Cache is one of the best films of recent years - quite stunning and typical of French movies in many ways. It is very difficult to understand what the hell's going on until you start to link it to French culture and history, and see the parallels with the present day. There is a superb essay about the film in Unravelling French Cinema by T Jefferson Kline. A lot of European cinema is/was subsidised by the government or the EC and often made on a very small budget (at least by comparison with US production) and may not be required to do good box office in the first weekend, but they can be slow burners. People have been watching Tarkovsky's films for decades, for example, so I'd imagine they've easily covered their costs by now. For France, cinema is part of the 'exception francaise'. Their film schools and the CNC are about producing specifically French films, with everything that that implies, so that France can stand as a beacon of intellectual elitism and culture, and so that it can demonstrate that there are other ways of doing things and of thinking. This has arisen out of necessity. France used to be the world's leading film producers, but the talkies and American money put a stop to it, so French cinema had to find another role. The paradox is that American and French cinema feed off each other. The French love American cinema, and they make use of it, but they transform it - A Bout de Souffle by Godard is an easy and obvious example of a French director saturated with American cinema turning his hero worship into something utterly and unmistakably French. Similarly, Hollywood has plundered French cinema relentlessly, but transformed it for mass audiences - it can be very interesting to compare French movies with their US remakes. L'Appartement by Gilles Mimoumi, remade as Wicker Park by Paul McGuigan, is a good example, and there's an interesting essay here about them: http://cinemademerde.com/Essay-Lappartment%20Wicker%20Park.shtml although the writer misses the important (and sense-making) fact that L'Appartement is basically A Midsummer Night's Dream by Shakespeare - which features in the movie. B great thing if they do of course... here they can only be seen at special film club screenings (as good citizens of course none of us use torrent clients). as a counterpoint, spidey just raked in the highest ever grossings for a hollywood movie in india. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

There is no need whatsoever to devise a structure outside of Lightroom if you are using only Lightroom to access the raw files, which is my situation. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't devise such a structure if that suits you, but it is not a need, because LR can do anything that the file system can do. How do you back these up? I arrange mine by year/month for each collection so that after a while I can make an offsite backup of any particular year/month folder. RE: Olympic torch relay
Thanks Derby, and everyone else who looked. I was quite lucky with the spot I chose - I had no idea there was going to be a handover there, and luckily there weren't many people around. There are some photos of today's relay on the BBC which show some of the more spectacular parts of Greenwich: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-18937691 But they are all tightly controlled and closed to oiks like me at the moment. You can see from the BBC pictures how much everything associated with the Olympics has been battened down. The young lad who took the torch in my pictures has just been interviewed on the BBC while I was typing this email. I'll update the captions soon include the names of the torchbearers. The dog was a nice bonus! Those are some of the best pictures I've seen for getting across the combination of the spectacle of a worldwide event and the atmosphere of joy and involvement from the local community. As others have said, the dog photograph is outstanding (and the light at that hour doesn't hurt, either). But there are another half a dozen shots there I'd be proud to have discovered when I had time for a review. In particular I like the second shot of the handover - not only a perfect documentary shot, but also capturing the personal side of things. That's also true of the shot of the young torchbearer (and his family, I assume). Then there's the crowd all looking up the street in anticipation, and the final shot as the torch passes on. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Good News on Photo Management
