MySqueezebox is indeed just the source of the alarm-tune. While one could question if this is the right thing to do - actually it shouldn't be that bad (except that MySB.com has proved to be unreliable sometimes). See - if you'd have a normal stream as alarm tune (say a radio-station) it would also connect to a foreign stream. As a reference here is the log from my radio (also connected to a local server, but connecting to a radio stream) Code: Apr 28 08:00:01 squeezeplay: INFO audio.decode - decode_start_handler:275 init decoder mp3 Apr 28 08:00:01 squeezeplay: INFO audio.decode - Playback.lua:436 connect 87.248.219.57:80 GET /stream/rbb_fritz_mp3_m_a HTTP/1.0^M Apr 28 08:00:01 squeezeplay: INFO audio.decode - Playback.lua:439 GET /stream/rbb_fritz_mp3_m_a HTTP/1.0^M Apr 28 08:00:01 squeezeplay: Cache-Control: no-cache^M Apr 28 08:00:01 squeezeplay: Connection: close^M Apr 28 08:00:01 squeezeplay: Accept: */*^M Apr 28 08:00:01 squeezeplay: Host: rbb.ic.llnwd.net^M Apr 28 08:00:01 squeezeplay: User-Agent: iTunes/4.7.1 (Linux; N; Debian; armv5tel-linux; DE; utf8) SqueezeCenter, Squeezebox Server/7.5.1/30663^M Apr 28 08:00:01 squeezeplay: Icy-Metadata: 1^M Apr 28 08:00:01 squeezeplay: ^M Apr 28 08:00:01 squeezeplay: WARN applet.AlarmSnooze - AlarmSnoozeApplet.lua:277 notify_playerModeChange: player (LocalPlayer {Squeezebox Radio}) mode has been changed to play Apr 28 08:00:01 squeezeplay: WARN applet.AlarmSnooze - AlarmSnoozeApplet.lua:279 notify_playerModeChange: - audioState is 0 Apr 28 08:00:01 squeezeplay: WARN applet.AlarmSnooze - AlarmSnoozeApplet.lua:116 notify_playerAlarmState received for LocalPlayer {Squeezebox Radio} with alarmState of active Apr 28 08:00:01 squeezeplay: WARN applet.AlarmSnooze - AlarmSnoozeApplet.lua:118 notify_playerAlarmState received: active 0 Unfortunately for good (i.e. without fallback alarm) alarm function you need the following working components: #1: a robust squeezeboxserver, that sends an alarm event at the right time (in your failing case 'too late' from the viewpoint of the radio - most probably because the Radios time was not in Sync to the server) #2: a robust stream for the alarm-tune (could be a local mp3 on your local server - most robust, or a stream from the net - I wouldn't choose MySB.com *g*) #3: if the stream comes from 'outside', then of course a working internet-connection. I do have a local server, so could take care of point #1). Actually #2 + #3 proved to be very robust for me. In the last month I had a fallback alarm just once - and that was because the internet was down (#3). Thats the curse of modern streaming requirements I guess :) And thanks to Marcs work I can rely on the fallback alarm if #1,#2,#3 is wrong, so I trust the Radio much more than in the <=7.4.1 times. Of course if anything from #1,#2,#3 isn't reliable one will get very annoyed because of the loud and disturbing regular fallback-alarm. But to be honest - I don't think the Radio should be blamed first - it does a very good job now in not failing to play some tune at all :D - but one has to see how the 'environmental' points from above can be made robust. -- bluegaspode 1x SB-Controller+Receiver (Duet), 1xSB-Boom. 1xSB-Radio Server (7.4.1) running on SheevaPlug (Ubuntu) with attached Western Digital MyBook Essential. Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] SB Radio audio fine on mysqueezebox.com but stutters on any SB Server???
