There was a hemi cuda that sold here at auction a few years ago. Did not get above $800k and was in fine shape for my eyes. Plain old Murphy auction vehicle sale. Three yard guys were parked in the building with two other cars to baby sit it while the rabble wandered about the place. I think a Ferrari was also on the block that day clay On 5 Sep 2007, at 08:45, Rick Knoble wrote: I've done 140 in a '70 hemi Cuda convertible, whoa Nellie! That was a ride. I'll say. Re: [MBZ] Decent 6.9 in Atlanta (now GTO)
It aint braggin if ya done it! There are those who sit around and read specs, then there are those of us who dig in and do it. As I said, 2.1:1 rear, huge carb , fancy ignition and a nice cam, all set up for high RPM. I was working in an engine shop at the time and we did a lot of high speed engines ( got lots of practice on boat engines for rich idiots, they would come in and spend 4-5 grand on a custom engine for a speed boat, then take it out to the lake, do a powerslide in front of a bunch of girls to impress them, and then the wake would wash over the back of the hull and straight into the velocity stack intake and blow them sky high.. by tuesday, they'd have another bare block in the shop for another 4-5 grand treatment, then they'd go out and do it again...must be nice to have more money then brains ). I had also learned when to trust the factory engineers, and they did a heck of a job on those things. It really took very little. It's not hard to make cars go really fast, you just have to make them wind out, but you do sacrifice quick takeoffs. I had a '67 El Camino I was playing with at one time that I really rigged to scream with a 350 small block ( with nothing stock in it but the crank)and a th 350 behind it ( along with fitting the front seats, dash and center console out of a '72 Chevelle in it dyed black and white , It looked pretty cool too :-), the thing would do 120mph in second gear. I have no idea how fast that thing could go in third, I never got around to working the suspension out to handle more than 150 before moving on to another project. Had two different carbs for it, the high speed holley wasn't very streetable, so I had a smaller AFB for it and mounted the carb with aircraft push pin quick disconnects so I could swap carbs in about a minute to run the thing. The guy who bought it promptly wrapped it around a tree first day out. The old 'merican stuff was usually way overbuilt and could be made to do much more with very little effort. Ah for the days before computer designing. Drag and weight only slow you down if you haven't got enough power. Its a good thing I grew out of all that. Now I drive around in a bunch of old diesels.Go figure. --Robert [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: You must be kidding, even with 360hp the 68 GTO could never go that fast. Re: [MBZ] Decent 6.9 in Atlanta (now GTO)
I have a vague recollection that one of the car mags - HotRod or Car Craft type publication - got a newer Firebird to around 200 mph but it took a whole lot of messaging and effort. It is not as easy as it might appear. Isn't there some sort of on road race accross the dessert in Nevada - legal or otherwise - where folks just drive flat out. I think that is what the magazine was participating in. Drag and weight only slow you down if you haven't got enough power. I agree with that! I had a 1973 Pontiac Grand Am with a 400 4 barrel when I was 17. Now those that don't know a Grand Am back in the day was a cool car, it was not a small little commuter car built cheaply to sell to rental companies. It was a big coupe with a monster engine. Without any modifications, the 400 was faster than the 455 found in the Trans Am (although I wanted - and still want - a 1979 TA with the 6.6 engine and the crazy chicken on the hood. That old Grand Am would go 150 without much trouble - except it took FOREVER to slow down. I loved that old car. GM was preparing for the Bicentennial and many of the grand am came in White with a red interior. It had red and blue pinstriping. When that four barrel opened up you could hear the gas sucking into that engine and you better hold on. The 400 had loads of torque and it could make that two ton boat really fly. Donald H. Re: [MBZ] Decent 6.9 in Atlanta (now GTO)
