[RBW] Re: Do you ever find yourself tempted by brifters?
It's more a point of aesthetics and nostalgia for me. When I started seriously riding again in 2006 I bought a bike that came with brifters. Loved 'em. When I built up my Hillborne in 2010 I installed bar end shifters, mostly because my aunt had a 10 speed when I was a kid that had bar end shifters and I've always wanted them since. I actually hated them for about the first 500 miles or so. Now I love them and sometimes think about how hard it was for me to get used to them. Since then I've added the Tektro TRP brake levers with all the little pretty holes drilled in them. I could never get rid of those and they are not brifters so I'm keeping the bar ends. All that said I'm building up a second bike. Also steel but a "go fast"? It has a lot of modern aspects and I just felt brifters were the way to go. Not quite finished yet but on the rack I love them and how they shift. Having used both I don't for see any problem switching between the two and I'm sure I will thoroughly enjoy both. [RBW] Re: New Silver or Grand Cru Crankset?
I have Gran Cru on my Hillborne. It's a double. I had to use a 122mm spindle and even then added a 2-3mm spacer to the drive side. It JUST barely clears the derailleur. I think I rode it a while with a 118mm spindle and the spacer. Made it work but the 122 is really better. The new build I'm doing (not a Riv) with the DaVinci cranks I'm using requires a 103mm spindle which was quite shocking and disbelievable to me. [RBW] Re: Question re Decal Removal
The decal on my seat tube is cracking and peeling off as well. Been doing that for a long time. Recently I noticed a little of the paint coming off where the decal used to be. About two days later I realized what's causing it. When I come home the bike comes indoors and gets hung up on the wall by the rear wheel. Always the same way. And I always pick it up by the seat tube with my left hand. It's the wedding ring. As I lift the bike and the tube moves in my hand my wedding ring scratches right across that decal. I don't know if this sort of thing is happening to you but could be. Brian P. [RBW] Re: Klean Kanteen Conversion Questons
I use a 16 oz insulated for my coffee on my daily commute most every day. I do use the sippy cup lid with no problems but it needs to be on the seat tube bottle rack or yes it will leak. I also use some of the 27 oz water bottles. Not insulated. Both the 16 oz insulated and the 27 oz uninsulated fit absolutely wonderfully in my King Cage Iris water bottle cages. I LOVE the King Cage Iris water bottle cage. Regular plastic water bottles fit super snug. It's beautiful, well made. Made in the USA. More details: I am now converting to using Klean Kanteen bottles (from the “glass” lined things Specialized makes) after 2/3rd of my bottles popped out of my standard cages last fall and I need to replace then anyway, as well as hearing the reports from folks here of how much better Iris cages hold bottles on trails, washboard, etc. Between insulated and single-walled, and the larger bottles there seem to be some great options for various uses., I’m thinking: (1) insulated 20 oz. bottle: mostly to help keep things cool in summer (I drink very little when it’s below freezing, and so seldom that it would be frozen anyway on a longer ride, without being inside my jacket. Also as my coffee/tea mug when bikepacking. (2) uninsulated 28 oz. bottle: for daily ride increased volume of capacity, and for boiling water over the firebox when bikepacking. (1) uninsulated 40 or 64 oz. with velcro on cage using Irish straps to secure it for bikepacking and extra water capacity. Suggestions on wear to strap this beastie? On the Hunqapillar, this gives me up to 76 oz. for daily rides, 140 oz. capacity for bikepacking (plus a 100 oz bladder if needed, but it’s hard to use and tastes plasticy.) Thoughts, suggestions? Re: [RBW] Broken Crank
