Re: [RBW] Re: Shimano Deore XT BR-M750 Direct Pull V Brakes

2023-03-09 Thread Josiah Anderson
Joe is right, you want long pull levers for v-brakes. A canti (short pull)
lever can sometimes kind of work with a v-brake, and I've done that before
to make the brakes exceptionally powerful, but the lever feel will be quite
spongy and the pads will be very close to the rim. It's not a recommended
combination unless you're specifically trying to do something strange and
you know exactly what you're getting into. Not sure what your LBS was
thinking recommending that; there was probably some miscommunication or
something.

Re: [RBW] Re: PONCHOS!!!

2023-03-09 Thread Patrick Moore
IME thumb loops, or perhaps just using the loops for your thumbs, works
better than looping a cape to the bar. (Fortunately my Campmore has those.)

Yes to waist straps; my current Campmore had elastic leg loops instead of a
waist strap that were very awkward to get into. I cut them off and sewed a
sufficient weight of small stacks of large washers at 2 or 3 points along
the bottom rear seam, and this works (for me at any rate) even better than
a waist strap. Pull the poncho over your head, stick thumbs in loops, get
on bike, rear naturally falls to cover saddlebag.

Next modification: cut off hood, since I have a Grundens hat.

2023-03-09 Thread Mackenzy Albright
Just FYI when I installed honjo smooth 62 fenders on my clementine they fit
width wise, but decided to run a 2mm wider BB to avoid the need of cutting
the fender for chain rub. Or maybe I ran a BB spacer? I can't remember off
the top of my head now that I type this. But the included riv BB rubbed
*slightly* on the fender when in the small chain wheel and largest rear cog
and didn't feel like cutting up the fender.

Re: [RBW] Re: PONCHOS!!!

2023-03-09 Thread Edwin W
Not to rub it in, but yes, the Riv Grundens poncho is the best ever. So
sorry they do not have them any more. Maybe they need to do another run,
but I am sure then they would be $$$.

I have the Grundens, but also have a Vaude Valdipino
 that
is very easy to stash somewhere (I keep one at work) in case something
comes up.

Re: [RBW] Re: Widest fenders that easily fit a Joe Appa?

2023-03-09 Thread DavidP
Re-radiusing aluminum fenders is possible
, the concern in this
case is that the VO 63mm fenders are already as wide as will fit. I suppose
it may possible to do the "widening" on most of the fender, leaving the
places where it would hit frame/fork alone, and this line from the linked
article may suggest that could work "You don't need to do a lot at a time.
Little bits over the length of the fender can decrease the radius enough to
work."

even a front basket, while still keeping the hands free to (maybe) signal.

Paul, your ride sounds like a lot of fun. Thanks for all the images. I like
the spontaneity and variety of terrain/neighborhoods you explored. Reminds

Re: [RBW] Re: PONCHOS!!!

2023-03-09 Thread Slin
@Luke - Right now I use a Cleverhood because I already have it. I probably
wouldn't buy it again because they're so pricey and a bit over-engineered
(tech-fabric, and magnetic arm holes).

If I were looking for a replacement, I'd look at the Carradice waxed
canvas, or the Blue Lug Fairweather Poncho first. But I wish they came in
high viz colors/designs.

I can assure you that water pools in the valley between your arms when
riding hoods on drop bars. I rode many miles watching the pretty color
swirls from the oils (petrochemical?) leaching from the material in the
puddle between my forearms, and emptying the puddle (during heavy rain)
every few hundred yards. This happens more with heavy ponchos like the
Duxback that don't flutter quite as much as lighter ones.

Leah,

Yes, that is me in those photos! Pops and I have been riding together
pretty much since I was born. I celebrated my 1st birthday on a bike tour
and never really stopped. I don't know how many miles we logged together,
but I imagine it would qualify for an around the world patch. Pops
introduced me to the Rivendell Reader when I was in high school, and now I
ride the black and cream canti-Hillborne he posted.

[RBW] WTB ~55cm Atlantis 3/MIT

2023-03-09 Thread Tyler McClure
Seeking a 55ish cm Atlantis, preferably the new geometry. I have access to
one brand new frame(+S&H), from a member of this group, but I would like to
potentially find a used frame or complete. If i can't find one in the near
future, I will be contacting the LBS that has the brand new frame in stock.
I have been searching for awhile now and have not had any luck. I have
posted on the FB group and use Search Tempest everyday. Let me know what
you might have access to!

Thank you everyone that has provided me with very valuable bike information
in the past,

2023-03-09 Thread Paul (GlennsBikeGarage)
Doug,

I'm currently installing the Honjo H80 62mm smooth fenders on my daughter's
51cm Joe Appaloosa (650b) with 42mm Grand Bois tires. These fenders fit
without any special bending, cutting, or manipulation and I would consider
these the widest fender that will fit. Hope that helps.

Re: [RBW] Re: PONCHOS!!!

2023-03-09 Thread reca...@gmail.com
I've used the waxed canvas Carradice poncho for a little while now. It
works great and have been pleasantly surprised with how durable the waxing
has been. The only downsides I see are that it's a bit heavy to carry
around off the bike and the straps can be a little fussy to use. The only
other thing that keeps me from recommending it to everyone is that if you
ride upright bars like any of the Riv variants, the water will pool between
the bars. Not a big deal but it happens as these seem to be designed more
for drop bars? All minor niggles for me in the end as it works better than
any rain jacket I've used.
