Re: [MBZ] OT health insurance again
With jobs, I like to say it isnt so much what they pay you as it is what you have to do to get the money. Similarly with health insurance, the cost is only half of what you should consider. The other half is what kind of doctor you get if you get sick. With PPO, you decide where you go. With HMO, someone else decides, and you may or may not like the answer. For routine stuff it is fine. For anything complex or specialized surgical stuff, it's a different story. On Sun, Sep 29, 2019, 7:35 PM Kaleb C. Re: [MBZ] 210 door latch not catching
First, lube the latch and all moving parts.. then open and close the door several times. Might just be sticky. Then, take a sharp lead pencil and draw a line along the back of the frame latch, to make a reference line for how much you adjust it. [if you still need adjustment].. then, adjust as necessary from the line you just made. Worst case, you can always go back to the line and start over. Re: [MBZ] Vacuum lines
Donald, Some suggestions: 1.) Stop. Take a few steps back and stop trying to solve the car’s (perceived) issues collectively. Taking a shotgun approach to a car that is new and unknown to you is rarely productive. 2.) Try to make a list of the issues. Pick one and resolve it, then move to the next one on the list. If you run into a wall with something, move on to the next and circle back when others are resolved. 3.) Assume that everything is messed up. Take whatever the PO told you and forget it, as it will color your opinions regarding what is or isn’t wrong. Start clean with every issue and make no assumptions until you know they’re fact. My rule is to ignore everything the PO said and start from scratch. Rarely will you find someone as knowledgeable as yourself or this group, meaning that what you’re being told by the PO is probably wrong. Observations on my part based on things you’ve said of late: Clean out the boost line from the back of the intake manifold to the vacuum control valve on the firewall and to the IP. I’m betting your lack of power is the classic “no boost” scenario due to a clogged boost line. Find a diagram for the switchover valves and get that sorted. Plug the EGR line with a BB or golf tee. Replace the worn out switchover valve levers that I’m betting are worn away to nothing. They’re pocket change from the dealer. Forget everything the PO told you about the ACC. Check the blower fuse first. It’s undersized and prone to fail. Mercedes has a retrofit kit to relocate the fuse out of the fuse box and use a strip fuse of a higher amperage. I can get the number if you can’t find it in the archives - I’ve posted it here a couple of times, cost is around $20 from the dealer. With the fuse sorted, check the system for operation. Some good suggestions on the blower motor in the event it needs brushes. The ACC controller rarely fails, ignore it for now. Your push button unit may need to be resoldered, if you’re handy with a soldering iron it’s an easy fix. Back to vacuum... There is a rather lengthy dissertation I wrote for Richarde’s mbz.org on adjusting and troubleshooting the vacuum system with the IP and transmission, I.e., modulator adjustment. If you can’t find it I’ll dig up a copy. Small steps, man. It’s like eating an elephant - lots and lots of small bites. -D > On Oct 1, 2019, at 1:18 PM, Curt Raymond via Mercedes > wrote: > > You can't drive it too hard, or rather if you do what broke was about to fail > anyway. You can't drive it too hard, or rather if you do what broke was about to fail anyway. A 240D has to be driven 100% almost all of the time, a 300D turbo is babied by comparison. I suspect your accelerator pedal isn't making the rack travel all the way. I had that happen to my second 240D, theres a dingus that takes the back and forth motion from the firewall and makes it up and down motion at the rack that had gotten loose and was only moving about halfway. I did find one shop in Memphis that has been around forever that I think will work on it. Donald H. Snook On Oct 1, 2019, at 9:13 AM, Jim Cathey wrote: I’m wondering about the lack of power. I understand a vacuum leak could have an effect. But, when I try the CCU (push button unit) nothing happens. Wouldn’t that be more likely to be related to the switch? Keep in mind (and I’m just relying on the honesty of the seller), the previous owner said he was told he could “hot-wire” the blower to get it to work. So, I think he is saying that the failure is in the switch because the solder traces have failed therefore nothing is telling the blower to come on. Is that completely wrong? Donald H. Re: [MBZ] Vacuum lines
