RE: Wubi
There is also some logic in Ubiquity that will copy Wubi.exe to the Windows startup folder, when it finds 4 primary partitions already in use on an MBR formatted disk. It asks Install Ubuntu inside Windows? as the first option. e.g. http://askubuntu.com/q/536075/14916 When this happens, Wubi will run automatically the next time Windows starts - in standalone mode - which means it will download the whole ISO and try to install. So it is *inaccurate* to say that Wubi is serving only as a greeter in Windows. It is broken and needs to be fixed or removed. Here is the Ubiquity code in case you're interested: https://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-installer/ubiquity/trunk/view/head:/ubiquity/plugins/ubi-partman.py#L2333 If you'll notice, the logic depends on whether Wubi.exe has been shipped on the ISO or not. Remove Wubi and the logic is disabled. Also I find it a bit rich for you to say ...if one wants to brick their windows. Remember that Wubi.exe is signed and certified by Canonical. They probably won't find it amusing that the team in charge of Wubi are making comments like that. One would hope. On that subject (on being in charge of Wubi), you do realise that there are in fact patches supplied to fix Wubi? So if you wanted to you could just promote them. For example: https://code.launchpad.net/~hakuna-matata/wubi/upstart (merge requested in May) https://code.launchpad.net/~hakuna-matata/wubi/UEFI https://code.launchpad.net/~hakuna-matata/wubi/lp1385930 https://code.launchpad.net/~hakuna-matata/wubi/lp1317437 If you need help with these I'm pretty sure hakuna-matata would be happy to assist. Re: [Bug 1385930] [NEW] 14.10 dual boot win 7 64-bit cannot with wubi installing
This historically happened with the ubuntu installer (ubiquity) if parted returns errors (both normal and wubi installs). Seen it before when there is leftover GPT data on a MBR formatted disk. Try booting from the USB and going to a terminal (or hit Ctrl+Alt+F1 during the installation) and run: sudo parted -l and sudo fdisk -l See what errors you get (PS those are lower case L's). If it complains about GPT data on a MBR formatted disk or returns other errors, then you'll need to clean them up before the installer will let you continue. There's a possibility this is something new but I'd rule the above out first. I haven't yet been able to duplicate the kernel oops. Reproducible: If I shut the lid immediately after shutting down, it proceeds to shut down, but if I wait until the screen backlight is switched off and then shut the lid, it Suspends - and then after opening the lid resumes Shut down. [Bug 1196392] [NEW] [Dell Inc. Inspiron N4010] suspend/resume failure
Public bug reported: I shut down my computer... waited long enough I figured - and closed the lid. Came back hours later to find it had suspended instead of shutting down. I think this is probably the bug, not the resume failure. In any case, after opening the lid, it sort of resumed and then continued to shut down as originally intended. IMO,once the shutdown signal is received it should override a suspend signal from the lid closing. Otherwise you have to sit and stare at the computer to make sure it does what it's asked - and that's... not good. [Bug 1105604] Re: Brightness control stopped working
An update on this bug... I have two raring installs. For one of them the brightness controls work, one doesn't. The one that doesn't work is a vanilla upgrade to Raring 13.04 from Quantal 12.10. The one that works is also an upgrade from 12.10, but there are two major differences: 1. I installed Gnome Shell 2. I am running the Mir PPA I have no idea which of the above might account for the brightness controls working, but installing Gnome shell should be harmless and it's not a bad desktop - so I'd recommend to try that. I don't recommend using the Mir PPA. Re: Intention to drop Wubi from 13.04 release
Dmitrijs, I've provided a patch for Wubi does not check if Windows boots using UEFI https://bugs.launchpad.net/wubi/+bug/694242 so that Wubi checks for an EFI boot and exits with an error message Wubi does not currently support EFI. It does this prior to downloading any ISOs and there's no subsequent uninstall required. Getting Wubi to actually work on an EFI system won't be as easy. I'll investigate it further, though. Re: Intention to drop Wubi from 13.04 release
I think the point in the original post was that Wubi 13.04 was broken and doesn't work with Windows 8 UEFI, not that there's a risk of data loss. There's also no evidence that I have seen to indicate that Wubi causes data loss in Windows 8. The Windows boot manager won't give you any choice if you have hibernated Windows, and therefore it's not possible to boot Wubi with normal hibernation. And if fast-start is enabled the Windows 8 boot manager also removes this hibernated system session prior to booting Wubi. This is more of a problem on a normal dual boot, and even then, unless you force-mount the NTFS partition you shouldn't see any data loss. You can refer to this bug report for more info: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ntfs-3g/+bug/1043149 The only issue shown there is if you enable hybrid-sleep (not switched on by default), and even then there's no data loss - just the partition can't be mounted so Wubi doesn't boot. So, if we go back to the original point, given that Wubi 13.04 is easily fixable, are your guesstimates of usage high or low? Are they based on the downloads of Wubi.exe? Any numbers on that? Re: Intention to drop Wubi from 13.04 release
