windows on it so I can use sonar, or I will
just use my existing windows machine for audio work. I haven't decided
yet, although having everything on one machine will mean less clutter.
I love the wireless keyboard, but I wish it had a number pad, so I'll
order the wired one instead. Also, having to use the fn key plus the
arrow keys to act as the six pack would frustrate me.

I have a couple of questions. I had the chance to try the new macbook
with the multi-touch trackpad over the weekend and was very impressed.
After having getting used to it, I was able to read webpages in safari
fairly well using the flick method. does any of you know if that
technology will find it's way onto the iMac either through use of a
touchscreen or by a trackpad integrated into the keyboard?

Secondly, how accessible is garage band or logic with voice-over? Or am
I best sticking with sonar for the time being?

Thanks in advance,
Dannie

New to the List

2014-04-01 Thread Scott Duck
Hi everyone,

I just joined the list. I do not have a Mac. I have been a JAWS user for
about 17 years. I am getting tired of the increasing instability of JAWS
and Windows in general. I am thinking about getting a mac but, before I put
down that kind of money, I want to find out a little more about what I would
be getting into. I am familiar with the IOS version of VoiceOver. I have a
iPhone, a iPad, and two Apple TVs. I have been very impressed with the
performance and stability of those devices and it is mostly this that has
gotten me interested in the possibility of switching to the Mac. As I do
not have a Mac, I may ask some questions that seem rather obvious to all you
Mac users but please bear with me. I have a feeling that, eventually, I
will be a Mac user too.

Thanks,

Scott Duck

new to the list

2014-05-29 Thread Carlos Taylor
Hi all. My name is Carlos Taylor and I'm new to the list. I thought
I would join the list to pick up any tips and tricks of VoiceOver and
the Mac. However, I'm not entirely new to the Mac. I'm composing
this message using a 2008 iMac at work. In fact, I was in the
AppleSeed program beta testing os 10.4 tiger, so I got to see
VoiceOver in its infancy. It has really grown and matured since then.
I even purchased a Mac Mini, but it was soon made obsolete when Apple
switched to Intel processors. I'm planning to purchase a new Mac Mini
later this year. Until then, I'll keep using Macs at work whenever
possible. I'm also waiting to receive a 13-inch MacBook air to
replace a 6-year-old Windows XP based laptop for work. I oversee
technology for students and faculty with disabilities at a mid-sized
public university. I work with faculty and students using both Macs
and PCs, so I am trying to keep myself up-to-date in the Apple world.
I have been a long-time user of Window-Eyes and more recently, NVDA.
I've been an iPhone user since the summer of 2009, when Apple first
included VoiceOver on the iOS platform. Going back even further, one
of the first computers I used as a child was an apple 2e at school.
At home, we first had a commodor 64 then later got an apple 2gs. So
that's a little about me. I look forward to learning what I can from
the list.

2015-07-06 Thread Donald Goosens
Î My name is Donald and I am new to the list. I bought a used
MackBook a couple of years ago and have read some books from BookShare. I have
a wireless keyboard that I assume came with the computer. It has no numpad. It
does have command, option, control and function key. Where can I find a list
of key commands that will help me with this keyboard? Also, Can a totally
blind person effectively use the drag and drop feature with VoiceOver? I know
I have so many questions and I want to thank all of you in advance for your help

New to the List

2015-01-22 Thread Erik Heil
Hello everyone. Well, i'm the new proud owner of a iMac late 2013 model,
and have had it for almost weeks. So far, I love it, and the learning
curve is not difficult at all. However, I have a few questions, which
probably aren't too difficult. So, here goes.

1. Whatwould you recommend as an accessible IRC client? Note that I have
Adium installed, but that's not a perfect solution. If Adium reads the
messages as they come in, their's no way to control the rate of speech, or
just to bypass all queued messages and start reading the new text that is
being displayed in the channel. For channels which are not high-traffic,
this isn't a problem. However, if you have a channel which has a lot of
users sending messages, this simply does not work. I would use console
applications such as epic or other IRC clients, but their are major issues
with Voiceover reading incoming text in console-based applications. Cursor
tracking using Voiceover seems nonexistent, as well as a myriad of issues.

2. What would you recommend as a very accessible MUDD client? Preferably a
client that supports MCP, sounds, etc?
3. What do you all use to listen to Internet Radio?
4. Flash Plugin? Should I bother installing it on this machine?

Thanks for all your time. If I get enough answers, I will post a summary
document in return for your time spent researching and answering my
questions.

