There seem to be some PCI-E and PCI-X U320 SCSI adapters/RAID controllers on
amazon.com for $150. Mechanical destruction would probably be cheaper :)

Will it blend? I think it will, I believe that I saw that video once...
it would seem that there is not any real option for connecting it anymore.

Thanks everyone, I think we're going to bag it and break out the BFG 9000 and
call it a day.

  From the first hit:

"the .exe is the same and I saw in InfoPath Official forum on MSDN
blogs that the Filler and Designer is the same product but just in
different modes"

So there's nothing to extract, it's the same program.

Windows has support for MTP out-of-the-box, though. At least, none
of the MTP cameras I've plugged into Windows needed anything special.
The Blackberry "something fancier" mode also does more than just MTP.
Things like tethering and device management also get presented as USB
devices. That said, MTP may well be in there, too.

I have tried an old TV degausser that worked like a charm. The guy that
loaned it to me did warm me to keep anything that could be killed by a
powerful magnetic way way away from it. While I was killing a few drives I
did kill a watch and a cell phone when someone walked into the area I had
set up to kill the drives. This was maybe 7 years ago the degausser was
maybe 10 or 15 years old at that point.

(see: http://trioptimum.com/truth/)

My first guess: The phone will charge just fine without a driver.
It's just Windows is prompting for a driver to make all the other
magic BlackBerry stuff work, and the user assumes that means it won't
work without one.

My second guess: Try fiddling with the Mass Storage Device settings
of the Blackberry. Depending on how it's configured, the BlackBerry
will present itself as either an ordinary USB flash drive, or as
something fancier. The "something fancier" mode may need drivers, but
the "ordinary USB flash drive" mode does not.

You charge a BB by plugging it into a USB port. No software needed. If he has
the wall adapter, it just uses the same USB cable to step down 115V AC and
charge it.

I can't imagine a need for any driver just for charging.

That's odd. Are you sure it's not a computer startup script? Logon scripts
should run in the context of the user being logged on.

IIRC, a subject (security principal) needs Change (Modify) permission to
truncate or write within a file. To delete a file, one needs Delete on the
file, or "delete children" (not actually called
that) on the containing folder.

  Yes. "Domain Computers".

 No.

On a side note, why can't companies make websites (that cost a lot of money to

We did find this page and we ended up installing IE9 since that's what it says
to do for 2008R2. The admx file is loaded in Windows\policy definitions
however, I should have been more specific, we are looking for group policy
preferences for IE9. We do not see an option for IE9 in preferences only IE 5
or 6 IE 7 and IE8. We are trying to do what we successfully did with GPP and
IE8 which is to add a trusted site and to enable active content to run from my
computer.

Hello all,

Is it really as easy as installing IE9 on a Windows 2008 R2 DC to have these
templates available. Is there another way that doesn't involve installing IE9
on the server?

Re: IE9 GP Admin Templates

2012-03-27 Thread James Kerr
Ah good info, this maybe why it didn't work for us. We will install the
hotfix again and create a new GPP for this and see if it works and post
back here.

On a side note, why can't companies make websites (that cost a lot of money
to access) that you don't have to hack up your IE settings to make them
work? This seems to be common in health IT from what I've seen so far.
Every damn software or website requires registry changes hacking IE, it's
annoying.

That's odd. Are you sure it's not a computer startup script? Logon

IIRC, a subject (security principal) needs Change (Modify)
permission to truncate or write within a file. To delete a file, one
needs Delete on the file, or "delete children" (not actually called
that) on the containing folder.

While it's hard to tell from this angle, it looks like you may have
destroyed the PCB and head/actuator assembly while leaving the platters
intact. If so, data could probabbly be recovered from that drive.

Is this a domain?
If so, the Domain Computers group is the one you want. Granting it Modify will
do the trick, but you can be more granular if desired.