I will tell a very true but long GTO story. I had a 1968 4 speed GTO Convertible, no power steering or brakes. I was a freshman at Young Harris College in the mountains of North Georgia. 2nd night there I took 3 other guys I had known for 2 whole days out for a ride. Well, we were going 70 MPH on a road I had never driven and I decided to step on the gas.bad idea. We went to 90 MPH faster than you can say oh . Best of all the road bent 90 degrees. Well, I am still here today, and so are my 3 ex friends but let me tell you, what a ride! we flew off a ledge about 7 to 8 feet high, right into a small corn field and bounced about 10 times without flipping (the top was down). As came to a stop, we got out and surveyed the situation. No way to drive up an 8 foot embankment, so we walked through the field until we saw a driveway about 100 yards away. I ran back to the car and drove it to the driveway smashing corn the entire time. Pulled back onto the road, drove back to school at 35 MPH and took stock when we got back. There was Silver Queen everywhere it could be in the suspension. I went back the next day to survey the scene and there was this little old farmer standing in the field scratching his head wondering what type of UFO landed in his corn! It was hoot. But the 3 guys never rode with me again, I wonder why? Rusty Cullens BuyMBparts, Inc. Re: [MBZ] Decent 6.9 in Atlanta (now GTO)
My first vision of carnage was GTO related One of my uncle's buds had a'68 GTO and another had a Grabber Green '70 Boss 429. Jack had the Mustang. He used to tape a fifty cent piece to the dash and tell me, as a 10 year old, if I could grab the fifty cent piece while he was mashing the foot feed to the floor, I could keep the moneyI never reached it. Anywho...they decided to race one afternoon. My grandparents and I happened by about 10 minutes after the race was over. Mustang Jack plowed into a railroad bridge trestle (car split in two, Jack dead) and the GTO was on it's top after having rolled probably a dozen times. The two passengers of GTO were in the ditch contorted in ways human bodies do not normally bend. One dead, one nearly. My granddad made me look. That was quite the learning for me. Maybe that's why I drive a 30 year old solid safe diesel that can hardly get out of its own way. How many rpms is that with a 4:10 axle (or even a 3.73) and 1:1 top gear? If tires are 30, that's a little less than 22mph per 1000 rpm at 4.10:1. At 3.21:1 it would be nearly 28mph, or about 139 mph at 5000rpm. I don't think I ever saw a muscle car with a 3.21 final drive. These cars had the power to go 120-140, but not always the gearing. A friend of mine had a race prepped 442 that would do 12 sec 1/4 mi. I don't think that car ever saw over 125 mph, even when he put a 4sp in it and drove it on the road. The Road Runner Superbird and Charger Daytona race cars had CD in the 0.28 range, and could do about 200 flat, but I'd be surprised if the homologation versions did over much over 160. Your typical supercar (GTO, 'Cuda, etc) was probably closer to 0.5 CD, and that took a lot off the top speed potential. Not a bad looking car, but that silly little story included from the star is pure fiction. Anyone who's ever owned a '68 GTO ( present company included ) knows that 120 is just a nice mild cruising speed, those beasts don't even start breathing hard till around 180. Which takes about what, 500 HP? How much more does a goat have? Wouldn't have thought it would have quite had that. Certainly the 6.9 doesn't. Given a choice, I'd still take a 6.9, thank you very much. Unless I was going to sell it for cash. Then I'd want the goat! -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] Decent 6.9 in Atlanta
Try 2.21:1 rear end. That's what mine had. A bunch came out of the factory that way. A waste of time to run a 1/4 mile with them, but they were made to open up and run. Most came with lower rears, but not much .I never saw a stock goat that couldn't do 160 no problem Most came out of the factory geared to run, people who wanted street racers generally switched them to lower sets later, although there was almost endless options for the things. -Robert Mitch Haley wrote: Robert Tara Ludwick wrote: Not a bad looking car, but that silly little story included from the star is pure fiction. Re: [MBZ] Decent 6.9 in Atlanta
The 6.9 has one serious Achilles heel - the engine produces so much torque that you can break the differential. And the 6.9 has a special differential - it's not likely that you will find one in your local junkyard. This, plus the owner added nitrous to the engine, possibly maling the problem worse, would make me look hard at the differential before buying the car. Also, Mercedes made another 4 door sedan that will stomp a GTO, it's a 300SEL 6.3. I'd go for the 6.3 over the 6.9 any day. You did 220 mph in a GTO? Geez, almost fast enough to catch all those fish that got away. :-) hee hee Ed 300E On 01/09/07, Robert Tara Ludwick [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Not a bad looking car, but that silly little story included from the star is pure fiction. We used to have a lot of fun with that car out on a dry lake. 220mph+ is an interesting feeling :-) If they passed a GTO at 120 it's because the guy in the goat didn't care, not because the 6.9 is some super car. I wonder why he included that little snippet in his ad? I guess it didn't help him sell the thing. -Robert John Robbins wrote: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=300145019267 Its already ended, but I bet you could get in touch with him and make an off eBay offer if you're nearby.
