[RBW] Re: Ride Report: Eastern Cape, North Island, New Zealand

2019-04-03 Thread John Rinker
Thanks Tom! Yes, I’ve been traveling for so long I’ve gotten the whole shebang
pretty well sorted.

I pack my bike in an almost identical manner to how I received it from Riv.
When I first opened the box from them I took a few photos of the way they had
packed it up and have pretty much followed that method every time. I still have
the original box and have used it lots (not only does Riv make solid bikes, the
also source solid boxes!). I recently switched the original box because one
airline didn’t care for the width of the box. Now I use two 29er boxes nested
so I can get an extra 3” of height the my 62cm Hinq, now christened ‘Sweet as’,
required.

As I travel internationally often, the bike is counted as a piece of my luggage
as long as it doesn’t exceed weight limits. When I traveled to New Zealand, I
had the bike and a duffle with the rest of my gear, and paid nothing extra.
Often this is the case. When I flew home from Tuscon after completing the
Divide, the bike fit in a single 29er box and cost me $25 on Southwest.

So far, everything has worked out well for me with no damage to the bike or my
gear.

Cheers, John

I got to ride that very bike when I visited Leah last month. It it rode
beautifully and looks great now (although I thought it looked quite nice
then.) The blue is deep and rich. I think now the only "problem " you'll
have is when the son with the little Clem out grows it, and wants to ride
the big Clem.

In the meantime, enjoy your Betz alternative and please keep telling your

Re: [RBW] recommendation for a flared drop bar with 25.4 clamp size

2019-04-03 Thread Steve Palincsar
How much of a flare do you want?  The Compass/Rene Herse Maes Parallel
has a slight flare: the 44cm bar is 42 across the levers, 44 at the
ends.  I like the shape a lot (and so does my arthritic left thumb,
which isn't triggered by this bar at all).

What width are you looking for? I think the RM-13 comes in both 25.4 and
26.0 variants, is a drop bar and has a really nice shape, IMO. Much more
traditional, Noodle-type shape, but with more flare in the drops. I know
I've seen them in 25.4, but maybe only in the narrower sizes?

Blue Lug in Japan also sells a compact Noodle (same shape, shorter reach,
less drop) with a 25.4 clamp.

If you can't find what you need in 25.4, you can find a Nitto Dirt Drop in
80/26.0 which is otherwise pretty much the same as the Periscopa.

Can that really be contributing to one frameset being more ideal for drop

[RBW] Wind, fixed gears, drop bars, and old ladies, nice and nasty

2019-04-03 Thread Patrick Moore
It is our windy season (but we don't have winds like Deacon's winds) and I
had to ride to the Corrales main post office because the closer branch one
was closed for lunch. And because the wind was from the North at steady
20-something with gusts to mid-30s, I had to detour a couple of miles
instead of riding NNE along the too-narrow main Corrales road. So, almost
10 miles outbound of which 7 were either north or NW.

I debated moving the chain to the 19 t cog, but decided to give the 17 a
try (17/19 Dingle, 22 fw on flip side; 70/63/54 gi) and found it not too
bad, except during the worst gusts (had to stand a few times on the flat)
as long as I hunkered down in the hooks and took it easy. 11.47 mph average
outbound, clock running.

I did take Corrales Road homeward, south, and could have used a gear well
into the 80s.

17.25 miles total and entirely enjoyable! So much does depend on attitude!
It took me years to learn not to fight wind. I guess I've learned.

While at Sprout's, the old lady in front of me inquired about the Rivendell
and admired the VO "hammered" fenders. I've found that there seem to be 2
kinds of old ladies in grocery stores: Nice old ladies, who are polite even
if they look askance at the more aggressively styled riding sunglasses* (as
well they might; sly, offensive things; I wear them only to protect my
eyes)' and the nasty sort who try to cut in front of you; to one of whom my
brother, youthful then, and long ago, said: "You may be old, but that
doesn't give you the right to be nasty."

Patrick "you meet the nicest people on a Rivendell", who is old enough to
remember the Honda ad.

"nother brother anecdote: Once long ago, in an LA office building elevator
in full riding regalia, a woman told him, "My, you look forbidding!"

Re: [RBW] Re: New bike day. 56cm 650B Atlantis

2019-04-03 Thread Bill Lindsay
I said the 56cm 650B Atlantis was a perfect bike and that I wouldn't change
a thing.

