[MBZ] American policy
America won the Cold War in large part because the Russians knew that American avionics would give NATO control of the air in any prospective war; that the Pershing missiles in Germany and Italy gave NATO an advantage in any prospective nuclear exchange; and that the Reagan Strategic Defense Initiative portended a new range of technologies that Russia couldn’t match. China looked on from a distance and aligned itself with the dominant technological superpower. If America wants to command China’s respect, it has to widen the technology gap, rather than watch it shrink. If China believed that its weapons systems were ineffective against American countermeasures, it would show far more caution. But the opposite is true: the technology gap is closing, and China knows it. America still has a technological lead and the resources to widen it–should it choose to do so. There is no obvious political constituency for such an effort though, and no prominent leader commited to doing so. A return to the Eisenhower-Kennedy-Reagan commitment to American technological superiority would also have enormously beneficial effects for America’s lagging productivity. But it is hard to persuade Americans that it is better to be tough than to sound tough. Re: [MBZ] Wretched SEL
I still miss Rusty (Q) He woulda found that. Yep. Of course, I would have bought the 'bad' Beru set from him then, so he'd have had a dog in that hunt anyway. alt. answer: junkyard/upull Right about now I regret having thrown away that nasty old worn-out Beru set (?) that came out of the car. I thought I was being good, throwing away old crap for a change! All I have are Bosch ends, which have the wood screw thread, not the machine screw thread of the Beru. The car is generally running a lot better now, but it's doing a new thing: The CE light is flickering on and off, a lot some times, accompanied by a stumble and an audible clicking as the vacuum switch on the RF fender actuates. No codes. Not sure what's up with that. It's intermittent, and usually does not die. I don't really have to feather the throttle off idle now, to prevent it from stalling, so that's a plus. I'm not a big fan of gas cars. None of our diesels (MB, or Dodge) have ever done anything like this. The rest, gassers all, either have pulled crap like this, or are IMHO just ticking time-bombs of fun. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Is it coming from the seams or the field? A lot of times the rubber washers on the screws rots away and water then gets in the holes where the screws go through the ribs if it is that kind. Re: [MBZ] OT tin roof
Find someone who sprays on Conklin latex roofing.Search for Conklin roof. Do you have any amish guys in the area? Amish guys go around putting on new barn roofs or repairing barn roofs. Aside from leaking at the seams and screws, wind will blow the rain up to the ridge and cause the water to run down from the ridge. Amish guys are best price/value generally. Identifying where the leaks originate is the key. Lowes sells a latex roof coating that works when you get to 3-4 coats or more. 1-2 coats will last 6-12 months, but when you get to 3-4 coats, it lasts longer. If there is flexing or expansion/contraction, then there is a spun fiber you embed in the latex to span joints/cracks, but lowes does NOT stock it. The tin roof on the barn leaks. Is there some sort of coating for this sort of thing? Anybody btdt? Re: [MBZ] Need front brake rotors for my W123 300TD
I’ve known Randy since 1989 when he had a storefront operation in Santa Barbara. Good guy, a real bulldog when it comes to finding a part that’s obscure or difficult to identify. I used to visit him when I traveled out there, usually without notice. I would just wander into the store like any customer and walk up to the counter, asking him for parts for (my) a 1979 300TD. The first time I did it he just about lost it when he saw the name on my credit card. Hee. I paid his way to Startech in the early 2000s when it was in Milwaukee. I also contributed heavily to his daughter’s college fund through my parts purchases. Randy is a really good honest businessman who does well for his customers. The Internet killed his business, however. Too much competition on price. However, he continues to amass all the NOS parts he can get his hands on. He buys up inventories, dealer stock that’s too old to rotate back to MBUSA, you name it. He keeps it all in a warehouse in Goleta outside Santa Barbara and pretty much works via email to the best of my knowledge. I would buy from him now if he sold current parts.
