That's okay. I only noticed because I clicked the link and got This Wiki
topic does not exist yet. I have a few entries I should make myself, but
haven't gotten around to it yet.

You may have noticed that I didn't do so well typing Compatibility in my
reply either 8^).

Know what I'd like to see? A script or wizard that would extract all known
hardware info and bring up a list for you to check off worked first time,
worked with tweaking (and a place to describe the tweak), or couldn't get
it working, and maybe a don't know (not ideal, but it's bound to come up),
then send the completed list to a database somewhere that is publicly
queryable. Right now it's too much work to report all the hardware, so most
people don't bother. Of course, nowadays most of the hardware just works, so
it's less of an issue.

Agreed - it would be really nice. Even better would be one that allowed the
distro information to be included, so that it could become more widely
useful. People who absolutely need a particular piece of less-common
hardware could then see which distro was the best bet for it.

Of course, nowadays most of the
hardware just works, so it's less of an issue.

True. Still, for those considering the change, or for buying new hardware, it
would be extremely helpful. The problem is finding someone with the skills
to do it and sufficient time. It must be possible to collect info from
either kcontrol or harddrake and put it into a form, but there would have to
be a central database, hosted by who? And of course the interface to upload
the data. I wish I had the skills to try it, though.

This little line is from one of the k3b support sites:

dvd+rw-tools - The DVD+RW-Tools are used to burn and format DVD+R(W) and
DVD-R(W) media. For DVD+R Double Layer burning version = 5.20.4.10.8 is
 required.

I will assume that this means that DL disks are supported by k3b as long as
your dvd+rw tools are new enough.

Looking forward to the update when you've tested, Bryan

The Sony DRU-710A works fine on MDK 10.1 and burns double layer no
problem with k3b. Takes about 45 minutes to burn 8.5 Gig.

Could you put an entry into the HardwareCompatibility page, Mike? And perhaps
add Bryan's bit about the tools version being important?

How does one do that? The page I looked at was
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/hardware.php3. I did a search for any
compatible dvd writer. It only found 3!

I did not see an obvious place to make an entry.

According to posts, double layer media is supported by Linux and K3B. I have
not burned to a double layer disk since they are still so expensive. I was
thinking of ordering a couple of disks just to try one out though, because I
was curious.

When I do, I will update you.

I am happy with my LG 4120 12x dually.

Also surprisingly happy with my (unknown previously to me brand) Benq
single burner (1610) - so much so that I would seriously look at
upgrading to Benq again when needed.

Never burned a dually though with them.

YMMV
