[Bug 117640] Re: VLC plugin crashes browser Firefox

2008-11-22 Thread Georges
I confirm this for mozilla-plugin-vlc on intrepid.
Firefox plays once a WAV as sound embed. The second time a WAV should be
played, it crashes.

Removing mozilla-plugin-vlc solves the issue. Then the totem plugin is used
which works fine.
=> it's a vlc issue.

[Bug 94130] Re: HTTPS over proxy fails

2008-12-16 Thread Georges
maybe I could provide some piece of "do not reinvent the wheel".
The same problem existed in perl LWP 8 years ago.
Implementation was simple but yielded another supplemental problem:
as soon as the proxy needs a user/password authentication there is some more
code needed.
So dear python folks, look into LWP and port that to urllib2

On the other hand I wonder why apport doesn't just use wget or curl, which both
work fine. Fear of code injection? Well there are cookbooks out there how to
pass parameters to scripts without fear of executing the parameters.
Where are the good old times of unix with the philosophy "one tool for one
task"?

[Bug 94130] Re: HTTPS over proxy fails

2008-12-16 Thread Georges
still not fixed, intrepid 8.10 with all patches.
I wonder if such an important feature is broken because of bad urllib, apport
should have been changed since a long time to an alternative. If you want
ubuntu to be taken serious in the enterprise environment, this is a must!

Well now I have a crash in a dpkg dependency conflict which I would like
to report. How do i do this manually?

[Bug 141265] Re: [gutsy] gnome login in to a black screen

2007-10-24 Thread Georges
I don't think this is a compiz issue. I installed from scratch 7.10 and
everything works. Also a test account was all fine. X, compiz, keyboard,
all fine.

Then I took the harddisk with the /home from another 7.04 install and
tried to login to those users (after updating /etc/passwd of course). I
first get a popup about the X keyboard not being the gnome keyboard. I
clicked "use X keyboard" and then I stay on blank brown screen with the
mouse pointer.

On the disk trackerd is indexing all my pictures.

[Bug 141265] Re: [gutsy] gnome login in to a blank screen

2007-10-24 Thread Georges
what I did to make it work:

move the home dir somewhere else and create a completely empty one with
the same user and mode

then login. it works.
logout again.

move everything except dot files to the working homedir.
also move those dotfiles you know have nothing to do with gnome, like .mozilla
etc...
This means you will have to reconfigure all your nice panels.

login still works.
you can now do try and error: move other files, login again.
But I would not try the .gnome* and similar. I did not do those trials so I
don't know in the end which files contained the problem.

[Bug 164222] no sound in ayttm 0.5.0+10-2ubuntu1

error is:

I could not find anything usable using strace. The sound file is readable by

can someone explain me this:

esd --help
[...]
Possible devices are: hw:0 (HDA Intel)
   hw:1 (USB Device 0x471:0x308)

I have no idea what the USB is, but I want to use the HDA. Ok I try this:
esd -d hw:0

I hear the bleeps of esd startup.

If I do this:
esd

I hear nothing. An strace shows that esd is hanging on a semop()

Maybe ayttm gets it's sound device wrong the same way esd does?

[Bug 56090] Re: Regression: Webcams using pwc driver produce all-grey images

2007-02-25 Thread Georges
I just found out about this, wanting to urgently use my webcam. G.
In camorama, the "small" size works (i.e. a picture, not grey).
After applying the above script (thanks a lot!) I found that the script is
dependent on the kernel version for the cp part.
I suggest this:

apt-get install module-assistant dh-make
m-a prepare
m-a a-i pwc
newpwc=$(dpkg -L $(dpkg -l|awk '/pwc-modules/ {print $2}')|grep pwc.ko)
cp "$newpwc" "$(dirname $(dirname $(dirname $newpwc)))/media/video/pwc/pwc.ko"
rmmod pwc
modprobe pwc

Works!

too bad for the 7GB disk space thrown away for the kernel source just to
compile the tiny driver.

[Bug 76876] Re: /dev/dsp busy, but no program using it

2007-03-18 Thread Georges
it is flash related and has been also on all previous versions of linux,
indifferent of distribution.
It may work better with the latest flash plugin (version 9) but I still suspect
the java plugin to also mess around with sound in the same way.

But the real bug is: how do we find out which program is responsible of
blocking /dev/dsp. For the moment I just do a random kill here and there
until I get my sound back.

[Bug 64926] Re: Changing resolution via Ctrl Alt +/- does not work

2007-02-10 Thread Georges
I am alos hanging on this problem

interesting is that I can use xbindkeys to bind "xvidtune -next" to about any
keyboard combination except for Control+Alt+KP_Add
So the functionality is halfway there and halfway gone.

I'm using now the binding Control+Alt+plus and Control+Alt+minus which
are the + and - keys on the normal keyboard.

