Re: [RBW] Who's ridden a Steamroller and can compare to the Quickbeam?

2017-10-23 Thread Grant @ Rivendell
In about 6 wks, by about Dec 10, we'll have 20 total/6 sizes UP TO 59cm of
the Frank Jones Sr, a singlespeed frame designed for Blue Lug, our Tokyo
dealer. We made 20 extras for us.
• seat lug (new socket style, but made for 3-deg upslope) and head lugs
(custom style)
• fillet-braed bb
• 28.6mm min triangle tubes (seat and top tbes usually are, but for FRANK,
the downtube is, too).
• clears 38mm tire. clears 33.333 w/fender (as long as feners are not
aluminum)
• 120 rear spacing, new rear dropouts---track style...two eyes for rak &
fendr. No der tab. Angle like Quickbeam's, long, too.
* brake reach is 59mm (necessary for 38mm tire). Brake options? Tektro 559,
Paul or Compass centerpull, or new Dia-Compe 610 centerpull (not out yet)
• stay & fork rack mounts

Sizes and QTY we're getting:
53cm (7)
55cm (5)
57cm (6)
59cm (7)

The frames are designed to be comfortable fits with drop bars, but it's
more of a classic fit than a RIVFIT 2017.8. In our experience, any drop-bar
bike can take an Albatross bar easily,,,so FRANK can, too.

Sizing by PBH:
Mark's PBH is 82 and he'd ride a 53. Mine's 85 and I'm getting a 59 that I
wish was a 58.

This is a paved-road, light-load singlespeed frame, not a "Manny bike" !
More info will follow. It's going to cost about $1,400 for
frame-fork-hs-seat post (27.2)

[RBW] Trigger shifters on swept-back bars - Jones or others

2017-10-23 Thread Joe Bernard
That's a nice shifter, Melanie, but I agree it's a bad fit on Chocos..I tried a
similar shifter on a Choco-Moose. The only way it sorta worked was to move up
on the curve, which then felt far away and awkward for me. I think they work
better on bars that don't sweep straight back.

[RBW] Re: Trigger shifters on swept-back bars - Jones or others

2017-10-23 Thread Ed Carolipio
I've used Deore 3x9 shifters on a 710 Jones Loop and a Bosco, and it works
well for both.

I found the best position for shifters on the Jones is pretty darn close to
the loop. A superlong grip (like the ESI Chunky, which they sell) or just
bar tape gives a myriad of hand positions across the outside of the bar,
along with the associated shift in saddle position and/or angle to the
back. The indicator window on the Shimano does sneak up over a part of the
"loop" portion, which may restrict the secondary position on the inside
grips on the Jones bar.

On the Bosco, because of the wrist position, the triggers are about a 1/4
turn rotated with respect to the ground. If you see folks with pictures of
the Ergo grip positioning on the Bosco - Grant has some photos posted on
the Blug with his wrapped Dutch paddle grips,
https://www.rivbike.com/blogs/peeking-through-the-knothole/last-one-of-march-2017

- just imagine how the triggers have to rotate around CW on right and CCW
on left to be under the brake levers.

[RBW] Re: Trigger shifters on swept-back bars - Jones or others

2017-10-23 Thread Clayton.sf
Use triggers on Jones bars for both the dropper post and the 11 speed
shifter (integrated via i-spec with the brake lever).

Trigger on Choco- and Bosco-mooses too. They work great and there is enough
real estate on the bars to make them not get in the way.
On the Choco I ran the shifter right by the right side intersections of the
"V" bar and the main bar. On the Bosco I run the shifter on the right side
about 2/3 down right before the bar bends into the flat bar portion.

Personally I like triggers over bar ends as they are in a less vulnerable
position. Plus a lot of miles are on bumpy terrain where indexed shifting
works better for me. Less trimming and more control since I can actually
keep my hands on the bars while shifting.

Best,
Clayton Scott

[RBW] Re: Who's ridden a Steamroller and can compare to the Quickbeam?