It’s a 300D. It’s slow. But, not nearly as bad a 240D. The one time I drove one of those it felt dangerously slow. Keep in mind, the last MB diesel I have driven was my former 124 300D 2.5T and I remember thinking back then it was a lot faster then my previous 123 diesel. So, maybe what I am experiencing is normal. The thing I keep wondering is if the lack of black smoke means this is tuned perfectly (and thus no wasted fuel) or is something wrong and it is not getting enough fuel which would mean the reason there is no smoke is because it is running TOO lean. That might explain low power and no smoke. One potential wrinkle I experienced last night was that the car seemed to run tougher than it did when I drove it back from Texas. I didn’t baby it. I wanted to see what it could do. I know the old advice is to drive it like you stole it. But, I’m hoping I didn’t drive it a little too hard. Re: [MBZ] OT electric motor capacitors
buy the physically bigger cap and stop by a local motor shop. Ask them if you can pick through their pile of scrap to find a cover that will fit. If no luck there, fasten it to the motor and hook up the wires. Use shrink insulation and seal the motor as you planned. I've seen worse in the real world. Sometimes the cap just is left dangling by the wires. It is quite possible the mfgr shaved insulation inside the old cap to make it smaller. Assuming the larger one has more insulation, it should last longer. Randy Bennell via Mercedes wrote on 10/1/19 10:29 AM: Way off topic here but some of you folks appear to know much more about various things than I do, so I am going to tell you a story and seek advice. Sunday afternoon, I was ripping some 5/8 plywood when my table saw started to smell like melted plastic. I cannot say I heard anything unusual but with the dust collector howling and ear muffs on, I likely wouldn't. The saw is a 10" Delta hybrid or whatever they called them. It has a cabinet that goes to the floor but is not the Unisaw. The motor is inside the cabinet so one must use a dust collector or plan on killing the motor as it is not totally sealed. It is a Chinese made saw and motor - probably 10 to 15 years old. Old enough that it predates Delta's demise and rebirth in recent years but not old enough to be made in North America. I shut the saw down and opened the side hatch. The motor is 1 3/4 HP and has 2 housings for capacitors. A longer and a shorter. The longer one felt fine and the shorter one felt hot. Based upon my internet research, it appears that the shorter one is the run capacitor and the longer one is the start capacitor. After supper, I removed the motor, which is a miserable job. The motor is heavy and the bracket is spring loaded to hold it down to keep tension on the drive belt. My primary concern was not so much getting it out but trying to set myself up so it would be easier to put it back in. I had some pieces of 1 1/2 blue foam insulation and I used those to block the motor up. I think I will be able to get the motor back against the bracket and get a couple of bolts started when I put it back. Once I pulled it out and removed the housing over the shorter capacitor it was obvious that the capacitor had burned out. The plastic cap over the end was melted along with the wires. So, at a minimum, I need a capacitor. It is 35 MFD 250V so nothing too odd. My problem has been that it is not easy to find one small enough to fit back under the housing. There are lots of them available but they mostly are larger. I have tracked down what appears to be the right one but I have only found it available by ordering it from China. Unless I want to spring for expensive shipping it may take a couple of weeks or more to get it. My initial thought was that I needed to find one that would permit me to put it back inside the metal cover - mostly because it operates in a dusty environment and I want to keep the motor sealed as much as it was intended to be. However, I am starting to think that there is no real reason why I need to do that. I can seal the opening where the wires go into the motor housing with a bit of silicon caulking and shrink wrap the connections to the capacitor. The housing protected the capacitor from impact damage and prevented careless folks from touching the contacts but since the motor is normally inaccessible unless one deliberately opens the hatch, I doubt that the protective bump is truly necessary. I can pretty readily strap the capacitor to the motor housing. Anyone think that is a bad idea? If so, why? Re: [MBZ] OT electric motor capacitors
That will be OK, cut a plastic bottle or something and tape it over the cap to cover it and keep from getting zapped/dusty/etc. Can you find the part on Delta site or parts catalog? There are some sites that have parts for older woodworking equipment too if you want to try find something similar, but any matching type cap should work. --FT On 10/1/19 11:29 AM, Randy Bennell via Mercedes wrote: Way off topic here but some of you folks appear to know much more about various things than I do, so I am going to tell you a story and seek advice.
