Why wouldn’t it work? Again this feature has absolutely nothing to do with operating system, Sound Card etc, its a Total Recorder Specific feature that just captures the stream and saves it to a file in the format the stream is on the Net, nothing more and nothing less. I have the Total Recorder Video Pro edition and must do some experimenting with that to see if there’s a way of capturing links to Flash Player, I’m sure there is. > On 11 Jan 2017, at 1:32 pm, Dean Martineau <top...@gmail.com> wrote: > > Does background recording work in Total Recorder in Windows 10? Of course not, there needs to be a direct link to the sound source and - in the case of BBC Music - there is one, a very nice 320K source. > On 11 Jan 2017, at 12:53 pm, John Covici <cov...@ccs.covici.com> wrote: > > There are certain limitations for this -- I use it all the time, but > it won't work on some streams like anything that uses flash, and it > doesn't work on youtube links. > > On Tue, 10 Jan 2017 20:09:09 -0500, > Dane Trethowan wrote: >> >> As far as I know the same holds true. >> Now I’m doing this from memory as its been a while since I used Total >> Recorder, you go into Background recording where you’re prompted to enter an >> UR that links to a stream of a radio station on the net etc. >> Total Recorder captures the data from this stream in real time thus avoiding >> the Sound Card completely so its just total recorder saving the data from >> the stream to the computer, nothing more and nothing less. >> You can open url’s or streams in Total Recorder for listening in the same >> way from the File Menu. >> >>> On 11 Jan 2017, at 12:01 pm, Tom Kaufman <tomca...@comcast.net> wrote: >>> >>> Have a question for Dane: you say you can have TR record and not have the >>> screen reader interfere with anything. There are certain limitations for this -- I use it all the time, but it won't work on some streams like anything that uses flash, and it doesn't work on youtube links. Re: Bit rate settings with Total Recorder
As far as I know the same holds true. Now I’m doing this from memory as its been a while since I used Total Recorder, you go into Background recording where you’re prompted to enter an UR that links to a stream of a radio station on the net etc. Total Recorder captures the data from this stream in real time thus avoiding the Sound Card completely so its just total recorder saving the data from the stream to the computer, nothing more and nothing less. You can open url’s or streams in Total Recorder for listening in the same way from the File Menu. > On 11 Jan 2017, at 12:01 pm, Tom Kaufman <tomca...@comcast.net> wrote: > > Have a question for Dane: you say you can have TR record and not have the > screen reader interfere with anything. Re: Bit rate settings with Total Recorder
Just to summarise. The method I suggested for captuing BBC Music is just that and has nothing whatever to do with the Sound Card because Total Recorder is actually capturing the stream as it comes down from the Internet, nothing more and nothing less thus what you're having saved to your computer is BBC Music, in its original format without conversion, without level adjustment or contamination of any kind, just the stream as BBC sends it to the web. If you want to set up Bit Rates and so on - then you can do all that from Recording Source And Parameters which can be accessed from Total Recorder in a variety of ways but you need not worry yourself with this for the purpose you ontlined,. Thanks for the advice, but Dane, who I will be wrighting to after this message, is suggesting that TR will record whatever is coming through the sound card, thus, I need not make any adjustments, with respect to streaming from the BBC in any case. Re: Bit rate settings with Total Recorder
Hi Tom. This whole area of recording is just a hobby for me. I don't know the technical side of things. For example, is it only my imagination but does a WAV format file not sound better than an MP3 file? Total recorder records in Wave. I then use Goldwave to double the volume and then maximise it and it really sounds quite good, then \I save it as an EMP file, once my editing has been completed. I'm just learning and trying to get the best out of my recordings but don't have the skills yet. Very best wishes. Re: Bit rate settings with Total Recorder
Hi Dane. I don't set TR to do anything. When I launch it, JAWS announces, press the space bar to record, so I do, and end up with quite a good quality WAV file, of the show that I'm listening to. I just was not sure if I could be doing this job of recording better. In your message you advised that the BBC were broadcasting at 320 kbps and if I recorded any programme, then TR would simply grab it at the same quality. I often use Tap-in radio or the assessible bbc Iplayer to stream the show, but I'm thinking that perhaps you are telling me to record directly from Internet Explorer rather than Tap-in radio? Am I right? Or is it very much the same thing whither I stream through Tap-in radio, the Accessable BBC Iplayer or Internet explorer. Incidentaly, BBC radio 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 are all termed "Global" stations, thus the 320 kbps. However, my favourate station is Radio Scotland, but this is considered as a Reginal station and only streamed at 128 kbps. So much for equality, where my national station is obviously inferiour to all the other "British" Broadcasting Company stations! Very best wishes. Re: Bit rate settings with Total Recorder
Hi Norma. Thanks for the advice, but Dane, who I will be wrighting to after this message, is suggesting that TR will record whatever is coming through the sound card, thus, I need not make any adjustments, with respect to streaming from the BBC in any case. However, in normal terms if I was wanting to use TR for making brand new recordings from my PC, then perhaps setting a required bit rate would need to be done. More homework on this I'm thinking, ha! Re: Total recorder driver clarefication needed
