[MBZ] SEC -- 500 or 560?

2016-07-30 Thread clay via Mercedes
I am feeling ambivalent about getting a C107 project, and found two SEC that
might fit the bill. One is the older, the other an 87. Is the post facelift a
better project, or would the earlier SEC be just as fulfilling to play with? I
am going to assume neither one has functional AC. What other issues would I be
wanting to keep an eye out for? Lambo doors are a given, down the road. For
now I am thinking I would deck it out in Polizei livery, lights and all.
Probably rattle can spray and there are enough of the w126 at yards that I
could find the standard parts.

Not sure about the engine - but it;s one of the prettiest models of MB I;ve
seen. Have wanted one for a long time --

There was a problem with the timing chain sprocket problem - came with
single gear and was updated to double row sprocket - not sure if that
applies to this model.

If it were me, and I was sure the rust was minor (be sure it's minor rust) -
and the rust can be reached with the stuff needed to stop it, i.e., not
hidden in the guts, then it might be workable.

Just got back from checking out an '83 SEC. Car has sat for 3 years, has
132,000 kms. Body has some paint issues, and I see a little bondo where
 the
paint is pealing over on rear arch. Will need new brakes, and I'm sure
several other things to sort it out. It's a 380, not a 500. Guy is
 asking
$1500. Says, if the engine won't start, he'll give me my money back.

 Could be a fun project??

Re: [MBZ] SEC, any thoughts???

2008-05-17 Thread E M
Hi Larry,

As always, thanks for your thoughts and input. One area of rust that does
concern me a little, is on the lower rear bit, in front of the rear wheel.
Like the lower sill, which usually has that textured paint, as on our
W124s. As always, it tends to go deeper than the outside would indicate,
but I'm not 100% of how it's constructed, ie, double skin. I'm going back
for another look now. I've always loved the SECs too, but I want to use my
head. The market is so soft now, by the time I put this car right, I could
probably just spend a little more and get an original one. I just have to
be honest about the work involved. I tend to be one that ends up digger
deeper and always making them bigger projects than first planned!! ;-)

I'll keep you updated Larry.

Thanks again.

Yeah, nice V-8 126s and 140s are going for next to nothing now, if the
prices on Craigslist are any indicator. Definitely a buyer's market,
so it's worth waiting for the right one. I was seriously thinking
about getting a 500SEL then decided I can't really justify another
fun car (and certainly don't want to do my commute (30 mi each way)
in something that gets 10 mpg downhill with a tailwind).