Here is my xbindkeys:

#next rez
"/usr/bin/xvidtune -next"
   Control+Alt + plus

#prev rez
"/usr/bin/xvidtune -prev"
   Control+Alt + minus

[Bug 71905] Re: Crashed after entering master password

2007-02-11 Thread Georges

today mine crashed while entering password:

double click, thunderbird opens
I click in another xterm (thunderbird looses focus)
I start to type there
comes thunderbird's password prompt (it takes focus)
the password field gets one charactar of what I was typing, then thunderbird
locks up.

I'm reluctant to put the crashdump up here because I don't know what's
in there.

well so my update finished like this after the install -f:

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get remove librep9
sudo apt-get install -f

now that was funny :-(

Good point: it's still working after the reboot!

[Bug 1292407] Re: [lubuntu trusty] Libreoffice shows a fatal error message when trying to open every component

2018-02-26 Thread Georges
I have this same bug on 17.10, more details here
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2385813&p=13743523#post13743523

I could reproduce the bug with a user to make libreoffice fail and make
libreoffice start normally.
Problem is related to me having my homedire not under /home/user but under
another mountpoint /data/home/user

The bug persists even if /etc/password contains /data/home/user
If /etc/passwd contains /home/user which is a symlink to /data/home/user,
libreoffice won't start.

If I move the homdirectory completely to /home/user, the libreoffice
starts without problems.

This was tested with a newly created user.

Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu 17.10
Release:17.10
Codename: artful

libreoffice is already the newest version (1:5.4.5-0ubuntu0.17.10.1).

[Bug 946696] [NEW] ICE pakcer different from SNDH format

2012-03-04 Thread Georges
Public bug reported:

the audio format for "SNDH Atari ST music" is checked by the string "ICE!"
But ICE is a file packer on the AtariST platform which can pack any data.

If you unpack the ICE format, you get the real SNDH file which can be
identified with
12 stringSNDH uncompressed atari SNDH music file

If you want to keep the ICE! definition to say it's SNDH that's fine,
but please add SNDH uncompressed as I showed above.

One sugestions would be to add this, which works in 62% of cases for compressed
SNDH:
0 string ICE! atari ICE packed data
>14 search/40 NDH SNDH music file
>14 search/40 TITLSNDH music file

The second search is needed because ICE sometimes packes the NDH string
too well, but it still shows the TITL tag :-)

The rest 28% of files I found are very probably not in a proper SNDH
format. They are just compatible with the player but lack a proper
header. Others are packed *twice* with the ICE packer. For this I will
make a bug report to the maintainer of the SNDH files archive.

[Bug 946696] Re: ICE pakcer different from SNDH format

2012-03-06 Thread Georges
The new SNDH archive is fixed and I adapted the pattern match

12 string SNDH atari SNDH music file
0 string ICE! atari ICE packed
>14 regex .{0,60}([SNDH]{3,3}|[TIL]{3,3}) SNDH music file
>12 string ICE! ICE archive

This only misses 3 files of 3382
The other 3 can be found with
14 search RIPP
But that makes double matches with the other pattern.

[Bug 1251178] Re: qdbus and qdbusviewer crash with "No such file or directory"

2021-09-12 Thread Georges
It's 2021, and this issue still exists.
In my case with qdbus command, installing and re-installing qt5-default does
not help.
The solution of @yatsek worked:

qdbus: could not find a Qt installation of ''

$ sudo apt-get install apt-file

$ sudo apt-file update

$ apt-file search /usr/lib/qt5/bin/qdbus
qdbus-qt5: /usr/lib/qt5/bin/qdbus
qtbase5-dev-tools: /usr/lib/qt5/bin/qdbuscpp2xml
qtbase5-dev-tools: /usr/lib/qt5/bin/qdbusxml2cpp
qttools5-dev-tools: /usr/lib/qt5/bin/qdbusviewer

$ sudo apt-get install qdbus-qt5

Voila!

[Bug 304574] [NEW] package nagios2-common 2.11-1ubuntu1.3 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2008-12-02 Thread Georges Jamieson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nagios2

I can't tell if it's a new bug. I have spent a lot of time going through
the various bugs. I upgraded to 8.04, used synaptic to install nagios.
It failed to configure and start. Once I started to investigate I found
a "working" Nagios 1.4 (my apache server could display the page). I
tried to uninstall nagios and had to do all sorts of things listed in
the various bugs as well as manually remove some directories.

After an apt-get purge (after touching( per several recomendations in
the bug reports) the apache2 nagios.conf which was deleted) I
reinstalled using apt-get.

The system generated a report and suggested I send it in which is what I
am doing in the hopes it may be helpful. Use the information if it's
helpful.

[Bug 314600] Re: fglrx versions newer than 8.543 cause system hang and panic

2009-06-04 Thread Georges Jamieson
So if I understand correctly, many ATI chipsets will no longer be
supported by the fglrx driver under Ununtu and some other distributions
of Linux. No atempt will be made by AMD to maintain support for even
relatively recent chipsets and using the fglrx driver is really just
gambling. This means Ubnuntu users need to switch to NVIDIA cards. I
have been strugling with this bug/problem for several weeks and am ready
to give up. Am I understanding this correctly?

