[RBW] Re: billie bars

2024-06-04 Thread Ed Fausto
Hi Raf,
I have an Albatross on my Toyo Atlantis.
But on the MIT Atlantis with long top tube, I preferred the Billie bar
specially the longer grip area which allows me to have more area to grip on
the bend part.
But I use thumb shifters on the Billie :-)

[RBW] Re: Silver crank surprise and the weight of things

2024-01-12 Thread Ed Fausto
Hi Richard (I hope I got your name right),

Please provide more details. Like you I have a 51 Gus and it weighs 40lbs
and I am having second thoughts of bringing it to my next big trip.
I am thinking of bringing my 48 Hunqapillar but I prefer the ride quality
of my Gus.
I also consider myself not a weight weenie when buying parts and
accessories.
But after getting my Gus, it felt heavy compared to my 48 Hunqapillar
(26"), 50 Atlantis (26") and 51 Appaloosa (650b).

Thanks Richard!

Re: [RBW] Re: Atlantis Old vs New?

2023-03-04 Thread Ed Fausto
Hi,
I share the thoughts of Tom.
I also have both a 51 Toyo Atlantis and a 50 MIT Atlantis.
Although, I have used by Toyo Atlantis during my 2016 TransAm and it
performed well with a fully loaded gears.
My only cons on my Toyo is the toe clip overlap which is annoying for me
specially when grinding up slowly uphills.
I am by default a slow rider so toe clip often happens more frequently than
other riders.

When I got my MIT, I feel the difference is it is more stable than my Toyo.
And of course, no more toe clip overlap :-)
I have not yet ridden my MIT on long tours.

As mentioned by others, since my MIT Atlantis is very much longer than my
Toyo, it could be a challenge finding boxes after a long tour.
Regards,
Ed Fausto
Manila, Philippines

PS Even with the toe clip overlap on my Toyo Atlantis, I will still keep it
due to sentimental reasons after my 2016 TransAm

[RBW] Re: Front pannier rack for Appaloosa

2021-11-04 Thread Ed Fausto
Hi Nick,

I tried your suggestion on the Tubus Tara installation by swapping the left
and right rack rails and has allowed me to set the rail almost perfectly
horizontal.
What front panniers are you using?
When I tried both my Carradice C and Gravel pack front panniers, I am
having trouble mounting the lower hooks since it is exactly located on the
fork mounting points of the rack.

I really wanted to use the Tara.
By the way, it is also the stainless version and the hoop is 14mm in
diameter.

Edgar Fausto

[RBW] Re: Front pannier rack for Appaloosa

2021-03-02 Thread Ed Fausto
Hi Nick,

Thank you for posting a picture of your Appaloosa with Tubus Tara.
I really wanted to use a Tubus Tara on my 51 Appaloosa but the absence of
lower eyelet prevented me from getting one.
Would you mind telling me what is the size of your Appaloosa frame?
I am not sure if frame size affects the dimension of the fork.

Thanks,

[RBW] Re: Gus Boots Willsen Build

2021-02-01 Thread Ed Fausto
Hi Laing,
That is definitely a very premium build.
How do you find the Crust Ti LD stem? is this the raw finish?

I am looking for ways to have my handlebar higher than my seat on my 51 Gus.
Right now my steering tube is still uncut and using a 70m Nitto UI-21 stem
with Nitto Choco norm handlebar.
The uncut steerer tube with lots of headset spaces does not look nice which
is why I am considering a similar stem as an alternative.

Dear iamkeith,

Thanks for providing those pictures :-)
Looks like your Susie fork has better tire clearance than my 51 GUS. :-(
I will try to get some measurement when I get home tonight but based on my
visual estimate, the fork of my 51 GUS has only around 5-8mm clearance from
the top of the tire.
Looks like the Susie forks has more clearance than Gus forks unless my 27.5
x 2.6 tires are unusually taller compared to other 27.5 plus tires.

Hi iamkeith!
Please do take some photos and keep us updated on your fender experiments.
Yes, you are correct. The fork crown has the tightest clearance. When I
had my Gus built by Rivendell I did not anticipated the potential fender
issue and had V brakes installed with its straddle wire close to the tires.

With the Dia Compe 980, do you have to deflate your tires a lot to remove
the wheel set?

[RBW] Fender for Gus Boots Willsen

2021-01-26 Thread Ed Fausto
After a long wait, I finally received my GBW with 27.5 x 2.6" Bontrager XR2
tires.
Ever since I became a fan of Rivendell, I have been a fender convert mostly
using SKS fenders.