Mike Williams asked for a comparison with the Joe Appaloosa, which is an
excellent bike. There are a few small but notable differences that make
the Joe Appaloosa a very good bike for Bill Lindsay, and make the Atlantis
a perfect bike for Bill Lindsay.

They both ride great. The 55cm Joe Appaloosa is ideally set up with Choco
bars, in my opinion. For me, drop bars are just better, and the top tube
length of the Joe Appaloosa would have made a drop bar setup goofy for me.
The 56cm Atlantis has a slightly shorter top tube and is perfect with drop
bars and a 9cm stem. The 55cm Joe Appaloosa has 700c wheels. When you run
it with stout wheels and tires, those heavy wheels make the bike more
cruiserish and less agile, in my opinion. The 650B wheels of the Atlantis
are far more preferable in handling. It is possible that lightweight 700c
wheels and tires could get some of that back. My preferred agility in 650B
could easily be countered by another person's stability in 700c. Finally,
I really dislike toe clip overlap. I really dislike it and avoid it
whenever I can. I bought the Appaloosa thinking it wouldn't have TCO for
me, because it had a really long front center. It had less TCO than my
700c 58cm Atlantis that I used to have, but it still happened, and fully
loaded on campouts it was a problem that I don't want anymore. 650B bikes
in my size never have TCO.

So, if I still had the Appaloosa, I'd still ride it and it would still be
great, but I would wish it was 650B and I would wish that it had a slightly
shorter top tube for a better drop bar setup. The Atlantis is perfect.
The fact that it is an instantly recognizeable ICON of a machine also makes
the Atlantis perfect, in my eyes. I also prefer less seatpost showing on a
56 from the 55 Appaloosa. The original Atlantis was a masterpiece. I'm
now convinced the MIT Atlantis is flat out better (for me).

[RBW] Re: PSA: 2 Gus Boots For Sale on Riv Site

2019-04-03 Thread Max S
Staying abroad for a bit and seeing a lot of electric "bikes" and scooters
all over the place. All on disc brakes, most on small diameter wheels with
fat tires, many making noise upon application. Extra weight of discs,
"harsh ride", blah blah blah – all of that is mitigated by a kW-hrs of
on-board free power. People ride those darn things in the roads, on
sidewalks, with grocery bags and child seats... Some ride them to the train
station, park them at the rack, yank out the battery pack, and go catch the
train. Other two-wheeled commuters fold down the mast of their Bird
electric scooter and get on. Those are folks with disposable income, or
folks that don't have a car. People in the city riding regular
human-powered bikes are poor students, and even those are switching to
rent-by-the-minute electric scooters. 'Cos if we're really thinking
"practicality," what people want is the quickest way of getting from A to B
without getting sweaty.

That whole market for "wheels" and two-wheeled vehicle accoutrements is
growing much faster in the battery-powered segment than the regular
human-powered bike market. Parts availability is driven by the scale of
demand and growth... Light rims with brake surfaces seem to be on the wane
compared to disc wheels – just a bit cheaper to make, multiplied by number
of units.

And it's really too bad, because for the pleasure of efficient riding of an
optimally light, long-lived, trouble-free, human-powered velocipede, rim
brakes and corresponding rims are a marvelously evolved system. Disc brakes
are the equivalent of an SUV, if you ask me... Unnecessary and inelegant.
Yes, they make it easier for occupants to get in and out, and give them a
false sense of superiority / security by virtue of a higher perch, but tire
traction remains the ultimate limiter, and waining driver attention even
more so. To some extent, so are some of the overbuilt, double-tt Riv
models, but there at least you're gaining longevity of service that will
allow the bike to be perfectly (field) serviceable and casually inspectable
50 years from now. And that's more along the lines of what Riv is going
for, so why gang up on them for it? Yes, there's maybe a continuum between
curly lugs and tig-welded joints, between long-reach calipers (dual pivot
is already a compromise, no?) and discs, but do we know how many sales is
Riv really missing due to lack of disc brakes on GBW?.. Maybe a lot, and
maybe that's also why BMW & Porsche started making SUVs, but that's just a
temporary stop along the way of windowless, monitor-clad, self-driving pods
with high bandwidth connections.

Anyhow, if you really want a disc-equipped GBW, would it be that difficult
to order a Surly or Soma fork for it and try it out?..

