'cache' and been on an european (in a broad sense) cinema binge:
almodovar, kieslowski, tarkovsky, julio medem, kiarostami. but i do
really wonder if movies like these have a substantial market outside
 the film festival circuit?

Cache is one of the best films of recent years - quite stunning and typical
of French movies in many ways. It is very difficult to understand what the
hell's going on until you start to link it to French culture and history,
and see the parallels with the present day. There is a superb essay about
the film in Unravelling French Cinema by T Jefferson Kline.

A lot of European cinema is/was subsidised by the government or the EC and
often made on a very small budget (at least by comparison with US
production) and may not be required to do good box office in the first
weekend, but they can be slow burners. People have been watching Tarkovsky's
films for decades, for example, so I'd imagine they've easily covered their
costs by now.

For France, cinema is part of the 'exception francaise'. Their film schools
and the CNC are about producing specifically French films, with everything
that that implies, so that France can stand as a beacon of intellectual
elitism and culture, and so that it can demonstrate that there are other
ways of doing things and of thinking. This has arisen out of necessity.
France used to be the world's leading film producers, but the talkies and
American money put a stop to it, so French cinema had to find another role.

The paradox is that American and French cinema feed off each other. The
French love American cinema, and they make use of it, but they transform it
- A Bout de Souffle by Godard is an easy and obvious example of a French
director saturated with American cinema turning his hero worship into
something utterly and unmistakably French. Similarly, Hollywood has
plundered French cinema relentlessly, but transformed it for mass audiences
- it can be very interesting to compare French movies with their US remakes.
L'Appartement by Gilles Mimoumi, remade as Wicker Park by Paul McGuigan, is
a good example, and there's an interesting essay here about them:
http://cinemademerde.com/Essay-Lappartment%20Wicker%20Park.shtml
although the writer misses the important (and sense-making) fact that
L'Appartement is basically A Midsummer Night's Dream by Shakespeare - which
features in the movie.

B

great thing if they do of course... here
they can only be seen at special film club screenings (as good citizens
of course none of us use torrent clients). as a counterpoint, spidey
just raked in the highest ever grossings for a hollywood movie in
 india.

I don't think it's so much feeling frisky, as getting through a huge backlog of
photos. I was gone for a week, didn't even have a laptop to look at them on,
then got home with just enough time to unpack, and then do a week's worth of
events at the dojo.

One interesting aspect of the event in Portland is that Josh was shooting with
a 5D mk 3, and Drew had both a K-x and a D700. He used the D700 with a 50/1.4
for low light. It's interesting to look at the photos from the three cameras
taken in the same low light conditions.

Fantastic, Bob! You captured all the key historical moments very well. The

Just perfect that one.

I reminded Darrel yesterday that the Olympics starts next Friday and that I was

RE: Olympic torch relay

2012-07-21 Thread Bob W
Thanks Derby, and everyone else who looked.

I was quite lucky with the spot I chose - I had no idea there was going to
be a handover there, and luckily there weren't many people around.

There are some photos of today's relay on the BBC which show some of the
more spectacular parts of Greenwich:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-18937691

But they are all tightly controlled and closed to oiks like me at the
moment. You can see from the BBC pictures how much everything associated
with the Olympics has been battened down.

The young lad who took the torch in my pictures has just been interviewed on
the BBC while I was typing this email. I'll update the captions soon include
the names of the torchbearers.

The dog was a nice bonus!

Snaps be buggered, Bob. Those are some of the best pictures I've seen
for getting across the combination of the spectacle of a worldwide event
and the atmosphere of joy and involvement from the local community.

As others have said, the dog photograph is outstanding (and the light
at that hour doesn't hurt, either). But there are another half a dozen
shots there I'd be proud to have discovered when I had time for a review.
In particular I like the second shot of the handover - not only a perfect
documentary shot, but also capturing the personal side of things. That's
also true of the shot of the young torchbearer (and his family, I assume).
Then there's the crowd all looking up the street in anticipation, and the
final shot as the torch passes on.

Good News on Photo Management

2012-07-21 Thread Christine Aguila
Hi Everyone:

The Martin Evening book arrived, and, of course, I've been reading it. The
book is very good, so highly recommend to others. At 667 pages (not including
index) it's comprehensive and clearly written. Scott Kellby's books are too
wordy; in fact, I wondered when reading his book if he was just taping
workshops, then transcribing his lecture/directions, then publishing nearly as
is.

I obviously focused on the Library module and learned a bunch, and hence have
created a workflow by which I can relink the master photo files from my working
external hard drive to the 8000 to the corresponding catalogue, so with a
little time and attention, I should get all the photo files linked up. I've
linked up quite a bit already: find in folder on dead drive, find in Finder
(Mac), go to working drive, find image etc. It turns out the folder structures
on the dead drive and the working drive are fairly similar, with some
exceptions, but Finder on Mac makes it easy to quickly match up, so I'm good to
go.

