Thanks for the hint and the code. While your example runs nicely, if I
run 15 pages from
my book it produces log file entries not unlike in your example, but
then crashes with the
errors given below.
Since apart from this the book works just fine, and I can always add
the references by hand
in the end, there is no need to pursue this too long. I am sure I have
messed up a few definitions
by copying from examples I did not fully understand.

[NTG-context] start/end pages in ToC
Our journal is currently in the process of moving to continuous publication
of items in a given volume as they are ready. This entails re-jigging the
ToC so that it now includes the start and end page numbers of each item. So
far, I have everything pretty much in the right place, but for the page
numbers I am getting only “??”. I am not sure why this is happening and
would be grateful if someone could tell me why or point me to
documentation that explains the problem and how to solve it.

Hi,
Denis’ article in the CG journal uses the publications module with a
.bib database. With ConTeXt LMTX 2022.05.11 all was well, with the
current version (2022.07.27) it can’t find the entries of the database:

I realize that the above "fix" does not truly solve the problem, but to
make the default footnote style citation of SBL style work, I need to
understand what is going on between the footnote environment and the setup
containing it. I asked a similar question last year in the "Why are
endnotes not working with ConTeXt-SBL?" thread (
https://www.mail-archive.com/ntg-context@ntg.nl/msg100920.html), but no one
ever got back to me on it. The issues may be related.
One final note: ideally, I would just define footnote citations to follow
the inline style, similar to how publ-imp-chicago.mkvi defines footnote
citations to follow the entry style. The definition to do this is already
in place in publ-imp-sbl.mkvi:

Unfortunately, this definition does nothing, since the btx:cite:footnote
setup in publ-imp-cite.mkvi is hardcoded to use the "entry" setup:

This is why I needed to override the footnote citation style in

I do not think that is an option for me.
The book is bilingual, with Arabic and English. There are places where I
want the chapter, section, and subsection titles to be bilingual as well,
with English on the left and Arabic on the right. I accomplish this using
the following…

contents just for chapters, and a detailed table of contents in the back
matter.
Everything worked fine -- including the PDF bookmarks and table of contents
-- until I started using \writetolist to manually inject additional
sections and subsections into their respective lists. The manually injected
entries do show up (as I expected), but their corresponding PDF bookmarks
get repeated (not what I expected).

[NTG-context] conditional formatting, checking the context (SOLVED)
Hi,
in the example below I’m using a custom highlighting macro in titles.
Now I don’t want this highlighting in the ToC or in bookmarks (in my real world
example the changes affect bookmarks, not in the MWE).
I know I can use the list= and bookmark= keys of \startchapter, but since the
text is always the same for all, I’d like to check within the \SPECIAL macro if
we’re within the chapter title or within a list or bookmarks.
In preparing the MWE and this message I found a solution with the *chapter
system mode.
Wanted to share anyway ;)

Thanks for the suggestion, but I already had \setupinteraction[state=start]
set. (Note 'interaction' - no 's')

From that I was able to add the following to my document setup:
\definehead [Bookmark] [title]

]
\setupinteraction[state=start]
\setupinteractionscreen[option=bookmark]
\placebookmarks[chapter,heading,Bookmark][chapter][force=yes]
And then in the text where I want each extra bookmark to appear I use:
\Bookmark[title={The text of the bookmark}]
This works but is a bit of a kludge because it assumes that you aren't using
'title' sections in your document already. If you are then they will all appear
in the PDF bookmarks.
Also note that the bookmark is inserted at the chapter/title level. If you want
a sub-bookmark then you need to add another custom heading, viz:
\definehead [SubBookmark] [subject]
[ placehead=empty,
before={},
after={},
]
and add it into the \placebookmarks list:
\placebookmarks[chapter,heading,Bookmark,SubBookmark][chapter][force=yes]
and invoke it using:
\SubBookmark[title={A sub-bookmark}]
In the PDF, this will be nested under the previous higher-level bookmark.
Given that this is a kludge, and that the \bookmark command doesn't seem to
work at all, perhaps it can be resurrected into a new form, something like:
\bookmark[n][focus]{Text}
- n is the level 1, 2, 3 etc
- (optional) focus overrides \setupinteraction (assuming PDF allows it)
- text is the text to show
and have this insert a bookmark at that point, regardless of whatever the
heading mechanism is doing?