This is an often repeated argument against Wubi, but there are some problems with it. 1. Wubi isn't supposed to compete head-to-head with a normal install. I've seen cases of people that aren't even aware they are using Wubi or what the differences are, and this is definitely an issue. So I raised this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/wubi/+bug/1078959 2. If point #1 is not understood then, yes, I can understand why people would get upset about Wubi. But imagine if every time someone burned a live CD and it failed and then we decided it was a problem and we should get rid of live CDs because it was making Ubuntu look bad. No, I don't believe that argument holds. 3. Wubi does in fact work well. I could forgive a newcomer to Ubuntu thinking why do a normal install when Wubi works so well. I can hear you laughing, but this is actually stated often[*]. Yes there are bugs. Yes people have problems. But these need to be looked at without emotion and used to make a rational decision. Saying I have a friend who... or I couldn't even get it working so... or Windows is unstable therefore... just doesn't add anything of value. So to answer your main point... the journalist did make a mistake recommending Wubi. I haven't seen anyone in mainstream put forward Wubi as a viable long-term alternative or a production system. There should indeed be warnings. But we should IMO go further to understand what real positives and real negatives they are, and arrive at a reasoned decision. And I'm fine with that decision either way. Regards, bcbc [*] References 1. I can't find the original article right now, but I recently read a gaming blog where some random journalist had attempted to install Steam inside of a Wubi Ubuntu installation. His readers mercilessly flamed him as being essentially a total idiot (because everybody just knows that Wubi is *incredibly* terrible), and so he was forced to try it again without Wubi. Had he not been a journalist, he would have simply given up on Wubi and written Ubuntu off as an unstable product. The unfortunate reality is that if Wubi is your first experience with Ubuntu, you're likely to come to the conclusion that Ubuntu is an unstable mess, when really it's the fact that Windows is an unstable base underneath your Ubuntu that is causing the problems (but you don't know that). Wubi is basically a disaster and is generating a lot of negative associations with Ubuntu in novice's minds. Here's an alternate page where Don't use Wubi is given as the number one piece of advice for getting Steam to run on Ubuntu: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3079968 In short, Wubi needs to die a quick and painless death so we can get on with providing positive experiences to new users of Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-devel mailing list ubuntu-devel@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel
[Bug 986269] Re: Unable to open a folder for 10 GB Filesystem, No application is registered as handling this file... or Nautilus pops browser when partition is mounted in bash script
Retested this. The problem doesn't occur on 12.10 or 13.04. It still happens on 12.04.2, which is using with nautilus 3.4.2. Actually 12.10 is also using nautilus 3.4.2. So maybe this isn't a nautilus bug after all. In 12.04.2 the window pops up but nothing changes in the Unity bar. In 12.10, there is a drive icon for the partition being mounted which disappears when I mount it on /mnt. and reappears when I unmount it. So... now I'm thinking this is actually a Unity bug in 12.04.2. ** Package changed: nautilus (Ubuntu) = unity (Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/986269 Title: Unable to open a folder for 10 GB Filesystem, No application is registered as handling this file... or Nautilus pops browser when partition is mounted in bash script To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/986269/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: Intention to drop Wubi from 13.04 release
It's hard to make an informed decision without knowing the usage stats of Wubi. If it's quite low then I expect there'd be little impact, but if it's popular then it's taking a low-risk installation method away from users who might otherwise not have tried Ubuntu. Does Canonical have any statistics on this? Re. the bugs. I had a look at Wubi fails to detect 12.04.2 and 13.04 AMD64 ISO https://bugs.launchpad.net/wubi/+bug/1134770 and found that the fix is a one-liner configuration file change (in data/isolist.ini). The fix for 13.04 installer doesn't create user account https://bugs.launchpad.net/wubi/+bug/1155704 could be to simply remove the disk-image installs from 13.04. This again is a two line removal from the same configuration file. I've patched and tested both 