I like the push mower, it gives me an hour to myself with the iPod (if it's
charged), and the feeling of having earned that nice cold drink afterwards.
The only part I hate is picking up cabbage tree leaves beforehand.

It's really only spring and autumn where regular mowing is needed here. The
rest of the time it's either too cold or too dry for the grass to grow much.

The clippings are still in the wheelbarrow waiting to be added to the compost

Not only that, but full frame assholes, John.

I would buy that camera if it were real. I think just about every Pentax
shooter in the world would buy one. I would even borrow money to buy a
*second one* for backup.

My anger is for them jerking my chain; tantalizing me with something I can't
have.

John,

I don't think "just about every Pentax shooter in the world would buy
one". To a first approximation, I'd say nobody would buy one (meaning
the number of people buying a FF compared to those buying APS-C would
be minuscule).

I don't think this because I don't believe there are enough people who
want a FF, but rather because there aren't enough people willing to
BUY a FF. The feeling I get at PF from those wanting FF is that Pentax
would price it at around $2k, but I really don't think that would be
the case, certainly not when they priced the K-5 at $1,600, and god
knows what they're going to price the K-3 (the real one) at, now that
they've hiked lens prices too.

Sony's FF foray should be a lesson regarding how a great camera at a
great price (I'm thinking the A850 here) can still fail. As far as I
know, Sony lost money on every FF they sold. Mark will tell you what a
wonderful camera the A850 was, and at $2,000 it was a bargain...and
yet few people bought it.

Christine was complaining that the DA* 16-50mm was too expensive for
her when it cost $800, which is a bargain when you consider what
Canikonians pay for the standard f/2.8 zooms, and she's far from the
only one. The core Pentax userbase is a bunch of tight bastards who
spend money only at gun-point (I'm one of them) and I don't see them
(us) buying a $3,000 FF from Pentax.

Pentax doesn't see it either or otherwise they would've released a FF.
For god's sakes, they even saw the potential to make money from the
645D, so imagine how bad it must be for them to NOT release a FF.

That said, if they didn't waste money on stuff like the Q and K-01,
maybe they'd have some funds left over for a FF line of lenses and a
camera.

Start praying to the Ricoh gods, as they are the only ones that can do
something about your FF.

Cheers,

OT: eyeball photographed at eye doctor today

2012-04-03 Thread Christine Aguila
Hi Team:

I had an eye doctor appointment today, and, of course, had to run through a
battery of tests--one of which was photographing the back of my eyeballs. A
highly specialized Canon EOS camera was attached to another piece of equipment
which was rolled close to my eye. Then a frame was taken, and flash was used.
All the digital images were then sent to an lightbox-like screen. I couldn't
believe I was looking at the back of my two eyeballs. Very interesting. When
I sat down, I joked, "Not a Pentax? Hoya once owned Pentax, ya know." The
doctor was only slightly amused.

Cheers, Christine/Chicago

Re: GESO: Photowalk from 4/02

2012-04-03 Thread Walt Gilbert

Thanks, Larry!

I had a near-miss shot of that squirrel that would've been great if I'd
been 1/10 second quicker on the shutter button -- jumping from the fence
to a security light pole. Unfortunately, there was a satellite dish
attached to the pole, and he jumped behind it, leaving only his tail in
view.

And thanks for the kind words on the bike shot, too. It was a tiny
little home, full of life. The bike's design suggested a kind of
washed-out photo -- like an old Polaroid dug out of a shoebox in the
attic. So, that's what I went for.

Thanks again!

Hi all,

Just wanted to share these photos from yesterday. There's a little
redundancy, but not overmuch. The only real interesting tidbit is that
I took the K-x fitted with the Promaster 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 along with
the K20D fitted with the A 50/1.7 in order to have some reach, and it
wasn't until the end of my photowalk that I discovered that I'd had my
ISO on the K-x set to, get this, 6400! In broad daylight, under a
mid-afternoon sun with a cloudless sky! I don't know how it got that
way unless I accidentally hit the magical combination on the 4-way
while squatting down to take a shot with the K20D.

In any event, the shots turned out relatively well, all things
considered. Though, I was disappointed to see the blown-out highlights
in the butterfly shots. Still, all in all, I can't complain as I got
at least a few decent shots at the expense of a little shoe leather.

Anyway . . . here.

http://www.flickriver.com/photos/walt_gilbert/sets/72157629730945173/

I have to say, I like that Promaster 70-300 more and more as I come to
use it more often.

As always, comments, critiques and suggestions are eagerly solicited.

Thanks!

Yeah - not so sure about the SFX. I bought a few rolls on a whim just

Hang on -- how did I get to be the posterchild for Pentax Tightwads?!
:) Just to clarify -- my doubts about that lens have more to do with
its spotty reputation... deserved or not... and its unseemly zoom
behavior. I happily spent at least as much on the 50-135, and know
what a bargain it is, compared to the (FF) equivalents of the other
brands. I won't detail the rest of my gear purchases, but believe me,
I'm down with spending.