Follow up,
I'm trying to also ignore commands when setting PDF metadata:
The wiki gives these examples:
\appendtoks

\to \simplifiedcommands
And:

\let\quad\space
\to \simplifiedcommands
So, I just added this to my environment file:
\appendtoks
\def\em{\space}
\to \simplifiedcommands
But, the \em still shows up in the PDF metadata. Is this still the
recommended way to do this? Or is there an easier way? I guess, even if
this would remove the \em, that would still leave the braces in place.
(I'd prefer to remove them as well, but I've no idea how that could work.)

[NTG-context] Some interaction questions
Hi,
I have a few more question regarding interaction/PDF bookmarks and PDF
links:
- How can you ignore Commands in bookmarks? Like when instead of "The
concept of {\em bookmarks}", I'd prefer to just have "The concept of
bookmarks". I know I can just use something like
\startchapter[title=The concept of {\em bookmarks},
bookmark=The concept of bookmarks]
But is there an setting for that?
- When clicking on a link, the focus switches to the target page. Is it
possible to go to the line of the target? (Would be nice for switching
between notes and text. Otherwise linking between notes and note markers
would be quite pointless.)

Should be \placebookmarks[chapter,section]. Move it in front of \starttext.
But that still doesn’t set chapter bookmarks - strange.

as for 6.8-1, did you set MIME type of the attached file (such as in
"type={application/pdf}")?
Oddly, the bookmarks do not appear either way under MkIV, and they do
not appear when the attachment is visible under LMTX. The bookmarks do
appear with a hidden attachment under LMTX.
As far as I understand, only LMTX will receive regular updates now. (But
Hans knows better 😅.)
I get both visible attachments and bookmarks in LMTX (latest and
previous latest [“latest” is the new beta]).
Could you provide a minimal sample that shows the issue?

*Mime type*
* You can see that the mime type is set in the ConTeXt file and it
appears in the resulting pdf, although not knowing enough about the
pdf file structure I do not know if it appears correctly.
*Validation*
* With the pin hidden, VeraPDF 1.14.8 complains about two occurrences
of clause 6.8 test 1 failure. With the pin exposed, it complains
about one occurrence of clause 6.8 test 1 failure and one occurrence
of clause 6.3.3 test 1 failure (appearance dictionary).
* With the pin hidden, pdf-online.com declares the valid. With the

in the /Params dictionary?
This is the way to avoid that Acrobat displays no uncompressed size but

I second this request. The bookmark is taking on the file= name, and not
that of name=. It would be better to take the name=, or to add a
bookmark= key.
Well, this is why before we didn't have an entry but validators then
complain so we havbe a chicken - egg issue here. Personally I think it's
an acrobat bug (maybe in the meantime turned feature) as it should check
for atttachments registered at the document level and annotation level.
There are similar contradictions wrt named icons and appearance streams.
So ... I wait with changing something till Peter tells me what to do as
he's in charge of validation issues.

I accidentally discovered that file attachment generates two entries in
Acrobat, such as this sample:

This happens with latest beta (from 2019.12.17) in both MkIV and MkXL.

warns about the use of both /EmbeddedFiles and /FileAttachment
annotations. Acrobat seems to be the problematic software.
I think it is fine to have /FileAttachment annotations for
"method=normal" and /EmbeddedFiles for "method=hidden".
Would be also possible that the entries in /Embeddedfiles use the value
for "name" instead of "file" (when specified)?
And for the /EmbeddedFile annotation, would it be possible to add the
value for /Size entry (uncompressed size of the file in bytes,
https://www.adobe.com/content/dam/acom/en/devnet/pdf/PDF32000_2008.pdf#page=112)
in the /Params dictionary?
This is the way to avoid that Acrobat displays no uncompressed size but
real uncompressed size (I guess both values would be very similar, when
not the same).

I second this request. The bookmark is taking on the file= name, and not
that of name=. It would be better to take the name=, or to add a
bookmark= key.

1. Try to make shorter example because your example contains too much
stuff for a minimal example.
2. You forgot \starttext in your example.
3. Your fonts don't contain greek letters which explains the missing
counter in the PDF. Did you check if the fallback fonts are loaded.

Hi, OK—
I removed texmf-cache/luatex-cache and reinstalled LMTX. The problem
persists, sad to say. It also fails when I run LuaTeX, Version 1.10.1 (TeX
Live 2019), ConTeXt ver: 2019.09.10., even after removing texmf-cache and
reinstalling.

I think it may be a bug. Could anyone confirm it?