2017-10-23 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
If I remember correctly they did state in the Blug that "a few" of the Blue
Lug singlespeeders (Senor Frank Jones, I think) would likely be available
in the US but not to expect any tall ones. The Rosco Roads have Simpleone
forks and the same clearances as QB/Simpleone but not the long track
ends... you could get around this by using two chainrings with the same
tooth difference as a Dos Eno freewheel which keeps the wheel position the
same in either ratio. I've done this with my Milwaukee Orange One
singlespeed using 42/44 rings and 17/19 dos eno (42x19 or 44x17)

first Riv the value of the complete pre-sale and the timing of it's release
were a major deciding factor. In hindsight, had I waited for the Mega
Bubbe to be finalized I'd still have needed a set of wheels/tires which
would put the total cost well above the Clem complete and life events would
have likely ruled out the entire expense at that time anyway. However, the
temptation of a 64 Clem L frameset (as well as the large Hubbuhubbuh!) are
still certainly high with future family biking in mind.

[RBW] Re: Brooks B68 for sale

2017-10-23 Thread lconley
Brooks no longer makes the B-68 and the Rivet equivalent (the Loveland)
weighs almost a pound more than a B-68, might as well get a B-67 at that
weight. I no longer am comfortable on something as narrow as a B-17 or
C-17. The C-19 and Rivet Loveland are about the only wide,
non-sprung,single rail saddles at this point. The B-68 seem to me to be
more comfortable than either, so I buy them when I can.

[RBW] Trigger shifters on swept-back bars - Jones or others

2017-10-23 Thread Joe Bernard
I don't have triggers on my Jones Loop, but I've used them (Shimano RapidFire)
on a bunch of bars with a similar sweepback. I think they work well this way,
the front trigger you pull back with your index finger is actually a little
easier to reach at this angle.

I've used them on Albatross, too, but that was less successful.

There a ton of room on the Jones bars and on the Ospreys. I use Shimano 9 speed
on the Joe with Jones. They work great. I got a deal too good to pass up on a
1x crank, and someone gave me a brand new 11-42 cassette for free, so my Clem

anti-Riv, but I’m looking forward to it.

[RBW] Jones 2.5 Loop on Clem L

2017-10-23 Thread Joe Bernard
The bar does work well on this frame, but needs a very short stem to work with
the longish virtual toptube. This would be true on old mountain bikes, too. I
have a Thomson threadless 40cm on the way from Jones Bikes, V-O doesn't make an
open-face 31.8 quill that short.

The rack is Nitto Big Back Rack - Medium, which answers the question, "Should I
really spend that much money on a load-bearing piece I'll use all the time and
will be a major focus of attention when people see the bike riding buy?" YES!

They ARE spendy, the moreso in Canadian dollars. I have several bikes but only

[RBW] Re: Huge Rosco Mixte

2017-10-23 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
These Rosco mega mountain mixtes look terrific. I had eagerly anticipated the
details of the larger Rosco Bubbes but when the 65cm mega Clem H was announced
and after an email exchange with Grant I determined the Clem Complete was right
for me at the time. This was before the specs of this model were officially
released but he said enough for me to know they’d be great and to make want one
of each anyway. Then my wife and I found out we were expecting our first child
a few months after taking delivery of my Clem, which is now expected to be
converted for baby hauling duty come spring, so now I’m rethinking the step
through thing all over again with the recently announced 64cm Clem L. I’ll
probably see how the H works out first but kind of kicking myself for not going
Rosco now that I desire the step through a little more. Enjoy.

[RBW] Re: Rivs with the Jones Loop/Bend H-Bar (Map/Ahearne too)

2017-10-23 Thread Brendan McD
Tim,

I also feel like I'm always in a search for the "perfect" handlebar, and
frequently find reasons to change them. I currently have the widest Bosco
bar on my Hunq, which is great, but does come waaay back and doesn't do me
many favors when riding off road. I've also happily used the Bullmoose,
which fits much like my favorite bar: the Simworks Getaround. It's wide,
the grip angle fits me perfect, and it has plenty of space for levers and
shifters. Definitely check their bars out. They have some funky shapes, but
are made by Nitto and therefore I think they mostly still look "right" on a
Riv.