Erik

2015-11-29 Thread Michelle's Home emails
Hi there,

Michelle Stevens here,

I am a new Mac Book Air user. I have had my Mac for 6 months and love it.
One of the things I love about Apple is that because I am Blind I use
VoiceOver and a Braille display connected to my mac. It is very friendly
with adapted technology. I unpacked it turned it on, a friend helped me to
get started and away I went.

Ok I have had a hell of a learning curb and am still learning.

I look forward learning from you all.

Kind regards

Re: New To The List

2009-10-28 Thread Nicolai Svendsen

Hi,

I definitely don't think Apple's prices are that bed. Hell, you have
Windows laptops that cost that much, and that's basic. At least, the
prices in my country are stupidly high for a Windows computer. And
then, of course, I have to pay even more money to get a screen reader
if I don't already have one. Which is about $1000 for a JAWS pro, 250
or so bucks for the SMA update. I think Apple's prices are fairly
reasonable when you consider that part. Not to mention you need an
SMA every time a new JAWS version is released if your current
authorization doesn't cover the newest version. Besides, which Windows
computer can you actually install literally from scratch?

Just for those reasons alone, it's worth it. I realize I'm only
picking on JAWS, but I won't even mention Window-Eyes apparently
charging $39.95 for a trial license. It might not seem like much, but
I still think that's outrageous, considering it's a trial, and you
might not even like the application.

I've said my piece about pricing. :). To me, that's worth a price that
even a Windows laptop can beat in my country. Granted, you can use
NVDA on Windows, but it might not be as advanced as the commercially
available screen readers. In my opinion, VoiceOver already surpassed
those by a long-shot. That's just my opinion, though. And that is
technically a free solution, since you are not required to pay for
SMAs or any of that annoying stuff. I personally think Apple should be
commended for their commitment to accessibility to a system from the
ground up, no additional software required. No Video Intercept issues
*cough*. Concerning that last comment, I don't want to slam Windows.
Just thought I'd mention that as well, since I'm sure I'm not the only
one who has had issues with it.

Good night everybody.

Welcome, Scott. As others have said, no question is too basic - I asked some

I'd also suggest that you visit www.applevis.com. There is a page just for Mac

Re: New to the List

Hey Scott,

Welcome & don't feel alone. The reasons you stated & the, basically, yearly
upgrade fees for JAWS were what led me to switch to a mac several years ago.
I'm on my second one now, as my first was a hand-me-down from my wife. While
nothing's perfect, it's, still, quite a thrill to walk into the Apple Store or
Best Buy & start playing with the demo Macs, just like everyone else. When
you're ready to purchase, be sure to check out the refurbs that Apple offers.
Also, you can occasionally find a great deal on an open-in-box @ Best Buy. But
again, welcome to the list.

Re: new to the list

2015-07-06 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland

1. Navigate to the item you wish to drag.

2. Route your mouse pointer to the Voiceover cursor with vo+Command+F5.

3. Press vo+command+shift+spacebar to begin the drag drop process.

4. Navigate to the item where you want to drop the item you're dragging.

5. Route your mouse once again with vo+Command+F5.

6. Drop the item, thereby finnishing the process by pressing
vo+command+shift+spacebar once again.

Note that perhaps an easier way is to:

1. Locate the first item which you want to drag and drop.

2. Press vo+Comma.

3. Locate where you wish to drop the item.

4. Press vo+period.

I've found this method not to be nearly as reliable though.

Chris.

yes, we use the term vo command by pressing control and option at the same time.
By getting the command help for voice over, press VO h or in other words,
control option h.

Re: New to the List

2015-01-22 Thread Matthew Dierckens
Hello.
I can only answer two of your questions.
A good internet radi app is called Radium. It's $10 in the app store, and not
only a bunch of paid subscriptions such as SiriusXM U.S. and Canada, but Di.fm,
RadioTunes, formally Sky.FM, and many others. It also had a lot of internet
radio stations.
Honestly, flash isn't important for your machine.
A lot of websites use HTML 5, and sites like youtube have a special HTML 5
version of their website.
I apologize that I couldn't be of any further assistance.