Called support today. Narrowed it down to a messed up networking card. Took it back to Best Buy (5 days shy of 30 days haha lucky) and exchanged it based on Logitech advice. Sure enough new player works smoothas silk. Just like the last one did for weeks. Absolutely 0 stutter and only connected through mysqueezebox.com and also no stutter connecting through a local Squeezebox Server. Yep all wirelessly too. Let's hope this one lasts longer than 3 weeks. -- arosstyler arosstyler's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=37174 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77947 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio

One would think that a > radio with a computer inside would be smart enough to simulate an alarm > clock all by itself Correct. And agreed on all fronts. Many of the problems in the Radio software (because there are indeed many) stem from a couple of different angles. I know because I've delved into the code base quite deeply. While the alarm function is generally the most overtly seen to be problematic (for reasons involving criticality of the alarm function), that subsystem suffers from problems that are fundamentally more widespread in the Squeezebox Radio software foundation. The layers of functionality are not intuitively distributed, and the information passed between them doesn't always make sense or satisfy a need of an adjacent logic layer. Frankly, the interfaces and applications don't appear to have been coordinated in a fashion that makes a ton of sense. Much information is not easy to get to from the applet arena, and the Squeezebox central operating infrastructure (SqueezeOS, I think it's called - I've paid more attention to how it works) often acts and reacts in opaque ways that are neither foreseeable nor recognizable by applets. Since much of the Radio functionality is implemented at the applet layer, the lack of information often available to the applets makes it hard to build a lot of intelligence or fault tolerance into whatever particular functionality an applet owns. Additionally, serious shortcomings exist in the area of synchronization. Proverbially speaking, the left hand is often unaware of what the right hand is doing. An applet may be waiting for a local Radio software timer to expire and then start to play out a locally stored audio file (as in the case of the alarm system), while the server (whether MySB.com or SBS) is simultaneously sending an inbound message to the Radio which is itself determined to usurp the playout subsystem for its own purposes... This is exactly the primary issue, by the way, in the context of why alarms don't work right on the Radio. Overall, synchronization is a widespread and significant problem under the covers of the Radio. You'll see in another thread just updated recently that a particularly adept user has gleaned from the logfile that his Radio seemed to be talking to both his local SBS and public net based MySB.com at the same time. This happens frequently, and can be viewed in the perspective I shared above about synchronization problems within the Radio software itself. Those synchronization problems also exist across the Logitech SB network infrastructure as well. The left doesn't know what the right is doing... but they are both tweaking the same dial... Not a recipe for stability. Additionally, shared resources in general aren't handled the way they are typically in an embedded system. Of course this is my opinion, but then again I've built quite a large number of comparatively complex embedded systems over the years. These products included many of the same functional software blocks that are utilized in the Radio environment. The network application architecture is itself suspect in several areas. Again, the best example may be the alarm functionality - where the entirety of application logic outside of time synchronization and a streaming service call should reside local to the Radio implementation, yet where the server provides the actual primary alarm trigger via message to the Radio instead. Make no mistake, though, these types of problems aren't isolated in the Radio software. The volume handling is odd and crashes into itself too, when the Radio attempts to modify state locally even as some logic path separately invoked because of a server message is messing around with the same thing. The playout subsystem suffers from this problem in general, where you can't be confident from the applet space that what you've requested of the OS is being honored... There's more, but I'm sure everyone reading agrees that I've said plenty by now. It really is a shame, as the Radio is truly a fabulous piece of hardware and a great and compelling service platform. It would be a VERY COOL device if the software was thoughtfully built and the operation both stable and understandable. I'm starting to get the feeling that Logitech really doesn't really care about this product space. I truly believe they are squandering a huge prospective market of untapped consumers. At the current price point (which is also fabulous), and with the proliferation of both broadband and consumer 802.11 wireless ad
Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Problem with alarm sound