[Bug 314600] Re: fglrx versions newer than 8.543 cause system hang and panic

2009-06-13 Thread Georges Jamieson
Mathais,

I do not mean in any way to disparage anyone's efforts in writing
drivers for graphics cards. My comment was simply an attempt to
summarize the situation with respect to getting a graphics card to work
under X based on what I read in the bug reports. I upgraded from an ATI
9600 to an ATI 2400 HD and from a one Viewsonic monitor to a newer
Viewsonic monitor. I finally got the vesa driver to work yesterday but
still have no 3D acceleration.

I started with Linux (Slackware) around 1993. Getting X to work has
always been a pain. In spite of much progress in auto detecting cards,
monitors etc, I seem to always have a combination of hardware and
software that requires hours of effort to make X work and it has
recently been getting worse instead of better. I have an ASUS
motherboard a Viewsonic monitor and ATI graphics cards, hardly no name
manufacturers. Lately, none of the live Linux distributions I've tried
work on any of my computers (two desktops, Acer and Compaq laptops and
an Apple Macbook Pro running Parallels). In each case the issue is X.

[Bug 260001] Re: ubiquity crashed with InstallStepError in configure_bootloader()

2009-01-08 Thread Georges Jamieson
I fixed the problem by running grub-install. For some reason the disk
order was different than in previous versions of the installer. Grub
tried to install to hd0. It should have been the third scsi drive but I
didn't know if there was a chroot involved so it took a while to figure
out how to correct it. When I tried to change to hd2 it still failed.
Only when I manually did a grub-install to /dev/sdc did it work
correctly. This disk /dev/sdc with root on /dev/sdc1 becomes /dev/sda
when I boot normally. Nothing has changed on my system since at least
three versions ago of Ubuntu and perhaps more. This is the first time
that writing to the MBR has been a problem. I was a bit rusty on GRUB
since it's been a while since I had any problems.

The error that GRUB could not write to the MBR and /boot was due to
trying to write to an external USB drive. Since this failure is at the
last step would it make sense for the installer to check that it can
write to the MBR (or wherever) before spending several hours installing
only to fail at the end? The system was installed on the correct drive,
only the GRUB stuff was misdirected.

Re: [Bug 304574] Re: package nagios2-common 2.11-1ubuntu1.3 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2009-01-20 Thread Georges Jamieson
Andreas,

I have had intermittent problems with file system corruption for the
past 4 or 5 years. This has happened with SuSE, Debian and earlier
versions of Ubuntu. The problem goes away and I thought it was gone for
good this time but it reappeared with the previous version of Ubuntu. I
am now on 8.10. and no problems so far. I think, in hindsight, that the
Nagios problem was related to this creeping root file system corruption.
It became so bad I could not recover and had to do a new install (and
upgrade to 8.10).

I did a complete uninstall of Nagios (on Hardy Heron) and a fresh
install and it worked fine. I had to manually remove some files as I
had tried uninstall and re-install several times. At this time I think
it is best to close this bug as unrelated to Nagios.

The symptoms I have appear as if my hard drive were failing but the
drives always test good and I've had multiple drives over the years. I
have an all SCSI system. I tried to identify the problem but have been
unable to. If you have ever heard of a similar problem of creeping
corruption eventually requiring an fsck on nearly every reboot, I'd
appreciate any guidance you could give.

Thanks,
Georges Jamieson

I agree. I need to install Nagios on my updated system. The upgrade
eliminated it (I did a fresh install with preservation of my home
directory only). I'll pay close attention to the install and if I see
any repeat of the problem, I'll file a new bug report with plenty of
detail this time.

[Bug 228942] Re: Unable to remove folders which contains tab characters on a ftp server

2009-02-16 Thread Georges Seguin
Yes, the bug is still present with Ubuntu 8.10 and Nautilus 2.24.1 /
gvfs 1.0.2-0ubuntu2, and it's easy to reproduce. If you have a ssh
access to a server with a ftpd (Debian's proftpd 1.3.1-17 in my case),
you can try these commands :

mkdir " test1" <= with a space at the beginning
mkdir -p "test2/.directory with a dot" <= with a dot at the beginning

Now, connect you to the ftpd with nautilus and try to delete these two
directories. You will obtain errors in both cases, while that worked
well with gnome-vfs.

New Qt 4.5 comes with lconvert, which can convert translation files from
ts to po and vice versa (also handles xlf). This enable to convert Qt
translations and upload them to Launchpad. Still, that's nothing but a
workaround.

2008-04-21 Thread Georges Seguin

Nautilus checks for VIDEO_TS, AUDIO_TS, SVCD, VCD, BDAV... directories
while connected on a FTP server.