God bless. :)

Re: New to the List

2015-01-22 Thread Grant Hardy
Hi Erik, I can answer your last two questions. I Personally use the Radio
Recorder app, as it can both listen to, and record directly from, internet
radio stations. The interface leaves quite a lot to be desired, but if you add
your most frequently listened to stations to a playlist (I’ve named mine
“favghrites”) you should be good to go and become very efficient with the app.
You should be able to figure out the interface with some trial and error, but
I’m happy to offer some tips if needed as I know it’s not the most user
friendly. Here’s the link:
https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/radio-recorder/id475736169?mt=12

If you just want to listen to internet streams, but not record them, then the
Radium app is often recommended here:
https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/radium-perfect-internet-radio/id597611879?mt=12

As for Adobe Flash Player, I wouldn’t install it until you need to. YouTube,
SoundCloud, Netflix, and many other popular sites can play their content
without flash, right out of the box.

Hello everyone. Well, i'm the new proud owner of a iMac late 2013 model, and
have had it for almost weeks. So far, I love it, and the learning curve is not
difficult at all. However, I have a few questions, which probably aren't too
difficult. So, here goes.

1. Whatwould you recommend as an accessible IRC client? Note that I have Adium
installed, but that's not a perfect solution. If Adium reads the messages as
they come in, their's no way to control the rate of speech, or just to bypass
all queued messages and start reading the new text that is being displayed in
the channel. For channels which are not high-traffic, this isn't a problem.
However, if you have a channel which has a lot of users sending messages, this
simply does not work. I would use console applications such as epic or other
IRC clients, but their are major issues with Voiceover reading incoming text in
console-based applications. Cursor tracking using Voiceover seems nonexistent,
as well as a myriad of issues.

2. What would you recommend as a very accessible MUDD client? Preferably a
client that supports MCP, sounds, etc?
3. What do you all use to listen to Internet Radio?
4. Flash Plugin? Should I bother installing it on this machine?

Thanks for all your time. If I get enough answers, I will post a summary
document in return for your time spent researching and answering my questions.

Erik

Re: New to the List

2015-01-22 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Yes, I like Radium too, although I wish since the Australian Open tennis
tournament is now on that they have the radio station for it. For that I have
to go to Tunein's website to listen to it. It would be nice if I could listen
to it outside Safari if I wanted to listen to it on my Mac but oh well.
Also, it wouldn't hurt to install flash. I know for me that I like to go on
websites that offer live TV streams for channels like ESPN 2 and such and I
haven't found websites that stream in HTML 5. I would be up for any suggestions
as to websites that offer streams in this format because I like being able to
watch stuff on my TV using my Xbox 360 and it doesn't support flash. If this is
getting off topic, then by all means, write me off list.
As for Adium, yes, I do notice that the built in speech can sometimes be
annoying. To counter this, I use an app called Growl which has it's own options
for speech. You can also silence it by pressing control if you have Voiceover
on. It's $1.99 and works well with Yosemite.

Hey guys, thank you for all the suggestions. I will definitely try those

something similar to the tune in app that is available for android it all as

Hi Eric,
Many of the Tune In radio stations can be played on the Radium app if you know

You can also import the URL that you listen to on the TUneIn website into

The Radio Recorder app is also very similar to TuneIn or Ootunes on iOS
devices. It can even record automatically in case you hear something and
realize you want to listen to it again. I’ve no idea which app offers the more
comprehensive directory as I’ve never tried Radium, but that shouldn’t be an
issue since you can always add URLs manually. Having that recording
functionality might be good for later use if you’re going to buy an app.

Here are steps on how to enter a URL manually into radium.
If you're using TuneIn's website, do a search and find the station.
Once it starts playing, press command L to open the location box.
Copy the URL.
Now, open radium.
Find the "More options" menu button, and press spacebar.

 Hello.
I can only answer two of your questions.
A good internet radi app is called Radium. It's $10 in the app store, and
not only a bunch of paid subscriptions such as SiriusXM U.S. and Canada,
but Di.fm, RadioTunes, formally Sky.FM, and many others. It also had a lot
 of internet radio stations.
Honestly, flash isn't important for your machine.
A lot of websites use HTML 5, and sites like youtube have a special HTML 5
 version of their website.
I apologize that I couldn't be of any further assistance.

 Hello.
I can only answer two of your questions.
A good internet radi app is called Radium. It's $10 in the app store,
and not only a bunch of paid subscriptions such as SiriusXM U.S. and
Canada, but Di.fm, RadioTunes, formally Sky.FM, and many others. It
also had a lot of internet radio stations.