It's interesting that the log has the radio talking to mysqueezebox.com. I keep the radio connected to my local squeezebox server, not mysqueezebox I think that I read somewhere that the "natural" alarm sounds come from mysqueezebox? Could that be why it goes there? It's odd enough that an alarm function needs a server at all, but involving 2 different servers is beyond odd. Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Problem with alarm sound
Sorry - I just saw, that you are running on MySB.com so you can't provide server logs. One more question: what was the actual time you scheduled your alarm ? 05:14:00 ? MySqueezeBox is sending the events at 05:14:15 -> 05:14:18 ... so if the alarm is really at 05:14:00, MySB is behind full 15 seconds ! Then it wouldn't be surprising that the fallback alarm gets nervous and fires (typically it just waits about 10seconds) ! If you look at the logs from this guy: http://static.orf.at/podcast/oe1/mp3/OE1_journale_100426_fj6.MP3 you see that the same events are 'just' 0-2 seconds behind the actual alarm time - which would be the expected timing! I wonder if all this is MySB.com related ? If you tried it again then it really is a support-case as with the logs you can prove that MySB.com is too slow for proper alarms. On the other hand you could tweak the fallback-timer yourself (until the next firmware upgrade). You can change the file /usr/share/jive/applets/AlarmSnooze/AlarmSnoozeApplet.lua Near the end you will find the lines Code: -- get msecs between now and requested alarm -- add 10 secs for fallback timer to bias alarm toward server wakeup local sleepMsecs = self:_deltaMsecs(self.alarmNext + 10); Make the 10 a 20 in the last line :D -- bluegaspode 1x SB-Controller+Receiver (Duet), 1xSB-Boom. 1xSB-Radio Server (7.4.1) running on SheevaPlug (Ubuntu) with attached Western Digital MyBook Essential. Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] NEW roblem with alarm
you already found the cause. The radio thinks the stream is not playing - maybe because it didn't start fast enough - or the connection to the podcast at this time didn't give a good stream ? If I try the stream http://static.orf.at/podcast/oe1/mp3/OE1_journale_fj6.MP3 I get a 404 in my browser (is this the real URL - at least the radio wanted to get a file name 'OE1_journale_fj6.MP3' ?) If I look at the XML-File from your link there is a file http://static.orf.at/podcast/oe1/mp3/OE1_journale_100426_fj6.MP3 Thats a different filename than the radio wanted to get ?! How did you configure this podcast ? With the XML-file (never tried podcasts myself with the radio) ? I'd always start the alarm with simple things first, like normal internet-radio or mp3s from a local connection. There is also a connection timeout at 20:02:15 in your log. Maybe this is related ? I wonder if anyone else shares this problem: I have the Mediafly News & Politics channel saved as a preset. The newest podcasts appear at the top of the list; some of them such as CNN news are updated multiple times per day. Until quite recently (probably the 7.5 firmware but I can't be sure), I would touch the preset and it would start playing from the top of the list. This way I could instantly get the latest news update. Now it begins playing on the podcast following the one I last streamed, which might be well down the list and therefore older. Is this a bug or a feature? I much prefer the old way, at least for this particular channel. -- frb63 frb63's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=36148 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78005 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] How do I switch to MSB from SBS?
Radio > Settings > Home Menu > "switch to MySB.com" (it's near the bottom of the list) This will move "switch to MySB.com" to your Home Menu for easy switching between SBS and MySB. You can also get back to SBS by simply selecting My Music (SBS should be offered) -- toby10 toby10's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78003 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio
Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] NEW roblem with alarm
unfortunatly I have to agree that there seems to be something quite buggy at the moment - the SBR was already working fine but also since the last update its horrible! :-( attached you can find a logfile of my last alarm which fired at 20:00:00 I just see that the SBR changes to the fallback-alarm with the reason mentioned in line 50: "audio not in good shape while alarm is firing" for completeness => the mp3-file which should be played belongs to a pocast provided by an austrian radio-station the podcast can be found at http://static.orf.at/podcast/oe1/oe1_journale.xml any help would be appreciated best regards! simsboard +---+ |Filename: messages.log | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=9753| +---+ -- simsboard so far only 1x Squeezebox Radio with selfmade batterykit mainly used with mysb.com http://www.lastfm.de/user/weanabazi simsboard's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=33135 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77807 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio

i´ve downloaded the 7.5.1 beta and installed it on my WHS. Switched after my SB Radio from mySB.com to my own Server. My SB Radio found immediately a new Firmware and installed it. Once this FW-Update was done, the graduated background went away. But just usefull who own a SB Server. [SlimDevices: Radio] How do I switch to MSB from SBS?