12.04.2 and 13.04 with these changes to confirm they work. Re. Windows 8: that may not be solvable right now, but I expect there are still many more BIOS-based computers out there than UEFI. And the regular dual boot for UEFI has many problems as well. Wubi could probably be smarter about checking whether Windows is booting through UEFI and exit gracefully prior to downloading the ISO/diskimage. I am therefore proposing to drop Wubi from the 13.04 release, starting immediately with the upcoming Beta. This will save our testers from spending their time testing an image that will not have developers working on fixing the bugs they find, and spares our users from using an image for 13.04 that is not up to Ubuntu's standards of quality. If someone is interested in taking over the maintenance of Wubi so that it can be released with 13.04 (or if not with 13.04, then with a future release), I would encourage them to start by looking at the abovementioned bugs and preparing patches, then talking to the release team. [Bug 1079482] Re: Windows 7 Not Booting after Grub installed to bootsector
Phillip Susi, There seem to many a number of issues here, but the fact is that Grub installed itself over the windows boot sector, not the MBR. Wiping out the partition boot sector prevents Windows from booting, whereas replacing the bootloader in the MBR is normal (obviously). The bug I reported was supposed to *PREVENT* grub from ever installing to the Windows partition (this used to be offered in the drop down box as the target for Grub2 while installing - in Ubiquity) but should not be offered now. But if it's not offered, then the question is how does Grub get installed to the Windows partition? The only way I know is to manually do it with grub-install /dev/sda1 --force but clearly new users are not doing this. Therefore my point about the possible regression. Running FIXMBR won't do a thing in this case. Until the bootsector is repaired Windows cannot boot. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1079482 Title: Windows 7 Not Booting after Grub installed to bootsector To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/1079482/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1067580] [NEW] Closed windows appear as phantom desktop overlay
Public bug reported: I'm running Quantal development release up to date. I brought my computer out of sleep to find that the Chrome browser appeared in all four desktop workspaces. I closed the actual open chrome application, but the image of the browser still shows in all four workspaces. I don't know if it affects anything other than chrome and I'm not sure whether it's compiz/unity/whatever so I'm logging this on unity. My first report was marked invalid as I didn't include system info (bug 1067227). I'm including a new snapshot of what my desktop workspace looks like. [Bug 1067227] [NEW] Closed windows appear as phantom desktop overlay
Public bug reported: I'm running Quantal development release up to date. Sometimes application windows that I close appear to be still open, but it's an 'image overlay' on the desktop (on all desktop spaces). I'm including a snapshot as this doesn't make a lot of sense. Basically, it looks like the application window is still there, but it's not. In the attached picture, I am showing all desktop spaces and it appears that a chrome browse window with a google search is present in all of them... but there is no open browser window anywhere and clicking on any of them does nothing. Also, I can open new browser windows that work fine, so it's not a chrome problem. I have seen the same behaviour with other applications than chrome so I believe it's not app specific. ** Affects: unity (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: quantal ** Attachment added: phantomwindows.png https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1067227/+attachment/3399846/+files/phantomwindows.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1067227 Title: Closed windows appear as phantom desktop overlay To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1067227/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1043149] Re: [regression since 12.04] ntfs-3g refuses to mount Windows8 not using hibernation
I still fail to see why this is a bug in wubi or ntfs-3g. The way I see it is that Windows8 chooses to hibernate by default on shutdown (unless fast-start is disabled), without the knowledge of the user. The fact that the user is unaware of it, doesn't change the fact that it's hibernated. So it's correct for ntfs-3g to refuse to mount it. Also, the fact that Microsoft consider Restart a true restart and Shut down a hidden, system hibernation is not intuitive or logical (to me). The problem with Wubi and hybrid sleep, is in my mind a windows 8 bug. Since in this case, it's Shutdown (not restart) that cleans up the mess left behind by the hybrid sleep. Now suddenly Restart is the inferior option that leaves a quasi-hibernated state. Why would it be up to ntfs-3g to try to interpret this mess and what should it do with a system-hibernated state versus a user-hibernated state? For Wubi, it's probably easy enough to check and switch off 