Re: New to the List

2015-01-23 Thread Erik Heil
Hi
F first of all, I want to thank all of you for your excellent responses.
Well, I will certainly try the applications that were suggested. STD
before, recording isn't really an issue right now, but maybe in the future.
As for as an accessible MUD client, we can wait on that, as its not really
a priority at the moment. Telnet works just fine, provided I use "visually
impaired" mode, where supported. I plan to write the friendly workers at
accessibil...@apple.com in order to try and get a usable solution to the
terminal-based issues. Note that I come from a UNIX and Linux background,
so I'm am of course comfortable with various shells, as well as writing
shell scripts. I see that Voiceover has the ability to be controlled via
Apple Script, which is promising. However, in order to get cursor tracking
working, and a much better user experience within Terminal, its going to
take more than Apple Scripts. Anyways, as I said before, this is an
excellent discussion, so it's go for it.

New to the list, with lots of questions

2013-09-02 Thread Karen Poulakos

Hi,

I'm currently using a Windows pc with the Window-eyes screen reader, and am
considering switching to Mac when purchasing my next computer. I'm
wondering how the Mac experience will differ from my experience with
Window-eyes.

1. Is there a braille transcription program available? I currently use
Duxbury, with a 15 year old Index Everest embosser. I'm open to using a
different braille transcription program, as long as the cost isn't
prohibitive, but I'd like to be able to use my embosser.

2. How about OCR? I currently use Kurzweil 1000.

3. Are there any music notation programs that will work on the Mac? I
currently have not found anything that will work with Window-eyes. I would
like to find software that will allow me to scan music on to the computer,
and will either read or play the music. It would also be nice to be able
to write music notation on the computer.

4. How does the word processing experience differ from pc to Mac? I'm not
a high power user of word, but do use it for very basic documents. Is there
much difference in creating and editing documents on a Mac?

How about email? I really don't like web based email. I prefer to download
my email to Outlook Express. I like the Outlook Express layout, and the
ease in creating folders and mail rules. Can I download my email on the
Mac?
I'll probably come up with lots more questions. But, these are the ones
I've been really wondering about for quite some time.

Thanks,

Karen P

New to the list and have a few questions

2011-02-24 Thread T wood
Hey everyone,

My name is Tyler. Picked myself a macbook pro 15" core i7 about 6 months ago.
Have had nothing but good luck with it, and now that I finally have gotten used
to the thing I have a few questions.

1. How do you use dropbox? Or actually, how can't we use it? I thought there
was a way around that with the window chooser, but am I wrong now? I have it
set up on my virtual machine as of right now, though it keeps telling me it
cannot access dropbox folder even though things are being uploaded and
downloaded.

2. This is more my main question because I'm really not happy. I bought audio
highjack pro, and was able to highjack system audio, which was really my goal
all along - so I could broadcast said audio to skype. I installed soundflower,
which is required to go along with it. I eventually bought it, and soon after
that things went a bit haywire...

I updated it, (probably a bad mistake) and it told me to instal the extra
"instant on". Well ok, I figured this must be some new king of thing. Suddenly,
highjack doesn't work. If I highjack system audio I get nothing, and the person
I'm trying to demonstrate on skype isn't hearing a thing iether. Ok, fine. I
tried highjacking just one application - vlc, to be exact - and I also got
nothing. So ok. I downgraded to my previous version, and from then on have had
nothing but problems with the thing. If I try and highjack system audio now, I
lose all sounds including voiceover. If I navigate out of the window to see if
it worked (I did this multiple times, ugh) and I couldn't get back to the
highjack checkbox, all sounds were lost and when I hard booted the thing, I got
nothing until I went to system preferences, interacted with the preferenace
pain and hit so quick. Then hoped like heck I could find internal
speakers/headphones. All of this done with no speech.

I tried uninstalling audio highjack pro and soundflower completely, going as
far as removing them from .com.apple etc. So now I'm lost...what do I do from
here? Can I access soundflower somehow, did I do something wrong? I just want
this to be able to work, but I can't highjack anything, including other
programs.

3. Ok, I saw some chat about this in the archives but I'm still unclear. How
exactly do you use caffeine? I heard there were multiple ways to go about it,
but I'm still unclear on how exactly this is accomplished. I got told I could
use insomnia x by hitting vo m three times, using the trackpad to find the menu
bar for it. That, however, failed. I couldn't find anything and still can't to
this day when I open it. So this is getting rather annoying - all I want to do
is close the lid of this thing when I'm chatting on skype so I don't bash it
into something one of these days and scratch it's beautiful finish...