The start of the break does look like it's along a machining line. In fact, it almost follow's it perfectly however there is no step up there. There is a step up on the crank just before it but the site of the fracture is a smooth curved transition up to the spider with a little machining. I examined the crank on the left side very closely and (IMHO) it's in great condition. It does look and feel a bit more polished then the crank that failed. - Brian On Friday, February 13, 2015 at 11:45:22 AM UTC-8, Tim McNamara wrote: On Feb 12, 2015, at 2:31 AM, Benedikt neutral...@comcast.net javascript: wrote: I seem to remember seeing a similar post to this a few weeks/months ago but here it is ... Do ALL cranks have a life span? These are an aluminum alloy. Here's a pretty good picture of the break - https://www.flickr.com/photos/neutralbuoyancy/16320815710/ That looks like it may have failed along a machining line, with the crack initiating where there was a step-up from the flat of the back of the arm to the curve up to the spider. You can see another line between the arm and the spider. It may have been enough to cause a stress riser, especially if the alloy was not well-chosen. The VO site indicates it is 7075 but does not indicate whether it is one of the heat-treated varieties; this seems to be a pretty standard alloy for bike cranks. These sorts of failure are very, very serious and can in fact be fatal, if the crank breaks and dumps you in front of a moving vehicle- they almost always break when you are standing on them. I would examine the replacement crank very closely before installing it to check for machining ridged, lines, etc. Looking at the photos on the VO site, the machining looks quite clean and well-polished. You want to see no abrupt transitions. All cranks do have a lifespan, in part because that is the nature of aluminum- it cracks after enough repeated load cycles. Once a crack starts on the face of the material, it propagates through the metal. Thinking back over the last 6 months or so I do seem to remember an occasional tink sort of sound and feel in the downward stroke of the right crank. [RBW] Busses/Bike thieves
A friend of mine witnessed this yesterday. A man put his bike on the front rack of one of our Metro busses here in Seattle then got on the bus. A second man then took the guy's bike off the rack and rode away on it. STOLE IT! Right of the front of the bus. The bus driver said that was the second time that's happened today. I saw a beautiful Atlantis on one of those racks as I rode into work this morning and I feel like I should give you all a warning. This is what it's come to. If you're putting your bike on the bus stay up front where you can keep an eye on it. Also we thought perhaps if you locked the back wheel with a u lock they wouldn't be able to ride it at least. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Groupsets. Shimano, Campy, etc.
Dreaming about building up a new bike is what started this discussion. I've been using bar end shifters (friction) for 4 years now and over 25,000 miles of riding (most commuting) I've noticed I can easily get 10,000 miles out of a cheap hub or BB. I had a Shimano Sora shifter fail (before the bar ends) after about 10,000 miles. I think that's good mileage for the price and I never had a problem with shifting, however I'm not used to anything more costly then that. [RBW] Numbers on Forks
I had my bike nearly completely disassembled and in a box for airplane transport so after returning I took it upon myself to just pull the front fork and inspect/regrease the headset. Anyway I noticed some numbers stamped on the front fork. I believe it's a date of manufacture. 2009 11 and what looks like a CWI above it although the C could be an O. It's sort of like a C but open on both sides. Anyone know what this means? My guess is November 2009 since the rest of my frame is from Waterford in 2010. The answer for me was no, but I could trim down the number of bikes I own. I want to minimize and plus I don't have room as I live in a condo and bike parking has become an issue. There hasn't been a lot of talk about using Riv's as commuters on this board and even Rivendell doesn't seem to push the commuting aspect for their bikes. The Sam to me, might make a good commuter. My commutes are 60 minutes each way, so nothing drastic. It is set up with Albatross's and a Brooks B67, plus the required basket and Mark's rack. The bike currently has Hetre's but I think I will use a pair of Marathons that I also own. I will pick up SKS Longboards today and if the experiment works, a new dynamo front wheel will be built. [RBW] Re: Sam creaking today with new set up. Any advice?