I'm about 200 miles into the Atlantis now, and I'm convinced it is a

there is not another <$1500 frameset out there that is intended for the

[RBW] WTB: 61cm Roadini frameset

2019-04-03 Thread Reid Echols
Hi folks,

Just curious if anyone has a tall Roadini they're looking to move on, as
I'm currently short a roadish bike in the stable. Funds are a bit tight
with a recent move, but I thought I'd see what's out there (and see if any
opportunities for mutually interesting trades might be afoot--the parts bin
runneth over).

If you have something in the same spirit (and are in the 96+ PBH range),
let me know--if nothing else it's fun to look!

Thanks,
Reid in Austin

I’m at REI but I can’t get my Clem back because the tech is in love with it and

He expressed all sorts of interest in it and had never heard of Riv, so we
chatted while he put the finishing touches on it and he is ALL KINDS OF

Update: He’s back and said “This bike rides BEAUTIFULLY!”

- Sam James (couple different locations)
- if you are in the west end, stop in at Cherry Bomb on Roncesvalles. Was
my fav place and usually has a Mariposa or some other neat bike hanging on

Thanks for these! I sorta figured that biking would really just be an easy
way to get around the area for transport. I'm coming from Chicago, and

[RBW] Re: PSA: 2 Gus Boots For Sale on Riv Site

2019-04-03 Thread ian m
Of course talking about disc brakes on this bike is an exercise in
futility, but it is interesting to consider their use in the industry today
and in the future. For me, I look at a company like Crust Bikes and see
more or less a humongous bite out of Riv's market share. The Evasion is
basically a MIT Atlantis with disc brakes. The Romanceur looks like an
earlier iteration Riv bike, just with disc brakes. Riv is now even using
the same overhyped lifestyle icon as a marketing tool. Sure there's no
reason for the two companies to be at odds, and some may say a rising tide
lifts all boats, but it also seems like a HUGE loss and missed opportunity
for Riv to have grown their ridership and offer bikes that obviously a lot
of people are interested in riding.

Here's a youtube video, which might make written instructions easier to
understand:

There are probably better ones, particularly for your desire to raise the

be necessary to unstick the stem.)

BTW: I'd recommend looking at your cables to make sure you have enough

Good luck!

[RBW] Re: Toronto Recommendations.

2019-04-03 Thread Thomas Blak
You will be really close to the Distillery District
which to me is the best part of
Toronto for visitors.

Kensington has been mentioned and it is right beside China Town #1, so you
should check that out.

Riding along the lake can be quite enjoyable. If you ride west you should
go to at least the Humber River. If you are feeling adventurous ride north
along the Humber River to Old Mill. The have a really nice High Tea if you
are riding with someone else. Hoopdriver is not that far from Old Mill. It
really is the best bike shop in the city. Also on the way to Hoopdriver is
one of the best bakeries in the city. French bakery with a Japanese twist.
Patisserie
27 , has the best croissants outside of
France, plus the other goodies with Japanese fusion.

Another nice ride is to the Brickworks
. This is an interesting
ride because it is like you are in the country but you are actually in the
middle of the city. Totally accessible by bike paths.

For restaurants, there is so much to chose from. Toronto is multicultural,
so you can chose any food you want. I tried Syrian food last week and loved
it. My recommendations are Greek Town along
the Danforth. My recommendation is Pantheon
and make sure you order the flaming cheese (Saganaki). My favorite
restaurant is Bistro Camino. Japanese owned French restaurant with Japanese
fusion. Not really a place to ride too but the subway will take you there.

Great neighbourhoods are abundant. The Junction is worthy of a visit but I
am biased I live there. There are craft breweries if you are into that
stuff, and other great restaurants. Ossington and Dundas West
neighbourhood, also have great restaurants. Korean Town if you fancy Korean
food. Little Italy along College Street is another Toronto landmark.

Here is a quote from Christopher Hume a writer from the Toronto Star
newspaper.

Think of tourists who come here and visit only the Eaton Centre, CN Tower
and, say, Yonge-Dundas Square. They could return home and claim to have
seen the sites, but did they experience Toronto? We understand why they
wouldn’t bother with North York or Etobicoke, but what about Queen West,
Roncesvalles, Ossington or the Danforth? Not only do these places offer
lots of character and appeal, they are ideal for observing Torontonians up
close.