Hi, the best thing to do is to instal it with defaults set. If you choose one of the older drivers wich allow for choosing the application to be captured, then you stil could have system problems. Those are mostly for xp and although it could be used, it might not be reliable in all cases. Therefore, use the defaults in the instal and it will put the latest good stable driver on your system. Then to silence jaws dearing recording you should not do things on the computer or rood it to another soundcard or headset. Or press insert plus space and then the letter s to mute until recording is done and turn on again the same way. Re: Question and a problem with Total Recorder
You move forward by pressing control plus t, and backwoards with control plus L. If you find you cannot make fine enough ajustments, try adjusting the amount of movement with the control comma and control period keys. So press either of those once and try move back and forth again and ajust as needed. If you keep having problems to close it. Try running as administrator or reinstall the program. Also, if that don't work pleas take note. Open the program again, and try to close it, then as soon as you get the problem again, then go to settings, and then at the bottom you will find debug. Then tab there til you get "save to file" and press on that, and save it to a location where you can find it easily. Then send that as an attachment to support. And any arrir message you get, press on the copy button before you dismiss the dialog with the ok button, so you can paste that in the email. Also, when saving the debug to a file, make sure that the program is not closed before you do that. And don't use the "save more to file" option until you asked by support. Question and a problem with Total Recorder
First, I have a file I'm trying to edit with Total recorder. It's a .wav file, so it should be editable. I start playing the file, then try to set a begin and end of selection and then delete it, but that does not seem to work. What's the proper procedure for cutting out a snippet at the beginning of a file? Also, when I'm done with Total Recorder, I can't seem to close the program without going into Windows task manager; Total Recorder doesn't want to close on its own. I'm using Windows-7 and the latest version of the Professional version. Thanks. John John riehl
Re: Question and a problem with Total Recorder
Got to the beginning of the file, you can use ctrol-home or press the to start button. From here type shift-l, which sets the beginning of the selection. Navigate to the end of the portion you wish to cut out of the file and press shift-r which sents the end of the selection. Press the delete key and the selection will be erased. Tip, see the selection menu under the edit menu for further enhancements to fine tune your selection etc. On 9/20/2015 5:35 AM, john riehl wrote: First, I have a file I'm trying to edit with Total recorder. Re: Question and a problem with Total Recorder
The inability to close total recorder is a uia bug which effects both Window-eyes and nvda. Nothing can be done unless Microsoft fixes that bug, or someone finds a clever way around it. Total Recorder and working with Videos
Hi there, I recently upgraded total recorder standard to the videopro edition. I have some videos that I need to edit, mainly being able to separate them from one long continuous video file to individual videos. It's a concert I did with my duo, and the person who recorded our performance let the machine run. The format of that file is MOV. When I tried opening it with Total Recorder, I learned that it needed to be in a different format. I opened up another video, done in a different format, and it worked just fine. Does anyone know how to convert a MOV file to something Total Recorder can work with? Or, here's another idea. Is there a simple program that I can get that will work with these types of files in a simple manner? This is my first time working with videos, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Jim

Hello, If your sound card has Stereo Mixor What you hear it is very easy, just record what goes through your sound card. If not, I believe you need the Pro version of Total Recorder, then go to Options and Recording source and parameters; there to Advanced and select Mixing source and soundboard. Alternatively, you need software such as Virtual Cable so as to be able to record incoming and outgoing Skype sound. Ken, to shut TR down completely, just go to the task manager and end it there. Problem is, that is just a bit of a PITA, and shouldn't be necessary, but it beats having to restart the computer every time. At 06:33 PM 3/29/2015, you wrote: Hi, I have the same problem. Re: total recorder
Hi, you must make sure under the recording settings dialog that software moad is selected and for best results use the kernel filter driver. If you don't see the kernel filter driver in the main settings under the driver section, use the install file to reinstall with the kernel filter driver selected. Then just test your volumes, I normally have the recording driver volume set to round about 77%. Re: Problem with W7, Jaws and total recorder.
Greetings, Yes, I thought it might be something to do with stereo mix or what you hear, don't know the sounds system yet in W7, strange though, during the actual recording off the net stream, no problem with Jaws interfering. Jaws has definitely been switched to the RealTech (onboard) system and I only hear it through the internal RealTech (onboard) speakers.

