Re: mp3 players best for totally blind people
The Victor stream is great, but since I can't afford one right now, I went and bought a cheap one at the family dollar store. I can read books in mp3 format and listen to music. that's good and when I turn it off, it keeps my place when I turn it back on again. It cost me about $30.00 and as soon as I can, I'm getting a victor Stream. Re: mp3 players best for totally blind people
As others have said the Zen Stone is an off the shelf portable media player that, since it doesn't have a display is totally accessible. I use this myself, especially for proprietary and protected formats, such as Audible, Overdrive and DRM. Rockbox is a firmware replacement for portable media players that has an eyes free mode which makes it accessible. It's a little more work getting it up and running, and the newer players aren't supported, but once you get it working, you'll have talking menus, talking files and folders and potentially access to more storage than you'll get on the Zen Stone. You can find out the supported players and get more information from rockbox.org. I use this myself on two media players including one with a 30G hard drive. A nice thing about the Zen Stone and Rockbox is that you won't have to use any particular software on the PC to copy music over to the player. You can just use Windows Explorer since the players will just show up as USB attached drives on your system. The iPod Shuffle is similar to the Zen Stone since because it doesn't have a display, it's accessible. The iPod Nano 4th generation is also accessible and is similar in how it works to Rockbox. Getting the Nano talking is probably easier than installing Rockbox and getting it talking, but that's assuming you're going to use iTunes 8 to manage your music. I've played with the iPod's and followed developments regarding their accessibility, but I don't have one myself. Finally, I should also say that I do listen to music and books on my Nokia N75 cell phone running Talks. Marco Steinebach - Mardy wrote: Hi Lauren, if you talking about a hardware MP3 player I can suggest the "creative zen stone 2 GB" model. It comes without a display, has a little speaker and plays mp3 and wma files. You can have several folders and load your music onto the player just as to a normal USB-Stick. The price, in germany, is around 25,00 Euro. I've got this one and I'm very satisfied with it! RE: mp3 direct cut
I know all about Goldwave, and it does have many advantages. Actually, when working with an mp3 file, Mp3 Direct Cut has it beat for splitting and some simple editing given the fact that it works directly on the mp3 file without decompressing and re-compressing. Both programs have their uses. It's just you need to generate the spoken menus. This is done using iTunes 8 and your Windows/Mac speech settings. Once that's done it's fully accessible, with the exception that some of the advanced features, like all of the extras menu, will not speak or will partially speak. -- Chris Hallsworth e-mail: christopher...@googlemail.com MSN: ch9...@hotmail.com Skype: chrishallsworth7266 - Original Message - From: "Lauren" To: "PC Audio Discussion List" Sent: Wednesday, February 18, 2009 7:17 PM Subject: Re: mp3 players best for totally blind people What do you mean by almost accessible? Re: mp3 players best for totally blind people
I think what he means is that it requires a bit of set up to make it accessible, so therefore, it isn't going to talk to you as soon as you pull it out of the box. You'll need to have iTunes 8 running on your PC and then you'll need to attach the iPod nano to your PC and adjust some configuration options to get the talking menus installed onto the iPod. I hope that helps. Lauren wrote: What do you mean by almost accessible? What isn't? No. As much of a Gold Wave advocate as I am, I will never advocate Gold Wave for working on existing MP3's, as that inevitably means lossy-to-lossy conversion, which always, always yields quality loss. Re: recording device for telephone calls
Mix minus is a term that is used quite frequently in the broadcast industry. Here is an example of what it is. . audio, a mix-minus is a particular setup of a mixing console, such that the output to a certain device contains everything except the input from that device. This prevents echoes or feedback from reverberating or howling and squealing through the broadcast or sound reinforcement system. A mix-minus signal is sometimes also known as a 'clean feed' or a 'Select Audio Return' (SAR). The most common example of this is when hooking up a telephone hybrid to a console, at a radio station for example. The person on the telephone hears everything playing, including the DJ, except that the caller does not hear his or her own voice. This is also often used for television reporters and interview subjects speaking to a host from a remote location. Because of the delay that is introduced in most means of transmission (including satellite feeds and digital fiber optic connections), the remote subject's voice has to be removed from his or her earpiece. Otherwise, the subject would hear himself or herself with a slight (but very distracting) delay. Another common example is in the field of sound reinforcement. Consider a room with sound stations for multiple users, each station containing a microphone and a loudspeaker. Such a room might be used in a government house of parliament. The microphone in station #1 would feed the loudspeakers in every other station except station #1. In other words, station #1 receives a mix of all microphones minus the station #1 microphone. This enables all participants to hear each other clearly but minimizes problems with acoustic feedback. Re: mp3 players best for totally blind people
Hi Lauren, if you talking about a hardware MP3 player I can suggest the "creative zen stone 2 GB" model. It comes without a display, has a little speaker and plays mp3 and wma files. You can have several folders and load your music onto the player just as to a normal USB-Stick. The price, in germany, is around 25,00 Euro. I've got this one and I'm very satisfied with it! If you google phone patch there seems to bee all kinds of cheap alternatives to a hybread system, as all that I want to do is to put my telephone into my sound card for recording purposes. I will let you know what I come up with. Ok I joined this list after this thread began, but what about using Skype to call your messages or whatever, and record directly to the computer using one of the programs to record skype phone calls? Total Recorder comes to mind and that's only 17 bucks if you buy it. If you Google "record skype calls" you can find a few free apps as well. RE: recording device for telephone calls
Try a telephone hybrid from one of the broadcast supply warehouses. You will have to go through a mixer and may need to understand mix minus. I thought of possibly feeding the telephone into a mixer with hybrid telephone capability. I also checked with the source known as circuit city in the united states, and they said that they never had a request of this type before. Basically what I am looking for is a telephone patch device. Years ago there was a recording device that would fit over the telephone hand set that would enable one to record a telephone conversation. I have no idea what is out there for computers. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