Hi All Sorry for such a total newbie question but I've yet to find a simple way of switching from SBS to MSB using the Radio itself. I can do it from the SBS Web Control but would have though it could be done from the radio itself? I've added 'Switch Library' to the Radio's Home Screen but this will omly ever let me switch to SBS (My Library) when I'm in MSB. It won't let me switch back to MSB if I'm SBS. Does this question make sense? The logs would tell us dozens more things which just can't be expressed by your very coarse grained sentences about failures. Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] NEW roblem with alarm
As I said, it sould be very strange that this behaviour just begin with new firmware, no ? Just fefore, it worked well except the "ghost alarms". And why is it ok on my Boom ? This morning my radio was playing "nothing". It was on, on the display I can see the name of the radio stream but no sound, no back up alarm. I just select this radio from the preset : it is ok ! So if I had a problem with my connection I sould have backup alarm. Please, stop saying we are just not able to detect bug. We have a brain, whe have knowlegde too ? I'd suggest you don't bother, honestly. The current alarm implementation is obviously quite buggy and I strongly speculate it will not get better. On the contrary, I proffer that it will only get worse as modifications like this one are added (if Logitech even chooses to attempt such modifications, which I think unlikely and/or unwise at this point). Every feature enhancement like this one (despite the request's very reasonable character) ends up being a band-aid modification to the existing alarm implementation. Because the architecture of the alarm system is wrong (yes, I say that definitively and with absolute conviction), every modification to the current implementation proportionally increases the chances that a regression in operation will be introduced. You can see how unstable alarms are at present... If this feedback causes any consternation then please go do a search for all the work I did previously in the context of fixing the broken Radio alarm system before bothering to chastise me. Every time Logitech touches the alarm functionality it is regressed (as you can see through objective evaluation of feedback on this forum in the context of new firmware releases). There are multiple reasons for this, but the primary overriding reason is as follows: - The alarm system architecture is plain wrong. No amount of fiddling with either the server (MySB.com or SBS) or the client (Radio) is likely to resolve this situation, as that same fiddling is clearly introducing more regression problems than resolutions. This is typically the case when a client/server application of any kind is inappropriately architected at the outset. Some may dispute the fact that I fixed the alarm system once (as best as was possible, considering the inappropriate architecture that was already in place). Yet, irrespective of their protests (and of Logitech's modifications to my implementation, which I warned against), I did indeed band-aid the alarm system to work properly at one time for the firmware 7.4.1 release. Much of my alarm system band-aid implementation code remains in the existing distributed alarm system today (that implementation has been changed by Logitech, however). The reality is that no band-aid on the Radio firmware side would have worked for long, however (even if my band-aid had been unmodified before public release), while changes continued to the server side of alarm operation. There are too many variables at play in the Radio alarm system operation, and like any client/server application that is initially architected incorrectly it will invariably suffer from instability and creeping regression as changes are incrementally introduced. Re-architecting it wouldn't be such a difficult thing to do, but apparently Logitech lacks the combination of time and/or incentive to do so. I would do it myself, but frankly have already fixed the Radio alarm system once and am weary of beating my head against the wall. I won't volunteer again to do it on my own time... Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] 2 SB radios stutter when sync`d
this is probably a local issue - I stream sync'd to 4/5 players consistently from WHS - so the system works. I have seen stuttering in the past and the following changes have eliminated it:- 1) moved from wifi to Homeplug (though Boom remians wireless and doesn't affect performance 2) upgraded (and then replaced) router 3) upgraded memory in WHS box (the original HP MediaSmarts have just enough memory to run WHS but not an extra services). High signal strength doesn't guarantee good bandwidth - if a nearby channel also has high strength, it can 'interefere'. Try 'netstumbler' to see what is heppening in your wifi neighbourhood or temporarily wire both Radios (if they work okay wired then you have your culprit). -- DigitalMitch 2 * SB3, 1 * Boom, 2 * SBR, 1 * Radio and 1 * Touch controlled by IR, SBC [and iPeng on iPhone - wifi died!!] 7.5.0 on WHS on HP MediaSmart (EX470) upgraded to 2G RAM http://www.last.fm/user/digimich DigitalMitch's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15999 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77819 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio
Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Alarm and Sleep time combination
There should be, if you are running the Radio attached to the software server (rather than to MYSB.com). First set the Alarm timeout for the amount of time you want to hear music for. Option 1 is to install the PowerSave plugin. The Alarm will only run for the time set in the alarm (default is 60 mins, but I have mine set for 90). Then set the PowerSave plugin to switch off the player on Pause or Stop after 15 mins. This will switch the Radio off. Option 2 if your server supports it is to install the Server Power Control plugin which can suspend your server after a certain period of idle time. So I have it set to suspend the server (i.e. switch off the software) after 40 mins if all players are idle. It will restart by pressing the power button on the Radio. You can also combine 1 and 2. -- Siduhe Who am I on 'LAST.FM' (http://www.last.fm/user/siduhe)? "-Siduhe Loved Tracks radio got the thumbs up.