'hybrid sleep' to get around the issue, but I think it's unlikely that Microsoft intended this and maybe they'll fix it. References: 1. this shows that Windows 8 shut down is intentionally hibernating http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2011/09/08/delivering-fast-boot-times-in-windows-8.aspx Now here’s the key difference for Windows 8: as in Windows 7, we close the user sessions, but instead of closing the kernel session, we hibernate it. Compared to a full hibernate, which includes a lot of memory pages in use by apps, session 0 hibernation data is much smaller, which takes substantially less time to write to disk. If you’re not familiar with hibernation, we’re effectively saving the system state and memory contents to a file on disk (hiberfil.sys) and then reading that back in on resume and restoring contents back to memory. Using this technique with boot gives us a significant advantage for boot times, since reading the hiberfile in and reinitializing drivers is much faster on most systems (30-70% faster on most systems we’ve tested). 2. That same link talks about Restart being the full reset (which is not the case after hybrid sleep): Also, choosing Restart from the UI will do a full shutdown, followed by a cold boot. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1043149 Title: [regression since 12.04] ntfs-3g refuses to mount Windows8 not using hibernation To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-release-notes/+bug/1043149/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1043149] Re: [regression since 12.04] ntfs-3g refuses to mount Windows8 not using hibernation
Okay, I hadn't noticed (or heard about) the bit about 'hybrid sleep'. I switched it on, used the sleep, and then woke up from the sweep. Then I hit Restart and tried to boot into Wubi, but it didn't work. I can't mount the windows partition except in read-only mode. bcbc@neptune:~$ head -c 30 '/mnt/$LogFile' | tail -c 4 | od -t x1 000 01 00 01 00 004 After that I performed a Shutdown from Windows, Wubi boots fine, including on subsequent Restarts from Windows. bcbc@neptune:~$ head -c 30 '/host/$LogFile' | tail -c 4 | od -t x1 000 01 00 01 00 004 After going in to Win8 and doing another Sleep, followed by another Restart, then Wubi won't boot again. So it seems easily reproducible. PS in case it matters, this is what hiberfil.sys looks like: bcbc@neptune:~$ head -c 8 /mnt/hiberfil.sys | od -t x1 000 48 49 42 52 09 00 00 00 010 I'll guess I'll be turning off 'hybrid sleep' now.
For a Windows 8 shutdown and booting (non-wubi) Ubuntu, I get: bcbc@neptune:~$ head -c 30 '/mnt/$LogFile' | tail -c 4 | od -t x1 000 00 00 02 00 004 But it won't mount it, except read-only so, in that sense, it's safe. But it would be a pain for a user trying to boot from an Ubuntu USB and trying to partition and install, or someone using Grub. bcbc@neptune:~$ sudo umount /mnt bcbc@neptune:~$ sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt Windows is hibernated, refused to mount. Failed to mount '/dev/sda1': Operation not permitted The NTFS partition is hibernated. Please resume and shutdown Windows properly, or mount the volume read-only with the 'ro' mount option, or mount the volume read-write with the 'remove_hiberfile' mount option. [Bug 1043149] Re: [regression since 12.04] ntfs-3g refuses to mount Windows8 not using hibernation
My previous post was after Restarting the computer from Windows 8 and booting into Wubi. The next test was to Shut down from Windows 8 and boot Wubi. That also worked, but I've observed a different behaviour when booting Wubi from Windows 8 manager as compared to Win 7 and that is: 1. Computer starts, BIOS screen 2. Windows boot manager, select Ubuntu(Wubi) 3. Computer restarts, BIOS reappears, boots directly into Ubuntu(Wubi) So it appears that Windows is taking care of the 'fast-start' hibernated image from the Windows Boot Manager when required. (Of course when it's really hibernated it just boots straight into Windows) It's different when I shut down Windows 8 and then boot the non-Wubi install (12.04.1). Then when I try to mount the windows partition I get: bcbc@neptune:~$ sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt Windows is hibernated, refused to mount. Failed to mount '/dev/sda1': Operation not permitted bcbc@neptune:~$ sudo mount -r /dev/sda1 /mnt bcbc@neptune:~$ head -c 8 /mnt/hiberfil.sys | od -t x1 000 48 49 42 52 09 00 00 00 010 bcbc@neptune:~$ -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1043149 Title: [regression since 12.04] ntfs-3g refuses to mount Windows8 not using hibernation To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-release-notes/+bug/1043149/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