This happened to me too. When I first set up my Sam I used a Nitto Technomic that I cannibalized from another bike. The old bike was a much smaller frame and I had a lot of rise above the head tube but with the Sam I only need about an inch. After about 100 miles or so that creaking would appear. Sometimes I would pull the stem and re-grease it but that was always only a temporary solution. Eventually I switched to a Nitto Dynamic12 stem which is a lot less stem down in the head tube. Several thousand miles later and no creaks so I think it's just that long stem down in there. No promises but I don't think there's any safety issues here. I have NO CLUE what actually causes the sound though. - Brian in Seattle. Bars still squeak but not as bad. ** *Info history:* I put my new, from RBW, 41 Noodles on it and set it up as close as I could to my dependable Giant bike set up. Bars 1.3cm below saddle height. Feels great. Nitto Deluxe stem 190 rise. Only about 3mm's left before stem extension bottoms out by hitting the headset lock nut. So I think stem wedge should be above the butt of the head tube if there is one. I have used this setup at higher bar levels and no creaking. Just today after setting it 1.3cm below saddle. At 1cm below saddle, no creaks either. BTW, I *lightly* greased the stem below min insertion point and wedge when installing. *Ideas?:* Maybe needs grease on bar cuff at stem clamp? More grease on stem and wedge? Maybe the stem being all the way down in steer tube is creaking because so much of it is contacting the inside of steer tube now and the whole rise shaft need grease? New 41 Noodle from RBW, so I don't think the bar would have a crack in it that creaks. The bars are flexy (both sides) and I can see them flex when I push hard on the drops. I did this with bike stopped to try to make it creak to see where the noise is coming from. *Any other ideas come to mind?* -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. But then I've never liked heavy tobacco. Cancer risk is greatly diminished if smoking at proper temperatures (not too hot a pipe) and smoking pure tobacco without the hundreds of additives in cigarettes. But you are right, it is still a risk. [RBW] Post Courage Classic Pictures
I loaded up my Sam and rode it on the Courage Classic again. Pictures to prove it! - http://www.flickr.com/photos/neutralbuoyancy/sets/72157634961282335/ This year I even took my saddle bags and my digital SLR camera. This brought the weight up to 47 pounds with empty water bottles. And actually it wasn't that bad. I even passed some carbon peeps. The Courage Classic is a three day/170 mile ride right here in the Washington Cascades. Each day climbs over a mountain pass. The Sam was a huge hit. There was a small crowd formed around it many times taking pictures and asking questions. To the one person in the RBW Owners Brunch who made a donation thank you again. If anyone else wants to donate here's the link to my fundraising page. There's still time. http://www.courageclassic.kintera.org/Brian_Pickart With your donation you're helping to stop the cycle of child abuse and neglect . 100% of your donation goes directly to the charity. All of the patches and hats we had originally done up were long retired, lost, or given away...so I got in touch with some of the original ACW's and told them I was going to mint some lapel pins...everyone chipped in to beat the minimums. Our whole thing was very tongue in cheek, but we wanted it to have an old money-secret society-unleash the hounds type of feel to it. Anyway after finding the iBob's / ROB's and meeting so many awesome people and reading about the network that exists between the riders, I thought it would be cool to expand the ACW. It's all for fun and conversation, and really just a bit of decoration for the bags, hats etc...but wanted to offer them up. I have @ 20-30 or so left of the lapel pins, but we can do more if interest is there. We were also contemplating doing up some patches too? $6/pc shipped to you. Trades for your club pins is good too. For that matter no interesting trade would be turned down. Drop me line hbc...@yahoo.com javascript: or just paypal me there with your info! Worked out well today except I think the ipod battery got cold in the wind. After about 20 min my fully charged ipod was dead. Then after like two stoplights it was back up 1/2 way again. I say shellac. It will help keep the cloth bar tape clean in this Seattle environment. It WILL darken it. Even the clear shellac will. I started with VERY light bar tape on my last bar job and added about 4 coats of shellac until I felt it matched the bike. Here's a picture showing the bars and some of the tape without shellac - http://www.flickr.com/photos/neutralbuoyancy/8435063536/in/photostream/ - Brian P. It's a great way to learn stuff and fun to hang with other Rivendellians. Lots happening on my bike this weekend--going back to Gran Bois Rando bar and ErgoPower brifters from 46cm Noodle and Silver downtube shifters--I tried!, and trying out a new old SunTour front derailleur I got from Rob M., to see if it'll shift the TA Pro Vis triple better than the DA 7800 series that came with the bike. Now the question is, to shellac or not to shellac? Amber shellac muddied things up considerably, in my off-bike test. Thanks again Brian! I've been doing it for two years now. I had a fixed gear as a second bike. I guess I got caught up in the fad and it quickly wore off. Now I'm just rolling on my Sam. Commuting, leisure rides and about 1-3 long group rides a year. Everyone loves it on the group rides and I'm sure a lot of them are shocked that I'm riding such a heavy thing. With the racks, generator hub, overly built up wheels and fenders. I'm in the process of rebuilding the wheels and this will be the first time I've actually added something that LOWERED the weight. Of course I'm not concerned with being first. :) I've worn out or switched out many parts and I've saved a little stockpile so if something breaks I can manage for a few days. Worst comes to worst, there's the bus. I don't do much, if any trail riding but I'm sure if a back road trip came up I could adapt the bike for it. [RBW] Re: Courage Classic