Subject: Simple File Permissions Question

I have a logon script that creates a file in a shared folder. The owner of
that file is the computer that made it. The way it's set up now, if another
computer tries to overwrite that file, it can't. I have to go in and manually
delete the file to allow another computer to recreate it. What permissions
should I give the folder so that other computers can overwrite files created in
that directory? There is the Users group. Is there a similar group that
defines just computers? Does the Users group include computers?

Thanks for your help.

I presume this is SPI (SCSI Parallel Interface). I doubt you'll
find any current products that adapt USB/SPI. It was kind of a niche
market even when it was current. Also, all the ones I knew about were
slow.

If you really want to do software overwrite on those drives, I'd
look for a PC with a PCI/SPI adapter, and use that. If you don't have
a PCI/SPI adapter lying around, eBay has lots for cheap. (eBay might
have USB/SPI too, but if you're buying something, I'd suggest avoiding
the USB stuff.)

Myself, I'd just do physical destruction. Remove the covers, remove
the platters from the spindle, and then go at the platters with a
metal grinder. You can also by degaussing wands if you want something
slightly less messy, but the ones that work are expensive ($1000+).

We are looking to nuke a few old SCSI drives, the server they came out of is
dead.

We have usb to die/sata adaptors that we normally use, but I cannot find any
usb to scsi adaptors.

amazon, newegg, tigerdirect and Adaptec all have them as EOL.

no one seems to carry anything like this.

Anyone have any ideas, or other options for nuking old SCSI drives?

RE: What can and can't you do with EC2?

2012-03-27 Thread Charlie Kaiser
I've set up domains and DCs on EC2. We have also hosted applications
accessible only to certain IP ranges. My preferences to this point have been
to have separate domains out in EC2 but dependent on security requirements
there's no reason you couldn't connect an EC2 instance to an internal
network.

I don't think I'd want to try DHCP over EC2, though...

There are lots of quirks with EC2 stuff. Whenever I'm trying something new
there, I always set up a test environment with them and beat it up before
committing to putting in a production environment.

While there is a lot you can do with it, you have to ask why would you do
that? Sometimes it makes sense to move everything to them, sometimes you're
better off staying local. Sometimes a combination works, too...

You can lock down IP communication to your specific network or device if you
want.

What can and can't you do with EC2?

Although, I knew of the availability of Amazon's EC2, I'm curious to know if
anybody has tried some things with the platform and they have some experience
they can share on what does and doesn't work on the platform...

Could you host an application? For example, I have a HVAC controller software
that is currently running in a VM, and this might be a perfect translation to
an EC2 instance. It would have to reach my internal network somehow, but there
appears to be ways to do that.

Any other crazy things people can do with this? Could you do a Domain
Controller? How about a DHCP server?

RE: Good SBS list

2012-03-27 Thread Steven M. Caesare
Stu-

When you get a chance, would you mind shutting this down?

It's not on topic as far as NT administration is concerned, and is only
serving to increase list volume which adds to the issue of message
delays.

I think this thread has run its course.

Thanks.

That will only waste your time and theirs.

The solution -- as far as Lyris Inc is concerned -- is for
Sunbelt/GFI pay more money for a bigger Lyris license.

Possible solutions -- as far as Sunbelt/GFI is concerned -- include
paying more money for a bigger Lyris license, switching to different
list server software, and shutting down the list.

Possible solutions -- as far as list members are concerned --
include donating money to help Sunbelt/GFI buy a bigger Lyris license,
switching to another venue, and putting up with it.

Nothing to complain to them about, if the assertion that their licensing
model hasn't changed, perhaps they adjusted some licensing leveling to
squeeze more revenue, but Ben Scott has a point, there are plenty of very
good alternatives to Lyris.

We are trying to do what we successfully did with GPP and
IE8 which is to add a trusted site and to enable active content to run from my
computer.

GPP for IE 9 & 10 are in the Win Server 8 beta. I don't know If it is possible
to use the file from there on an 08R2 environment though.