During unpacking and installing 1800 packages it uses 2GB+ == this is definitely not the amount of space it thinks it needs. ** Affects: update-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: precise -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/986272 Title: Update manager doesn't calculate free space correctly for distribution upgrade To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/986272/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 984599] Re: package linux-image-3.2.0-23-generic 3.2.0-23.36 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Joseph Salisbury, The bug is about an error I received during the upgrade from 10.04.4 to 12.04. As I said in the description, the error was likely false, since the upgrade worked (and the kernel booted fine). I was testing the Upgrade process at the time (it's a throwaway install). So I'm not sure what running those commands will do to resolve the bug (the point is more that there was an error during an upgrade). So, I'll leave it as 'incomplete' but please explain further if I missed something as to why I need to run those commands and only mark it 'confirmed' if they 'don't fix' something (that I don't think is really broken.) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/984599 Title: package linux-image-3.2.0-23-generic 3.2.0-23.36 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/984599/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 888281] Re: Boot from FAT32 error and return to grub menu
I've just tested the patch on a FAT32 wubi install and it worked as intended. In order to test it, I manually edited the /usr/share/grub/grub- mkconfig_lib file during the installation (patch wasn't installed), used 'diff' to confirm it matched the patch, and then copied it to /target/usr/share/grub/grub_mkconfig_lib (/target/usr is the mount point for /dev/loop4 which is for the usr.disk virtual disk). And root.disk was mounted as /dev/loop2 on /target. The grub.cfg that was generated during the install is attached, and it shows that usr.disk will be mounted on loop4 by grub and root.disk is mounted as loop2: insmod part_msdos insmod fat set root='(hd1,msdos5)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root 2dab-fe25 loopback loop4 /ubuntu/disks/usr.disk set root=(loop4) if loadfont /share/grub/unicode.pf2 ; then set gfxmode=auto load_video insmod gfxterm insmod part_msdos insmod fat set root='(hd1,msdos5)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root 2dab-fe25 loopback loop2 /ubuntu/disks/root.disk set root=(loop2) set locale_dir=($root)/boot/grub/locale set lang=en_US insmod gettext fi ... After rebooting and selecting the Wubi install, there was no error or return to the menu. Then running sudo update-grub resulted in grub.cfg changing the loop device for usr.disk to loop1 and root.disk to loop0 (as expected): insmod part_msdos insmod fat set root='(hd1,msdos5)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root 2dab-fe25 loopback loop1 /ubuntu/disks/usr.disk set root=(loop1) if loadfont /share/grub/unicode.pf2 ; then set gfxmode=auto load_video insmod gfxterm insmod part_msdos insmod fat set root='(hd1,msdos5)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root 2dab-fe25 loopback loop0 /ubuntu/disks/root.disk set root=(loop0) set locale_dir=($root)/boot/grub/locale set lang=en_US insmod gettext fi ** Attachment added: Grub generated during the installation (ubiquity) https://bugs.launchpad.net/wubi/+bug/888281/+attachment/2832360/+files/grub.cfg.at.install -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/888281 Title: Boot from FAT32 error and return to grub menu To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/wubi/+bug/888281/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

According to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2419286 : Problem: “The boot configuration data store could not be opened. The system cannot find the file specified.” Symptoms When you run Bcdedit /enum all you get the following error “The boot configuration data store could not be opened. The system cannot find the file specified.” Look for the following registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\BCD If we check under HKLM you will not find the key BCD Cause If some 3rd party storage Disk or Storage Management software is installed it may bring all the volume without drive letter offline Generally 100 MB partition is system partition which contains Boot configuration Database and does not have a drive letter assigned. Solution From adminstrator command prompt: C:\Diskpart C:\Diskpart List volume C:\Diskpart Select volume 1 (Considering this is 100 MB system partition) C:\Diskpart Online volume C:\Diskpart exit This has been confirmed to work here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1871823 Note the Microsoft solution also mentions the solution Jason Tucker provided in #27 - but I think it's probably better not to have to assign a drive letter to the system boot partition. [Bug 826378] Re: Oneiric Alpha3 - Wubi grub menu not hidden
I don't have a personal preference on whether the grub menu should be hidden or not (in a way it's good to familiarize windows users with what it will look like when they switch to a normal dual boot; on the other hand, it can irritate users having two boot menus and that drives them to mess about and break things). [Bug 610898] Re: grub-pc upgrade renders computer unbootable when Wubi is installed to partition other than Windows