But cheapskate or no, 800 bucks is 800 bucks. If I'm not convinced I
want the product, I'm not going to spend it. As it is, each time I
think about buying a new lens (or body), I go through the motions of
convincing myself that Pentax & I are in it for the long haul. They're
putting out lots of mixed signals, for sure.

I would be very interested to know just who the core Pentax userbase
really is, btw. Obviously, the samples here and at PF must be small
in comparison to the general population... and I wonder how different
the demographic is here in the US vs. Europe vs Japan, for ex?

It is up until June 17.

This is always amazing, the images are transparencies mounted on 16x20
lightboxes. A stunning way to view photography.

To my eye, this year is better than most in the past. Previously, the chosen
images always seemed to my eye to be 'cool pictures of animals.' And they
inevitably were. For 2012, my first impression is that they are more
'visually abstract' or compositionally creative, or whatever. Call it 'arty'
but they seem to be trying for more than they have in the past. The B&W is
especially good, though all are digital, not Tri-X.

If you are in the area, it is worth the $12 admission price. Call me ahead
of time, and I can get you in free on my membership.

Cheers,

I must have missed that.

I'm sure glad I've already got the 16-50, 50-135 & 60-250;
Between them they now add up to around $2000 more than I paid.
They're nice glass, but I'd think hard before paying that much.

It'd be easier to put a 24x36 sensor into a 645D body, and call it the
643D. It might even be possible to redesign it with a shorter
registration distance (and smaller mirror) so you can use K-mount lenses.

Many thanks, Jack!

The squirrel and the butterfly shots were all taken with the Promaster
on the K-x, and the rest were shot with the K20D and A-50/1.7.

I wasn't crazy about that Promaster when I first got it, but it's
starting to grow on me. I think the smartest thing I did was taking the

I remember you telling me how much you like that lens! And a couple

the external zoom... The weather sealing is nice, but... really, I'm

It would be interesting to see what would happen if work/food were offered,

Lurker pulls his head out to say:

Two of our best commenting on a stunning shot by Joe Dixon.

Frankly, what Joe did was impossible. First he used a Film Camera,
and an old one at that. A Pentax LX that could be Thirty-two years
old, if he has the Early Version made the first year.

Next he used a lens without auto-focus on two moving subjects. At
close range, no less. Supposedly this lens could be up to 28 years
old. A rumored Pentax A* 20mm f:\2.8 ED. Frankly I doubt such a
lens was ever made.

The whole thing sounds made up. Hmph! Film, no less.

Everyone knows you can only take good pictures with the very newest
equipment. 'Cept for me. I've got some of the new stuff and still
can't do crap.

that I'd had my ISO on the K-x set to, get this, 6400! In broad
daylight, under a mid-afternoon sun with a cloudless sky! I don't
know how it got that way unless I accidentally hit the magical
combination on the 4-way while squatting down to take a shot with
the K20D.

In any event, the shots turned out relatively well, all things
considered. Though, I was disappointed to see the blown-out
highlights in the butterfly shots. Still, all in all, I can't
complain as I got at least a few decent shots at the expense of a
little shoe leather.

Anyway . . . here.

Only problem I've had is when I dropped my camera bag and the lens took the
brunt of impact. My fault. Had to get it serviced.

Otherwise, I love having this camera out when I'm walking in the rain. It sits
over my shoulders on TOP OF the camera bag, so I'm ready even if I'm in a
downpour. Effective and entertaining, especially when someone points to my bag
and says "uhm, sir? your camera's getting wet!" "Yes, I know".

BUT with that being said: I wouldn't pay $1500 for that. Even the approx $800
price was a bit much to swallow way back when.

They are dancing to the blues. Both the music and the dance are in large part
about finding joy in sorrow. I don't remember what song was playing, but it
was almost certainly about some sorrowful topic, and good dancers dance not
only with each other and the beat of the music, but to the soul of the song.

The weather proofing is critical for me. The 16-50 on the K-5 is a nearly
perfect "daily driver" combination. It's fast enough for most lighting
situations, it covers the critical zoom range, and in most cases, it's sharp
enough that any difference in sharpness between it and a prime is moot, if it's
even noticeable. Being able to take my camera out and shoot no matter what the
weather, even if it's raining, or a dust storm, is crucial. I've gotten some
of my best photos because I didn't need to worry if my camera got wet.

I would love to have a DA* (weather sealing and quick shift focus) version of
the DA35 macro as a daily driver prime. That would be close to the perfect
lens for photo walks in the woods.

These are returns (for whatever reason) but since they were purchased
before the price increase, Amazon may not have priced them
accordingly.
Right now they represent over $500 off of NEW. Probably won't last

Last year's earthquake & tsunami along with other natural disasters in
Asia have affected the cost of production.

I know that when Thailand flooded last year hard-drive prices spiked. I
bought a 1.5TB drive for $60.00 in July and after the floods, the
cheapest I could find that same drive was about $200.00. It's back down
to $100.00 now.

Looks like prices have come down some since they're beginning to
recover. Maybe the same will happen with camera & lens prices.

Groan.

The 16-50 has been on my wish list for a while... I guess I should
have bought it $700 ago.