Well, I'll take that as a no. If anyone is maybe I'll see you there. I'll be on a orange Sam Hillborne with orange handlebars named Tanager. Courage Classic is a fund raiser. All the money goes to the charity and every little bit counts. That said, here's a bit more about it and a link should anyone wish to sponsor me - I am participating in this year’s 21st annual Courage Classic Bicycle Tour, August 4-6, 2012. The Courage Classic is a 3-day, 173-mile ride that traverses the Cascade Mountains, including Snoqualmie, Blewett, and Stevens Passes. The ride is well known for its beautiful scenery, the camaraderie among the riders, the food, and the incredible support from the Rotary Clubs of Pierce County and United Parcel Service. But the Courage Classic is so much more than that. It is the largest single funding source for the Child Abuse Intervention Department (CAID) at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in Tacoma, WA. Each year the CAID provides treatment to more than 500 child victims of abuse. This crisis is not limited to our community. In fact, the national average is that one in three girls and one in five boys will become the victim of abuse by the age of 18. The Courage Classic is really a good news, bad news story: The bad news is that child abuse is pervasive in our society; but the good news is we are doing something about it. Last year alone, the Courage Classic raised more than $739,000 for the CAID at Mary Bridge. And since its inception in 1992, the event has generated more than $5 million. That’s where you come in: In order to participate in the Courage Classic, all riders must raise a minimum of $750 in pledges. I have created this online fundraising site to make it as easy as possible for you to contribute to my efforts. http://courageclassic.kintera.org/brian_pickartPlease consider making a 100% tax-deductible pledge to this very worthy cause. Thank you in advance for your generous support! -Brian Pickart Courage Classic Rider http://courageclassic.kintera.org/brian_pickart On Sunday, July 22, 2012 1:11:42 AM UTC-7, Benedikt wrote: Anyone riding in the Courage Classic? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: GAH! It was the ______?!?
Were all the other parts of your drive train new when you did the build? As I understand your post the chain was new. What about the cranks, cassette? I'm sure the answer was probably yes but was the chain cut to the right length? On Dec 22, 5:13 pm, Doug Way jd-...@comcast.net wrote: Hi Rex- Debbie and I have had a similar problem twice before. Both times we were running an SRAM chain on a Shimano drivetrain (Debbie's old Atlantis and my Bike Friday). Can't tell you why, but I fixed the problem by putting a Shimano chain in place of the SRAM. In both cases, it was like yours, drivetrain was noisy, we had lots of missed shifts, etc. Deb's Atlantis had a Sugino crank, Shimano bar ends, and a Deore XT derailleur. My BF has a Shimano 105 triple crank, bar end shifters, and 105 triple rear derailleur. Since that time, I've read a few reports (VeloNews) from bike mechanics about having funny shifting problems and fixing them by making sure they use a Shimano chain with Shimano drive trains. Glad you fixed your problems. No, you haven't lost your mind. I tried everything I could think of... even took it to Riv HQ to ask for help... everything that'd make it better would only make it slightly better, and half of that was probably placebo. I'd tried everything that came to mind, except for one simple thing [I'd already tried the complex stuff first]... I didn't try this one simple thing because I didn't have a compatible one in my parts inventory [yes, I have a parts inventory in my home shop] to try, and didn't want to take one off another bike... So, I suffered and suffered and lost the best ~1000 miles of my bike to this pain [no idea exactly how many miles, no speedo]... I really should have just bought another part, since it's a wear part and all, but whatever... So, last night while out cleaning the drivetrain (since it'd gotten particularly bad on my last ride home, so bad that I almost wanted to get off and walk home). I finally just did it... I was hesitant, because I didn't want to put a worn one and wear out my other newer parts, but I measured the other bike's **CHAIN** for wear, and it was within tolerance, so I swapped them... IT'S SILENT NOW!!! I didn't miss a single shift on the way to work this morning, and it was nearly silent!!! So question... how does a brand new PC971 chain perform so poorly? I've never had such problems with SRAM chains before, and always preferred them over Shimano chains. The one that I swapped was a KMC Z-9000 that I'd purchased a number of years ago from a shop that was selling new OE pulls for $4 (I wish now that I'd taken their entire inventory!! What a deal!)