Re: OT: XP question - dudes, i got my dell
The OEM CD used to be the OS from Microsoft, there was very little trial software, sometimes things like the original beta version of MS Money. The other crap is often bulk filler supplied by the Manufacture, to punch up it's supplied software list. A company I worked for bought all it's programming work stations from Gateway, we got two CD's one of Micosoft's NT OS and one of the Gateway "enhancements". The frist thing we did when we got them was to take the OEM copy of the OS, (WinNT in this case), Format the Hard drive and install a clean version from the included MS installation CD. Then add drivers for the specific additional hardware, network cards, high res video cards etc. Once this was done you had a pretty clean install. The manufactures don't supply those Microsoft OEM CDs anymore. You didn't want most of the crap on the other CD, now you get neither. RE: OT: XP question - dudes, i got my dell
I found this little script on the Dell forums: http://www.yorkspace.com/pc-de-crapifier Written specifically to remove Dell bloatware, but works on any brand computer with any of the listed programs pre-installed. I ran it on mine and it worked as advertised. A lot of the extra stuff included with my new Dell a year ago was trial version stuff - good for some many days and then it was gonna cost to continue to use. Actually I believe that they are allowed to add their own, and other software by agreement, (under penalty of Anti Trust action), but removing something that Microsoft includes is a different matter, especially since installation CD/DVDs are no longer included, and most people don't know how to re-install, and will probably never re-install the OS, barring a complete melt down. Re: OT: XP question - dudes, i got my dell
Ann, Windows Power Toys at various times included a quick resolution change utility that installed as a monitor icon in the system tray allowing you immediate access to every resolutions that your card/monitor combination would support. It was incorporated into various sub versions of Windows and some card manufactures also included something like it with their bundled software. There may be something like that already on your machine. I always though it was useful because I run a bunch of older programs that don't follow current rules for resizing with resolution changes. I don't run XP so I'm not as familier what may be available built into XP. I will look into if for you. OT Again: Windows XP Question
Sorry to keep asking these computer questions, gang, but I figure someone here will have the answer. When my modem connects to my ISP, Windows Media Center Edition puts a message in a little bubble at the bottom of the screen telling me so. The message stays there until I click to make it go away. No previous version of Windows (including two previous installations of XP Home) has done this. No doubt Microsoft thinks this is helpful to me. I consider it yet another Microsoft annoyance. Does anyone know how I can get Windows not to do this? Thanks, Joe

This week-end I heard of a couple of skiing tourists who got fried by the railway power cable on the Oslo-Bergen route last year. They came downhill, unaware, towards the track in poor weather. It hit them in the chest before they fell down on the track. Snow depth at the place was about 3 meters. Tough luck. Thank you for all who answered my question. I think the transfer, reformat and partition, and re-transfer is my best option. I'm running XP home. How do I make sure I have everything off C drive before reformatting? As this is very OT and may be long, please feel free to contact me off list. Got to agree with Len on this one, a duplicate transfer is the only way that you can guarantee the preservation of your data. Re: Re: XP question
Well, not really that simple. When you re-partition the drive, you'll have to have enough space on your C:\ partition to hold the image that you made of it originally. Mainly because the registry is going to look for all of your programs in the same places they were before you repartitioned the drive. The only sure way is to back up all of your data and then partition and format the drive the way that you want it. Then, you re-install all of your software from the original disks into the partitions in which you want them. Last, you bring back your data into the appropriate program subdirectories, where the programs will expect to find it. There are other ways to do this, one of which uses the Norton's Ghost program. You install a new hard drive, of the size you desire. You partition and format the partitions the way that you want, making the first partition bootable. Then you use Norton Ghost to move the applications and their data files to the places where you want them on the other drive. Now you go into CMOS and make the new drive the primary drive and boot from it. You can now fdisk and format your original drive any way you want. You can even make an image of the new drive and clone it onto the old drive, if you wish. Then go back and reset the CMOS to boot from the old drive. After this is done, you have the perfect backup system. Just periodically image the old drive to the new one. If the old one fails, or is corrupted, you can reformat it and image the new drive back to it again. Or replace the old drive and put an image of the backup drive on it and keep right on keepin' on. It's a lot easier to do than it is to tell about it and new hard drives are really very cheap. If what you have on your computer is important to you, the machine should have two drives set up like this with a third drive sitting on a shelf just in case one of the two operating drives should fail. There are other ways to do all of this, this way minimizes risk and hair tearing. Len --- From: "Dr E D F Williams" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: Re: XP question Date: Fri, 7 Feb 2003 16:15:01 +0200 Quite easy and you have several opportunities to decide whether what the program is about to do is actually what you want. Of course you should back up your files first; just in case the power fails in the middle of the operation. To do this there is another program, by the same people, called Drive Image. This will make an exact image of your drive that can be put back easily in case of trouble. Of course - if you just buy Drive Image and do a backup you can then use DOS's Fdisk to re-partition your drive. You can then format the new partitions, make the first active and put everything back from the image and save some money. You need to be sure that the new partition is big enough for the image. But when I did it I merely backed up some important files to CD and then re-partitioned the drive with PMagic. It went smoothly. ___ Dr E D F Williams http://personal.inet.fi/cool/don.williams Author's Web Site and Photo Gallery Updated: March 30, 2002 - Original Message - From: "David Brooks" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Friday, February 07, 2003 3:57 PM Subject: Re: Re: XP question > Don. > I'm thinking of getting Partition Magic to > slice up my 40 Gig HD(XP Home version)Is it relativley > painfree to use:) > > Dave > Begin Original Message > > From: "Dr E D F Williams" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Sent: Fri, 7 Feb 2003 08:42:25 +0200 > To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Subject: Re: XP question > > > I use XP Pro and used Partition Magic to change the partitions on C: > > Don > ___ > Dr E D F Williams > http://personal.inet.fi/cool/don.williams > Author's Web Site and Photo Gallery > Updated: March 30, 2002 > > > - Original Message - > From: "Butch Black" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Sent: Friday, February 07, 2003 1:20 AM > Subject: OT: XP question > > > > Hi: > > > > Is it possible to partition the main HD in XP? RE: XP question
You can partition an empty disk, up until the point that there is no 'unpartitioned' space on it anymore. Without an add on tool like partition magic, you cannot change the size of a partition once it has been set up. Your C drive was presumably formatted with a single partition fillinf the whole disk. DO NOT use the format option on the C drive, because the only way XP can format the disk as standard is to wipe it!! > -Original Message- > From: Butch Black [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: 06 February 2003 23:21 > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: OT: XP question > > > Hi: > > Is it possible to partition the main HD in XP?