Reran testcases 2 and 4 (Maverick and Lucid install on same partition as Windows). The test case involved adding -Proposed and just upgrading packages grub-pc, grub-common, and lupin-support. The results were the same as reported before. Conclusion === Grub updates with the latest lupin-support deliver identical results regardless of where wubi is installed. PS Grub menu (from wubildr) now shows 1.98-1ubuntu12 (as expected) NOTE: I don't plan to do any more tests at this point, unless the code changes. Although I expected the code to work more like Natty (updating wubildr no matter which partition it is installed to), on the positive side, it doesn't prompt to install grub to the MBR. And when it does update the grub.cfg to the state that caused the memory corruption on recreating the loopback device, it also updates the wubildr - to prevent the booting problem. Although the same bad wubildr will exist on the non windows partition installs, the bug shouldn't be triggered. However, installs with a bad wubildr where it is still booting (I've seen cases where the corruption only occurs following a subsequent kernel update) might still have problems. Also, it seems that the grub-install-devices is a factor in whether the wubildr is updated on non-windows partition installs, but not on windows partition installs. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/610898 Title: grub-pc upgrade renders computer unbootable when Wubi is installed to partition other than Windows -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 770256] Re: Reboots after Wubi install via ubiquity repeatedly ask to uninstall
@Kate Stewart, Erick asked me to comment on this. I can't speak for the particular issue he is having deleting the startup option, but I know enough to point out some flaws in this approach. 1. When Ubiquity detects that there are 4 primary partitions already used and there is also an existing Windows install detected, it then offers the option to Install Ubuntu inside Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition. ( http://ubuntuforums.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=189969d=1303732484) 2 When you select this it copies the wubi.exe from the CDROM to the Windows partition and instructs the user to reboot (more or less, the screen is a little confusing: http://ubuntuforums.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=189970d=1303732484 ) 3. The next time the user boots into Windows, it automatically runs wubi.exe. Problems == a. Wubi.exe has been copied into the Common Startup folder so it runs for all users each time you boot into Windows. b. If you choose, not to install Wubi, it will keep prompting you each subsequent time you boot into Windows c. If you choose to install Wubi, it will run again and prompt you to UNINSTALL/Reinstall the next time you boot Windows. This goes on until you physically find and delete the entry. For XP the actual entry is in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\wubi.exe You can either browse to that location to delete it, or run Microsoft's msconfig utility. But in Erick's case he had some permissions issues and it would not let him uninstall (that part I am unclear on the exact reasons). But even if the user can remove this entry easily there are some additional problems: 1. It doesn't inform the user that by inserting the Ubuntu CD in the drive, it will use that image. If the user does not put the CD in, wubi.exe will instead download a new image. (If the user put the CD in while running Windows, it would prompt to install Ubuntu anyway). So in summary: Wubi.exe will run each time the user boots into Window prompting to install Ubuntu each/time or prompting to Uninstall/reinstall Ubuntu (if already installed) until the user physically finds and deletes Wubi.exe. This may result in some confusion. The locations that wubi.exe may be copied to are: For Windows 7 'ProgramData/Microsoft/Windows/Start Menu/Programs/Startup', For Windows XP 'Documents and Settings/All Users/Start Menu/Programs/Startup', For Windows NT 'Winnt/Profiles/All Users/Start Menu/Programs/Startup', A better solution, would be to add wubi.exe to the Windows registry as a RunOnce entry. Then it would only run on the first boot into Windows after the attempted Ubuntu install. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/770256 Title: Reboots after Wubi install via ubiquity repeatedly ask to uninstall -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 770256] Re: Reboots after Wubi install via ubiquity asks to uninstall
This isn't so much a bug in Wubi - this is the normal action. If you run it the first time it prompts to install. When you run it after installing, it prompts to uninstall first. So the bug is that ubiquity is placing Wubi in the Windows startup programs list and there's no way to remove it afterwards. It should be adding it as a Runonce to the windows registry which is supposed to automatically be removed. ** Also affects: ubiquity Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: ubiquity (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: ubiquity Status: New = Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/770256 Title: Reboots after Wubi install via ubiquity asks to uninstall -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