Next step is to get a real workflow and hierarchal structure going. The
Evening book does a good job of presenting options, and I have the link George
Sinos posted, so I just need to think about this.

The feature I hadn't really used before was exporting a catalogue of selected
photos. Knowing now that I can export the metadata, previews, and a copy of
the master photo files in one catalogue, I think I will incorporate this into
my back up workflow when dealing with those extra special keepers that I really
want to keep safe. Obviously, we want to keep all our keepers safe, but this
feature, I think, will give added on site and off site protection.

So, thanks everyone! Crying no longer in Chicago.

Cheers, Christine

Re: Good News on Photo Management

2012-07-21 Thread George Sinos
I think a better way to describe the Kelby book is chatty. It's
roughly 1/2 the length of the Evening's book, but it's a very
conversational, step-by-step, style. Kelby doesn't always tell you
why to do something. The just tell you how. A lot of people find the
chapter introductions annoying. Every chapter has an into that Kelby
just writes to have fun. Most of the time they don't have a lot to do
with the chapter. You can skip the chapter intros and not miss
anything but storytelling.

Evening is on the other end of the scale. He tells you how, buried in
the why. And very often gives you several different examples of how
you might do the same thing in different ways.

I think of the Kelby's book as an instruction manual and Evening's
book as a service manual.

I have both. If I just want to quickly figure out how to get something
done, or get an overview of features I'll pick the Kelby books (or
more likely watch their videos.) If I'm trying to make a decision on
something a little bigger, like figure out a process or method, I'll
read Evening's book.

Here are the best four (including last week's, so three new ones) of

I like Scott, I've met him once upon a time and he's a very energetic
and enjoyable guy to talk with. But his writing style is WAY too
chatty for me. Virtually unreadable.

Martin's book is a lot more to my liking. He presents information
clearly and concisely.

Lightroom is a huge subject to write about, with many many features.
The good news is that you can use it in a simple manner and learn as
much as you need to as your experience grows. There are just a few
basics that you really need to understand at the start to get the most
out of it.

with a little time and attention, I should get all the photo files linked
up. I've linked up quite a bit already: find in folder on dead drive, find
in Finder (Mac), go to working drive, find image etc. It turns out the
folder structures on the dead drive and the working drive are fairly
similar, with some exceptions, but Finder on Mac makes it easy to quickly
match up, so I'm good to go.

Next step is to get a real workflow and hierarchal structure going. The
Evening book does a good job of presenting options, and I have the link
George Sinos posted, so I just need to think about this.

The feature I hadn't really used before was exporting a catalogue of
selected photos. Knowing now that I can export the metadata, previews, and
a copy of the master photo files in one catalogue, I think I will
incorporate this into my back up workflow when dealing with those extra
special keepers that I really want to keep safe. Obviously, we want to keep
all our keepers safe, but this feature, I think, will give added on site and
 off site protection.

So, thanks everyone! Crying no longer in Chicago.

 Cheers, Christine

Bummer. If Pentax wants to stay competitive, service is crucial. No repair

I'm using my K7, which normally serves as the backup. It's fine, but I have a

Hi Christine: the upgrade is really simple. I just download from the Adobe
site, install by following on screen directions, and you're done, I've done
upgrades since the 1st version and have never had a problem.

If you're having hardware problems, I'd sort that out first before I'd upgrade
any application.

Yes, using Lightroom 4. It's great! Highly recommend it. The highlight and
shadow sliders are very robust, in my view, and they have added the geo mapping
and book module is linked to blurb.com. The book module interface is very
nice, easy to use.

Once I find all my photos, I'll really be able to do something with them now!
:-)

a copy of the master photo files in one catalogue, I think I will
incorporate this into my back up workflow when dealing with those extra
special keepers that I really want to keep safe. Obviously, we want to keep
all our keepers safe, but this feature, I think, will give added on site and
 off site protection.

So, thanks everyone! Crying no longer in Chicago.

 Cheers, Christine

PDML Annual Arrived

2012-07-21 Thread Christine Aguila
We just finished having a leisurely walk through this year's annual. Fantastic
work everyone and a very nice layout, Mark. Loved Doug's whimsical Forward as
well--always enjoy that, and thought the page design for the quotes list fun.

Hope it raises some money for the kids at DANA-FARBER.

Cheers, Christine

I'm still skinny, but I don't think I'm geeky, yet I still stay away
from gyms. I like to be out in the real world, which is why cycling
 works so well for me.

Getting outside is a large part of why I exercise as well. I live about 2km
from some hills and it's the best place to go running or riding. That's
probably why I tend to get a little bored doing laps in the pool but it's not
too bad in there.

 Couldn't stand a stationary bike, I don't think.

Just between you, me and the rest of the word, I bought a mag trainer last year
because I don't like riding in the rain. I can't see a damn thing with wet
glasses on, the roads are slipperier and the bike gets surprisingly dirty. But
I find it a lot harder to push a decent heart rate on the trainer. I just need
something to occupy my mind. Last time I set it up I put some Monty Python on,
which helped a bit.