Don't know what else to tell you, except that in my Dell's IDT sound card on Windows 7, I can go to my System Tray, Speakers/Headphones, (usually the last item there) and I can assign which soundcard I want Jaws and other sounds to come through individually. Hello Colin: I think you are referring to Stereo Mix or What you hear, which was common in Windows XP and in an attemp to control piracy, is missing in most Windows 7 sound cards. You can get a similar effect and combine different sound sources with Total Recorder Pro, it will allow you to mix in Options. Re: Total Recorder and Window-eyes 9 Beta 1
This may not apply in the least, I am still using XP, but I noticed absolutely no difference in the response in the menus after upgrading to the latest and greatest version. I also admit to being way behind on my version of WE (7.2), but remember the days not too long ago when the menus were totally responsive. Most likely there is nothing for it but to upgrade and come into the 21st century, and maybe that will soon be in the offing, but right now, these menus drive me nuts, and I rather dread having to use them, which fortunately isn't such a usual occurrence since most of my recording of late is in background. Total Recorder and Window-eyes 9 Beta 1
Hi all, I don't know if other people have noticed this or not but when using versions of Window-Eyes prior to version 9 beta 1 and in Total Recorder for me responsiveness was very sluggish when going through the menus. I'd press the up and down arrow keys and it would take roughly a second after pressing the up and down arrow keys before each menu item was spoken. I'm delighted to say that since installing the first beta of version 9 responsiveness is very quick and all the sluggishness has gone. This makes using Total Recorder with Window-Eyes a far more pleasant experience! Regards Steve.

Re: Total Recorder and Window-eyes 9 Beta 1
I don’t think its anything to do with Window-Eyes to be totally honest, the responsiveness problem you outlined was a problem I also experienced with NVDA and Total Recorder, obviously High Criteria have done something in the latest release, anyway whatever the slight irritation has gone away though again it didn’t really worry me all that much as I used keyboard shortcuts to accomplish what I needed to 99% of the time. As for different editions of Total Recorder? I too have the Video edit and wouldn’t be without it though its not installed at the present, I’m just using the Professional version though the Video version will be installed as I want to record some video review stuff with my Logitech Camera. All the controls available on Total Recorder Professional are available for Total Recorder Video edition, think of it as the Professional version with Video capturing and recording added in, think the price is around $75. Actually there’s one question which has come to mind which I need to find out, I know Total Recorder Professional Edition has “Pre-Recording Buffering”, I know the “Video” edition has this but does the “Pre-Record Buffering” work for video as well as audio? Re: Reinstalled Total Recorder
I agree, the only thing why its kind of important that it support aac plus streams and alike, is because then you can add the stations to your favorites, and schedule something and it can record without another player have to be open. The way it is now, you have to have your brouzer or another audio player open in order for the skedular to record. Re: Reinstalled Total Recorder
Actually the person who put me onto the “Background Recording” feature saved me heaps of time and many of the problems discussed in the last couple of eMails were solved. For one thing, your browser doesn’t have to remain open, Total Recorder handles all that and you can read your novel with JAWS whilst the recording takes place, you won’t hear your novel reading session when you play it back smile. Re: Reinstalled Total Recorder
Quick question about TR, if I may interject. Does it have the facility to move through a recording at slow speed - what in analogue parlance you might call rocking the spools? I'm of the old school of editing - chinagraph pencils and razor blades - and finding just the beginning of a cough, for example, isn't so easy at normal speed. -- rgds LAurence
Re: Reinstalled Total Recorder
A good interjection sir smile, yes indeed it does though it doesn’t have a”Cue/review” scrubbing type of feature that you might find in say Goldwave, it can however fast-coward and rewind through audio and you hear the audio as you’re going forward or back. You can set the increment for this from very fine to very wide. On 18 Nov 2014, at 4:53 am, Laurence Taylor g7...@gmx.co.uk wrote: Quick question about TR, if I may interject. Total Recorder Question
I have Total Recorder 8.2 with JAWS 11 and Windows XP Pro. TR is working fine; recording streams and stuff. However I must have VOX turned on because recording stops on quiet passages. Anyone know how to turn VOX off and record everything? Thanks. Howard
Re: Total Recorder Question
I assume vox is an driver spisific feature? I ask as I don't see it on my side. Probibly you use one of the older drivers wich are working better with xp, so I cannot really comment on that as I'm on windows7 with the latest 8.5 with the curnel filter driver. It’s a bit disconcerting that they aren't responding to their support inquiries from their web site for the past couple of months though. Re: Reinstalled Total Recorder
Thank you very much for your welcome smile I don’t think anyone is doubting for one second what can be done but there are some points which the original sender of the mail in the discussion brought up which are worth mentioning again. Audacity is free and that’s good, we all like free software however where’s the support when you need it? I’ve seen people on this list and many other struggling and bemoaning Audacity sometimes so what do they do then? Of course they can search Google if they want and nothing wrong with that as I’ve done the same thing many times smile, they can go looking for a tutorial and just how many of those are around. On the other hand they can purchase a product like Total Recorder and there’s the Tech support and knowledge base right in front of them. Your point is well made, we’re talking about 2 very different products given the fact that Audacity does multi track editing but I still think the point made about Audacity originally was perfectly valid.