I would also like to take the time here to thank Rick Harmon and Mike Arrigo.
They were the main reason I made the purchas and I don't regret it in the
slightest, $2150 or not. Probably the most stable peace of technology I've ever
owned, and my windows laptop and windows netbook have a lot of dust on them.
Also, the battery life, for being a core i7, is finominal. I have a few other
questions, but I think I've rambled on enough.

thanks in advance - by the way, am always up for a chat - my contact info is
below.
skype: the_conman283
msn is the same - just with @hotmail.com at the end.

It will be very, very different, so don't go into this thinking it's just a
matter of learning a few new keystrokes. It's not better or worse overall, just
way different.

There is, but I have little experience with it and it is nothing like DBT.
However, I've heard rumors that DBT will be released for Mac sometime in the
future, so this question may be moot at some point.

There are several options, and everyone will tell you a different app or set of
apps to use. The general consensus seems to be Abbyy Fine Reader, Docuscan
Plus, or Prizmo as a somewhat distant third.

I very much wish there were, but I have not found anything. Sorry.

If it's only basic editing you need, then Text Edit, which is built into every
Mac, will do fine. It supports saving files as .txt, .rtf, and .doc, and it can
read .docx files. You can bold, underline, italicize, justify, center, change
color, and even insert lists or images. The only porlbem is that Voiceover
currently has trouble with tables in files, but we're all hoping that will be
fixed in the next major OS10 update due out in a few weeks.

The Mc's Mail app is really nice and handles multiple email accounts in a great
interface. Rules, folders and so on are all easily set up.

Keep them coming. The more you can learn beforehand, the better you can prepare
for the big change, or know that a Mac is not for you.

Re: New to the list, with lots of questions

2013-09-02 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi there
As I said in a post I wrote one time on file management, that was my biggest
problem is switching to the Mac. As an experienced computer user, it took me
about two weeks to get used to the Mac. It's not that file management is hard,
it's just enough different that I had a little trouble until I figure out how
to handle it better. So when you get there, if you get there, let us know.

Of course, everybody handles things differently, but it might be better if you
make your switch before your Windows computer is gone completely. This is
because if you have any projects that you have to get done desperately like the
next day, it will cut down on your stress level in the first two or three
weeks. However, if you think that you will tend to gravitate to your Windows
computer instead of learning, then this might not be a good thing.

I have avoided this like the plague, but it is possible to install windows on a
Macintosh computer. Some people on this list have done this, and they may want
to tell you if that's a good thing for you to do.
Regards,
Gigi

Re: New to the list, with lots of questions

2013-09-02 Thread Mary Otten
The question to ask yourself is, why am I considering switching to a Mac?

Like you, I am a K1000 user and also a Window Eyes user.I'm not a power user of
Word either, but I love the simplicity of printing directly to my Index
embosser from within Word just by accessing the Duxbury item in Word's menu and
embossing directly from there. No hassle. No 3 programs to switch among and
mess with. As was mentioned, Duxbury is apparently working on a Mac version of
their program. What will its capability and accessibility be, especially since
Word on the Mac is inaccessible? Will it work with Text Edit or Pages? Nobody
knows, but one thing we do know: it won't be free. And you already own the
Windows version.

I don't know how many of the K1000 features you take advantage of. But I can
say without doubt that there is no equivalent on the Mac side. There are
solutions, and one or another might meet your needs, depending on what those
are. But since you've already paid the money for K1000, what prompts you to
want to switch? You could consider running Windows on a Mac, either via
bootcamp, the solution I chose, or via VMWare Fusion.

I bought my Mac 4 years ago with the hope that, by the time my Windows xp
machine had to go, scanning and word processing and embossing would have
matured to the level they are on Windows for blind users. Such is not the case,
which is why I am sticking with Windows for some things. If you are not one of
the "I hate Microsoft" ideologs, who want to use a Mac because they can and
because they just plain don't like MS, then consider carefully before you
decide to take on a whole new os with its attendant learning curve.

If you're moving to a Mac because you will save money on screen readers,
consider that the machine alone is liable to cost you more than a pc, and that
you could put that savings towards the cost of keeping up your screen reader
subscription, or you could try the NVDA screen reader, which is free and quite
good for lots of things. I'm not saying Macs are bad. I'm not saying they're
not a good solution for somebody who doesn't have an investment in Windows
applications that are specialized, like K1000 and a screen reader. I'm just
suggesting that you should analyze your needs and why you are considering the
switch. I love the Apple mail program. I can't compare it with Outlook Express,
because I never used that program. Good luck with the decision.\