Hi Everyone: The Martin Evening book arrived, and, of course, I've been reading it. The book is very good, so highly recommend to others. At 667 pages (not including index) it's comprehensive and clearly written. Scott Kellby's books are too wordy; in fact, I wondered when reading his book if he was just taping workshops, then transcribing his lecture/directions, then publishing nearly as is. I obviously focused on the Library module and learned a bunch, and hence have created a workflow by which I can relink the master photo files from my working external hard drive to the 8000 to the corresponding catalogue, so with a little time and attention, I should get all the photo files linked up. I've linked up quite a bit already: find in folder on dead drive, find in Finder (Mac), go to working drive, find image etc. It turns out the folder structures on the dead drive and the working drive are fairly similar, with some exceptions, but Finder on Mac makes it easy to quickly match up, so I'm good to go. Next step is to get a real workflow and hierarchal structure going. The Evening book does a good job of presenting options, and I have the link George Sinos posted, so I just need to think about this. The feature I hadn't really used before was exporting a catalogue of selected photos. Knowing now that I can export the metadata, previews, and a copy of the master photo files in one catalogue, I think I will incorporate this into my back up workflow when dealing with those extra special keepers that I really want to keep safe. Obviously, we want to keep all our keepers safe, but this feature, I think, will give added on site and off site protection. So, thanks everyone! Crying no longer in Chicago. Re: Good News on Photo Management
I think a better way to describe the Kelby book is chatty. It's roughly 1/2 the length of the Evening's book, but it's a very conversational, step-by-step, style. Kelby doesn't always tell you why to do something. The just tell you how. A lot of people find the chapter introductions annoying. Every chapter has an into that Kelby just writes to have fun. Most of the time they don't have a lot to do with the chapter. You can skip the chapter intros and not miss anything but storytelling. Evening is on the other end of the scale. He tells you how, buried in the why. And very often gives you several different examples of how you might do the same thing in different ways. I think of the Kelby's book as an instruction manual and Evening's book as a service manual. I have both. If I just want to quickly figure out how to get something done, or get an overview of features I'll pick the Kelby books (or more likely watch their videos.) If I'm trying to make a decision on something a little bigger, like figure out a process or method, I'll read Evening's book. gs George Sinos gsi...@gmail.com www.georgesphotos.net plus.georgesinos.com On Sat, Jul 21, 2012 at 3:44 PM, P. Re: PESO - I'm Yours
Thanks, Derby. To be honest with you I don't know what she was playing. I was rushing into a building (Roy Thompson Hall, Toronto's major concert hall) and I saw her. I do know she was playing a lovely old jazz standard and playing it well (despite the piano being badly out of tune) but I don't recall the song. When I came out, she was gone. As for contrast, yeah, it could use more pop, but it's really just a fun throw away snap taken with my phone. I'm not inclined to do much more with it. I like Scott, I've met him once upon a time and he's a very energetic and enjoyable guy to talk with. But his writing style is WAY too chatty for me. Virtually unreadable. Martin's book is a lot more to my liking. He presents information clearly and concisely. Lightroom is a huge subject to write about, with many many features. The good news is that you can use it in a simple manner and learn as much as you need to as your experience grows. There are just a few basics that you really need to understand at the start to get the most out of it. Re: Good News on Photo Management
Hi Christine: the upgrade is really simple. I just download from the Adobe site, install by following on screen directions, and you're done, I've done upgrades since the 1st version and have never had a problem. If you're having hardware problems, I'd sort that out first before I'd upgrade any application. Yes, using Lightroom 4. It's great! Highly recommend it. The highlight and shadow sliders are very robust, in my view, and they have added the geo mapping and book module is linked to blurb.com. The book module interface is very nice, easy to use. Once I find all my photos, I'll really be able to do something with them now! :-) Cheers, Christine On Jul 21, 2012, at 8:50 PM, Christine Nielsen ch...@inielsen.net wrote: That is good news, Christine! Couldn't stand a stationary bike, I don't think. Just between you, me and the rest of the word, I bought a mag trainer last year because I don't like riding in the rain. I can't see a damn thing with wet glasses on, the roads are slipperier and the bike gets surprisingly dirty. But I find it a lot harder to push a decent heart rate on the trainer. They're all police volunteers. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-18645207 B Dave On Jul 21, 2012, at 8:19 PM, Bob W wrote: I dragged my sorry ass out of bed bright and early this morning to watch the torch relay go through Greenwich. RE: Olympic torch relay
From: pdml-boun...@pdml.net [mailto:pdml-boun...@pdml.net] On Behalf Of frank theriault Reminds me of watching a bike race. You get there and wait. Other people come, and they wait, too. After a while, advertising vehicles and whatnot go by. You wait some more. They go by real fast. It's over. You mean like this one and the one next? http://www.web-options.com/Pick2007/content/_7086393_large.html That was from the TdF Grand Depart from London in 2007. Of course today is the BIG DAY for British cycling ;-) My favourite shot: http://www.web-options.com/Relay/content/P0210101_large.html Wonderful gallery!