... what could be wrong that would make it perform so poorly? It's been a long time, so I probably can't get my money back from the LBS where I bought it, but it'd be nice to know what to look for in the future! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Maybe pull-up in cargo van and smash the lock/core and drive off. I really don't know. I do know that true security is a myth and anything can get stolen. In the future I plan to start using two good locks. Sort of a pain to carry around, but it will take twice as long to rip off. An extra couple seconds or minutes could be as good a deterrent as anything. General locking instructions and theories have been covered well, and they all lead to the same conclusion - if you leave it locked, you may lose it. The longer it's left, the more likely the lift. The more you leave it in the same place each time, the more times a potential theif has to evaluate the coinditions. The best you can hope for is diverting a low-tech thief to another, less well defended bicycle. However, something in your description caught my eye, and it was a topic I was related to another person over the weekend - if you have a Kryptonite lock from 8-10 years ago with an open-end lock that uses a cylinder type key, they are prone to attacks with - believe it or not - a Bic pen cylinder (or similar - this is not a case of French constructeur superiority...). Basically, you can work the open end of the pen barrel into the lock and smoosh it around for a while until it pushes out the tumblers and then twist it around to open the lock. There was a well-travelled video of this, a subsequent recall from Kryptonite (pretty sure now discontinued) and much internet chatter. But, as I was helping a friend work on his son's bike, there it was - that prototypical krypto with that exact lock type. And he asked me if it was a good lock... [RBW] Re: What's your winter project? 2011 version
I just converted an old set of tires to some DIY studded snow tires. We only get snow a few weeks out of the year here and I just couldn't bring myself to purchase some. These old tires were perfect for that and it might snow this weekend. On Nov 17, 1:36 pm, William tapebu...@gmail.com wrote: I just read through the 2010 winter projects thread. Pretty entertaining. This winter, I've got a few projects that I'm planning. I'm doing another 650B build. Between my Hilsen and Bombadil, I hardly need another 650B bike, but I wanted to try the low trail skinny tube thing, and I had an extra wheelset. So that's ongoing. Every bike is going to get another coat of shellac on the handlebars. The ones that have been used the most (Hilsen) or have been on the roof the most (Bomba) need it. The Hilsen will get some drivetrain work to prepare it for another brevet season. I'll also do some optimization of fender lines on all the bikes, possibly making my own spacers if needed. Finally I'll go through some of the older parts and sell some things off. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Installed Front Rack... PAIN IN THE REAR!
When I got my racks and the al fenders for my bike I spent a good week messing with it before I got it to run quiet. Then after a few months there suddenly came a rattle. It was one of the screws coming loose. All the screws got a dose of Loctite after that. No problems for several hundred miles since. Those babies are solid. It was all worth it. Of course I have canti's on my SH so no problems there. VO Constructeur on the back and Nitto Campy up front. Don't forget the thread locker! http://www.flickr.com/photos/neutralbuoyancy/5551209249/in/set-72157607896493013 On Oct 13, 11:49 pm, Rex Kerr rexk...@gmail.com wrote: So, last time I was at RBW I bought a Mark's rack for my AHH. After getting it home I decided that it didn't go well with my VO Constructeur rack on the rear, and didn't solve my problem with the Al fenders moving from side to side and rubbing on the tire during climbs, so I ordered a VO Constructeur front rack and decided to put the Mark's rack on my touring bike. Tonight I started with the VO rack... what a pain in the rear! The welded on tang that connects to the fender daruma didn't allow my sidepull brakes to open enough to clear the 33.3 JB tires... so I had to refashion it... bending it (without breaking the weld!) was a slow and painful process... I finally found a shape that worked, but man, that took longer than I'd expected to do the whole rack. Cutting everything and drilling the al fenders was a bit hairy, as I'm always afraid of misdrilling the fender and having an unsightly hole! I managed to drill the hole, but the screw didn't go all of the way in... I put a washer in between the fender and the rack to take up the extra space, but it rubbed on the tire... ugh... dremel out to grind the screw shorter, and I'm on my way again I FINALLY managed to get it on! It looks sharp, and the fender is much more solid now, but what a PITA! After that was done I installed my new grid gray mudflaps, and relocated my light from the mid-fork braze-on to the rack, and it looks really sharp... Pictures will follow... probably tomorrow... As for the Mark's rack... I had it on my Trek 520 in about 5 minutes, no cutting... and that includes disconnecting and reconnecting some of the screws for the lowrider rack that was already there... they're slick racks, if only I wasn't so vain with the AHH. :-) Now I need to buy one of those wald baskets to zip tie to the Mark's rack for throwing jackets and stuff into this winter! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