Indeed, Pablo, there is no visible defect in the document.
I wonder if the message should cause concern because I do not know if
there is some other issue that it reflects, perhaps something that is
not visible in the viewed document, but that might impede PDF standards
compliance.
If there is no fault or typesetting problem indicated by the message, I
wonder why it is reported.
Again, if there is no problem, I can add it to my log filtering
routines, but I want to see it if there is something I should do to
eliminate it.
it's just part of the check .. if you use for instance \section{foo}
instead of \startsecction there is some guesswork

etc) but only text. Yet I would like to create bookmarks. So my MWE

\setupinteractionscreen[option=bookmark] % should not be necessary
\placebookmarks[chapter,section,subsection][chapter,section]
No trailing commas missing?
Just to make sure - I mostly overlook the most stupid mistakes...
There was \tracebookmarks only in MkII.
Maybe look through

find anything helpful though).

Nope, that works :-)
I certainly can live with that solution. Is there reason to not have
this enabled by default? (I know, there is a slight performance penalty,
but it seems strange that the bookmark defaults to the title, while the
title gets expanded but the bookmark doesn't. In any case, I will try to
figure out where in the wiki this information best belongs to.)

[NTG-context] Chapter-subtitle and a short version of a( long) chapter title to fit in the header
Dear all,
Presently I’m restyling a PhD-dissertation to make it conform to the
requirements of an external publisher.
One of the items is the form of the chapter-heads.
What would be needed on the first page of a chapter, Chapter 1 for instance, is:
- Chapter 1 (midaligned, boldface, smallish size (\tfa))
- some vertical space
- Chapter title (midaligned, SmallCaps, slanted, \tfc)
- some vertical space
- (for some chapters) Chapter subtitle, (midaligned, SmallCaps, slanted, \tfb
or smaller)
Furthermore I would need a header with the chapter-title on the even-numbered
pages and the section-title on the odd-numbered pages.
The problem here is that some of the chapter titles are too long for this and
they overlap the pagenumbers in the header.
That is why I would need a shorter form of the chapter title and in some cases
a main title and a subtitle.
As far as I know, in the command to start a chapter there is no possibility to
introduce, in addition to the special version of the title for the ToC, another
special, shorter, version of the title for the header. nor a subtitle.
I use:
\startchapter[bookmark=,list={Accompaniment in the 16th and 17th century and
the development of BC},marking=,reference=ch:HistDevel,title={Accompaniment in
the sixteenth and seventeenth century and the development of basso

For the headertexts I use what I found on

without any problems, doesn't compile in the standalone I installed recently
(version 2016.07.18 16;26).
It gives me an error warning hat I don’t understand:

I need in a Toc pagenumberings with romannumrals and numbers.
I have written this one:
\mainlanguage[de]
\setupinteraction[state=start] % don't forget this line!
% make chapter, section bookmarks visible when opening document
\placebookmarks[chapter,section,subsection][chapter,section]
\setupinteractionscreen[option=bookmark]\starttext
\setuplist[chapter]
\setuplist[section][width=1em]
\setuplist[subsection][width=1.5em, margin=0.6em]
\setuplist[subject][margin=1.5em]
\setuppagenumbering
\setupcombinedlist[content][list={part,chapter,section,subsection,subsubsection}]
None of the above setups are needed for a minimal example, remove them next
time.
\setupuserpagenumbering[conversion=romannumerals]
You’re looking for the \setupuserpagenumber command (but \setuppagenumber would
also work because it’s a synonym for the command) and you have to use the
numbercommand
key to change the conversion.
\setupuserpagenumber[numberconversion=romannumerals]

Maybe what you want to achieve is resetting the page numbers at some point: in
that case you can say:
\page
\resetuserpagenumber
just before the chapter where you want your chapter with roman numerals
beginning at number 1.

I don’t know whether the example you sent is what you typeset, but you should
pay attention to close each \startchpater by a corresponding \stopchapter. The
same remark applies to other \startSOMETHING command, which should have a
corresponding \stopSOMETHING.
This is probably not related to the question you are asking, but nevertheless
is important in many instances.

Context sees \input Sigmund
and it tries to load a file named Sigmund,
as the error message shows.
Of course loading a pdf in this way is almost useless, if you are lucky you
will see garbage, but on 99.99% of cases context will emit an error message
like "invalid char" or so.
The canonical way to load a pdf is
\externalfigure[Sigmund Freud Band1.pdf]
(no need to use {} or "" in this case)