Looking at the tire clearances of my GBW, it seems I do not have enough
space to install fenders.

Anyone who has installed fenders with these hilly bikes?

Re: [RBW] Re: In praise of Schwalbe Marathon Supreme 26X 2.00

2020-11-20 Thread Ed Fausto
Thanks Jim for the feedback on the Supreme.
I also used the old 1.6 Marathon supreme from my last TransAm tour in 2016 and
I only had 2 flats. They grip well on wet aspalt so gave me confidence on
downhill.

Because of your feedback, I now would like to try the 650b size which is only
available in 1.6” last time I checked.

Thanks again.

Re: [RBW] 650b Atlantis Sizing for an 85PBH

2020-10-12 Thread Ed Fausto
Hi Alex,
I am not sure if you have checked the pbh chart at Riv's website.
Based on the pbh chart, it looks like a 53 MIT Atlantis would best fit a 85
cm pbh.
It is perfectly in the middle of the range from 83 to 87 cm pbh.

https://www.rivbike.com/pages/pubic-bone-height-how-to-measure-your-pbh

Check Riv's chart.

Did they stamp them somewhere else? This Atlantis is an early one; from

the news that Rivendell is working with Velocity for a new rim for their
Hillibikes.

I sent Velocity an email to check if they are still doing this project with
Rivendell and this is the reply I got.

Hello!

Thanks for taking the time to contact us via our webform. We are working on
a rim with Rivendell for their new hilly bike, but the details and timeline
are yet to be figured out. Unfortunately I don’t have more details for you.

Thanks for riding with Velocity USA! Please let me know if I can help in
any other way.

Thanks for the "Tacx T4415 Cartridge Tool" tip.
Will definitely get one for my tool kit.
It's definitely a bugger to remove specially if the threads of the bottom

Re: [RBW] Seeking summer weight long sleeve wool shirt ideas

2019-07-14 Thread Ed Fausto
Hi Deacon,
Here in the Philippines where the weather is normally hot and humid, I have
found "MEN EXTRA FINE MERINO V-NECK LONG-SLEEVE SWEATER" from Uniqlo
perfect for our weather. I just visit a tailor and have the long sleeves
cut for Php 100 (2 USD) to convert it to a regular T-shirt.
It has become my daily shirt at home or even going out specially when I
commute to work.
I just change clothes upon arriving at the office and wear it again when I
go home (which is dry already) without the stink.

Re: [RBW] Re: I got a MIT Atlantis

2019-04-02 Thread Ed Fausto
Thanks Joe for the feedback on the fender light.
I assume that its a B
I recently removed my rear rack on my Hunqapillar and replaced it with
my Carradice Original Bagman Support - Expedition.
This resulted to loosing my Dyno B Rack-mount (
https://www.rivbike.com/collections/lights/products/dyno-rack-light).
At the same time the Carradice Bagman will not allow me to move my rear
light to my saddle so
the only solution is to purchase a fender mounted Dyno rear light.

Thanks again.

I think I only had 2 punctures, once in the front and once in the rear.
The rear tire had most wear but it did not require replacement for the

Re: [RBW] Styrofoam in a Ram bottom bracket shell?

I think Joe is right.
When the ship the bike, they put a styrofoam on top of the seat tube that
looks like a letter T to protect the lug.
Maybe the lower portion that is placed inside the seat tube broke off and
went down the bottom bracket.

[RBW] Anyone bought a 47 or 50 MIT Atlantis?

2018-06-21 Thread Ed Fausto
Hi,
Anyone who bought a 47 or 50 MIT Atlantis?
I would like to hear your fit experience with the new geometry.

With my height at 5' 5" and pbh of 79-80 so I am between size 47 and 50 of
the new MIT Atlantis

I currently ride the following;
a. 48 Hunqapillar (Ahearn Map handlebar with 12cm stem) - fits me perfectly
b. 51 Atlantis (Albatross bars with 13cm stem) - feels cramped and I often
experience TCO
c. 50 Cheviot (Albatross bars with 13cm stem) - fits me perfectly

Riv suggest that I get size 47 MIT Atlantis but I am worried that I will
still feel cramped since the top tube is only 0.5cm longer than my current
51 Atlantis.
With the 50 MIT Atlantis, the top tube will be 2cm longer than my current
51 Atlantis (old) not to mention that the front center will be the same
with my 48 Hunqapillar where I am not having TCO experience.

Thank you guys for any advise.

PS I currently use 165mm cranks on all my Riv bikes but plan to use 152
Sugino cranks with the MIT Atlantis. This should help increase my seat
height.