I also have stashed 710mm Jones bars and 31.8mm On One Mary's. I'm also in
Portland and would happily invite you to come check out any bars in my
collection. Feel free to message me off-list if you're interested.

[RBW] FS: XL Singular Gryphon F/F/EBB

2017-10-23 Thread Reid Echols
(Cross posted with iBOB)

This one’s a catch and release for me; I bought the full bike from Philip
Williamson here on the list, but am finding I prefer suspension for the
rocks and roots here in Austin. Will likely build up a Surly or something
similar, but my loss is your gain!

Frame has a few marks of beausage, but generally clean and free of dents.
It rides beautifully, like a lighter faster Fargo; just the right amount of
flex, and it takes 27.5 x 2.8 tires easily thanks to the EBB; no strike
issues even with a 180 crank.

Asking $400 shipped in the lower 48. Includes frame, fork, and Phil wood
eccentric B.B. shell (no headset, but I can thrown in a Cane Creek 40 for
whatever it costs to have it knocked off the old frame it's on).

[RBW] Jones 2.5 Loop on Clem L

2017-10-23 Thread masmojo
I like that bar and it looks great on the Clem(entine), but yeah finding an
appropriate stem may be a challenge. Have you checked out Velo-Orange? That
handlebar bar looks ideal for early 90's mountain bikes that typically had long
& low front ends. It might be ideal for my Fat City Monster Fat.

Actually, what really caught me attention was the rack! Which one is that?
I've had difficulty finding a rack that fits my Clementine as well as that one
does!

Re: [RBW] Trigger shifters on swept-back bars - Jones or others

2017-10-23 Thread Tim Gavin
I'm using 3x9 Shimano MTB trigger shifters with the Jones Loop 710 bars on
my '88 Schwinn KOM. There's plenty of real estate on the ends of the 710s
to fit brake levers, shifters, and grips.
Narrower bars may not have enough real estate; I have a set of early Jones
Cut Loop bars in 560 mm which don't have enough space there.

The angle of the under-grip shift levers isn't as good as it would be on a
flat (un-swept) MTB bar, but it works fine for Just Riding Around and
occasional trails.

I could take a picture later if you'd like to see the setup (quill adapter
to threadless stem, FYI).

[RBW] Trigger shifters on swept-back bars - Jones or others

2017-10-23 Thread A CT Cyclist
Funny you should ask, I've been thinking about the same thing. I'm looking at
the Sun race trigger shifters for 10 speed road because they look clean and
would be compatible with my shimano road derailleur. Has anyone used trigger
shifters from them. If I was building the bike up from scratch I think I would
go with Dram triggers.

[RBW] Trigger shifters on swept-back bars - Jones or others

2017-10-23 Thread Melanie
Has anyone found a trigger shifter that works well with swept-back bars? I may
have to install bar ends or go the oddly mounted thumb shifter route. But
triggers near the brake levers would be ideal. Thanks.

Re: [RBW] Rivs with the Jones Loop/Bend H-Bar (Map/Ahearne too)

2017-10-23 Thread Jay Connolly
Benz, the Joe has been that way for a couple of months. I used a drop bar for a
while but have enjoyed the bike much more with the Jones. I use the bike as a
hauler at our cottage. Lots of bad pavement on narrow roads, with bail-out
roadside trails for when the traffic is heavy, so the bike takes lots of
knocks. It also has me yanking and pushing on the bars when I stand, and I’m a
super-duper Clyde. I had the same initial reaction as you to the two-bolt
system but have had no issues. I bought the Joe to be my touring bike, but life
got in the way of a planned tour last summer. Will definitely tour with the
Jones bar.
