Re: [MBZ] 123 fenders - replace or restore?

2012-06-01 Thread G Mann
At $308. each, that only accounts for 3 shop hours at a decent body shop. 3
hrs to repair, to paint standard, a rusty fender, is on the low side. Plus,
when you are done, it's still a rusty fender under the paint.

Even with shipping costs, the $308 figure, IMHO, would be the better
investment. You start with a clean, no rust, set of fenders, then paint
them off the car. Undercoat or preserve the back side and have a much nicer
end result.

I agree completely. Spend an afternoon giving the inside of the new fender a
POR15 treatment before going to the body shop and you'll be way ahead.

Even rust free on a used fender doesn't mean won't bubble with rust

Big rust would require lots of shop time to fix, and sourcing fresh fender
might be less costly. PnP fender should be very inexpensive. Still lots of
shop time to prep for paint and mounting. Probably same a for a new made
fender. Maaco paint job with fix would be least expensive, but might look like
crap.

Probably best to ask around for quotes to repair and paint. You are under no
obligation to use any shop. See what they tell you about going either way. I
would want my shop to remove the old fender to do any rust repair and repaint.
Then I would end up with needing a whole paint over for the car.

If rust can be repaired properly without removing fender then I'd opt for that.
Fender removal means removal of that undercoating stuff which is a job in

just a little over $100 each.

123 now being classic center status may have changed the prices. If

Re: [MBZ] 123 fenders - replace or restore?

2012-05-31 Thread G. M. Brown

Since I intend for my '84 300D to be my last car and last me the rest of my
days, I replaced the RF LR fenders in '09 after finding rust that I was
convinced would spread. I've had rust repaired in the past by reputable
establishments only for rust to reappear a couple years later. Even if I need
to replace the LF RR fenders at some point in the future, it's worth it to
me.

Re: [MBZ] 123 fenders - replace or restore?

2012-05-31 Thread Allan Streib
If I had the time and motivation, I'd try removing the fenders, using
the electrolytic method to get rid of the rust, then repair or fill as
needed.

Wire brushing and topical rust removers do not approach what I've seen
the electrolytic conversion do. Instructions are somewhere on Jim
Cathey's website.

2012-05-31 Thread Dimitri Seretakis
It those establishments were autobody shops then being reputable will not
change anything. Body shops have no idea how to correctly repair rust. It needs
to be taken to a high end restoration shop. Any other alternative besides doing
it yourself in a skilled manner will surely lead to disappointing results.