I can understand incremental price increases, but almost double?
Yikes. For a long time, one of the advantages of Pentax has been the
value proposition... if that goes away, then what? Just as expensive

I thought the bottom line of foreground trees, 'the black', easily
followed the rule of thirds, dividing the image vertically in the
lower portion of the frame, counterbalanced by the two higher
juxtaposed hillsides that essentially divide the image vertically a
third of the way from the top of the frame.

Opportunity on Amazon Warehouse deals Pentax 16-50mm ?

http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000NO5QV6/ref=sr_1_1_olp?ie=UTF8&qid=1333477764&sr=8-1&condition=used

These are returns (for whatever reason) but since they were purchased
before the price increase, Amazon may not have priced them
accordingly.
Right now they represent over $500 off of NEW. Probably won't last
long. (They are all eligible for 30 day return policy, so little
worries of getting something defective).

Nice set, Larry!

While I take a back seat to no one in my appreciation of boobs, I have
to say my favorite of the bunch is #198. Aside from the light and sense
of motion I liked when I saw it originally, this time the somewhat
forlorn expressions on the dancers' faces is what really struck me.

It gives it a certain impact that somehow eluded me on the first viewing.

i think Ricoh missed an opportunity to couple the price increase with a really

Agreed. I was having a hard time justifying the purchase at the old
price, due to the lens' uneven reputation. I can't imagine shelling
out at the new price.

The critical thing is that Ricoh/Pentax increase the build quality
(particularly on this specific lens!) so that it's worth the new price
point. Based on the problematic history reported here and elsewhere, I
wouldn't pay this amount of money for the DA*16-50/2.8 lens. I had
one, I sold it to a friend (and I wouldn't do that if I had any
reservations about the one I had), but I've seen reports from others
on everything from poor centering to failed focus motors, and mixed
reviews on warranty service for it too. That could ba a $1400 hassle.

I paid a similar price for a couple of the Olympus ZD lenses I've
owned. Comparing them to the new Pentax lenses I've owned, I could
easily see why they were worth the additional money: far superior
construction quality, flawless reliability. (I won't get into debates
about their optical performance.)

Right. So the question is: is that a good idea, given Pentax's
position in the market?

Probably a good idea given their cost structure...

Could be. But I note that the Nikon 17-55/2.8 at $1424.00 (B&H) isn't
weather sealed; the Canon 16-35/2.8 at 1699.00 *is* weather sealed but
costs almost $200 more than the Pentax and only goes to 35mm at the
long end.

At a certain point, Pentax has to price their lenses comparably to the

It's a good thing I love the old manual primes so much!

Though, I can't help but wonder how much pressure this will put on the
vintage glass market.

Hi all,

Just wanted to share these photos from yesterday. There's a little
redundancy, but not overmuch. The only real interesting tidbit is that I
took the K-x fitted with the Promaster 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 along with the
K20D fitted with the A 50/1.7 in order to have some reach, and it wasn't
until the end of my photowalk that I discovered that I'd had my ISO on
the K-x set to, get this, 6400! In broad daylight, under a mid-afternoon
sun with a cloudless sky! I don't know how it got that way unless I
accidentally hit the magical combination on the 4-way while squatting
down to take a shot with the K20D.

In any event, the shots turned out relatively well, all things
considered. Though, I was disappointed to see the blown-out highlights
in the butterfly shots. Still, all in all, I can't complain as I got at
least a few decent shots at the expense of a little shoe leather.

Anyway . . . here.

http://www.flickriver.com/photos/walt_gilbert/sets/72157629730945173/

I have to say, I like that Promaster 70-300 more and more as I come to
use it more often.

As always, comments, critiques and suggestions are eagerly solicited.

Thanks!

Groan.

The 16-50 has been on my wish list for a while... I guess I should
have bought it $700 ago.

I can understand incremental price increases, but almost double?
Yikes. For a long time, one of the advantages of Pentax has been the
value proposition... if that goes away, then what? Just as expensive
as Canikon, but quirkier, and with no FF option?

Rick,
Same story here.
My dad got a power mower after I went to college,
and he had to mow!

Re: It's just two buttons

It sounds like it would be one of those fun apps that may appeal to a
few people.

I reality, for me, I don't need or want special vibration codes for
everyone in my address book. I have a code set for the family members
that may need me in an emergency. That way when I'm teaching, or
other times when I have the audio ringer turned off, I can tell by the
pattern of the vibration whether I can ignore the incoming message, or
if I should actually take the phone out of my pocket and look at the
screen.

I'm in the generation that grew up before cell phones and pagers and
don't feel the need to instantly respond to every ring or buzz of the
phone. I remember when nobody called you unless it was important.
How times have changed. Not necessarily better or worse, but very
different.

Pictures of your parents can be the worst.
Catch them with their grandchildren for the best expressions.
They forget about the camera then.
(Worked for me, after we finally had some grandchildren for them!)

Anyway . . . here.

I have to say, I like that Promaster 70-300 more and more as I come to
use it more often.

As always, comments, critiques and suggestions are eagerly solicited.

Thanks!
